Every Small Workshop Needs This

John Heisz - I Build It

I thought it would be handy to have a small table for my cordless trim router.
Key design points:
- made entirely from scrap wood, plywood mostly
- fast and easy to put the router in and take it out again
- a convenient way to clamp it down to my work bench
- a proper fence with movable faces to close the gap around the bit
- use a base plate for the router that can stay on the router
Time will tell how often I use this table. Making it more convenient to use for small things than my big router table will go a long way.

The only thing I would have done differently is to make the new router base the same shape just a little oversized then you don't have to change the plate when you want to use it for something else 😀 otherwise I love it!

This is honestly a perfect beginner build. A router table is one of those things I have always wanted to own but have neither the space nor the money for a full sized one. This solves both of those problems while allowing just enough room for my own problem solving to make it fit my router. Genius!

@osvaldocristo

Engineer router table. Actually my router table has very similar design, but (probably) 75% bigger. It fits both my small Makita as well bigger Bosch routers. It was made from scraps in a single afternoon and paid the effort several times. For dust extraction when using it extensively, I use a vacuum and the stuff each router came for dust collection. Thanks for post that because am not feeling alone as most people, at last in YT, have super fancy router tables!

Very nice John. I can attest to how handy it is to have a router table this size for a compact router. I built one that hangs off the side of my MFT/3 for a cordless compact router. It's great for those small, quick jobs or when you have your router table set up for an operation and you don't want to break it down. And an added bonus of John's design is it's easy to take on the road when working away from the shop.

Perfect timing, John. Lately I've been frustrated with my Makita cordless trim router, which is tough to use for so many operations. I was lusting after a router table, but geeez those things are expensive, and frankly I don't have space to set them up permanently, nor need for all their features, nor the patience to deal with their complexity. Maybe someday. But in the mean time, you've shown me a simple, quick way to *greatly* increase the utility of my cordless Makita. Thank you sir!

I incorporated my router into the extension gap on a Ridgid table saw. Used a 1/2" shank router. Worked out fine, and it's as stable as the table saw, with no extra room used in the shop. Food for thought, keep up the great videos.

I did that on my rigid jobsite saw, the gap when using the bed extension makes a nice place for a router table, I just have the cheap ryobi router table top and fence with a rockler router lift

Funny enough I just made this as well for the same router this week. My version has a larger fence and top but clamps to my workbench with the router hanging over the edge. The Makita dust collection attachment also works well enough that I haven't needed to attach dust collection to the fence. Will probably be using this as my main router "table" for a long time to come

i just fit mine to my underside of my. bench. removed the shoe first. marked holes amd then ran 2 5mm.threaded bolts. from the top of the bench (counter sunk). i then used a piece of roofing batten as a. fence. set it for 5mm picture frame. rebates and drew a line on the bench with a marker.. i adjust the batton distance accordingly by screwing it down. im thinking of using wing nuts in the near future for quicker adjustment

Since moving into a place and working out of a small garage now, I've been downsizing all my tools. I've been thinking about a cordless router and a small table like this for a while. I dont know much about these trim routers. U would assume they work fine without 1/4" bits amd be more than enough for my infrequent needs. Thanks John

🔥 Or you could just save yourself the time & effort by purchasing the Veritas version long available from Lee Valley Woodworking. A bit more polished. In addition to the table, they also make base plates (use with or without the table) for almost all compact trim routers, including the current Ridgid versions.

Great video. If one wanted to expand on it a little, then one could add T tracks for the fence or a mitre gauge, but of course that increases the cost. It might also make life easier, picking up a second base, so that the only thing you are removing is the router body when needing it for another job.

I made pretty much exactly the same thing for my Katsu cordless router (basically a Makita knock-off, it even takes their batteries!), I just bought an extra base for about £12 and installed it permanently rather than making it removeable. It even has the fine adjustment with the knob!

My original idea was to make the table so that just the body of the router was needed, without the base. I did it this way to simplify the build.

I've been using similar things for building router tabes. This is a good project, but I think plexiglass is not a good material for this. Aluminum is a better choice, you can drill it with simple electric tools and cheap bits. In addition, it does not crack or fail like plexiglass. And, if you have a good supplier, try getting some very large aluminum plates for the router table. Therefore, you can get a more precise ground for larger workpieces. And, if you build a router table, let it be large; because that damn thing is awesome, and you will definitely want to add extra pieces (like an adjustable fence) to it.
