“This is the guitar I’ve waited my whole life for”- these were the words that came out of my mouth to my wife in the midst of jamming for the first time on my new G&L ASAT Custom Classic Sweetwater exclusive. It is a perfect, seamless instrument.
I have a G&L Sweetwater exclusive and I wish it was the first electric I ever bought because I would have played a LOT more 15 years ago. It's such a solid guitar and at the price range it was perfect for a novice.
@@stevenvandemsky7290 all those people jokes about guitarrist's wives... don't want to see everytime you buy a new guitar, your wife buys a bag that is twice as much expensive:D
I feel like G&L tend to get ignored because they don't have the full on 'Fender' trade mark and sometimes they can look a bit odd in comparison to more traditional designs. It just shows though that Leo, who largely poplularised the electric guitar, was still innovating and was generally far more accepting of new ideas than many of the people around even some 31 years after his death.
The G&L’s are light years beyond fender, the pickups, saddle lock bridge, and one of the best stock Trem’s of all time. But the majority want the logo and to be part of the “lifestyle brand” and plus G&L doesn’t pay anyone to play their guitars, so they don’t have a high profile presence, so people pass them by. And it’s a real shame because they are missing out.
Greg Koch has said many times that the allure of the late '50s Les Pauls was that they sounded like "fat" Teles. The ASAT Special comes at this from the single-coil side of the equation. The jumbo MFD pickups are hotter than trad Tele pickups. They will push the front-end of an amp really nicely, yet they are clean and articulate. One nice thing about the MFD pickups is that they will really cut through a mix.
Exactly! Convinced that the only reason Page ever moved from Teles to LPs is because of the 60s cycle hum that would have killed him in stadium shows, but I’ve never been able to confirm my suspicions.
I've played the original G&Ls back in the day and back then the thought was "if I want a Strat, I'll buy a Strat". That was then. Earlier in the year I traded a Deluxe Nashville Tele for a Comanche Tribute with the tobacco/honey burst burled top. I'd seen them around and was fascinated by the pickup configuration so I said what the hell, I don't use the Tele anyway. I play professionally and carry 2 guitars with me at every gig, sometimes 4 or even 5 times a week. The Comanche comes with me every gig. More often than not my PRS S2 comes with me as well and I find myself playing the Comanche more during the night. If I need to really drive my Helix I use the S2 but more and more I use the Comanche. I've owned all the major brands having Les Pauls, Strats, Guild, Carvin and Ibanez and this guitar ranks up there among all the best.
Every player who loves a well built guitar, with genius design features, OWES themselves a G&L guitar. I have owned 3 of them (ASAT Classic, USA Legacy and a Doheny) and each one, to me at least, was the finest of that style guitar I had ever played. Whether they had MFD or Alnico pick ups, the chime and versatility were phenomenal. I also love that you are featuring the Emerald Blue and Andromeda colors in this video both are very hard to photograph and need to be seen live to appreciate how they stand out among other standard colors.
I found out about G&L about 12 years ago. There was another online guitar retailer in the Pacific Northwest of the US and whenever they did a pedal demo, he would say "I'm playing my G&L Legacy into a '65 amp SoHo (or something like that). I never heard of G&L but got curious, so once I heard it was Leo Fender's final company I was intrigued and ordered a custom build from them. It was a T-style ASAT Bluesboy with a humbucker in the neck position. Clear orange over swamp ash with white top binding. Maple fingerboard, white pick guard. When it arrived I was blown away by the build quality and how beautiful it looked, and then I plugged her in and WOW. Such great tone. I then ordered 3 more G&Ls over the next 10 years so I have 4 now, love 'em! Thanks for this video, everyone should know about G&L!
Captain is starting to steer the ship! It’s been a pleasure watching your playing develop over the years. You’ve always been so tasteful with your choice of notes and patterns, that it’s a delight to see you push your skill into daring territory!
I have a fallout tribute and absolutely love it. The p90 in the neck might be my favorite pickup of all my guitars. It produces a great bluesy sound. With the p90 and the humbucker, you can play just about anything on this guitar.
The Tribute Comanche usually comes with a push/pull pot to engage neck and bridge or all three pickups. Added value/versatility. Wasn't mentioned in Pete's sound test. I own a number of G&Ls all with their own sound and vibe. Went a bit G&L crazy after I visited the factory and their booth at NAMM back in January 2019.
I like to think that everyone who is a guitar enthusiast knows about G&L by now - if Leo's name is associated with the brand, it's hard to go wrong. Also, Pete's playing on the outro - Ay, Carumba! 🔥🔥🔥
I love my ASAT Classic....'90's model with a maple neck! and my USA Legacy w/ rosewood board. Those older cases smell funny though, unless you are a glue sniffer...lol
Paul Gagon was previously with Charvel and Fender. He worked on the design of the "Clapton boost circuit". From what I've read, Leo did not want to produce Fender "copies", but the feedback his sales reps were getting pushed him to support the idea. It was not fully adopted until after his death, however. The alnico pickups that G&L supplies with their guitars were based on Leo's modifications and designed by Paul Gagon. If anyone has factual information to contradict this, feel free to comment.
Yep. As has been mentioned, the Doheny is named after the beach. It's at least one of the 1st few California beaches (back when Southern California was a good place to be) where the original "Surf" sound was made popular. But, as with most original sounds, and other world changing stuff, the surf sound was likely actually born in someone's bedroom or garage.
I've got a Tribute Legacy and a US Doheny. I ended up swapping out the pickups and pots on the legacy for a more traditional strat experience and I love it. The completely stock Doheny is one of my favorite guitars in my collection. The quality and finish are better than my American Fenders.
I love, love my Doheny. Comes with the PTB (passive treble bass) knob, that is simply fire when it comes to a wide range of sounds you can get out of it.
Middle position of the pup selector on the ASAT Classic is humb-cancelling. I have a 2000 American ASAT Classic Semi-Hollow with two MDF single coils and won't ever part with it. You are totally correct, more people need to know about G&L; they are fabulous instruments!
Ive been using G&L's since the 90s. In that time i purchased a lot of Fenders as well. As of now i still own 6 G&Ls and only one Fender. The new Fender Mod II is the best Fender (the particular one i have) ive ever touched and ive owned custom shop models etc. So in 30 some odd years of playing ive only found ONE Fender that can keep up with my G&Ls.
Can confirm... The Doheny is named for the beach in Dana Point (named from Edward L. Doheny, who donated the land to the state). Before the harbor, it was one of the best surf spots in California, and heavily trafficked by famous surfers... and probably Leo himself.
I have a late 90s/early 2000s US made Comanche and it is an unbelievably good guitar. As good as any Strat-style guitar I've played and I've played quite a few. The Z-coil pickups are great, and while they are Strat-ish, they definitely do their own thing and that's awesome.
The Fallout is inspired by the SC 1 and 2, that were modded a lot as Lee said. They still sell the SC2, only USA made. There was also an SC3, which evolved into the S500 if I am not mistaken. I wish they released a tribute version of the SC2, it's amazing. There is a demo by Andy of Proguitarshop and you can see it's very versatile, sounds round and nice played clean, and like a thunder when you add some distortion. Pd. there is also a MFD "humbucker" style pickup: the f100 :)
G&L is fantastic! I went through a LOT of Fender Strats.....and sold them all...trying to find something to fill that Strat sonic place for my Musical Tool Box. Then I found a G&L S-500. That was pretty nice. It felt right in my hands finally. Oh! ..but then I found a G&L Legacy! U.S. made version with a 3 tone sunburst finish (my S-500 was a metallic Red with a little "Sparkle" ...and that okay, but...). I sold my S-500 knowing it would rarely be used again! This Legacy...... I got it back when Leo was still in the Shop! He knocked it Out Of The Park! What a GREAT Guitar! In every way! I also had an ASAT Special for a while in Blue Metallic. I liked that a LOT! But I decided to build my own T-Style because I still didn't like the Single-Cut shape of the G&L. (I made my own version of a Double-Cut T-Style ... my own headstock shape...AND a humbucker in the middle position with a 5 way switch. (and..... The Emerald Blue ... is ..... BLUE! More Blue than Green!) "Doheney" is a beach in Southern California! I love it when you guys go into a JAM! SWEET!
Love my G&L's... ASAT Special is my favorite tone wise, though would prefer it in a SC-2 body. In addition have ASAT Classic S, LE-2, SC-3, ASAT Z-2 (thought I'd never find one them for sale), and a JB-2 bass. Have intentions of selling any of them. MFD pickups have rich, full, articulate tone.
I think they sound awesome. I'm hoping that they do a 24 fret version along the lines of a HM strat or a Charvel with stainless steel frets and Zed/Zee coils at some point in the future.
I've just purchased one of these, from somewhere beginning with A, ha. ASAT Tribute Classic Tele, looks great, sounds great, and plays great, i love it. Don't let the looks fool you though, these things want to rock, those MFD pick ups, to my ears, are more like P90's, nothing wrong with that of course, unless your looking for a more traditional tele sound that is. A lot of guitar for the money, very happy.
@@thebrysmith3 I do 1/4 turns until I get the sound I like. I think the most I've ever done is 1 full turn (360°). The nice thing is you don't even need to remove the strings to adjust.
Dad bought me a 1980 GL F100 for my 15th birthday in 1985. Pearl finish Ebony fretboard Trem bar to the deck and it stays in perfect tune. Coil tap toggles Double humbuckers Skunk stripe Visible dowel indents in the finish. He paid $500 Greatest guitar I've ever had
Thanks for the vid guys. It is time someone opened other guitar players eyes to these products, particularly those in UK. The US models are cool and competitive, and the Tribute Series are very keenly priced and not a long way behind the US models. I have a 2009 Legacy Tribute which came with standard Strat style wiring. I have had a Passive Treble and Bass (PTB) style set of pots added and have a push pot to make a 7 way selector. I changed the bridge pup to a SD SSL6 but will probably look to replace it with a mini humbucker. I bought the Legacy in 2011 for £425 and the mods and setup have taken the price to circa £610, but it is now an awful lot of guitar, especially since the pots upgrade. I recently sold a MIM Tele and will replace it soon with an ASAT Tribute. I am brand sold on G&L and the only other brands I would look at are the Yamaha Revstar range, and some Harley Benton gems.
A bit unrelated, but can I ask how much it cost you to fit the push pot that makes it a 7 way switch, please? I was thinking of putting one in my strat. Does it let you play in-phase when you're using middle/neck pickups (sounding more like a gumbucker than two single coils)?
I owned a Yamaha Revstar only for a few months. Aside from the stunning looks I’d didn’t care for the feel or tone of it. I have a Doheny Tribute & the craftsmanship and sound in my opinion is superior to my MIM fender strat.
I played a G&L ASAT through a Mesa Boogie back in the '80's. Best guitar tone I've ever heard/had. Unfortunately I didn't have the $$$. But it left a lasting impression on how good it was.
Had a Tribute Doheny but it arrived with uneven, sharp fret ends. A neck that wasn't set correctly after I had all that fixed the bridge pickup failed. I had it fixed again but swapped it . Would like to try a USA Doheny.
You certainly drew the short straw there. My Tribute Doheny arrived perfectly set up and plays like heaven. I'm glad to see you aren't giving up on the brand. The USA Doheny gets rave reviews.
@@charlie-obrien Still think they're the coolest looking guitars. I have a snippet of a song called "Andy's Summer" with the Doheny in action lol. It's a lo-fi home-spun cellphone vid.
The Comanche is the most awesome guitar made! You forgot about the 2nd toggle switch when used, changes main pickup selector - 1st or 5th position, neck and bridge pickups. Almost a perfect Telecaster. 2nd or 4th position, all 3 pickups! A beefy Strat/Les Paul tone! So many tone options!
I much prefer the hardware on a G&L to any comparable brand ;)

I've got a purple G&L Tribute Doheny with P90's, maple neck with a pearlized pick guard and black hardware to match the black rectangular inlays, coming in the next few months, I can't wait
I have a G&L ASAT S3, it has three of the jumbo MFD pickups, 5 way switch, with expander. I have the tell you the tone with all three pickups on via the expander with fuzz is so good sounding.
Eve Croquet proclaims that two tone knobs are quite fitting. As bass and treble are tones. Sweet video…give some o the love to the G&L! I wish I could find em in the shops to try?
The Comanche also has a push pull which can get you all 3 pickups together in positions 2 and 4 or give you neck and bridge together without the middle pickup in positions 1 and 5. Position 3 is the same middle pickup whether pushed or pulled... so you skipped two available tones ;-)
Great playing at the beginning! Do you think G&Ls feel chunkier? I've tried a ASAT recently and It was a bit different than what I was used too with Fenders.
Great playing guys. Someone needs to suggest G&L produce a short scale line - 24” guitars with tremolo like the Jagmaster. 😉 I have a great G&L Fallout Tribute but the scale is too long for me. It’s getting sold. 😞
that black sparkle doheny is just ridiculously beautiful. Thought I had all my dream guitars including a tribute fallout and an Espada (the crown jewel of my guitars) but I think I've just found a new "have to have this" guitar. That andromeda black is killer. If I didn't already have a fallout, I would be ordering that shell pink one tonight.
Proposal offered here for Andertons to have a contest where the winners can spend the day talking and playing guitar and croquet with Pete and the Captain 🙋♂️
Can you guys do a video where you try and get the best set of tones you can. I always love watching the videos because the tone is always so good. Like grab the best sounding les Paul, strat, tele, 335, etc and best amps and pedals and just go to town
If you spend around 1,500 to 2,000 on a Fender, you are getting like their 3rd best guitar. If you spend that much on a G&L you are getting a USA made Fullerton Deluxe that is the rival of any solid body builder out there, including the PRS Silver Sky (I admit to having no knowledge of Music Man). So a shoot out just wouldn't be fair.
My first real guitar was a G&L Legacy. It was awesome. But it was made to be more fendery with a vintage radius and non MFD pickups. Had a tribute S500 for a while. It was good but as Lee and Pete say it wasn't a strat to ally, so it was hard to switch between it and my strat in the set.
I used to think, what's the point, they're like weird looking Fenders. But my god they're fantastic. Genuine upgrades and clever progress over and beyond Fenders. Their pickups sound fantastic, and the control options on many of them add enormous versatility. Can't speak highly enough about G&L. They're the only guitars that are just so good I can sincerely say i don't care about the headstock being a bit weird.
Honestly. I really have to have serious self control to not buy a guitar from you guys every week. I do think I need to consider getting the Fallout. I don't know what but it being pink and that shape and those pickups just speaks to me. Great vid as always!
I am just wondering when you guys will review the G&L S-500... the pickups, neck radius, and fantastic switch make it a head and shoulder improvement over the Legacy...
