When I was in a high school punk band, I went through that trouble. Everytime I told the band i had a song idea, the bassist (who was very progressive rock) asked me what the key was. I was still just a casual guitarist at the time so I had no idea what he meant.

I think doubling the guitar part is mainly for recording. That could be wrong. But it gives the song a huge sound doing that. I like hearing the bass do a double of the guitar but with a few added fills that add contrast. I'm not a bass player by the way. I play guitar so for me doubling the guitar is just natural. It also depends a ton on the genre of music. Trap metal is starting to get a strong foot hold and it definitely does not follow the guitar. Check out ITSOKTOCRY : I seen Satan he has dreads.

The bass following the guitar's root is fine, and definitely has its place,but harmony and counterpoint help make music sound better. Music is more than just melody.

I was saying i like the sound of it doubled up but with added fills also. and also pointed out that a lot of music that i think is really bad ass does not follow the guitars at all. there is a difference in liking the sound of something and thinking it is the only way to do it.

I think for me it's either I know what I'm doing but make a screw up and think that, "oh shit, someone must've noticed (this is usually at performances), it doesn't help that I jump or somehow make it known that "oh shit, I did something wrong." It's a bad habit of mine. The other example is when I actually have no idea what I'm doing but have to do it in short notice or to complete the task, I had to sight read for Chorus All-State just last night and I don't think I got a single note right. Good thing about the latter is, I can at least learn that later for whenever I need to. On another note, I still need to practice my snare work for my senior year of high school.

Do guitar first. With those years of flute playing, your hands will be used to making complex finger combinations, and you will already have a head start over most players. Bass is easy to learn, but quite difficult to get good at. Start with guitar and later if you want you can try the bass you can. Hope this helps
