This is beyond unnecessary. For any normal user, opening the case every 3-6 months and using a vacuum on the fan and the slots will eliminate all dust and debris build up. Asking people to start removing fans and other components will only lead to many more people with broken or damaged PS5’s. Also the “guide” for taking off the panels is about as detailed as gameboy graphics.

Dude. You have no idea the sht thats inside ps5. The radiators are so stupidly engineered. Vacuuming doesnt help a thing. Dust bunnies are roaming around between the radiators (suprise-suprise, there are more than one radiator). Even removing the fan doesnt help, because most of the dust is where you cant reach until you take the whole system apart. Worst part is that the power supply has tiiiiiny holes for cooling which get clogged with dust. Enjoy the repeated shutdown due to power supply/unit overheating.

I've been opening up my day 1 launch model and cleaning the dust by removing the fan blades, as well as cleaning the heatsink partially, about every 4-5 months ever since 2020. Make this a routined maintenance practice, and you should almost never have issues with the console overheating, as long as there's plenty of ventilation in your setup for the exhaust vents to escape heat of course.

Awesome vid, I've been cleaning electronics for years and compressed air in a can has gotten super expensive from when I first discovered them. The cans are convenient but don't last very long. The best investment I made was getting a $50 air blower for electronics. You can go at all your electronics at the same time and you're buying the compressor, not the air. In a year or so you'll have saved money and your keyboard, PC, and consoles will be relatively clean

Had mine since launch in the UK. Last year it started powering off. Took the fan out, cleaned it, blow dust from the heatsink that I could. It would be ok for a month and then start shutting off again. Got fed up of it this year so figured it was out of warrenty now so let's get the thing pulled apart. Stripped it down to the last bolt and as I took out the heatsink and exposed the power pack, it looked like someone had moved in and layed a carpet over the power pack vents. Cleaned it off and my ps5 is running cool and quiet again. There are some very good tutorials that demonstrate step by step to guide you. Get right down to the power pack if you can and clear out all the holes. Made a massive difference.

Get a good computer vacuum. Don't use compressed air in a closed room (outside is best). But if you blow from the top, and blow from the bottom.... you actually blow the dust back inside the PS5. Do not "wiggle" get pinch-nose pliers and pull carefully up on the plug, never pull on the wires. Get a makeup brush to clean the fins, it is softer and has longer hairs. Compressed air is... compressed, which means that if you spray too long, the air might get "frozen" and now you are spraying water inside the unit.

The inside of the plates were pretty gross, though - with gray dust patterns. That was hard to get off, and I wasn't able to get it perfect. I used rubbing alcohol at first, but didn't do a great job. Then I used Dawn's Power Wash spray that did better. I was afraid to use too much force when taking the plates off, but you really need to apply some. One note - I used a T8 to unscrew the fan. In the video, you said that a T9 worked for you, but it was too big for me. T8 was perfect. Thanks again!

Many people tried to replace or just remove the fan and they ripped the whole fan connector off with its traces. At that point need a micro-soldering expert to repair your motherboard. Be very careful disconnecting the fan if the connector is stuck to hard leave it alone. Yank too hard and you effectively bricked your motherboard.

@@plasmaoctopus1728 I'm guessing that's the main reason for it besides maybe a cost saving measure/form of planned obsolescence But at that point it's clear that Microsoft asked the design team to make the series console the most optimal shape for airflow while Sony had a bit more of an emphasis on sleek futuristic design at the detriment of airflow Edit: also the way the X is designed having its intake be on the bottom (when upright) I feel is probably a reason you see a lot less dust accumulated than PS5 having it at the front when on the side and almost at the top when standing. I'd like to point out though, never use a compress air into your ps5 console or any devices especially if you are not going to totally open up the system. Blowing air into your PS5 will only push dust, hair or any particle inside thus clogging the system further especially the power supply. I recommend using a mini vacuum* or a handheld vacuum to suck out those dust. Remember there are dust catcher in your ps5 with holes where you can put the vacuum to suck those dust/particles out.

My setup: -I have three AC Infinity 120mm usb powered fans on the wall shelf I keep my consoles on that all blow in the same direction to maximize airflow. -My PS5 has windowed panels with removable dust screens. -My Steam Deck dock sits on top of a DIY laptop cooling pad using two of the above mentioned AC Infinity fans. -When either aren't powered on, they have dust covers over them. These things aren't cheap. So take precautions.

Is it better to have the PS5 horizontal or vertical for airflow and cooling? Or, does it not really matter?
@AbsenceOfLogic
@AbsenceOfLogic 9 месяцев назад
It shouldn't matter much if the fan is working properly. If you're wondering about natural convection, that isn't something that is worth being concerned about because there's a cooling fan in the PS5. TL;DR: How much space is around it is more important for cooling than whether it's horizontal or vertical. The only time natural convection is a significant concern is when there's no fan and the electronics are being passively cooled. As long as the fan is working and forcing fresh air flow over the heatsink, any orientation will be fine. What's more important is making sure there's nothing too close to the PS5 to restrict airflow around it. Like don't put it inside an enclosed space where fresh cool air can't get to it and replace the hot air exhausting from it. Don't surround it with other electronics sitting right up against it with no space in between them. It's best practice to leave a minimum of about an inch or two of space around any electronics that tend to get hot so any hot air that comes out of it doesn't build up around it over time. You also want to avoid blocking the back exhaust so the hot air can escape easily. Like don't put the PS5 back exhaust area right up against a wall for example. Especially if you play graphically demanding games for more than 4-5 hours at a time. If it's convenient, you could even help it a little by pointing another fan at it to help cool air get to it faster. If your room is well air conditioned that should be enough though. As long as you're comfortable in the room temperature, the air will be cool enough for the PS5 to operate well for a long time. You just need to allow air to flow easily around it.
@Zzues
@Zzues 9 месяцев назад
@@AbsenceOfLogic Thank you for the feedback. I have plenty of room around the PS5 now, so should be getting plenty of airflow.

Just followed johns guide to clean console, hopefully that fixes the issue until the next clean. Edit: Also, because i now know how to clean it, I’ll probably put it back in its vertical position.

Honestly I've opened, fixed and cleaned plenty of consoles just by watching YT instructions (OG xbox, XOX, PS1 FAT &SLIM, PS2 FAT and slim, PS4 Fat and Pro) and the biggest problem I've met was broken warranty stickers, some shops and people don't like them Off, even on the 20 year old systems, so letting gamers clean their consoles without voiding the warranty was a huge step ahead as more and more people are brave/skilled enough to open their hardware to do the cleaning themselves

You DO NOT need to unplug your fan to clean the casing or the fan. It usually doesn't come up really easy and can rip the connectors from the Motherboard living you with NO FAN. Please be careful with it if you choose to remove it, it usually doesn't come up with your hand.

One of my favorite things about the PS5's design is that you can remove the fan without voiding the warranty! Even if I don't care about the warranty, I always hate ripping the stickers. Even my Playstation 2 and 3 that could use some repairs are left untouched because I don't want to damage the warranty stickers. Sony did a great job with this one!
