I think they were friemds. _Georgie_ was the best _Battlefield_ commander in the war. Ike protected as best he could, but _Georgie_ was his own worst enemy. Now biddle Smith. _Georgie_ wanted to lil him, and said so.
they were absolutely not friends, Ike reprimanded him multiple times and eventually dismissed him from occupied Germany for his poor behavior @@nautifella
John Tyler the president's father John Tyler Sr.and Thomas Jefferson were good friends and college roommates. Jefferson was 43 years older than Tyler Jr.
John Adams best friend was his wife, Abigail. They exchanged letters throughout their courting and the long years he spent away. Their letters indicate that he sought her advice and perspective on forging a nation. She urged him repeatedly to support women's sufferage and supported him in seeking abolition of slavery. Omar Bradley was Eisenhower's right hand man, closest advisor during the war and beyond.
Jimmy Carter was close to President Ford post White House. But his real bestie was a Lawyer in Atlanta named Charles Kirbo. He was head of the GA Democratic Party when he was governor. He helped Jimmy win his Georgia Senate seat in the 1960’s. There was a Boss Hog type crook stuffing the ballot boxes in that senate district. Charles challenged the election and Jimmy eventually won. He was in charge of the Carter family businesses in a blind trust during the Carter administration. He was tasked with interviewing the short limit of VP options and recommended Walter Mondale. He could have had his pick of cabinet jobs but could not take the pay cut from leaving the prominent King and Spalding Atlanta law firm. He died years ago. Didn’t enjoy Jimmy’s longevity. They were very good friends.
Yeah, I remember a radio interview with an author that wrote a book about the presidents "best friends". Most of them were childhood or school friends...etc, people they grew up with not just their "work buddies" like this list. Funny thing, when he tried doing research on Rump, there was no one to put in that role, he said the man didn't have any actual friends. LOL
except Jimmy Carter and Ford, and maybe Andrew Jackson and James Polk, Jackson and Polk were even nicknamed old Hickory and young Hickory because of their support of each other, but I agree the rest were more allies
Yes, but after Carter left the White House, he and Ford became close friends and often visited each other's home. They were usually photographed standing or seated next to each other whenever the former presidents got together for events. Rosalynn Carter and Betty Ford also formed a close friendship due to their shared interests (women's rights, mental health issues, drug abuse prevention, etc.).
George Bush senior’s wife Barbara was probably his best friend also I think that would have been the same for Ronald Reagan who absolutely adored his wife.
I am 67. Grew up in a family that was very behind Nixon in 68 and 72. Watergate was wrong however, the efforts to demonize Nixon were not right. Her served in WW2, was a good husband and father and loved this country. A foreign policy genius. He made big mistakes and paid a huge price. But he did good things. He created the EPA. He got our POW’s home to name a few. So glad Julie and Trisha have lived long enough to see their fellow Americans come around and see the good things about their father. He will forever be tarnished by Watergate but he was not all bad. He was himself victimized by political dirty tricks in 1960. Read his book RN and know the fullness of the man. Stop being brainwashed by the he was only a Devil line. Historical interpretation requires time distance and an open mind. Do the work, research the man in full. Thank You President Nixon for the good things you did in office. Teach the children well.
Nixon was a psychologically flawed man. Eisenhower wouldn't even lift a finger for him when he ran in 1960. And political dirty tricks existed before and since 1960 and there is no actual evidence that they played a decisive role in 1960. As for dirty political tricks - they didn't call Nixon "Tricky Dick" for nothing. Nixon also prolonged the Vietnam war by sabotaging peace talks back in 1967 all to benefit his run for the WH. So, it wasn't just Watergate. Lastly, I don't give a rat's patoot if he was faithful to his wife and a good family man. We aren't electing saints or family men - we are electing a President. I'll take a Jefferson, Eisenhower, FDR, JFK or Clinton any day over a Nixon.
You're quite right. I'm 63 and also lived through the Nixon era. With all the years he served in congress followed by eight years as Vice President, he had to be one of the most knowledgeable and capable Presidents in history. His greatest achievement was likely with the Vietnam War winding down, through his knowledge and skill with negotiations in foreign affairs. If it wasn't for Watergate, Nixon would have gone down in history as one of the greatest U.S. Presidents of all time. I believe other U.S. Presidents have gotten away with worse crimes than the Watergate scandal.
@@canadianfortrump4057 First - Nixon prolonged the Vietnam war by sabotaging peace talks while he was running for his first term in 1968 - just in order to improve his chances of winning against Humphrey. look it up. Thousands more died on both sides because of this mind-boggling selfish act. US direct military involvement (the US war) in Vietnam lasted from 1965 to the last prisoners coming home in 1975. Ten years. Nixon was in office for 6 of those years. How can you say Vietnam was a plus for him??? He was vice president under Eisenhower for 8 years - and IKE wouldn't lift a finger to help him when he ran in 1960. Tells you something, no? Crimes far worse than Watergate. Yes, just look at Bush II and Trump. But if you think Watergate was no small affair, then you know NOTHING about Watergate and what Nixon personally got his dirty hands and elbows into.
I would like to know where it was decided Patton was Ike's best friend. Certainly not during his presidency, as Patton died at end of WWII. And for all he was a great general, he exasperated Eisenhower, at times.
Thomas Jefferson: "Hey, Jim. Do you want to hang out at the mall?" James Madison" "Sure. Maybe we can pick up some chicks." James Monroe" "Hey, guys. Wait up for me."
Yes, Read the book Jack and Lem. They became close in prep school. Lem stuck by him when he was very sick as a teenager while his rich parents were off doing fun things with their money. JFK had a strained relationship with Rose.
Absolutely. Billings had his own private room in the Kennedy White House. Joe Kennedy Sr once said that Billings was like a member of the family, like a son to him. Out of this entire list, the three I would say that are most verifiably accurate are JFK-Billings; Lincoln-Snead; and Nixon-Rebozo
Dolley Madison was a hugely popular and extremely influential figure in the DC high society and political circles. She became related to Van Buren through marriage as she was the one who introduced one of her youngest nieces to one of Van Buren's sons. So Van Buren, as a result of this association, came to rely on Dolley for advice, guidance, and support. Dolley also occasionally filled in for his daughter-in-law as a WH hostess as Van Buren was a widower. If you were a president in 1838, you'd want Dolley Madison on your support team, because nothing goes forward without her say so or approval. Remember, Dolley Madison was the one responsible for the expulsion of Peggy Eaton from the hoi polloi, resulting in John Eaton's resignation from the Jackson cabinet.
I have to say that Reagan's best friends were most likely not his former actor colleagues but in fact his wife Nancy (the one that wasn't abusive!) and his Vice President who he literally ate lunch with every Thursday, and called it a private lunch date. Look it up
The creator defines "best friend" a little differently than most, I think. Closest political advisor, perhaps, or coworker, but not necessarily personal best friend.
Actually Thomas Jefferson’s best friend was John Adams. They have the best frenemyship in history. Speaking of which, Disney should have definitely put John Adams in Ben and Me, where it should have reunited Bill Thompson with Hans Conried and considering their roles as Captain Hook and Mr Smee has been one of the best highlights in Peter Pan, they could have done well as Jefferson and Adams (who should have spoken the words of the Declaration of Independence) in Ben and Me and could have done the same as Kings Stefan and Hubert in Sleeping Beauty (if Taylor Holmes turned down the role because of his limited age, considering he was in his 70’s at the time when Conried was 35 when he and Thompson auditioned for the deleted song). That could have made Conried and Thompson have their best chemistry as Jefferson and Adams, along with Stephen Dillane/Paul Giamatti and Ken Howard/William Daniels.
@@TrueStory1827 No--you're right. Ike had to spend most of his time as SAC trying to keep Patton and Bradley from murdering each other AND also dealing with the headache called Montgomery. Being President was probably easy after all that drama!
Truman and Pendergast were not "Best Friends". Pendergast was his political ally and primary financier, but Truman did not like the man on any individual level.
Hold up! You said that Jimmy Carter’s best friend was his wife. If their spouses are an option wouldn’t their spouse be every US president’s best friend??????
What’s the validity on this video? I only ask because Washington isn’t right. You can read his letters to find he was more fond of Generals Greene and Lafeyette.
I really doubt that Tom Pendergast was Truman's best friend. At best, they tolerated each other for the sake of expediency. Makes me wonder about all of the other people on this listing.
They did, in childhood. When they became very involved in politics, they became close to several people who share their views and values, and they came to rely on these people in the same circles.
No way that most of this is accurate. The picture of Trump is not up to the standard of the others. Are you sending a message? If so that stinks and shame on you.
Ford died in 2006. They became close in the years following Carter's time in office. Betty and Mrs Carter were also friendly during the same period. Both Carter's outlived the Ford's. Steve Ford has backed this up.
