I loved this episode, yes especially memorable is the closet full of walnuts, door opening, 'Laura' walnut surfing out. I was too young to watch the Dick Van Dyke Show when it first came out. But years later on MeTV and DVD I greatly liked and admired them.

Carl Reiner knew she was destined to play Laura Petrie from the moment she showed up. And women who are as beautiful as she shouldn't be _allowed_ to be so danged funny! It's too much for us reg'lar women to compete with! And dance? With legs like hers, of _course_ she could dance. And am I jealous and catty? You bet your tuchis I am. Hmph.

The Dick Van Dyke show was originally going to star Carl Reiner and it was his concept. Carl stared in the pilot show, and I believe it was called "Man of the House" (1959). The network wanted a different lead actor and subbed in Dyke Van Dyke and used his name for the eventual series title. Carl headed up the Dyke Van Dyke show from behind the scenes. Dick credits him for a lot of the show's success, and he didn't want to do it without him when further seasons were being planned at the end.

According to Goggle, more than 99% of the walnuts grown in the US are grown in California's Central Valley. Given the show was filmed in LA, it makes sense that walnuts were used. The “Walnut Episode” was my all time favorite episode of the Dick Van Dyke Show, partly because I was such a fan of the science fiction genre of literature. And when the show took up the premise of science fiction and combined it with the zaniness of the comedic talents of Van Dyke, Moore, Thomas, Amsterdam, and Rose Marie it was a winning formula. Mary Tyler Moore cascading down the torrent of walnuts out of the closet was pure cinematic magic. It is still burned in my brain after 60 years!❤

I love how this episode was used in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A clip was shown in Scarlet Witch's memories of her past, how her and her family would watch shows just like this (this episode specifically) to try and forget the war going on around them at the time. When we were watching that particular film, my husband (Who knows I'm a huge old show buff) asked me what show that was, since he hadn't seen it before, and was curious if it was a real show. I told him it was The Dick Van Dyke Show, yes that was really Dick Van Dyke when he was younger, and the episode name. He chuckled and he said "Of course you know that..." You should have seen how overly excited I was when we watched the first episode of Wandavision... (which consulted with Dick Van Dyke to get the tone right) Sidenote: The show was produced by Danny Thomas, so it was funny to see how self referencing this show was with making Danny the 'guest star' of that week's show episode that they were supposedly writing in his dream... And that amazing delivery from Danny himself, "What is a Danny Thomas?" had me rolling!

You're high the dollar bought a lot more back then. A big bag in the shell was more like 35 to 50 Cents except around the Holidays. At that time they went up maybe a nickel. My folks kept nuts out for family and guests from October to a bit after New Years. When they were harder to find. We had mixed nuts in the shell and Walnuts. My favorite nut still is the Black Walnut. I gather them from my trees in the Fall before the squirrels and deer eat them all.

Hearing that the walnuts were sold made me think about what Moe Howard said about the pies The Three Stooges used, after they had to be reused. They were just a pie pan filled with shaving cream or whipped cream and after they were used once, if they needed them again for retakes, they would scrape the shaving or whipped cream up from the floor and refill the pie pans. It was economical but then the pies would also have things like glass, nails, sawdust and wood scraps in them. I feel sorry for everyone who bought those walnuts.

So long as the shells were intact, it doesn't matter that they were, uh, "handled" in this show. Any walnut you get out of a bag has been handled who knows how many times before point of purchase.

It was funny, amazed that no one got cut from the pieces of broken ones. (This comes from cracking many walnuts and getting stuck).

Mary Tyler Moore was such a great actor, I always thought her character was much more charming than Dick Van Dyke's character. As far as walnuts being contaminated, all the food we eat grew outdoors, fully exposed to mother nature's antics. No problem for me that the crew got to play with them for a few days 😁
