Each year in Sardinia, Italy, men from the small village of Mamoiada don grotesque wooden masks and vests of black sheepskin. Stomping and grunting through the streets, they are weighed down by huge cowbells hung from their backs to scare away evil spirits. These hideous beasts are known as Mamuthones and they are part of an ancient tradition that has existed for thousands of years. Little is known about the origins of this pagan ritual, and its legacy continues to be shrouded in secrecy by the villagers. In this film from Andrea Pecora, get a rare look at the Mamuthones as they make their way through the village to usher in the spring.

This is beautiful. I have sardinian origins, but living in Germany, but we visit every year and hope we can travel again soon. Sardinia is the most beautiful place I know, I highly recommend the inside of the isle, the culture is very special and unique and has a lot to offer.

I saw this film years ago, and I come back to it again and again because it is so striking, so full of power and mystery. I would love to go to Sardinia some day and see this ritual in person. If it's this powerful in a film, what must it be like to experience firsthand?

Same here for years, It's captivating and fascinating! Colouring the skin with either clay, ochre or charcoal/ash - making loud noises/to caste away of "x" and dressing up to represent something along with the performance near for example equinox/solstice have been around across the globe, it's cool archaic stuff and interesting to see how much it evolved over the millennium in different ways.

This is kind like a spanish tradition called Zanpantzar, the bells are suppose to scare spirits away and they travel around the north of Spain on this time of the year. It gimme chills when i was a kid and they still creep me out a little

Actually a researcher has just made a book about the conexion of basque lenguage and Sardinian toponymy. Its identical in some cases. As you said this festival is identical too to the basque tradition "zanpanzar". As a basque speaker its amazing to see that our misterios culture could be related to Sardinian first mens

@Talos in Sardinia there is a dialect of Sardinian language, in west coast, and they speak "catalan" ( yes, like barcellona catalan, but more close to balearic catalan). and for second, no, sardinian language is MORE ancient than spanish, because it borned before Latin. Many influence of Spanish grow up the language with new words from Spain ok, but Sardinian is an ancient language. Cheer!

The language is Beautiful! The rhytm and pronounce is rather spanish. All in all mix of spanish and italian. The momuthones are deeply ancient, evil and spooky. Who were they? I think the blacks represent a forceful and negative elements like war, epidemy, draugth and volcano eruption. And the whites are kind forces, that triumf in the end.

No actually is was meant to battle the spirits of snow and ice, and start the spring. Our ancient ancestors (long before Paganism was a thing) would ritualistically track and usher in the Seasons. When the seasons did not meet predictions, it was assumed they must fight the spirits for control of the seasons. This belief system is at minimum 12000 years old. There is a band of time we cannot even begin to rationalize of hundreds of thousands of years prior to this point were it could have actually originated. Mainstream archeologists would rather you just assume all human history started with the Clovis Event, rather than Ended with it, to be reborn as something new. But that is because they were raised with poor educational standards by idiots, and most of them have a degenerative brain disease caused by life long lead exposure. As soon as they all die off a new modern age of awakening can begin.

While halloween also originated from a pagan ritual, I think this one is another, unrelated pagan ritual. Rituals where people put masks and costumes on can be found all around the world, in many different cultures; these rituals do not necessarily have the same origin or the same meaning as halloween.

Zenn Exile So, not sure what you're talking about, "mainstream archeologists" work on non-christian and pre-christian artefacts and digging sites all the time. And I'm not sure where you've found archeologists who would start history in 496(Clovis' conversion), neglecting all Roman and Greek history (among others), unless you're speaking of your christian history teacher in middle school, but I don't think history teachers count as archeologists (and much less as experts). Also, the modern definition of paganism is just a regroupment of religion using heavily spirits in their belief systems, nothing else; nobody would define themselves as just "pagans", like nobody would say their religion is just "monotheist".

Considering there are some dolmens and menhirs in Sardinia, I'd say that's closer to the Celtic tradition of Samhain. We don't have any connection with Germanic history (well, with the Vandals a bit, but they were already Christians when they came)
