With the Main Theme from Zelda Tears of the Kingdom officially here, I wanted to go back through every main Zelda entry and break down the music from every main theme, and even title screen themes. Some games don’t have a true “main theme,” and instead of just doing Hyrule Field Theme for every game, I chose to cover some I consider to be a sort of “main theme.”
This is PART TWO of a three part Series. It includes the following game main and title themes:
Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
Zelda: Majora’s Mask (N64)
Zelda: Wind Waker (GameCube)

I break down some of the thematic elements, chord progressions, melodies, and just genuinely react and have fun with the music.
Part Three will release in the near future and goes chronologically through the next main games: TP, SS, and TOTK.

I really love the Clocktown theme. Even with the day one version, there is the subtle dissonance because everyone can see the moon is falling, but they are all ignoring it, like he said about it, sweeping the tension away like it's not even there.

For me Ocarina of Time's Title Theme is the quintessential Zelda theme. It's not as bombastic or adventurous as the the Main Overworld theme, but it truly feels like a song that sings the tales of _Legends_ - and that's what the series feels like to me.

Lots to say on that, it was the first 3D Zelda, got back to the roots of using music as an integral functional “item” in the game with magic power, and Ocarian of Time took that and went crazy with it. Truly and amazing video game music milestone. And using that original recorder theme from Z1 was a brilliant move. And the gasping of the audience at the 3D Zelda intro was suited perfectly for the music that is just an amazing surpassing peaceful beauty. SOOOOO Good. One of Koji Kondo’s pinnacles of achievement.

As a huge Zelda and music nerd, I absolutely love these videos. I think it’s the music in Zelda that makes it so nostalgic. I really appreciate how you break the music down both technically and atmospherically. I don't know what it is, but WW(HD)'s music illicits the most emotions in me (especially the title theme and the staff theme), even though I primarily grew up with ALttP, OoT and MM (born '91) (WW and TP later obviously, too, but you'd think the first games you grow up with are those who strike a chord (lol) with you the most).

Same. It has this delightful cheeriness that parallels the adventurous narrative and child-like wonder of the plot. It evokes those same feelings now that I experienced when I was a kid playing the game.

Bro i know kingdom hearts isnt nearly as huge as zelda but kingdom hearts 1 was my ocarina of time. I did play like 30 min of ocarina at a family party but was too young to care about it lol. I didnt get into zelda until BOTW but its so crazy how dearly beloved is in the theme. Great analysis!

There was this part in the title theme of Ocarina of Time that sounded like the end credits theme from A Link to the Past. I thought you were going to hit on that but then you went into Kingdom Hearts instead.

Hahaha, I just went back and listened to the whole ending sequence ALTTP to see if I missed anything significant. Didn’t see a tie to OoT opening, but I DID see a tie to OoT Ending. Same two chords as the credits open. Beautiful link between the two. How cool.

Hahahaha, It’s Coming! Director’s Cut will be over an hour long. In fact that was the “reward” for getting to 10k SUBs, as voted on by the channel, and that’s where these smaller cuts came from. Originally I was gonna just do a “brief” and “full” version, but it was like 35 min 🤣 So I was like, let’s do part 1 2 and 3.

YES THIS. THIS PART I wish we heard more of in the other games. I think I remember it comes up again in WW (or at least a 5 note variation of it), when you awaken the Sages of the Earth and Wind Temples/see the Zora and Kokiri that Medli and Makar are descendants of. ❤ sooo beautiful

For those that may not know, the full Zelda's Lullaby is in OoT, but the original Theme comes from LttP :). It plays when you meet Zelda, and when you free the sages :).

Speaking of resemblance to dearly beloved, one of the new motifs in TotK reminds me A LOT of dearly beloved. It's the five note motif that plays during the title card of the first big skydive. It sounds like a four-note part the dearly beloved countermelody.

Hey Chris! You’re one of the ones I always remember and look forward to your comment. I saved it to my “Watch Later” and made sure the link worked but haven’t had time. Right now there’s a few things coming first, who knows if I’ll make an “official” video of it. But I can comment back and let you know what I think once I watch it. Noted! Keeping a list- Kingdom Hearts has 5 votes since I started the list but it had like 3-4 before that. That was going to be one of my next videos but it got pushed back and Final Fantasy made the cut because it has a new game coming out. And yeah, I always want Zelda to be not only the main feature, but the overwhelming majority of videos. At least 1 a week. But other stuff would be fun too. Thanks so much!

OoT was my second game and just hearing that opening brings tears to my eyes. Also at 7:54 there's a little rift that you play, it's a touch higher than it should be but there's no mistaking the melody of Daruk's theme. One other thing, Most if not all Zelda music was synthesized until 2011's Skyward Sword when they first used a full live orchestra

Wow! Same motion and pattern but in Daruk’s it’s a perfect fifth, in Clock Town at the end it’s an octave. Perfect 5th= Star Wars opening 2 notes Octave = Somewhere Over The Rainbow first 2 notes 😊👍🏼

Love this comment! So lots of thoughts- Thanks for watching my first few videos! It was unreliable- I tried doing it every video and half the time I lost the midi. I filmed HOW TO PLAY Zelda’s Lullaby for my Patreon three times. So frustrating. But operating on lower end equipment, I don’t even have a computer, just my iPad. Hoping to upgrade a few things and change DAWs where it could become easier, but not sure. There’s a lot I don’t know. Eventually it will be back!

Man TotK might finally be the game that ties Ocarina of Time as the best game of all time for me, but I don't think it's just nostalgia to say that it is the musical pinnacle of the series. The wealth of original themes and re-arrangements of old ones, the way they all work together, the way the main motifs are all playable on one scale. So good. I'm not usually into remakes, but I would really love it if Nintendo ever decided to do an Ocarina of Time Remake with a fully acoustic score, the way they masterfully did for Links Awakening. The choice of a chamber music style was great for that game, but give me a full orchestra. Heck, you don't even need to remake the graphics, just give me the full soundtrack in an orchestral version.

Hahaha I was playing it one day and was like, Wait??? WHAT??? Now I don’t think they are related, I just think it was a coincidence. But it’s beautiful. Just kind of a bVI bVII with a major 7 and 6 chord. This one is special because I deliberated for like 6 months and didn’t post a video from Sept 2022 to Feb 2023 while I brainstormed, filmed, threw away footage, and figured out what I thought people would actually watch. And I filmed this short like 5-6 times of me “figuring out” that Kingdom Hearts was in OoT Title Theme. Problem- It started too slow for a short, I didn’t have a good camera angle so it didn’t even show the piano, I didn’t think people would recognize the theme unless I played the original for them… just way too many issues, so I ditched it. So it’s always exciting when I come across one of my very first ideas, and now I have a channel where people will ACTUALLY see it and appreciate it 😂 It’s wild.

Incorrect, there is no one single greatest game of all time. There are just way too many good games to justify a single best. Zelda though never fails to impress me on making the Best Games of All Time category time and time again. Ocarina of Time, Breath of the Wild (though personally I can't justify it anymore with TotK out), and Tears of the Kingdom all rank with the top games such as Final Fantasy 7, Persona 5/Royal, and Smash Bros Ultimate

Yeah I couldn’t do every game, just did main console (plug in) games. Skipped Spirit Tracks, Phantom Hourglass, Four Swords, Age of Calamity, etc. Maybe I’ll circle back on those if people really want to see it.
