@@engir63 they did the best they could for the time. Chrysler wasnt in a good way at the time and nor did Mercedes benz help much. It's funny how many automakers such as Toyota are sitting on literal mountains of money, yet they still half ass their sports cars every bit as much these days.... despite joint ventures that take eons to materialise.
WOW! Well done! This Prowler definitely went to the right owner. Before modding it beyond recognition like some RU-vidrs do, you made some very tasteful mods that enhanced what was there. Definitely a dream car of mine. Well done! Can't wait to see more.
I just learned on Jay Leno's Garage that Chip Foose was the designer (perhaps inspiration is a better word) of the Prowler back when he was a student at the Art Center College of Design and before he worked for Boyd Coddington.
yeah, I remember being put off by the Automatic, But given the amount of engineering love that went into it I am truly a fan of them now. Always knew V6s can make a great sonorous sports car engine if not too muffled by turbos. People who say V6's cannot sound sexy think they only exist in minivans, even Hyundais little delta V6's in those old tiburons and ofcourse the Volkswagen VR6s sounded amazing with just an intake and exhaust.
It's a car that still commands a lot of attention on the road, but no one buys them because they came with a V6 which is sad, because the only ones available for me are collectors with 4900 miles on em!
Since the transaxle was just a 42LE put in the back, couldn't you use these gears in, say, a 300M or Concorde? Or any LH platform car for that matter? Lol
I'm pretty sure if he was making eye contact with the Wizard that before he even asked the wizard anything he would have just blurted out "NO!" 🤚😮 LOL!
It’s cool seeing how much more comfortable the Wizard is in front of a camera nowadays. He’s so relaxed now, compared to the “deer in headlights” look he used to have. 😂
Facts. The wizard has really come into his own. We have seen him grow up right before our eyes. In all honesty though this is what RU-vid was supposed to be all about. Just creators putting out cool content.
Most Chrysler vehicles of that period were easy to work on. I've done the absolute quickest timing belt and water pump replacement on a car with this 3.5l engine, that I had to double check I didn't miss anything. It was also the cheapest timing belt job, which included everything that should have been replaced.
The diff trick might work, I do remember they were chain driven, but I never opened one. I never needed to open on, those cars were reliable, with only minor issues.
That Chrysler 3.5L was a great engine. I had a 2002 300M Special with the same engine and transaxle. Absolutely intoxicating exhaust note. Best and most reliable car I’ve ever owned. Chrysler was on fire from the mid/late 90s until Daimler sucked the life out of them.
You are correct and like BMW who sucked the life out of Rover for 4wd Intel, Daimler ( the Chrysler was silent) did the same. I had other people rave to me about Chrysler products I recommended in the 90s to them.
It just seems to go over everyone’s head that the Prowler was made primarily for Chrysler to gain knowledge and experience in producing basically an all aluminum car. Many of those involved were lost to Ford in the crash and went on to develop the aluminum F-150. Also, it gets overlooked that the Prowler basically is an Indy car design and weighed in at roughly 2,800lbs. At the time of production, 250HP in a 2,800lb car was a pretty damn good power to weight ratio.
I always felt the same way about the power/weight ratio with these Prowlers when they were new, and back in the late-90's even Vettes only made about 90 more horsepower than this... But most auto publications called these "underpowered" which was weird to me. I've never driven a Prowler but I did lease an '01 Chrysler 300M brand new right out of college with this same drivetrain in about a 500lb heavier car, and I remember it feeling pretty quick for its time.
Just because he sells it for less than he has into it doesn’t mean he’s not making money. Don’t think tyler is being deceitful. Guy is pretty open about his financial situation
He makes the money off RU-vid, not the cars. Its a dream job,he already has a couple bucks, crazy credit limit and then he gets to buy cars he has always wanted, drive them and make money even off the worse examples. I don't know how long this business model can last, but he still has a day job.
When the Plymouth Prowler came out, they were hard to come by and they sold for thousands over sticker price. A 253 horsepower engine was pretty impressive at the time.
@@KrGsMrNKusinagi0I remember them coming out back in the late 1990s. You didn't see many in the Nashville area, so you could recognize most of the owners. It was mostly well off folks like George Jones. A base car was around $40K -- that was two years of income for many people.
I haven't seen that part of a Prowler in person. For the ECU, generally not as good as having it in the interior. Still, if they provided a path for cool air to get to the intake in that area, it will probably also help keep the ECU cool.
@@kc9scott About the only engine bay ECU placement that didn't make much sense to me was my friend's TJ wrangler- up high on the firewall, just hanging out. Only say that because of what a lot of off roaders get into in their jeeps. Trailblazers have them up on the side of the intake manifold, but I don't think any serious 'froader would be getting one as deep in water as a jeeper.
I remember when this car first hit the market, everyone poo-poo'd the thing. I always thought it was a pretty neat car and when you give the aftermarket 20 years they come out with some pretty cool mods to create HP and torque it makes it even way cooler. Tyler might keep this for awhile?
I still remember exactly where I was the first time I saw one in person. I was on Houston Rd in Florence, Ky in front of wal-mart. Thought it was pretty cool looking ride. Not that it matters at all.
tyler: i sold my previa after seeing how terrible it does in a car crash also tyler: makes a wedge shaped car with no bumpers faster Edit: It's just a joke guys, you dont have to write a novel explaining my inaccuracy. We can all calm down
@@megamachine7818 lmaoo you really think a bumper is gonna save you in a crash? Its just a law to have them they're just protection for very minor accidents
Bumpers are for 5mph and under...if you are lucky. Ever look at some plastic front end trucks? (Like a 2000s Tacoma) The plastic fascia may look slightly like a bumper, but all that comes into play during a crash are small comes at the end of the frame. Maybe you'd prefer the Chevy Malibue's blow molded bumper? Prowler Bumpers are massive improvements vs. so many others.
I have a Prowler that I've done some exterior mods to. For years I've been wanting to do some performance mods because it's so light, you don't need much power for it to be quick
I hired one while on holiday in Florida, what a machine! The best I could do when I got back to the UK was to buy a replica, around 10 of these were made by a company called Fiero. Had a long chat with the owner of the company, replica as meticulously made. My example was one of the best, the show car Fiero made themselves. Only 6 were ever completed and registered for the road. The engine was the trusty Ford V6, as was the rest of the running gear. I had a ball for a few years until we moved. Wish I could afford the real thing!
When I was like 12, I asked some dude who pulled up at my mothers work while I was outside how much it cost and he said “MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD.” Even as a kid I was like what a douche. Happy to know his shit is worth my 2015 Ford Focus now,
Terry Hesticles i think im forgetting the part where I pull up in my clapped out Honda civic and ask him what the retail is and he says “MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD PAL, PLYMOUTH” and I smoke him. Because that’s actually what happened but I thought it would be better to lie and say I was a kid outside my moms work which was a video store.
I wish more manufacturers did that. That seems a heck of a lot easier than re-gearing a transmission to change the acceleration or top end fuel economy of your car. A guy in his garage, or a mechanic with a half-hour, could totally change the character of your car with an easily replaceable and relatively cheap set of sprockets and chains. They're probably less durable than a straight up live rear axle and certainly a limited slip differential but would you rather replace a chain/sprocket set that could act as the circuit breaker, first point of failure or a whole rear diff if that's the point of breakage?
I loved everything about this car when it came out. I was a kid and thought it was just the wildest thing. I would love to own one if good examples weren't so expensive...
Hoovie, remember that if you use the auto-stick function a lot to frequently change the trans fluid. I had an auto-stick Dodge Stratus a long time ago and that's what was recommended to me.
, hoving heroically close to hellacious hijinks in his hip and happenin Hemi-less conveyance--the height of automotive haberdashery. He will be humming heroically as he heads homeward in it, his thoughts free of Hellcat harshness.
the original motor that was suggested for that car was a mid engine HEMI, that is the 2nd drawing of the production car. The car itself, and the design was done by Chip Foose.
Barking 2nd is the most satisfying thing in the world. Mine is down at the moment but thank you for putting a smile on my face hearing that.... Thanks for the videos, cheers!!
Ive had 2 of those first gen Sorentos including my DD today. Good solid trucks. Smooth, lots of room, great value. It's a tank up here in the great white north winters.
@@2Skinny Well sure, you could spend a shitload on making a bespoke conversion, but I'm more so talking along the lines of well established and understood methods of doing it. (like taking a gearbox and the ancillaries from a doner vehicle and putting it in)
Well, if you find another rear transmission vehicle, and someone who can weld to the aluminum subframes on the car, as well as have half shafts and drive shaft (which runs at engine speed) , retrofit the clutch pedal a and install linkages down the length of the car, and all sorts of stuff, sure it’s possible!
It would make more feasible sense to have the transmission rebuilt by a specialist I am sure there is a prowler transmission guy who knows all the tricks to make them better. All the Chevrolet automatics have different tricks you can do to make them shift much faster, and I don't just mean increasing line pressure. I am sure there is a Chrysler transmission guy aswell.
My wife and I went and looked at them when new in 99. We really liked what we saw! The reason for not buying is we live in the country and our driveway is a mile-long gravel road. The engereening in this car is way ahead of it's time. They made it easy to work on!!!
Not a Ford guy but those Flatheads are just gorgeous! With that tune on the Prowler, you can go catless and straight pipe it with 3" stainless from the motor back without the CEL! It will sound uber deeep and really growl.
That’s pretty normal. I mean, if you were really good at your job, but you got payed less because someone not as good as you had to take two hours to do it right when you could do it in a half an hour, would you be happy? I sure wouldn’t be.
My friend’s father bought some of the last prowlers ever produced. He has a collection of over thirty all different colors & all with under 100 miles. He even has one set up for pro street. I believe he still runs the prowler owners association too if my memory is correct.
A 2001 Chrysler Prowler first car in high school when they were new, I thought it was the coolest thing ever but kept having issues with the amplifier in the back shorting every time it rained and got caught out in it. Fun little car, wouldnt mind another one day.
My Grandfather used to work for a Chrysler Plymouth jeep dealership and they used to get a prowler every other year. They would also get a mini replica go kart and have that in the show room as well. My brother and I used to drive the karts in the Memorial Day parade. Good memories from my childhood :)
I really enjoy the Wizard's channel, but I also appreciate the fact that he takes so much time on your channel to talk about what he's doing and why and actually show us things.
I was part of a roadster shoot out for a major magazine years ago. We had Mercedes, Honda S2000, BMW, Audi, Corvette, etc. and a prowler. Everywhere we stopped people went to the prowler. Cool, they had no clue it was the cheapest car in the group.
I've sold cars for 32 years now. I remember when this Turd came out, about the same time the PT Cruiser was released. It is under powered and was made for people 5'11" and below. If you think Im joking just take your 6" but and sit in it. You will be driving with your head sticking above the roof. The huge black post is exactly level where your eyes are. I sold 1 and the customer called 1 year later asking if we wanted to buy it back, the answer was a very fast "NO!"
The average height is 5’11 so…. And this is a sports car (think Miata) not a sports coupe (Mustang). Also it wasn’t underpowered. 7.2 seconds to 60 was fast considering the 91 mustangs v6 with 180hp did it 8.7 seconds. Even the 220hp 4.0l v6 in 2005 was still slower than the prowler. The only car you can directly compare this to was the Panoz Roadster which had only a 300hp v8 (0-60 4.5seconds ) but it was expensive and very spartan…company didn’t have any car V8 that was more powerful (Magnum v8). If they would had used that, it would had been a very unbalanced, front heavy and an under steering mess with no ABS (didn’t become mandated at the time).
Hoovie : Kia Sorento one of the first cars to have side impact airbags (produced since 2002) Volvo 850 revolutionary Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) produced since 1995 : Am I a joke to you This is a joke if anyone actually reads this it was for the memes
Dude tell me about it. And downshifting is such a bitch, it catches so hard and lurches the car. So I've learned to give it some gas while downshifting and also braking when coming to a stop. It gives the dope downshifting sound without getting yanked back.
Gotta be honest Chrysler mostly builds junk, but that Prowler is probably one od the finest cars that ever came out of the brand so radical and still looks amazing with a great community, shows that when a car manufacturer proposes to themselves to be excellent, they can achieve it
I don't care what anyone says about me....the Prowler has and always WILL be...my dream car. I absolutely have loved this car since I was a teen driving around in my 91 Chevy S-10 with an engine that was FAR too much for that truck haha.
The more of these I watch, the more obvious "The Wizard" is the star of the series. Amazing how he has learned to work on so many exotics in the middle of Kansas.
I had a Dodge Intrepid -- I belatedly found out that you have to change the transmission fluid every 15,000 miles!!!! Nuts. I believe the Prowler has that same transmission. Good luck with that.
Totally agree. I love straight 6's. My first car was a 56 Chevrolet 210 2 door post, 235 straight 6. Right now at my house I have 5 vehicles, all straight 6's. Three Jeeps with the 4.0, a Ram 2500 Diesel (Cummins), and a motorhome with a Caterpillar C9. And since I've had 4 more Jeeps, all straight 6's, I kind of like 'em.
That trans was designed for the heavy LH cars. It will hold up in a car half the weight! And no, that is not a Mitsubishi engine. That 3.5L is 100% Chrysler, and bullet proof.
I have to admit the prowler was a surprise because it was one of the more fun cars to drive. What's amazing that people often think it is a front-wheel drive.
I have a 99 300M. The 3.5 HO is a great motor. The torque down low feels like a V8. I lowered my drive ratio by swapping the transaxle chain kit to one from a 2.7L Concord. Very spirited now.
