Sm is not only mismanaging Chinese idols they are mismanaging almost all of their foreign idols except mark. Actually not even mark because they are overworking that poor guy. 😭

Seventeen's own families had to club together to buy them in-ear monitors because Pledis wouldn't supply them. Seventeen have really survived against all odds, thanks to the fact that the group members are able to do so much for the group.

I'm worried about Ningning right now. It looks like she's going to be the next Chinese idol to be horribly managed and neglected by SM. She's already getting tons of hate from the nationalism and racism in Korea and the company is basically doing jack shit to protect her. She's only 19 years old and having to deal with all this.

Pledis only started managing Seventeen decently AFTER they got famous. Back in the days the members managed themselves to get anything done. For example Seungkwan used to call shows and broadcasting channels and begged them for interviews and time slots to perform instead of the actual managers doing their job. I also believe Going Seventeen is only so big cause the members put all their time, sweat and blood into it and even hired an outside team.

HEAVY ON JYPE VOCAL TRAINING Seungmin went out of the company, looked for a vocal coach, payed for it himself and then took I.N with him because he was not satisfied with the vocal training there.

Not to mention SM's treatment of Ten..Dude is Thai yet they send him to China, Dude is the best dancer in NCT and the take MONTHS getting him to do anything with dance.

Well HYBE's obsession with money has reached therapy level of unhealthy obsession.

THANK YOU for mentioning the control HYBE has over BTS. Armies are always like "They aren't controlled by the company! They're completely free with everything they're doing!" Girl they are MILKING BTS for all the money and power they can get. I mean, how can you deny this when they are doing everything with BTS? Popular music singles that will top no matter what, a webtoon their fans will read no matter what, literal products that have nothing to do with music, NFTs. With BTS being cultural ambassadors of Korea and standing with the UN with stuff like helping the environment, having NFTs goes against what they stand for. So... Why are they a part of this? Because HYBE has control over them.

TBH. Both YG and CUBE are terrible at making albums. The fact that the only groups that seem to have survived and put out normal amounts of music, are the ones carried by idol producers, speaks VOLUMES.

For Cube, I believe their original founders knew what they were doing as Beast, 4Minute and Hyuna were insanely popular and competed head to head with big3 groups. After they left around CLC's debut, those that took over clearly didn't and still don't have a fucking clue on how to bring their insanely talented groups the success they deserve

About the training in JYPE, it's pretty clear if you see Twice, for example. Some members just recently switched their singing technique, and you can hear their improvement, during their last concerts, for example, and their individual covers. But they're six years into their careers, they should've been good since they debuted!!!

It still baffles me how Pledis had Pristin, an amazing group that even won Rookie of the Year, then disbanded them after two releases and a subunit. As for Cube, they need to be out of business, ASAP👏🏾👏🏾

I can't agree with you more, Cheryl. Cube is the worst kpop company ever imo, they have such talented groups like (G)I-dle or Pentagon that aren't only good idols they make good music because Cube doesn't even help them. In terms of promotion they also suck, they never made good promotions for CLC and BtoB who are also very good groups and deserved better. And finally, in terms of idol and scandals management... I have literally no words.

About SM, I remember in 2007 when Super Junior were promoting don't don, one of the members (Heechul) literally coughed up blood from overworking and the staff didn't do anything about it, and the worst part is that they were making a comeback after they had a pretty bad accident, I'm not suprised that Lee Sooman gave them their own label.

I'm ashamed that I thought Jellyfish ent. was actually a good company before. They looked so good when there was only VIXX but later everyone found out that was because VIXX were managing themselves. Members produced for themselves, promoted themselves and protected from scandals for years but in the smallest scandal jelpi failed at protecting their arguably biggest money maker group. I'm not even talking about gugudan and verivery because jelpi just proved they suck at managing groups

I personally believe that Seventeen doing as well as they are right now is because the members handle a vast majority of their organization themselves.

CUBE can't do anything right. I honestly believe from all the behind-the-scene stuff I've seen and read that the ONLY reason I-DLE is successful is because Soyeon is making all the decisions and she (and her team) are doing all the leg work to get things going. CUBE themselves don't do anything but stand out of her way...and thank God for that. CUBE can't even stand up for their #1 money makers (Hyuna at one point, now Soojin) and would rather throw away money than "look bad". CUBE will put all their effort into a new girl group when they have an already existing one that they aren't doing ANYTHING with that already has a fanbase. Not only will they not support their own groups, but they treat those within it so bad that they leave. Sorn, Elkie, and Yujin (to an extent) are gone... meaning so is CLC. No announcement; no care. No shade on Lightsum, but when the behind-the-scenes footage for Vanilla came out, you can tell these girls were pushed up the line before they were ready. They had the talent, but were clearly scared and overwhelmed. It's remarkable they've cooped as well as they have last year and I really hope someone within their crew is a "Soyeon". In summery, if CUBE have to get off their asses to do anything, it's too much.

Cube was decent when its founder was still CEO. Then he fell ill, and had to leave the reins to other people who basically didn't know what they were doing, and as time went things became worse and worse.

One other thing that I don't like about HYBE as that all groups that don't have separate control (ie Pledis, Source groups) are made to utilize the same extreme amount of autotune and vocal effects in their music. Listen to pretty much any recent BTS, TXT, and Enhypen song and they low-key sound like robots (with different variations). And with SM it seems like they now forbid live singing because they are so focused on having perfect singers. I just want to hear a genuine voice from both of these companies please!

Jessica literally talked about how sm treated them and said many things about sm but ppl still believe that " sm best family shit" she said Idols being treated as machines, being forced into contracts and how sm don't see them as real ppl but a money maker how and how they use female idols to promote male idols and many other things, like 2 idols from their ending their lives says enough about sm.

What I hate the most about p nation is what they have done with hyunas music , like cube sucks but they knew what to do with hyuna , her voice and the type of sound that fit her , with p Nation, it's like they don't know what sound she would fit best and are just giving her random noise , yes the first comeback under p nation was good , but now it's going down hill music wise , I don't know whether she produces the songs herself or not , but they need to hire whoever produced her music in cube

Once I accepted that all kpop companies really don't care about their artist or their artist fans, I actually started enjoying kpop more. No supporting one group or one company. If I don't like a comback, I don't feel the pressure to waste my time or money buying that album or streaming songs because of company or idol loyalty.

If Seventeen did not have as much of a major role in taking part of their music I'm 100% convinced that they would've been radio silence or disbanded a long time ago as well as Nu'est had it not been for Produce 101. It's a complete mess with every act they have.

So freaking true. People always talk about hybe like it's the best company but like the amount of greed those men have is insane. One thing is that they might have some of the best artists, or concepts, or creative teams which I do agree but that's on their employees. Another completely different thing is defending them from a business point of view. It's clear they only want to make money, tbh they would have never gotten that big if they didn't have that mentality to begin with, not to mention they value and gave a role into their company to people like Scooter Braun, that should give you an idea on their business ethics lol. I think they are also milking txt in a way even if not in the same level of course. The fact that they haven't had a proper break like longer than one week since they debuted is already alarming. As for jyp I also agree with you a lot. A lot of people say they suck for many reasons but they never mention training which I think it's one of the most obvious. You can see how much some idols on other groups improve in many areas or start taking on things like composition or producing after debut but that's something you hardly ever see on jyp idols and I think it's cause they lack that support system like having an actual coach/teacher on that area instead of relying on their fellow members for help. I'm not saying they do not improve with practice or personal investment but I mean having an actual technical development such as vocally. It's outstanding to see how much better Woojin's vocal skills are now that he's a soloist and that's a learning process he clearly did after leaving jyp, for example.

I just wish BTS could release a regular album, like love yourself or mots 7 and just express themselves and do what they want instead of releasing butter's 50th remix because HYBE wants money from the west

I feel bad for Pledis groups actually, when their groups debuted they manage to get so much hype but for some reason Pledis can’t help them keep their momentum, example Nu’est debut being SO HUGE then suddenly becoming a nugu group for the next 5 years because Pledis decided to ship them away to Japan along with After School. IDK if Pledis ever promoted Bumzu because I know he signed as a singer, but he probably makes a ton of money for working with all Seventeen and Nu’est songs.

As far as SM not giving a shit about the artists well-being, back in the day, Leeteuk and Yoona and some other idols under SM basically created a depression support group. This was publicly known (iirc, Leeteuk blogged about it). That should’ve been a wake up call that “Hey some of these young people under our company need serious help and support. Maybe we should give a shit about their well-being.” But this is SM we’re talking about, so no, they actively don’t care if their artists are suffering.

Something I want to mention: SM is bad at managing their idols, but we don't know how they handle mental health. Having depression (or any mental illness) can have many reasons and isn't easy to treat at all. Companies can't prevent their idols from being mentally unwell in a grand scheme of things. While they can certainly do better in terms of treatment, sulli and jonghyun battled with many other problems. Even going to therapy and taking medications (while mostly being a big help) can't magically help idols out of situations like these. We should never blame a company for these things, because this issue is so much bigger and more complicated than that.

God the frustration of having exo and red velvet as your ultimate groups and having to go throught despair of all this mismanagement has been so tiring. Aside from a huge problem was also their abuse of member's health and lack of protection(the amount of Vile shit that knetz continue to drop on Chen for having a family is ridiculous)

I have a theory that Cube would be fine if they only had to manage one girl group and one boy group. I feel like the timelines between their girl groups disbanding/going to shit and them getting ready to debut a new gg show that they are just totally incompetent.

I would love if kpop stans weren't so certain that they know everything about Jonghyun... We know he was receiving treatment. That's all we know, because the rest is not our business. We also know that deep depression is one of the most fatal conditions there is. People who treat people suffering from it say that in many cases, even if you do everything you could, you can't save the person. They compare it to treating cancer - there will be people who won't make it, not because anybody did anything wrong, but because the disease is that brutal and dangerous. And blaming people around the person who took their own life is just cruel. You are basically blaming people who knew him for years, who worked with him, who he was often friends with, for not helping him, while not knowing even 10% of the story. It is just cruel. Imagine that your friend or coworker takes their own life and everyone just blames you because you were next to them and assumes that you did nothing. And everyone has their own story. An idol is a person with their past, their private life, their traumas. We don't know so many things about them, but we should remember that their life is not only about their career. We don't know what were the roots of Jonghyun's depression. We can only guess that they reached deep into his soul and were much more complicated that what we know about him. It is irresponsible and immature to play a blame game, pointing fingers at people who were close to him, who worked with him, and who must have been traumatised by his death much more than fans who never met him. Think about their feelings for once.

Now I kind of want to see your take on rbw and happyface ent. The latter company is interesting to me because their mismanagement of groups is just amazingingly breathtaking.

SM is so fucking ridiculous. Where is the profit incentive in shooting yourself in the foot by allowing scandals to derail you completely? Think of all the money they've lost in having to re-schedule releases or rush production. It's insane. When they bring producers from California, they need to also pick up a couple of PR people. Someone who doesn't know anything about Korea could still do a better job handling scandals. It seems they only use their legal departments over contract disputes and setting up LLCs to launder money. SM acts like they're a small mom & pop shop when they can't juggle promoting all their groups well. They have a considerable presence in Japan and South East Asia to be able to have groups promoting simultaneously in different countries without having their groups competing with each other. The one bare minimum change that seems to have been implemented is more humane treatment of their idols. Not saying that it's great. As a 2nd gen fan, it's clear that they're taking physical injuries more seriously than before. They seem to send their idols for physicals often especially before comebacks. Injured idols have been able to rest and take time off. Idols who've struggled with anxiety or other mental health issues have been able to access therapy and time off. We still don't know how easy or encouraged it is, but it's progress. We should also remember that mistreating mental health isn't just an SM or industry problem but a societal problem in Korea. Mental health is taboo to varying degrees all over the world, but it's especially not talked about or ignored in Korea. Jonghyun saw many therapists and doctors who basically told him that he had no reason to be sad and to just cheer up. The medical field also failed him. I've had my share of shitty therapists in America and Britain as well. It's only pharmaceutical companies drive for big profits that make anti-depressants easy to get in America, even if you don't need them which can also be dangerous. I just want to re-iterate that SM is trash whose only saving grace is their training system and commitment to high quality music production. It's just as evil and exploitative as any company. I'm not defending it. I just wanted to say that at least some progress has been made in labour conditions. Idols should unionise. Support workers. (also that's another thing we miss, korea has trash labour laws and it was even worse in the 2000s and that's why a lot of the shit sm did was even considered normal, like chinese migrant workers HAD to be paid less than the korean equivalent???)

Correct unfortunately these companies only care about the image reputation and the profits these idols bring to them instead of treating them as human beings whose mental health should come first and also protecting the idols and artists from misinformation false statements and remarks being spread by toxic K-pop Stan and fandoms especially on social media like Twitter

I think bighit manages txt well compared to other companies but the fact that they control the songs and concepts without txt input is so upsetting like the members obviously dont like long title songs but they keep giving them that!!! i'm glad pledis didn't ship svt to other country after they debut (they probably learnt their lesson from what happen to nu'est & afterschool after sending them to japan) svt actually got the western interest during their debut(their debut album became the longest-charting K-pop album of the year in the US) but pledis focus on korean promotion first. After having a solid korean fanbase, they focus on solidifying their japanese fanbase which was a great success (happy ending staying on oricon chart for 100 weeks). And now, they're trying to promote to the western but they still need to up their effort in western promoting

I agree with you about the control HYBE have over BTS. I felt very weird about that time they cried at an awards show. They said it was because they discussed disbanding, but no grown men are going to be breaking their hearts over discussing their business options, especially when they didn't do it. V was inconsolable, crying his heart out. Something went down behind closed doors - maybe during contract negotiations - that really upset them. We probably won't ever find out though. I hope they are happier now.

I really don’t understand why JYPE vocals are hated on so much when they’re better than, say, YGE for example. NaJeongJi are a really strong 3rd gen vocal line, NMixx have an insane vocal line, Itzy are stable as hell when dancing, and Skz is an average group for boy group standards. Yes Twice have shown themselves unstable live, but that’s because of overworking not lack of skills. Yes Itzy don’t have a particularly impressive vocalist, but their stability while dancing is unmatched by anyone. JYPE doesn’t have issues with training male rappers (Changbin, Han), but I agree on the female rappers that they just don’t train those at all. Honestly JYPE is actually becoming underrated in terms of vocals. Kinda surprising.

i think one of the things that should be addressed is how badly managed wayv are compared to other nct units. during their debut, they were given only a "recycled" song that was originally from nct 127 and wasn't even acknowledged as part of the nct brand until resonance era. heck they weren't even allowed to mention one another back then?? 2021 was also a hell year for the boys considering what happened with lucas and now their last cb turned one year just this month which was the last time all 7 members were together. we weren't given any solid announcements on when they will return as a group even when they were hinting for a cb since LAST year. and now don't even get me started how one of the members once mentioned how there are only less than 20 staff managing them !!

As SM Stan(Fan of most of their groups), SM truly sucks. Yeah music,concept and story line is really good and creative BUT thay really don't know how to treat idols, some of their idols are overworked(Mark)and some of them really don't have enough work. Also about scandels Do I need to explain? Just look at Lucas station or Chanyeol station, Also protect them from freaking stalkers like I feel so bad for young ones. I have only 2 things with people saying TWICE is overworked 1. They are overworked in some extent, but the proof that some of y'all bring up are ridiculous For example, Doughnut released after Scientist for two week, which is very common because TWICE released Korean TT and then they will released Japanese TT for a week or two apart for a while now. And people in the news post were shock for some reason. The most stupid part was that there were many comment thinking that TWICE shoot MV, record music, learn the choreography, film the special stage in just 2 week after the end of the promotion of Scientist. Like pls use your common sense. How tf would they do that. And when I tell them to use their comment sense, I got attack for "supporting" the overworked of TWICE 2. How screaming "TWICE IS OVERWORKED, LET THEM REST" in news post gonna make JYPe stop overworked TWICE. How tf would they know that. If you want them to know then at least email it to them. And don't use the pharse "How do you know they did not email to JYP?" well I just say it for someone who didn't email it to JYPe. If you do it, then congrats.

cube ent is the result of upper management not being a part of the music industry. like i think more than 30% of the company and abt 80% of top level management is commandeered by a fcking holdings company/parent company to a cosmetics label. i will say the only thing cube is good at is scouting talent but what's the damn point if everything else isn't done to service the talent? also, the fact that their idols don't even own the masters to their own songs is criminal (it's also the main reason why the whole 'gidle leave cube' is rather unrealistic bc all the royalties the girls would've been making off their music would be cut off if they leave and/or they'd have to engage in a very expensive lawsuit to gain back their masters). it's just such a shithole company i can't. also, top media should do what stayc's company does/fetus bh used to do since they clearly dont have industry connections to promote their groups anywhere meaningful. CREATE CONTENT THAT FANS WANT!! let them cover kpop groups, film more of the behind process of them preparing for comebacks, take any gig no matter how small!!

Unpopular opinion: Teddy is overheated producer in Kpop community. 1) Sure, he's not versatile as a producer but he's hit maker (most of his songs are really catchy) hits=money 2) He isn't responsible for one Blackpink comeback per year, I'm sure that they have over 100 songs that are just released when YGE decides. 3) He's also producer for Somi but Somi also writes and composes songs on her own, also BigBang and 2NE1 were involved in their music process as well at some point, that's why I don't hear people trashing on Teddy when it comes to them. 🤷‍♀️ Blackpink needs to get more involved too, cause it's obvious they can (Gone, Lovesick girls, On the ground, Solo, Stay, verses of their covers etc) and then their music will get better and people would stop hating on Teddy. It's obvious they trust Teddy if he mostly writes and produce their music. It's honestly way easier to trash Teddy's production and lyrics on Lalisa and not critize Lisa for not being involved in making process musically. I said what I said, and I love BP girls with my whole heart.

SM has had so many lawsuits, including TVXQ's former members who now promote as JYJ (or until now). But with the Chinese idols thing, they literally are doing this Chinese idol mistreatment since Super Junior debuted. Heck I'm still surprised Zhou Mi is still under SM... Cube never properly managed 4Minute, as they only cared about Hyuna. Everyone you asked about 4Minute had Hyuna as their bias and didn't care about any other member. The CLC situation is just as bad, they were also screwed over. As for Jellyfish, they literally let VIXX fall apart now. 2 members gone and Jellyfish just let them swim. Gugudan deserved better for sure, I wasn't even a fan FYI.

cube entertainment is so weird because they only allow certain groups in their company to write their own music, for example ex clc member sorn has recently said in a twitter space that the members (clc) weren’t able to try and produce their own songs simply because blue box company didn’t let them 😐

it's funny how cube basically requires a producer in each group to guarantee comebacks but at the same time won't provide production software to the artists. bare minimum stuff.

I remember hankyung talking about how he was getting a drip and then their manager asked him to hurry, so they adjust the speed of IV drip to the max. Which can be deadly . And then he had to go to an award ceremony right away. This is only one incident that completely shows that sm has never cared about their foreign artists.

For me JELLYFISH ENTERTAINMENT is one of THE WORST companies in K-Pop. I used to like them for allowing Hongbin to stream and also for them allowing VIXX be a bit more open and offensive as characters instead of being bland perfect dolls. But there are so many things that don't sit right with me, I'll list the things that come to my mind, I know there are far more: I. VIXX' treatment during their hiatus: As a starlight, I'm the most pissed about this one, so this will be a bit longer, but JELLYFISH, WHAT IN JYP's FISH TANK ARE YOU DOING!?!? First of all, they don't promote the solo projects of the members at all, they are not giving any subtitles under VIXX TV, nor are they giving any activity to VIXX at all even tho none of the members are currently in the military. Also what they did with Hongbin: He was the most underpromoted member during the hiatus. The only activity he had was Cool Love, a joint Pepsi promotion with Hyungwon. He talked about struggling privately on his streams, and yet, when the Drunk Stream Controversy happened JELLYFISH DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING against the spead of false rumors, insults being thrown as him as well as threats, even death threats. Instead, they put him in a hiatus from the beginning of march until August, but as JELLYFISH had done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING against the Anti-Hongbin-Bandwagon he recieved immense backlash when he announced his return. The result was him leaving the group just days after, alledgedly on his own, but I don't believe that. The whole situation was VERYVERY JellyFISHy as he had renewed his contract and clearly wanted to continue with VIXX just a few months before. II. GUGUDAN - Do I have to say more? III. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT - VIXX' HYUK constantly jokes about JELLYFISH ENTERTAINMENT being broke. How they manage that is the question, I mean VERIVERY's sales are growing in huge steps - their most recent album sold 80.000 copies, what the fish are they doing with the revenue of those sales? It also can't be debts as VIXX sales were always high and Gugudan still sold at least SOMETHING.

Don’t get me wrong , I guess YG should be judged beyond “BLACKPINK “. There are many other popular groups under YG, leaving out the late comebacks , none of them are currently involved with Teddy . Maximum of them curate their own music , plus other YG producers . Just a thought , don’t get me wrong . Would love to listen to your take taking into account all the other YG artists as well .

Tbh I was very surprised that BTS themselves allowed their discography to go that south, like there’s nothing wrong with changing style like back in DNA era, but now the music is just not as good as they used to be, and considering they used make majority of their stuff themselves, idk how they are not threatened with money or something to release these songs under their name

I'm not sure how true this is but I read somewhere that apparently Wonwoo was supposed to be cast for playing the lead in 'My ID is Gangnam Beauty' but at that time Pledis did not allow SVT to partake in individual projects. Looking at the popularity of the show, it would've been such a great opportunity for expanding their fanbase. Honestly, I think Seventeen is in such a highly regarded position because of how dedicated the members have been towards the group. They truly are self-made - production, choreography, variety show presence - all handled by the members. It's wonderful to see their growth.
