I walked out of the theater absolutely furious with Marvel. For all their budgets, massive special effects teams, and highly paid actors, none of them made me feel. EEAaO hurt my soul in it's journey between Jobu Tupaki's nihilism and Waymond's combat-through-kindness. The fight choreography was better. The practicals felt genuine, and the special effects lacked the MCU's sameness. And the script. Here are characters that I actually cared about and with motivations and feelings that I could identify with. I'm told that some of the later Marvel shows have been quite good. I just no longer really care.

I knew this movie was gonna be something interesting, from the absolute monster buzz it was getting for winning a bunch of Oscars after being released at the start of the year, but I never expected it to make me bawl my goddamn eyes out like a baby for the last part of it. I also will die on the hill that Stephanie Hsu deserved that oscar more than Jamie Lee Curtis. Jamie was great yes, she's pretty much never bad, but the entire emotional core and axis of the movie, the single most important thing that this entire thing was hanging on, was Joy and Evelynn. And if Joy hadn't been on the same level, none of it would have worked. Stephanie carried half the movie on her back and I really wish she would have gotten the statue for it.

Never forget the Oscars (even when they're applauding something you love) are but a bureaucratic old boys club. They give awards to recognize the deserving, but this intention is pretty low on their list of priorities. After all with so many films, who can truly objectively deserve something heads and shoulders more than the thousands of other colleagues in the field. It's politics, with many stakeholders, many undue influences, and many corruptions. I'm not saying it's worthless, but you're putting yourself in perilous ludicrous territory if you're banking on the integrity of the academy awards.

I was SOBBING in the cinema at this film. The directors wrote Evelyn to have ADHD (and the director discovered through his research that he also in fact had ADHD) which is why the whole experience feels overwhelming and unmanagable. As someone with ADHD it captures how it feels so well, from having a messy life to constantly feeling like a failure. I have a dysfunctional relationship with my own parents and it really tapped into the core of my own depression surrounding that too. I was in BITS after this lol.

the thing about this movie is that it has so many layers and its themes run deep. you touched on one of them but my favorite is the one that is hinted at by Joy, when she says that there are only ever a few specks of time when anything ever makes any sense. it's essentially about the fact that life is short, and chaotic and despite its ups and downs, it's the ups that truly make life make any sense so we should cherish those few specks of time when they occur. thanks for another fantastic reaction Cass! ❤

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this film. Not every film is for every one but even if I wasn't Asian-American I'd still love this masterpiece. The obvious themes were generational trauma, depression, familial obligation, taking the good things in your life for granted...etc. As an Asian-American, being a nisei i felt seen by this film. But as a manic/depressive Joy describing the bagel..."all my hopes and dreams..." "...it becomes the truth; nothing matters..." "...feels nice...if nothing matters, then all the pain and guilt for making nothing of your life...goes away..." I've never felt so seen on this. This may not have been the most accessible portrayal of depression, to me (Gretchen in You're The Worst is), I love that Daniels went for it. By taking the viewer to a funny moment, followed by a sad moment, folliowed by a heartwarming moment, you are opened up to the different emotions far more than if it was all sad, or all happy. I actually watched the multiverse shots of Michelle frame-by-frame and there are some crazy images they snuck in for just 1 or 2 frames, including one that's a shot of Michelle in front of a green screen while the VFX crew can all be seen on a Zoom call on the right, Michelle's face in the bark of a tree and a bunch of grapes, etc. Most of them you don't even really see. There's also a quick 2 frame shot of Stephanie holding an Academy award in the shot where she is Jobu and holding out her arm while different things change, which turned out to be a very prescient choice by the VFX team! I was so happy that it won all those Oscars, especially Ke Huy Quan because he was SO great in his first acting gig in over 20 years (and to have the Oscar for best picture given to him by Harrison Ford - Indy & Short Round back together) . And, of course, the Queen Michelle Yeoh! All her decades of acting funneled down into this part and she was amazing. If you ever want to see her in an amazing martial arts film, which is also an incredible romance, you should watch "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" which is in my top 5 favorite films of all time. And she totally cemented her full bad-ass status in "Police Story 3: Supercop" with Jackie Chan where she jumped a motorcycle onto a moving train (among other amazing fight scenes and stunts). Glad you didn't listen to dumb ol' Carly and watched this one!

The rock scene is perfectly done, the serenity it brings into the chaos before it and afterwards always puts a tear in my eye and the way they turned that universe into a powerful analogy of what happens in the others is just awesome. 47:32 totally with Cassie here. I've been watching this channel for a year now, and this is totally not a Carly movie. She is very literal with what is on the screen and reacts very positively from well crafted narratives . However I knew from the start that Cassie would find charm and heart in this, as she has a real feel for allegory, but also the various storytelling styles that cinema provides. This really is a wonderful whimsical film and I loved this reaction immensely.

I watched it with some friends and we were having a great time laughing at this movie and reacting to it, but we were all on the verge of tears at the end. I am so happy you gave this movie a chance! It is my favorite for so many reasons but the multiple messages I can get are profound. There's so much spiritual and philosophical concepts as well as metaphors for mental health. I remember the creators talking how they filmed with the intention of Evelyn having undiagnosed ADHD. As someone who is Autistic and has ADHD, I can say this movie is spot on with how a mind with both can perceive reality. Its so hard to stay grounded, like you are being pulled apart and put back together all the time. I resonate with Joubu's cynical outlook, her desire for peace (yes I live with suicidal ideation) and I have mother issues so this movie hits hard. "All we get are a few specks of time...then I will cherish these specks of time...I will always want to be here with you"

This is one of my favourite movies in recent memory. It's such a fun movie but at the same time it has some very deep hitting points and dialogue. It's beautifully shot as well. The scene with Ke and Michelle in the alleyway where he says "In another life, I would have really liked to do laundry and taxes with you" it both gorgeous and heartbreaking.

This movie was so bizarre and original and funny and inspiring, all at once. After its initial release, I read a blurb about it online that said it was in only a handful of theaters around the country. I checked locally and found that it was actually in my local Cinemark, but only for a limited number of shows. So I left work early one day to see it, and was blown away by it. All of the cast's performances were outstanding - including James Hong, who at 93 is still as SHARP an actor as he eve was! - and I was floored by how good Ke Huy Kwan still is after all these years. I remember that the scene that blew me away was the fanny pack fight. I still think it's one of the most badass pieces of movie fight choreography of the last thirty years, and Ke did all of it himself. But I never thought it would go anywhere. The Oscars usually ignore sci-fi and fantasy films entirely when it comes to acting, directing, and best picture, so I was floored when I heard that it had so many nominations. And I think Ke's acceptance speech is possibly the greatest Oscar moment ever. Everything about this film's story is great.

A thing to remember with Michelle Yeoh: She's actively working to LOOK bad at martial arts, because she's just that good. Example: 5:28 Michelle can already do it with ease, no problem, because she knows the art of treating object like an extension of her body. But she's working to make it look like shes only doing it because she owns a laundromat.

Damn. I haven't watched this movie or reactions to it for over a month now, and so of course watching this made me cry.... again... this movie never fails to make me cry 😅 Especially Waymond's "be kind when we don't know what's going on" speech. It's amazing to me that there are still a vocal amount of people who refuse to admit the themes of depression and suicide in this. Despite Joy/Jobu explicitly saying things like "I get it, you're feeling a good thing, but eventually all of that just... goes away"; and "I built it because I wanted to see if I could finally escape; like, actually die"; and "if nothing matters, then all the pain and guilt you feel for making nothing of your life just... goes away." Maybe you have to have experienced depression personally to understand how incredibly relatable that is to depression, but as someone who struggles with it every day of my life, it *hits hard.* Oh, and there's a nerdy detail I really like as well, being a nerd myself: their description of the multiverse is almost *exactly* what mathematicians -- and AI-related computer scientists -- call a "latent space". Where each point in the space -- called an "embedding" -- is arranged so that other points close to it are more similar, while points farther away are more different. And "verse jumping" is effectively a guided walk through the latent space. It's a neat little consideration, whether it was intentional or not. ...but I digress and I think I might have just been too nerdy for the internet there for a moment 😅
@dandyfluff
@dandyfluff 7 месяцев назад
Never hesitate to nerd out! Your comments about latent space reminded me of something I read by Michio Kaku (physicist), but it was just a flash, then gone. Now I’ll have to try and figure it out or it’ll drive me nuts. Guess I’ll be poring over a couple of books today (and hope it was in there and not some random journal article). I think what you said about depression is accurate. I don’t think you have to have experienced it to get this film, but I do feel that if you *have* experienced depression, this movie will absolutely hit you like a ton of bricks. I kind of wondered if that was why Carly didn’t like the film and Cassie didn’t have nearly the emotional reaction others have had. I don’t know what they’ve been through personally, but maybe they haven't experienced that particular demon. Hope that’s the case. I’d not wish that emotional void on anyone.

I watched this film during my plane flight from Japan to the US to attend a graduate school. Just few hours before, my mother was insisting on throwing all of my belongings away, including things from my childhood that I know for a fact that she knows that they're important to me. My father was fortunately sympathetic toward me. But at the same time, he was telling my family and I that the next time we would all be in the same room together would be a funeral. I only said my goodbyes to my younger sister and my father, because there was just too much history of abuse regarding my mother. My father is kind enough to support me financially, which I am grateful for, but I also found out that he may have been verbally abusing my mother all this time behind my sister and I's backs, and I had to call him out on it when I caught him in the act in a group chat. Watching this film while my mind was processing all of my personal turmoil was intense. I think the writer or director knows what it's like to have this kind of pain. It feels like a personal film to make for them, and it has become a personal film to watch for me. I do strongly believe that the story, combined with the stellar acting, cinematography, soundtrack, and fight choreography, makes this one of the best films of all time.

The absurdity and randomness IS key to the deeper message. Evelyn at the start of the film is what happens when you have too much order. Stultifying order, can’t adapt efficiently to changes in the environment, too much attention to things in the past, things going unnoticed until the danger is upon you. While Joy feels lost and aimless, just spinning in circles going nowhere, she is too much chaos. It’s no arbitrary decision that in order for Evelyn to access her potential she must do something random. She has to incorporate chaos into her existence in order to achieve her full potential. Which is true, you can’t get anywhere new if you only stay in your lane, you have to take a risk and do something new. You also can’t have chaos all the time or you end up in nihilism. Waymond’s the answer, you have to do good, be kind, especially when you don’t know what’s going on. Live with humility and live well. He represents what happens when you can achieve the balance between order and chaos. It doesn’t mean everything will always go your way, but it will be the best way forward overall.

That's why I'm so interested in the idea of infinite possibilities and yeah, that's when the depth and bizarreness starts coming into play, like the versions of Evelyn and the Tax Lady with hot dog fingers, and Spider-Pig 😂 I find it funny that you mention The Fifth Element at the end, because I really love that one, too Also I'm so stoked that this was essentially Ke Huy Quan's "renaissance" movie and I hope he starts landing roles that he likes!

Believe it or not, this film gets more interesting with more rewatches. I rewatched this like 20 times since it’s release and had an epiphany or realization every time. This film actually deals with remarkably deep concepts and intelligently hides them in absurdism. This movie seeks to answer the question of how to live in the world through abstract representation. The core theme is derived from Daoist philosophy. Chaos and Order, what happens when there’s too much order or too much chaos and the path to balance.
@Vaillle
@Vaillle 11 месяцев назад
Example: This film seems random but almost nothing is done randomly. If you see a cookie in one scene, you’ll see it come back again in a later scene. Believe it or not, Jobu walking in for the first time with a pig on a leash isn’t the first time we see a “pig on a leash”. The camera zoomed in on a little stuffed pig keychain on the end of the fannypack during the first fight scene. When Evelyn decides she must become like Jobu, she links to the singer universe. Both her and Jobu now wear red eye makeup signaling that Evelyn is trying to see the world as her daughter is seeing it.
@Vaillle
@Vaillle 11 месяцев назад
Dang it! I’m watching your reaction and I just realized another thing. In the rock scene, Jobu’s text is white and Evelyn’s is black. They could have made them both white and kept the text on opposite sides of the screen and we would still understand who was speaking, but they don’t do that. Evelyn represents the Order(white) side of the yin and yang, Jobu is the Chaos(black) side. But they have opposites color text now, why? Evelyn has accepted the bagel, but Jobu was still looking for her mom(order) so a part of her still longs for it. In this universe, she respects the order of things, hence why she says, “just be a rock”. So great.
