Luke's plan in ROTJ was not to kill everyone. He gave Jabba plenty of opportunities to just give him what he wanted and if Jabba did not do it, he would kill him. He wants to go in and just get Han and get out but he does not go in guns blazing because that is not the Jedi way.

What has always amazed me about Star Wars is that for a film series that was made out of order, it's amazing to see how a passing reference to something like "The Clone Wars" or "The Emperor" can come back years later and become such a huge part of the story. Like, audiences in 1977 had NO IDEA what "The Clone Wars" was, and now 40 years later it has a whole 7 seasons of television documenting it. Or even how that one random guy in the white uniform in the background of the conference room scene would be a prominent character in that show.

Sometimes I wonder if people know that stand-in actors (or objects) are a thing. Do some people think that green balls on a stick was the initial plan instead of dragons? There's quite a lot of misconceptions about how the OT came to be, like the myth that the editors "saved" A New Hope. Cheers from France! 🍻

In the book titled “The Princess, The Scoundrel, and The Farmboy” which is a retelling of “A New Hope” split up into three parts and each part is written from different viewpoints the first part of the book is is told from Leia’s point of view and we as readers “see” what she is going through as the Empire questions her about the Rebellion. In the second part of the book we see the story from Han Solo’s point of view and it’s in this section of the book we get an additional scene on the Millennium Falcon where we “see” Obi-Wan hand wave R2-D2 over to him and he says, and I quote, “It’s good to fly with you again old friend,” and that proves that he does remember R2 from all those years ago.

Talking about the special editions, i'm honestly surprised the ever iconic Stormtrooper bumping his head on the door blooper wasn't mentioned. The fact it was so funny behind the scenes that they kept it in and then later on added an actual **bonk** SFX to go with it is hysterical. 😆 Rest in peace to Micheal Leader who played the clumsy trooper... you went down in Star Wars history good sir.

Correction: Vader dosent learn about luke in the emperor scene. Palpatine is learning about it now (hence why the special edition changed the line, so that’s more obvious), but Vader has always known and is hiding that he knew. He’s been hunting for the son of Skywalker the entire movie: in his first scene in the film when he identifies the rebel base he says “I’m sure Skywalker is with them”. Vader always knew he was looking for his son the entire film

One thing to note on in terms of the transition of the look of the visual effects of A New Hope and Empire Strikes back: When A New Hope was being made, the newly founded Industrial Light and Magic was a fledgling company at the time. When Principle Photography had ended in London, George found that ILM had only *four* shots completed, with only *six* months left to finish the effects, as for the majority of the time, ILM was developing the motion-control systems that would be used to film the miniatures with. ILM did prevail and get them done in time, however, and of course, the film won the Oscar for best visual effects that year. What is incredible is that in the span of *two* years, ILM went from a fledgling company to a company who could hold their own and create fantastic visuals, even pioneering certain aspects of visual effects, such as the use of motion-control cameras with stop-motion animation (something Aardman and Laika use in their films to do moving shots with stop-motion animated characters in them) A New Hope may have introduced ILM to the world at large, but I truly think that Empire Strikes Back was really the one that put them on the map as one of the best visual effects companies in the history of film.
@rampagingelephant7353
@rampagingelephant7353 9 месяцев назад
One thing I appreciate about the Original Trilogy are the use of miniatures, physical sets, and practical make-up and special effects. The over-worldly spaceships, locations, and alien races feel more tangible and ground the story. Obviously they couldn't use CGI back in the 70s and 80s when these movies were first made, but it's nice to see these films that pioneered these revolutionary special effects and production design choices still relevant in our pop culture at a time when it seems like almost every live action blockbuster is an animated movie with how much they overuse CGI. Modern Star Wars still films on practical sets and use makeup for the aliens the inhabit the galaxy, but Disney also loves to flex how "good" their CGI and other technological advancements are and it makes everything feel like a tech demo. Nothing looks or feels real and I'm not as immersed in the world and story being presented to me.
@AshtonGarland
@AshtonGarland Месяц назад
I’ll always take practical effects over cgi, even the crappiest practical effects look better than the crappiest cgi. The fact that the actors can really truly immerse themselves with the practical sets and creatures gives it that extra touch of reality.

Something I've noticed throughout this trilogy is the colour of Luke's outfit changing colour. By Return of the Jedi it's all black hinting he may have turned to the dark side. But then in a later scene the outfit reveals white underneath. I wonder how many people noticed that.

Personally, the Force ghost change is my favourite SE change. The ghost of Anakin was always meant to represent what a pre-corrupted version of Anakin looked like before he ended up in the suit. Before the prequels, Shaw filled in that role as we had no idea what a younger, pre-suit version of Anakin looked like. But then Christensen filled that role, so making him the new Force ghost just added for more narrative consistency.
@GothRailfan

Yea, Anakin being young as a Force ghost makes sense as him being young was the last time he was fully able-bodied before burning on Mustafar.

And honestly the episode of Ahsoka with Anakin makes this so much more cool Not to mention, Anakin is quite literally a child of the force, and in my opinion is now embodying the role of The Father. The literal "living" embodiment of the balance of the force. He quite literally is the cosmic Force

@elijahfordsidioticvarietys8770
@elijahfordsidioticvarietys8770 5 месяцев назад
No it doesn’t. The idea of him being a Force Ghost in the first place was supposed to represent the fact that he was decorrupted and turned to the light side again. That isn’t sold as well if you don’t get to see the older Anakin as a Jedi, chilling in Force Heaven. The younger Anakin almost implies that the “real Anakin” died on Mustafar, and that the guy Luke talked to wasn’t him. I also don’t really buy why Luke is so happy seeing him. Instead of seeing his father who he actually met and had a heart to heart to in the last moments of his life, he’s seeing… a guy he saw a photo of I guess. This is like if you saw the ghost of your grandpa, and he looked like he did in the 1950s, some dude you never met and barely recognize. It’s stupid. Not to mention that Hayden’s Force Ghost looks creepy as fuck. This change ruins the whole ending for me. Fills me with enough rage to turn me to the Dark Side.
@AshtonGarland
@AshtonGarland Месяц назад
Eh I’m iffy on it, I really liked that Luke was able to see his father in a similar form as when he took off his helmet. It felt right seeing him as an old man, young Anakin never truly seemed good. He murdered so many people, older Anakin really felt like he had changed and was able to see the damage he caused, and how much he was used. I much prefer seeing the original actors force ghost.

One of the best cases storytelling in A New Hope is Luke's T-16 Skyhopper. It's in the background when he is playing with a model version of it then during the briefing on the attack on the Death Star Luke says he used to bullseye womprats in the that ship. So small, but so crucial. Details like this are absent in the Sequel Trilogy.

There is one big comparison between Luke and Avatar the Last Airbender's Aang. In Empire Strikes Back we see Luke abandon his training on Dagoba to help his friends, and he ends up losing his hand. In Book 2 of Avatar the Last Airbender Aang abandoned his chakra training with the Guru because he wasn't willing to let go of Katara. And he ended up getting killed by Azula's lightning in the season finale. Also, the final fight between Luke and Vader in Return of the Jedi was recreated for the video game turned film adaptation The Force Unleashed, where we as Starkiller face off against Vader on the first Death Star (the appearance of the second Death Star was even used as the basis for the first Death Star being under construction). After we defeat Vader we are given the choice of either killing him or battling the Emperor, which was the same scenario that Luke was in.

I believe until after production started, the plan was for Obi-Wan to not die and travel to Yavin and be the general that briefs the pilots and commands from the ground (Dodonna in the final film) but Marcia Lucas convinced George Lucas that it was more powerful for him to die at the 2nd act turning point because he'd be quite passive in act 3. This might be why the Rebel base comes out of nowhere a bit- Obi-Wan was meant to guide us through it.
@jaylenware363

Lore-wise, I believe the Rebellion was indeed trying to recruit Kenobi. That would make his death a pretty big blow to the Rebellion, even if they're already loosing. Considering he was a general in the Clone Wars, he would have definitely been a threat to the Empire
@commanderdorr2641
@commanderdorr2641 7 месяцев назад
While the idea of obi wan living seems like a good idea, as he stated in this video, George was not sure if there would even BE a sequel. So he took a lot of inspiration from the hero's journey and decided to kill Kenobi, fulfilling the mentor's role as they are not going to be around forever. Yes, Yoda was created to help fulfill the same role only due to the choice made for Star Wars. If you want, Joseph Campbell wrote an amazing book on this matter.

For me, this trilogy is the perfect mixture of a creator's vision and an audience pleaser. As you said, Lucas had a team to keep him in check and reel in ideas that just didn't work. Compare this to the other two trilogies. For the prequels, he had too much control and, while he had an interesting idea on paper, it wasn't presented in the best light. With the sequels, he had little to no say in those films, which shows as the movies either didn't deviate from the story beats of the Original Trilogy or, if they do, it comes at the expense of legacy characters (i.e., Luke and Han) or previously established plot points (i.e., Rey's backstory).

Ok- to provide an explanation as to why Ford’s acting in ROTJ wasn’t as energetic as it was in Empire and New Hope, was because before filming started for ROTJ, he was busy acting for Raiders of the Lost Ark, so after filming wrapped for that movie, he was instantly assigned to ROTJ, so that is why his acting wasn’t as energetic as it was before.

My girlfriend had never seen Star Wars so I showed her the original and prequel trilogies. She was somewhat indifferent to them, but I also got to see them in a whole new light. I grew up when the prequels came out and despite how goofy they are I see the great aspects of it and still like them. My friends my age also love the series and we often have discussions about our thoughts on it. One friend and I had a 2 hour conversation about Star Wars on a long drive recently and just reminisced on this series we grew up with. I’m really looking forward to this video, keep it up 👍🏻.

The dialogue between Luke and Palpatine's "Your over confidence is your weakness", "your faith in your friends is yours" shows that both are right. Palpatine's cockiness thinking everything is according to plan is what made him blind to any threat creeping behind his back, while Luke's worry of his friends at Cloud City which forces him to leave his training is what made him weak during his first confrontation with Vader. But what I find interesting is that Luke proves Palpatine wrong by showing him that being surrounded by his friends is what made Luke strong and Palpatine's assertion of dominance with no one truly there with him is what made him weak.

1:16:20 when Christopher Lee didn't want Count Dooku to plead for his life because it wasn't in character for Dooku, so he just said nothing and looked scarred as hell that he was about to die. (I typed this paragraph before i listened to the rant about the line) Same goes here. The "saying nothing" worked, and got the point across of Vader's conflict. Especially since Vader doesn't normally say his true feelings. (Anakin showed his true feelings alot, but Vader kept them bottled up) The "nooooo" sounds like a kid when they want something to stop, instead of taking a deep breath, not thinking about it, and just doing it, like Vader normally does with everything else.

I think I have an idea of how Anakin learned to be a force ghost, Qui-Gon learned to do it when he was dead and when Anakin died Qui-gon was in the place where good people die and told Anakin how to do it, maybe the other jedi didn't show up because Luke doesn't know them and only the ones he knows came to help and make him happy in the celebration.

I love that Tug watched these films with his fiancee and had so many fond stories to speak of her reactions, I'm really happy for their engagement. A New Hope is the perfect film to me, and while I've never delved into Star Wars before my original and re-edit watches through the trilogy, I can confidently say that this campy, unaltered, tightly written space opera can never be matched in its sublime quality. I'd say it's my favorite, though I still consider Empire the objective best and Jedi a decent conclusion. My ranking would ironically be the chronological order, though they're all around the same mark between 9/10 or 10/10.

What made me appreciate Star Wars more as of recent were its inspiration from other works, mainly Flash Gordon and the other being the Lord of the Rings which is a series I started getting into. Some good examples of their similarities are: 1. Obi-Wan's character being more similar to Gandalf and that he's an old and experienced monk/wizard that has been through a lot, guiding the heroes throughout their adventure, sacrificing themselves for the heroes to progress and then coming back as a more powerful form to continuously guide the heroes: For Gandalf was his white OP form, and for Obi-Wan... a ghost lol. 2. The way the stories forces the heroes in giving them a drive on going on an adventure after their refusal. For Frodo, it was the Ring's evil power and that he's being hunted down, and for Luke is that his ordinary life comes to a close after his aunt and uncle were killed by the Empire. 3. The heroes were given a wound that would never fully heal. For Frodo, it was his stab wound by the Witch King's blade and for Luke, it was his hand amputated by Vader. I feel like without Lord of the Rings, Star Wars wouldn't have even existed and even if it were without LOTR, it would've been drastically different to the ones we have.

Again, congratulations on your engagement. I can understand your 1st problem with a new Hope about Leia having the tracked Falcon take the Death Star to Yavin. I didn’t get it either. Then I watched Carrie Fisher’s audition in which the script she’s given explains why she’s leading the empire to the rebel base. Hiding is pointless, the Death Star will destroy every planet until they get to the rebels and the only hope at the moment is to lead the empire’s weapon to them so they can use the data they have secured to beat the empire immediately. Putting the rebellion on the front line to save the rest of the galaxy from the empire’s wrath based on faith in their abilities is damn bold

Palpatine is, IMO, the greatest villain in all of cinema. The scope of his plan, the effectiveness of his plan, his power, his puppet mastery, and the wonderful portrayal (ESPECIALLY in the prequels) by Ian McDiarmid, for me, comprise a villain that has never been topped on screen.

As a HUGE sw nut this was a great and fair review. I had one or two differences in opinions but all in all I'm glad someone else has such a passion for the original trilogy as I do. Growing up in the nineties, I always looked up to Luke Skywalker and the prequels hadn't even been teased yet, so I thought that being a Jedi was the ultimate goal as a kid. I have nothing but love for them, flaws and all.

The people who get like, irrationally angry, about the Disney era star wars stuff worry me. Great video tug! I have to say-I actually and the shock of finding out Vader was Luke’s father from the film a few years back. I am now 16, but watched the movie for the first time at 8 years old, and had never interacted with the franchise before. I wasn’t previously interested. The reveal absolutely melted my mind. I’ll never forget, my mom let me watch the movie so long as I promised to do my math homework as soon as it was done. I remember clearly I was unable to focus on math, and rushed through it to watch the next movie. I’m pretty sure I failed that assignment. 😅 Somehow I managed to avoid that massive pop culture shock, but I was pretty closed off from mainstream media as a kid, and wasn’t he rally interested in most franchises. But, the plot twist has nothing on the villain plot twist of The Incredibles 2. 😂

I can't wait for your ranking on the prequel trilogy because I want to hear your honest opinion on Revenge of the Sith. It is my favorite Star Wars movie out of all of them because: 1. It is the culmination of Palpatine's Grand Sith Plan and the Galactic Empire. 2. Order 66 is the reason why we see few Jedi in the original trilogy. 3. How Anakin fully embraced the Dark Side of the Force and became Darth Vader. 4. Great lightsaber duels, such as Anakin vs. Obi Wan and Yoda vs. Palpatine. 5. Demonstrates how cunning Palpatine really was. However, I think you should also do a review on both the 2008 Star Wars: the Clone Wars TV series and Star Wars: Rebels because they are both really good TV shows.

Fun Fact about many of the British actors in Star Wars is that many appeared in Doctor Who either before or after the original trilogy, Michael Sheard (Admiral Ozzel) was a regular to Who and would be filming 5th Doctor Peter Davison's first story, "Castrovalva" a year after the release of "Empire", Cy Town was well known as a Dalek Operator, Don Henderson (General Tagge) was alongside Sylvester McCoy and Bonnie Langford in "Delta and the Bannermen", Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett), Garrick Hagon (Biggs Darklighter) and even Vader himself Dave Prowse appeared alongside 3rd Doctor Jon Pertwee in different episodes, Julian Glover (General Veers) appeared alongside 4th Doctor Tom Baker in one of the best loved stories of the tenure "City of Death", but the biggie is Peter Cushing (Governor Tarkin) who played a human version of the Doctor in the 1960's Dalek films. Even in the prequel content you get names like his royal bombasticness Brian Blessed who appeared alongside Colin Baker in the 14 part epic "Trial of a Time Lord", or 10th Doctor David Tennant appearing in "The Clone Wars" series.

12:56 Sorry to be that guy, Chewbacca was never intended to speak English. Ben Burtt said it himself. And that video is just a fun BTS fact, that Peter Mayhew spoke in English just so Harrison Ford and the rest had a better understanding of the tone of the scene, kind of like what they do nowadays with CGI characters, where on set the stunts for said characters have a photo of the face of said character so that the actors know where to look.

Though I've never been a fan of the series, only knowing it through parodies, the lego games, and what my brother told me, I still found this really interesting. I honestly like how simple the first movie is. I kinda wish more modern things were like that. No grand plotlines or twists, just a simple heroic story.

Congratulations on your engagement Tug! Really looking forward to this series, love me some Stars Wars content. Would recommend watching The Clone Wars (even in your own time, not for a video), it adds a lot of great context for the period between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, which has some great arcs and adds a lot to fan favourite characters (Ahsoka and Captain Rex in particular benefit massively from the show). It is a bit of a commitment with there being seven seasons to watch, but it's arguably the peak of Star Wars (at least to me)

Never thought I’d see the day you’d review the Star Wars movies! Been a fan of the franchise for nearly 5 years, and I find myself agreeing most of your analysis on the OT, you’ve brought up some pretty interesting points as well. I really liked to see Alec Guiness getting some recognition as well as everyone else, despite the fact that his views on SW are somewhat controversial, he played Obi-Wan perfectly. And as for Anakin becoming a Force ghost, well, there is a novel from the old canon (the one before the 2014 reboot) which explains that Obi-Wan’s ghost taught Anakin on the fly when the latter was about to die, and surprisingly he did learn it pretty fast and managed to become one just in time, although I do agree that this kinda ruins your idea of not overthinking this scene, lol. Overall, if you actually read this pretty good rant and rankings, sad to see Jedi at the bottom, but your points throughout this video make a lot sense indeed, and props to all of your work, be it Thomas-related or if anything else. Also, I know that you said you’d not want to cover any of the series, but there’s a 2D-animated one about the Clone Wars (not the 3D one from 2008) that is actually pretty short (the full length of the entire series is about the same of one of the movies), but covers the timeframe between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, so if you somehow end up reading this Tug, I’d recommend you to check it out.
