I really admire your realistic view of making wooden swords. You consider proportion and center of balance, unlike some who just go for looks. And with no power tools!

That center dowel is gold. I just made one of these out of Lignum Vitae.

You earned a subscribe today just for the tune you whistled at the start of this video :) But then I stayed for the rest and really enjoyed how you work. I appreciate your talking through the process, addressing your concerns and how you overcame the difficulties.

If you made the blade out of two pieces laminated together this would give you the opportunity to put some lead in the blade to refine the balance point

Thank you very much! I don't think I'll do that as it's not the focus of the channel, and also, classes have been suspended since I posted this video because of covid, so I haven't been able to practice :(

@@GillisBjork Yes, hoping COVID passes soon! No HEMA schools here in western New York (US), so attempting to self-teach from RU-vid vids. Keep up the excellent craftsmanship - I really enjoyed watching the video.

Thank You Gillis....I noticed when turning the pommel using the 3-jaw chuck. Did you receive the other set of jaws for holding? A lot of times when chucks are passed down they only retain the jaws installed on the chuck and the second are just lost. I suspect that is the case? .... Anyway very nice sword and I do, again, enjoy your determination with all your excellent projects..... I have shared your channel with others and I hope your success grows with time.......TM
@GillisBjork

I do not have another set of jaws unfortunately! The chuck is in general not great for wood, I haven't turned anything in a while now but if I need to do it again, I might look into other chuck types. Thank you so much for sharing the channel!

@revandarthlordofthesith6796
with long sword you want the balance closer to the gard really you want all the weight in your hands for faster and more agile swings slashes stabs and cuts other than that you did vary well

What is the swedish word for the pommel? Do you know how it was called in 15th C Sweden? In modern German it is "knauf", a cognate of the English "knob". In late medieval times it was called "Klos" which basically means dumpling :D

I loved your project, do you still have your sketch? I want to build a similar one with my father in law, but I don't know how to sketch, how did you research for yours?
@GillisBjork
@GillisBjork 3 месяца назад
Thanks! I just looked at proportions of historical swords, and took some inspiration from fantasy art for the details. If you plan to use it for training, you'll want to look up where the balance point should be, and make sure the blade is thin and flexible. Good luck!

@@GillisBjork one last thing, which wood did you use? Sorry to bother you
@GillisBjork
@GillisBjork 3 месяца назад
No worries! The blade and handle scales areoak, the crossguard and pommel is a heavy tropical wood (I suspect ipe but don't know for sure) to help with the balance. If you can't find a superdense tropical, I'd suggest the heaviest hardwood you've got for the pommel, handle scales and crossguard, and then something lighter for the blade. Wood Database is a great site for looking up wood densities.

How do you make out of the wooden long sword and where is the template?
@GillisBjork
@GillisBjork 3 года назад
Not sure what you're asking with the first part, but as for a template, there is none. I design based on the wood I have and how the grain is looking. Just cut your pieces so that the natural patterns look beautiful to your eyes! And overall approximate dimensions for things like this can of course be found at sites that sell reproductions and sparring swords.
