Probably because Strohiem wasn't there to form a friend bond with Joseph, and they weren't even friends, they just had the same interests, which kinda united them but not as friends.
Stroheim was honestly one of the best "bad guys that aren't that evil", like he realizes that the pillarmen are a threat to the entire world and instantly knows to swallow his pride as the "herrenrasse" and accept Joseph's help to defeat them

Man, even before he became a cyborg, Stroheim was busted. My guy leaped up a massive flight of stairs and straight to the door in just a few leaps, endured the pain of having his leg chopped off (along with having to deal with the copius amounts of blood lost by the sudden amputation) and straight up survived a grenade point blank.
Bc he's Whermacht and not Waffen SS. He would have had nothing to do with the political/atrocity side of the faction. Besides, this all happened before the SS secrets were revealed to everyone.

@@Nick-zp8wk ah shit I think you're right!! I've never noticed the totenkopf on his hat. I think I got thrown off bc his uniforms are never black and basically have no regalia related to Waffen SS, except like, the twin lightning bolts I struggled to see when I double-checked. TBH, I kind of figured the animators just threw whatever together to make him a basic uniform, bc they really don't seem to have as much detail as other Nazis in anime.
I genuinely think Stroheim may have awed Joseph more by the crazy stuff he did than anyone else in the entire series. I’d like to think a big reason Joseph was able to hold his nerve in his fights against ancient god-like apex predators was due to the mental buff he got from repeated encounters with this borderline insane German officer-and-later-a-cyborg. Joseph be thinking each time like: “Dunno about the German Science part but this dude willingly having his body f*cked up so much fills me with a certain kind of Zeal!”
As a German myself through and through, von Stroheim is my favourite character. He's representing German soldiers, that did gloryful things, despite still waging war for their fatherland in an act of revenge. Back then, the "good guys" demonized us since the war ended, but today you can watch more and more stories of German soldiers, that not only racked up many kills, but also showed respect to their enemies, because that is, what we were really like. Stroheim is one of the realest takes on Nazi German soldiers there is.

And what is the definition of us in that sentence (what are you reffering to exactly with us)(2)? I'm from the Netherlands and love Deutsch people, the culture and Germany as a country. Germans are like brothers/cousins to us dutchie,(fun fact): the second sentence of our almost 400 year old national anthem (anno 1626) is 'I am of German blood'. We also thus know and learn a lot of German history and culture. I know that ' German' and ' Nazi German' are totally different and apart from each other. Not doing so would demonize the German people so there must always be a distinction between the 2. PS: I know the soldier respect/culture you are reffering to, culturally dominantly influenced by the Preußen cultural warGOATS. PPS: Ich liebe Stroheim, one of my alltime favourite characters.
