What's interesting is that Waymond has no character arc. We do, with our perspective of him. He remains unchanged.

That isn't entirely true. Alpha Waymond is an entirely different character. He is an alpha male. He takes control. Even picks up and carries Evelyn against her will but he also fails. Nearly any other Hollywood movie the Alpha male wins the day and typically with violence. Here the Alpha male fails, and you could argue that Beta Waymond is the hero. He is what allows Evelyn to grow past the conflict and realize her place in it. She says she is, learning to fight like him. Using his kindness.
@zitronentee
@zitronentee Год назад
@@darthwhit Imo, Waymond is still flat character with no character arc/hero's journey. But he has character reveal. Alpha and Beta Waymond are counted as different persons, as they are disconnected from each other, unlike Evelyn and Joy. His outlook on life stay the same throughout the movie, although we don't know much about him much at the beginning because we see from Evelyn's perspective. So, it's Evelyn's perspective of Waymond changed while Waymond himself stay the same.
@aresef
@aresef Год назад
To elaborate, our perspectives on both Taxes Waymond and Alpha Waymond change. We see Taxes Waymond as goofy and then we realize how his kindness is his superpower, just as Evelyn learns to harness it for herself. We think Alpha Waymond is cool and then come to realize he's a manipulative jerk who left Evelyn when she needed him.

Best movie I've seen in a really long time. I left the cinema with so many emotions. What an experience. I laughed so hard, I cried like a baby and I gained a new perspective on things. I feel everyone in the cinema went through the same and it united us. EVERYTHING about this movie is perfect. I can't think of a single thing I would cut out or change. It's so absurd. I just love it so much. And I love your reaction! @@KelseasComments We've heard so many "love quotes" the past years that have gone viral, like: "I love you 3000" "I love you in every universe" "What is grief if not love persevering?" (my favourite before watching this movie) but what is a better one than the laundry and taxes one? Because love is not always about the exciting part of a relationship. It's about being there with each other, cherishing every moment, enjoying or making the dullest things bearable just because you're together. "You are right. Why would I want to be here with you? It doesn't make sense. I could be anywhere. But I choose to be here with you. I will always choose to be here with you." is fighting for the second place with the WandaVision one tho.

The movie was just so insanely symbolic for me, when she started using the googly eyes to fight I just completely burst into tears. The googly eyes were how Waymond fought the mundane aspects of life, through injecting a little joy into them with googly eyes. Joy learns this after "infecting" him with what she has learned, and sees everything from his perspective. The movie really is just all about perspective and always considering that behind every human is a story, not so dissimilar from our own, everyone just wants to be loved and understood. The scene with Joy's mother, and then with her mothers father about her sexuality really mirrors how younger generations view issues like these. We've all experienced these things and have accepted them on the Internet, our parents haven't had the same luxury and sometimes it's extremely difficult for both sides to understand one another. This really stood out to me when Waymond says "Please be kind, especially when we (older generation) don't know what's going on." We as young people expect older people to understand by default, but ignore that they grew up without access to information like us. We get mad at them easily for this, and it's excruciating for them to be yelled at for something they just need help understanding.

I think the googly eyes (and the fact that Waymond puts them on everything) also represents Waymond's capacity to see the humanity in everything, and this his capacity for empathy.

One important visual motif that I missed on my first viewing is that the Googly Eyes is the inverse colors of the Everything Bagel. It is Waymond's existentialism vs Jobu's nihilism. It is the ying-yang and just part of the circles that are visuals you find throughout the movie starting with the opening shot. As for your initial observation that his name was "Alpha Waymond", the Alpha part was intended to be perceived that way by Daniels. They wanted the trope of the 'alpha' (totally disavowed and disproven claim about wolves) being the butt kicker and not 'weak' like our Waymond but by the end we of course realize that Alpha Waymond didn't actually do anything but be aggressive and start fights. But it was the Waymond who fights with love and acceptance who allowed Evelyn to embrace her Joy.

The Daniels really did attempt to put everything "on" a movie and succeeded. It's great to see Michelle Yeoh getting the recognition she deserves. She is an absolute screen legend. Those not familiar with her earlier Hong Kong films should seek them out. It was brilliant to include footage of actual red carpet moments in the "Wong Kar Wai universe" scenes. Ke Huy Quan's performance was special also. He stopped acting for over 20 years due to a lack of opportunities. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a mid-career renaissance.

If you love this movie, I'd highly highly recommend a movie called "Synecdoche, New York". It deals with a lot of similar themes and ideas, and is also a masterpiece of abstract absurdism and existential truths. It's also what I consider Phillip Seymour Hoffman's greatest performance. I don't think it'd ever win any polls unfortunately, as it's not that well known and popular, but it would mean the world to me if you reacted to it. I guarantee it's like nothing you've seen before!

Genius is not a word I use lightly but Charlie Kaufman is one. His body of work is matched only by a few other filmmakers of the last 20 years. His last film, "I'm Thinking of Ending Things," was the best film of 2020. If you like Kaufman and especially "Synecdoche, New York," you may like Nathan Fielder. He is kind of like if Andy Kaufman and Charlie Kaufman had a child who graduated from one of Canada's top business schools with really good grades. Amazing reaction my friend Kelsea!!....In 2017, the music world was shocked by the bursting onto the scene of a 22-year-old singer named Dimash Kudaibergen, who performed on the famous Chinese competition show for professional singers called “The Singer”... It was just It was necessary for this young man to make his first appearance, making a cover of one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse", to be considered from that moment on as the best singer in the entire planet....No one in the musical field had ever seen a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges above 7 octaves and several semitones, that is, all 88 keys of a digital piano, which reaches a little more than 7 octaves and as if that weren't enough, sing the more than 12 languages...Since then all kinds of experts (Vocal coach, analysts, singing teachers, youtubers, reactors, etc.) have dedicated themselves to reviewing their presentations to try to understand how someone can sing this way...The incredible thing is that that presentation in China was in 2017 and 5 years have passed since then, but what Dimash has done in these 5 years is to further improve his wide vocal range, which is currently practically above of the 8 octaves... The Covid pandemic stopped his concerts worldwide, all with tickets sold in just seconds, via the internet, but at the same time it ended up catapulting him to the top of popularity worldwide...Anyway, since I think you are one of those reactors who have not yet met this impressive singer, here is the link of that presentation in China in 2017, with the song S.O.S. and I would like you to mention my name as the person who recommended him to you..It is a more recent video than the others, so it does not have the same number of views as the previous ones, which have millions of views, but it is a more complete video, with an intro, subtitles in several languages and with the improved quality of audio and sound....ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bDX3FhmyNac.html
