WALL-E! Or if you wanna get technical, WALL·E, is regarded as one of the best Pixar movies and I'm here to….agree? Yeah probably. This is Part 1 because I ran out of time while rewriting the conclusion. I promise I'm not planning on making this a habit! Here's everything right with WALL·E!

OOoooooh I totally don't think that WALL-E's Personality is due to a Malfunction. I suspect that WALL-E'S personality is due to a designed Ghost in the Machine type algorithm in his software. WALL-E has those Media Function Keys on his body that let him record new information and add it to his cache of knowledge. I assume the original designers put this feature in so the units could be programmed with specific directives out in the field by B&L employees. However, I think the units were also designed to record all new unique information they deemed "useful" to their main directive. We see WALL-E do this when he records the stars and hand holding and all of that. My theory is that WALL-E is fairly similar to all of the other WALL-E units, but after adding more and more extraneous data over the course of centuries, his personality evolved from simple objective commands to a full on Positronic level consciousness. I think after decades of virtually doing the identical trash collecting movements, and the other unit's began to fail and deactivate WALL-E's program began to collect random bits of information on the items to better increase efficiency. He began collecting data on the different sizes and shapes of items, the weights and densities, how easy/hard they would to be compacted; and that eventually ended up creating subroutines that wondered about the purpose of the items. More items led to more curiosities, more curiosities lead to more need for WALL-E to record new information to add to his directive cache, and after a long ass time, you got a sentient little dude all built off of trial and error data collecting. So yeah, I do not believe that WALL-E's consciousness came from a malfunction that happened one day, I believe it is an unexpected feature of a device that has been left running LONG past it's intended longevity. It's one of the cooler things about the movie I think.

There's actually a bonus feature on the digital version of Wall•E (and possibly the disc, I'm not sure) that explains all of the robots' purposes. It mentions Wall•E has a permanent malfunction, that being a personality and a love for musicals (hence why he's so attached to Hello, Dolly!). It even goes into depth with the background robots, like D•FIB (the defibrillator bot) and BURN•E (the dude that Walle and Eve accidentally lock outside. He has his own short film, go watch it). The world building put into this movie is absolutely ASTOUNDING. The bonus features really show this. They came up with a floor plan for the entirety of the Axiom. They came up with a full captain's introduction video. They even went into more depth with the story, specifically what exactly "Operation Cleanup" was and what the plan for it was. They really went nuts with the world building, and in part because of this I absolutely love just watching the bonus features without watching the movie. the thing about WALL-E's sentience, is that it only happened because he was left on for too long. he may have started out with one goal "Pick Up Trash", but overtime he both found more efficient ways to do it and found things he didn't classify as trash. just like in evolution, most everything has a purpose. He might've used the Atari to calibrate his servos after self-repairs, he might've used the iPod/VHS array to calibrate his internal piezos and cameras. but most of the stuff he has, he used to learn. because that's what happens when something tries to be more efficient, it learns. and much like humans, it develops an instinct to learn, to gather information, and to utilize that information. WALL-E's sentience isn't a malfunction, it's a consequence of design choices.

@Michael Fixedsys I also feel it briefly touches on the thought exercise of how many parts can you replace before you are someone else. If you "switch heads" with someone are you still you on someone else's body, or are they still them with someone else's head? In the context of transportation, where physical objects are 'destroyed' and 'recreated' elsewhere, is this recreated person the same one, or a different one? Where did the original one go? Is it our memories that make us who we are, or our personality? If we forget, or remember our memories differently are we now different people? If our personalities change, are we the same person? Are we more that just electrons firing in mushy grey matter? You exist as a different version of yourself to each person you meet. You exist to you co-workers different than you do to your parents. Along the ideas of your perception is your reality and we can all experience the same thing but perceive it differently. I do like your idea of how described AI learning as it applies to WALL-E, and seems like a logical thing that would be added to increase efficiencies, avoid dangers, and increase lifespan.

I remember when i was younger my dad (who could not give less of a shit about movies) saw this with me at the cinema. He was going to take me to kung fu panda and he wasn't looking forward to it (the movie didn't look too good to him i assume). I must have seen an advert or something for Wall-E because i just out of now where said "Wall-E" immitating the robot's voice. He either must have liked the look of the film himself or read a review about it or something because he took me saying that as an oppertunity. So we saw Wall-E instead. I can't say if he loved it, but when it came out on DVD, he invited his friend and his kids over to watch it with me.

My favourite moment in this entire film is when Eve is re-building Wall-E, and she loves him so much and is so completely desperate for him to come back that she cannot even waste a few seconds pushing him to the open door, she blasts a hole in the ceiling because it is the fastest way for her to be reunited with him, even if it's only by a moment. That there is true love.

@Vitor82652

@@endminer9217 yes, and Up specially, because I think they discuss a subject barely brought up in movies: widowness, grieve after losing a long time partner, and how important it is to move on. Wall-E and Up are from 2008 and 2009 respectively, and still they both seem so recent and relevant.

I just noticed after watching the movie that by the end their positions are slightly reversed. Just slightly. Wall-E has just been cleaned by mo in the dump and is visibly cleaner and paler even if he's still boxy and scuffed up. Eve has just been dirty and scuffed, especially near her base, but she's still round shiny and sleek. They're starting to understand each other. Wall-E is starting to understand why Eve's directive is so important, and Eve realizes that there are other things. Or maybe I'm up way too late and looking way too deeply into things

I don't know if it was noticed, but I like the fact that Wall-E it's a reverse fish-out-of-water story. Think about it. Wall-E goes to this new place, by accident and following his love, but instead of learning from the other side, the other side learns from his actions in the place.
@mhawang8204

It's the narrative where the protagonist doesn't change, but everyone around him is changed by him. Paddington is another example.
@Royalname31
@Royalname31 3 года назад
@@mhawang8204 The reason why I describe it as a "fish out of water" is because of the character going to a completely different world they don't know. A lot of those stories where the character changes the people around them instead of them usually are set in an already recognizable place. But, WallE doesn't have that recognizable when he goes to the ship. Hell, Earth only appears for 10 minutes in the whole movie. But, I think your point is also valid

By the way, in case anyone is interested. During the scene @6:20 where Eve is saying Directive in different languages according to the screenplay the languages in order are: German, Japanese, Swahili, English. So the third language Eve uses is actually Swahili not Huttese. Though to be fair I can understand where they were coming from with that one.
