Exactly, like just look at the difference in views between HYLT and Lovesick Girls.. they were only released months apart but the difference is crazy. If a comeback doesn't appeal to me I simply don't engage and don't stream. Because that's the normal thing to do. And it's the only effective way to let the label know that this is not what I want. And this even goes for groups I stan. I have skipped on so many groups and comebacks because the music was boring or just not my style and that's ok! We don't have to engage with everything!

@@3rdelement10 yea obviously there are times when I do talk about things I don't like too, sometimes I just have lots of thoughts on it that I want to express. My comment was more about feeling like you have to engage with every comeback just because it's a group you like or simply because people are talking about it. Or feeling like you have to stream your fave's new song even when you don't actually like it much. Or going out of your way to comment under MVs of groups you don't even listen to to express your opinion and talk about how much you dislike them on social media. The point was that if you genuinely want to see less of something, the best way to achieve that is to not engage. Whatever gets attention in kpop, good or bad, brings in money. I just didn't feel like putting all this in my comment because it would be too long.

My rule is not to comment on an idol's body, period. Like seriously. Period. There is no appropriate time for it. I know people often have good intentions, but you are not their physician. You do not know this person and/or what their body "should" look like if "healthy". So any comment you give is just so much more likely to do harm than good that you should just leave it alone. If you actually care about this person you look up to, you can choose to talk about literally anything else pertaining to them.

yes the girl crush thing is so true!! they complain about how girl crush is overrated or whatever but its so obvious that they prefer girl crush songs mainly international fans. plus some international fans admit that they prefer those kinds of concepts/sounds than cute ones. take itzy for example. their concept aka royalty or chic concept everyone has been loving it but ever since sneakers and the bright concept released it seemed like a lot complained about it. not gonna be surprised if some of them are the same people that says girl crush or dark concepts are overrated yet 👁👄👁 Edit: I shouldn't have used ITZY as an example here LOL. I realised that groups not doing girl crush concept is a privilege, actually. Twice, for example, has a huge fanbase so they can release a bossa-nova chill song, and they'll get atention and sales anyways. But not all groups can stick to a chill or cute concept. Weeekly got bashed for that song. It's their only song with a noticeable amount negative feedback and their overall popularity went down from this release. The reason why it sold well is because more first week sales primarily come from pre-orders and day1 which mean people buy BEFORE HEARING THE SONG, almost entirely based on established popularity and/or quality of previous releases, or a pre-release promotion job well done. Doing girl crush did not help Weeekly at all, this claim in the video is wrong.

I'm really happy Loona switched back to more Fresh content with Flip That. It's a summer release so it might be just for now, but with Flip That being their first release to get more than 1 music show win they might stick with it. But yeah you're right, a group can only continue to do a different concept if they are established enough to keep fans around even if they suddenly switch it up (for example, of Blackpink were to come back with a cute song, people would still stream cause it's Blackpink) or if they established themselves immediately as a non girl crush group like Dreamcatcher

Overall, people don’t wanna think they have an effect on the industry. They don’t realize kpop is the product and they’re literally buying into it. It’s basic business: your audience wants something then you give it to them. It doesn’t help when you have fans doing stuff like mass streams or hashtags to show support for/disapprove actions. Y’all think just because a company doesn’t respond directly to you they don’t see it. THEY SEE EVERYTHING. I think my favorite example of the girl crush thing is probably LOONA’s Fl!p That. So many people were so excited saying finally something new until it actually came out. When it I saw a lot of them saying it’s bad and it’s not what they wanted and it’s like??? You're very wrong about one thing: you assume that people wanting something other than girl crush concept are the same people who complain about the new song not being what they wanted. There is one group of people who didn't want girl crush and you saw them in comments, they got what they wanted so they enjoy the song and are not flooding the comments anymore. And there is A DIFFERENT group of people who wanted girl crush or something else they didn't get and those are the people you now see in the comments. Just because you see all the comments coming from the same place does not mean it's the same people asking for 2 completely opposite things.

I also want to add favoritism.. k-pop stans always blame the companies for it when they don’t realize it’s their fault. Every comment they leave about the favoritism whether they’re complaining about it or not makes the company push the idol into the spotlight even more. And then they proceed to get mad whenever the “favorite” member gets more content/screen time than other members. Also, just because a member is more popular than others and the company shows it off, it doesn’t mean that they’re the favorite of the company. For example, IVE’s Wonyoung is always called “Starship’s favorite” and stuff like that, when Starship doesn’t even treat her that differently. She gets the same treatment as the other members (excluding content, screen times etc…) Starship doesn’t even defend her from hate, and as Cheryl mention in the video, that is ALSO k-pop stan’s fault.

Ugh, I hate what the kpop community has become in the past 2 years. Sure, before that hate was there but now it's increased by 10 fold and competition of Fandom to show that they are the most supportive has increased. I freaking hate queerbaiting. I also despise shipping culture. You can ship platonically, but once you start shipping them romantically, then there is a problem. Please stop pushing the narrative that guys being friends or friendly it means they are in love. It’s weird. I am not queer, so I don’t not fully understand the effects that queerbaiting has. But I do know it is wrong and it should stop. Queerbaiting is not only harmful to the queer community, but also to the idol. Korea is a pretty conservative country, and international fans pushing the queerbaiting will not only hurt actual queer community in Korea, but also idols who are queer, but do not feel safe to say so.

But for the last part it's not true, yes it's a conservative homophobic country but idols specifically aren't harmed bc what they do is normal for their job and fans+company+them(sometimes don't have much option but most could just negate) push for it. Where they can be hurt tho is their relationships with the person they are shipped with, or being uncomfortable of people assuming their sexuality (worse if they are part of the community and haven't accepted yet but fans are openly talking about it everywhere and it would feel like outing them), or they just don't like ppl putting them labels, talking for them. As a non American I understand why some of these kpop idols don’t realize when they’re doing or saying racist things or race stereotypes because knowing English is FAR different than knowing the culture and understanding what’s offensive because of the undertones and the history of certain acts or words , I don’t do or say those things because I learned English watching american content , so I know what certain things mean when others around me don’t , for example blackface it is something completely different than what non-Americans understand , if it’s a costume or smth they see it as a part of the costume because “ that’s what the person looks like I’m just trying to look like that person “ they don’t know the history of blackface and harms it has caused , or when wearing braids they don’t think “ African Americans were bullied and discriminated against because of these hairstyles for no reason and were told to hide it with wigs and etc “ because they don’t know it they see it as shallow as “oh it looks cool I want to do it too “ I’m not saying these are right , I’m just saying this is how they see it , because no one reaches them it isn’t something we learn in school or in our countries society , I try to educate if anyone does it around me but I can see why certain kpop idols don’t realize what they’re doing even if they know English or when they don’t know English , because we learn very formal basic English in schools not the details , and these sensitive issues didn’t happen to them or around them so they didn’t grow up seeing or learning about these things , but since kpop has a global appeal , they face the Criticism and they get confused but in this age of internet and social media , our cultures are becoming more global so if some idols don’t know these things they should be taught by the company because they’re literally launching them to international fame , but I see these things getting smaller and smaller probably because we’re all using social media and most of us are following the same people so we are learning similar things

I agree with you and would also like to add that for example in my country when it comes to english we focus primarily on British English and look at UK. Even then it is a rather shallow picture of the real UK I assume. It is also hard for foreigners to understand as in some cases you won't find a clear answer what to do and many take the word of their black friends over what the majority of the community says. It is very complicated tbh.

I'd also add different cultures. Different cultures lead to different mindsets. For example, in my country racism is obviously seen as a problem which is why there is much discussion about re-writing books or using right vocabulary. What isn't there through is the concept of cultural appropriation because many people see it as reverse racism due to my country's history in which everything that wasn't typically German was supposed to be "cleaned away". A world without "cultural appropriation" (it is typically seen as cultural appreciation even by the foreigners) is typically seen as "wet Nazi-Dream".

Yep, I'm sorry but it reaches certain point where it feels like americans think they are the center of the universe and that all of us non-americans have to follow what is racist *in USA*, or that we all have to know their history. Do they know our history? Do they know how many times out culture has been erased from the history? Or what could offend us? No, they definitly don't; But they are expecting US to know theirs. For example, certain sub-cultures of gyaru exposed themselves to a hard tan, so they get darker skin. For their culture, is about defy the beauty standards. But americans see this and think "it's blackface", when it's completely not, and they just won't accept that other countries have a different culture and history with black people. The same with Spain, Ecuador and Uruguay customs, it's their culture and they come from a place of admiration, why would they need to change their culture to please USA? Blackface was used to make fun of black people and to make them seem as if they were happy as slaves, so it was used to entertain white people, during performances and on circus.

How is it offensive when they dance in the way they feel most comfortable? Why do fans want them to change their dance styles for a cover song and call it offensive when they are just vibing to it in their own way? And for the first point I agree wholeheartedly with the video. I still remember how my friends refused to listen to TWICE. They loved BP and the reason was always "They are so cool! But twice is so girlie and cute." And please the way everyone assumes disorders for some idols who are skinny is annoying to me. 2nd point it's bc they are seen as not comfortable enough with their masculinity and disrespecting the original dance like if it was wrong. But you do have a point in that they should do what is comfortable for them, bc they may not even think like that but are just pressured to do like this, so in general it's society fault so maybe not exactly critize them, but not praise them either. And also them they should try to respect the original (unless it's a cover bc covers are supposed to be different mainly) and swallow they pride just like when they do cute things(also bad that they are pressured to but this proves they can do the same), and change their mindset that is not wrong, or refuse to do it and pass to a member that doesn't mind.

@@vanessarl8 To expect a boy who doesn't feel comfortable with doing feminine steps to do it the exact same way while appreciating a great GG song just feels downright illogical to me. Expecting either a boy or a girl to do something feminine or masculine when either are not something they can do comfortably is not right. It can be society pressure because yes there are set rules of how a male or female should act. But it can also be their own limits to how far they are willing to fake it for the audience. And trust me. If they do "swallow their pride" and do it all femininely like expected, then something's gonna look off and everyone's gonna call them out on it. You should check out a video by Mera(a youtuber) it talks about the usage of formula in blackpinks songs. Tbh I don't think we should be focusing on queerbaiting in kpop this much. If you target queerbaiting without first targeting homophobia, you're only gonna harm queer people in the process. Vocal homophobic fans who harass queer fans and queer idols and actually boycott companies over queer content are the big issue we should be fighting against. K-pop fans like to exaggerate how conservative South Korea is and how there is no way anyone can be queer there and therefore anything queer related to their idols is dangerous because it could cause a scandal or whatever. And completely ignoring the lively queer community that exists there and all the openly queer artists with their careers intact. Sure I'm a little bothered by companies exploiting my identity for financial gain while actively discriminating against their queer employees and fans fetishising gay men, but that's not the fight worth fighting rn. Queerbaiting is worth fighting when we have actual representation as an alternative and most queer idols can be out without losing their jobs if they want to. And that's not happening nearly as much as it should.
@TheLordisKnocking
@TheLordisKnocking Год назад
As a fellow queer person, I disagree. We should focus on queerbaiting almost as much as homophobia because queerbaiting is homophobia. Using our identity for their financial gain is disrespectful as hell. We are not products that they can use to fuel the fetishization of us. Fetishizers contribute to us not being normalized and the harm of us, because to them we are seen as an aesthetic, an object, and not actual people. Queerbaiting does as much harm as homophobia because it IS homophobia, just in a different form. Saying that people who fetishize gay people and while actively discriminating against their queer employees and fans fetishising gay men is not a fight worth fighting for, is insane to me. They are using those poor idols as products. We have lesbians being approached in the street and asked to kiss for their own pleasure and when they do not follow suit they get beaten and raped. I would like representation of us being actual people and not just objects for the pleasure of other people. It's not just homophobic fans who harass queer fans/idols. It's fetishizers as well. And also, yes, south korea is a conservative country. just because some queer kpop idols career is still intact doesn't mean all companys would allow that. It is dangerous. it won't just cause a scandal, but also people who will try to harm them as well (mentally or physically.). And not only that. What about queer idols who do not want to come out, yet people love to speak for them. I as a queer person would hate if I didn't want to come out but someone decided to speak for me and tell people how I am queer joke or not. It's disrespectful and crosses boundaries.

I would like to add another one. This one is with dating rumors maybe? So like fans would get mad at people who make articles and stuff about stupid dating rumors and also like saying that some relationships are a scandal. Firstly with the dating rumors, a lot of them are made from speculations from fans thus they are the ones making these stupid rumors. Second, the dating scandal thing. I think the reason why they are called scandals is also because from fans themselves making it such a huge deal and some making a big fuss about it especially delulu fans who think they can marry their idol. And yes of course dating shouldn't be called a scandal, but I feel like it wouldn't be called a scandal in the first place if fans don't make a huge fuss about it.

Yup. Girl crush sells. If it didn't, nugu groups wouldn't default to it as a last ditch effort to become successful. Most companies don't have the wherewithal to keep persevering with an out of the box concept like Dreamcatcher Company has---or the ability to market so heavily outside of the "typical" kpop target audience before redirecting back to that market. (As an Insomnia, I do think the gaming collaborations they did earlier on were *incredibly* savvy because they were able to build a loyal fanbase in that market, which finally paid off during Maison in the home market.) Typically though, girl crush is what sells or companies wouldn't be doing it. Even Twice has been going the girl crush route and I mean...Perfect World is top notch but I still enjoy the cute concept. The experimental music is also selling. The hyperpop makes sense for aespa's concept, but outside of that? I still contend O.O is two separate tracks. The diet culture is a big one. An idol is "too thin"? They get attacked and need to gain weight! An idol actually has larger thighs or a round face? They get attacked and need to lose weight! (Just a couple of weeks ago people were calling a 17 yo a visual hole because she has larger muscular thighs...REALLY????) And yet people hate on the companies for implementing regimes that allow them to give the public the image of the idol that they have said they want. In a twisted sort of way, I almost wonder if part of the reason why companies are so controlling over food and weight is *because* kpop fans will skewer the idols if they trend in either direction...so it sort of protects their artists. The queerbaiting is just...it's obviously targeted to the international market. Queerness is still othered in SK, but companies want those international dollars too. So they keep doing it and international fans keep eating it up. If most of those idols actually came out as queer, companies have been known to rapidly pivot from queerbaiting to terminating contracts. Fans need to stop encouraging it.

i agree with all of this but in some cases of the things you mentioned the fans who co-sign sexualized content, debuting minors or fans who stream bad music or over glorify girl crush are not the same people complaining about those things

I agree with you on almost everything, except for boycotting being of help when companies do not treat/manage idols properly. If an idol gets kicked out and your solution is to boycott/stop supporting the group wouldn't that be worse for the rest of the members? You won't communicate anything effectively that way and it would only end up in the company firing/ mismanaging the rest as well if they get the message that they're not worth the investment anymore. Companies do media impact analysis. That's why they know people lose their shit when someone shows his abs, or that shipping sells. I'm sure they are aware on however fans and public in general reacts to an idol being kicked out. Trending on tt is not effective most of the time because it only reaches international fans. Many issues that are "viral" in the kpop international community don't even reach the local public. But when the reaction on sns is from knetzs then the companies do care and act in consequence. That's really the issue in my opinion.

I love your channel bc you talk about things I actually never thought about, you do your research and is not biased, I really liked this video, I used to be one of those who blamed the companies for literally everything but your points made me change my mind. I never refer to myself as a "kpop stan" bc I don't agree with kpop stans(At least I don't agree with anything that they say anymore), and I don't wanna be associated with those crazy delusional weirdos When it comes to fanfiction.. Idk I don't think we should judge ALL people who likes writing fanfiction, at least in my opinion there are good well written fanfiction that I don't believe is harmful, but the majority I don't like and I just want it off the internet..

It is so weird because a lot of kpop stans are very selective abt what is sexual and what isn't. One group is being pitied for being oversexualized while another group is being praised. And these fans will never admit it. Another thing is kpop companies debut kids because once these idols turn 25 then they're called old and should retire. People see kpop as childish, they associate it with kids. Which is why more and more kids are debuting.

This is so true! I am in a Stray Kids Group on Facebook. And one person posted a question in the group asking Why did WooJin leave Stray Kids ? I responded by I believe we will never know why WooJin left Stray Kids & it’s between JYP, Stray Kids, & WooJin. And it’s none of our business to discuss & people need to move past this & I said let’s support Stray Kids as 8 & WooJin as a solo artist.

Okay so as a bisexual man I can 100 % say queer baiting isn’t real. We can truly never know anyones real sexuality because people aren’t fictional characters, However I do believe the idea of being queer is definitely being Fetishized by Kpop fans.
@luisab3079
@luisab3079 2 года назад
I've been thinking about the question of whether or not the concept of queerbaiting can be applied in a K-pop context for a while already. On one hand the term by definition is about marketing strategies for fictional media, not about real people. Real people acting in ways that could imply they're queer without coming out is not queerbaiting. On the other hand, the way K-pop idols are marketed by companies can be rather similar, and in a way one could argue that the marketed persona of an idol is akin to a fictional character. Especially when it comes to what is portrayed in MVs, I can see the argument made that the term queerbaiting could apply here as well. Fans absolutely shouldn't treat idols as fictional characters though, and I absolutely agree that the way queerness seems to be fetishized by K-pop fans is very uncomfortable.
@manuela.a.l.m
@manuela.a.l.m 2 года назад
I kind of agree with you on that, "queerbaiting" was a term created for fiction and it makes a lot more sense when used for that purpose, but yes Fans and companies treat sexuality almost like a product, the best term I can think of for it it's maybe pink money but i'm not really sure about it
@My_ult_is_Jihyo

I mean queerbaiting exists in some music videos (like in the monster by irene and seulgi)
@luisab3079
@luisab3079 2 года назад
@@My_ult_is_Jihyo Is it really queerbaiting though? Were the fans promised queer representation by the marketing beforehand that the end product then didn't deliver on? There are allusions to queerness without being explicit in the MV, but I can't remember any of the marketing surrounding that release promising explicit queerness to string fans along, so I personally would categorise that MV as having queer subtext, not as queerbaiting. Works of fiction having queer subtext is not the same as queerbaiting, that term refers to a specific marketing strategy. Tbh, to me the alluded queerness in 'Monster' seemed more of the "ooooh isn't the thought of two hot women kissing each other sexy and naughty" kind to go with the "sexy bad girl" concept, which while it's own can of worms, not necessarily queerbaiting. Sorry for the long reply, this is a topic that I have a lot of thoughts on and like to discuss. :'D

i have nothing to say about this video because you ate it up, everything you said is just the truth many people don't wanna see. like people complain about the bad music that is released but here they are streaming it because like that's all kpop stans do these days without even thinking what message that says to the companies. also the whole shipping stuff i'm always creeped out when people ship idols like they are some dolls people play with. is so creepy and weird like i want people to stop doing that crap like what happened to friendship? can't two people of the same or opposite gender be really close friends? they do a little skinship and everyone saying they are in love like no, they just good friends. the least they think about is dating their coworkers please. anyways everything you said is just so good it left me speechless while watching.
