@@lushfruitWell that takes forever as there are thousands of temples in Tokyo itself, even the „main“ ones are in the hundreds. Also as soon as you‘ve seen 3-4 temples, it gets boring. They all look more or less the same. So I understand why he‘s ignoring you comments.
American here. Kids here love Hershey's, especially for Valentine's Day, Easter, and Halloween. Adults generally like them on S'mores, but that's about it. For me as an adult, it's garbage-worthy chocolate. Then again, I don't represent all Americans.
I might be wrong and are too lazy to check. But i seem to remember getting told that one of the reasons alcohol is so cheap in japan is most countries got a lot higher alcohol taxes than japan.
You can usually find decent supermarkets or food stores at train stations or in most department stores (not just the big ones, but smaller chain ones like Aeon, Seiyu, Tokyu, etc). The food selection at least is way superior to konbinis. And if you want quality food content, go raid the big department store basement floors with their food markets in Shinjuku (like Isetan or Takashimaya), there you can go full gourmet (and maybe find more gluten-free food for the babysitter?). By the way, probably the most expensive market I saw in Tokyo was the Azabudai Hills Market.
I'll never forget wandering around Shibuya Station and finding the Food Show and the MASSIVE GOURMET LOOKING grocery store that was right next to the sit-in shops. Mudan really needs to wander around some of the larger stations
Inageya, Life, Seiyu... just a few supermarkets that have bigger locations and aren't just the size of a My Basket or AEON Malls. And there is definitely more to see in Nara - it's just not at the deer park. There are a bunch of huge temples/shrines half an hour outside of the main attraction point of Nara.
Love these monthly look-backs of the content~! Going through each video and reading some comments is a great way to learn more about how you'll present things in the future, and can also give some handy tips to other YuuTuubaas. Thanks, fella~! What sorts of wacky things will Mudan get up to tomorrow?
I can only speak for adachi-ku but there are supermarkets with various budget ranges all over the place. I've got a seiyu nearby which is nice because they're also open 24/7. And yeah, my basket is just a fancier konbini
I think Tokyo has lots of great coffee options (especially with every conbini having those auto grinding machines), but no one place is the master of every style. For instance if you like flat white styles, hunt down specifically an Australian or New Zealand coffee spot.
Nearly 3 months (79 days) of asking Mudan to speedrun nearly every main temple in Tokyo!! Will be looking forward next month 35:17 , if not Im coming for you in July and August.
Hey Mudan, When I went to Japan I mostly visited Osaka and the surrounding area and would suggest the following places to visit if you're in neighbourhood: 1: Koyasan - temple mountain It was pretty cool to see all those temples so close together + the route to get there without a car. Taking the cable car and a bus ride to get there made all the temples there a cool experience altogether. As a bonus you could take a short trip through bear territory with some of the walking paths around there (didn't see any myself). 2. Himeji Castle _ one of the oldest castles still standing in Japan. 3_ Breakfast cafes (not sure it that's how they're called) : when ordering a coffee you also get a breakfast including half a banana (thought it was pretty odd, putt pretty good all in all.)
Honestly I've always loved your sense of humour when editing videos and watching your daily vlogs I've come to appreciate you even more! Thank you for showing us all your year
I do like these videos quite a lot, is informative in a way that doesn''t feel overloaded. The bait and switch comments are the best and sad that Mudan cut them out or started to dodge them. As for the end, I wonder if he will have 12 cameras at the end of the year, plus which one will be his PoV's PoV camera.
Always looking forward to your daily uploads! It is a joy watching and listening to what you are experiencing. It became an important part of my nightly routine haha. I think it is impressive how you are able to keep up on your schedule. How do you do it?! What's your secret ingredient? It inspires me to keep on working on my own art and projects. Thank you so much for sharing this content with your viewers!
No one cares but I think the reason Hershey's is such a big seller in the USA is this. Their chocolate is like American cheese, it's heavily processes bullshit that has its uses (kid's candy, good for smores, etc.) and most of their sales are likely on chocolate sauce and choccy milk powder, which is used in industrial sizes in restaurants etc. It's a staple brand, but not as an adult human chocolate bar... not since they switched to plastic packaging a decade or more ago.
For those in this chat who might look for real estate in Japan in the future, it is recommended to consider the proximity of your room to the train station, convenience store, and supermarket. These are important points that influence the price of real estate. In the center of Tokyo, I predict there are places where there are convenience stores nearby, but no large and reasonably priced supermarkets.
When I was in Japan with my dad in 2019 we booked that capsule hotel in the heart of Tokyo you said was 60$. We booked it same day for like 30 total I think the price increase is due to the social media fame
Wooo another epic update vlog! Please go to Cafe LA next time you’re in Osaka! Couple mins walk from Ben’s Cookies in Shinsaibashi. Also Mudan sorry to tell you but Melbourne Australia definitely has the best coffee. Come here some time :) Perhaps for the next DreamHack
I would advise Daikoku PA on a Friday evening if you wanted to go to a car meet, you have to go and leave by car with it being a PA (this is very important don't try walk or taxi there) but Friday evenings between like 6pm-9pm is when most the Japanese (JDM) style car owners go. Police typically move people on out of the PA after 8/9ish depending on how busy it gets.
That's such an interesting take about Osaka and Tokyo. Osaka is usually more Laid back than Tokyo. I can confirm this because I was there to experience it. I think you based your opinion on Dotonbori. I may need to book a trip back there to compare. Also maybe because EVERYONE is going to Japan.
If you can it would be cool to see how you balance editing for all the youtube channels you edit for and manage having free time to go out. like a normal day in the life kind of thing
The prices they re referring to is probably in December or during peak summer season. The prices were three times as high when I traveled in March/April vs Nov/Dec
Weird. I stayed in central Tokyo in a residential area for 1 month (Iidabashi/Kagurazaka stations): - There were 5 supermarkets in the area I’ve been to - They have great pre-arranged food that is easy and quick to cook in Japanese tiny kitchens (not so tiny if you’ve lived in other Asian countries).
My favorite were “Inageya いなげや飯田橋店” and “Maruetsu マルエツ 江戸川橋店”. They were also the biggest in the area, the closer to the main stations/business/trading streets the smaller they were.
If you have any chance to visit Osaka again, please try to visit one of supermarket branch called Tamade (玉出) They're known for crazy cheap pricing and very unique aesthetics.
Video idea: there’s a new-ish unmanned conbini / small store at the Takanawa Gateway station in Tokyo similar to the Amazon-store concept, I think it might make a cool video! The store is called TOUCH TO GO
Grocery stores in Japan are fine, would recommend going to somewhere like LIFE, Seiyu, or Tokyu. Places like My Basket are basically just slightly upgraded konbini, something more akin to a corner store. Has all the basics, but that's about it, while places like LIFE are more similar to a proper grocery store.
For WEEB videos: The gunpla thing if you get a 1/144 one you can probably make it in 1-2 hours. Guy buy simple cutter and some simple sanding files. If you are stressed out and need some time to chill down its a good way to slow things down and chill a bit. There are also some Pokemon plastic models which are like 10 pieces in total and could take you about 20 minutes tops if you dont want to spend a whole hour in it. Gunpla is pretty big not only in JP but all over the world. I guess its one of those "WEEB" things you can do in case you run out of ideas for a video. You can also buy the kits anywhere like Yodobashi or Lashingbang. Hell you can just spend 1 video buying a kit and another one just building and talking about it. That's 2 "WEEB" videos for the price of one.
From what I saw when I went, Aeon and My Basket don't always have better selections depending on what you're looking for, but the prices will be a bit cheaper. Maybe like 110 instead of 150 for gummies
Idea for summer. Collect icecream or ice cream equivalent. Grocery stores appear to have seasonal flavours versus conbinis. Invite people over to have an icecream tasting session so they have to travel in the heat and not you 😂
You should visit Kanazawa! I reccomend buying the one day pass for rental bikes (machi nori) and riding around kanazawa. The port, kenrokuen garden, the castle, and when you're done you can get some decent food in Korinbo.
hi "mudan" thank you for the recap and all I appreciate you taking the effort to replace the original one I only have one question where did you hide the body
30:33 Regarding the shortening numbers thing, most people stop using it once you break into 10,000 and above because it confuses people and our public education system is on average not the best, so large swaths of us can barely add two numbers together much less anything else. And usually it's for the more in between numbers, like 4,500 being forty-five hundred or 2,300 being twenty-three hundred.
theres a lot of non konbini supermarket/grocery stores but they can range greatly in size and price range. the names/brands just arent very obvious and maybe even weird. mybasket is pretty small and just a tad bigger than a kobini, seijo ishii has a slightly bigger selection than mybasket, niku no hanamasa is yet again a bit bigger, but then theres Life with even bigger selection and has a few foreign products and actually sells slices of gouda cheese for example which u are unlikely to find in some of the smaller stores that only sell fake processed cheese. bread selection also goes up with each... be forewarned that most western ish products are relatively expensive...
Mudan what do you recommend to do in Tokyo during the rainy season? (Like June) I’m thinking of visiting then but I’m unsure what things would be tolerable with the rain broken apart with the blistering summer heat.
There is a meme image that went viral in Japan that rates supermarkets by region, store size, price, etc. Let's go through all of them and see the differences.
How about checking out an old Japanese bowling alley? Don't know if you really like bowling but it's an inside thing that you and potentially some friends can do in the summer.
I was lucky. My hotel was on outskirts of Tokyo. A Family Mart connected to hotel. And a grocery store a short walk away for the residents of that area! Yeah in Tokyo grocery stores far and few between. BTW FM coffee is good too!
HEYY MUDAN NOTICED ME WOOO !!! - Btw Mudan , i just wanna say that ever since you started this vlog series, it inspires me to do eome vlogs and post anywhere on socmed (im not extroverted either) but it's really fun to make memories of the place you're going anf share the experience with people
manga is actually pretty good for learning japanese. it's just pictures and dialogue so it's generally not too hard to understand. it also usually has furigana (hiragana pronunciations next to the kanji) which are good for beginners
Have you checked out NUI in Kuramae yet? Got a great bar with cocktails, Kazu (The owner, say hi to him from Dennis) makes his own infused Gin with sansho peppers. The also have a bar menu and make a killer Croque Madame
1100 yen is definitely not 70 dollars (as of May 2024). And instead of just a bucket seat that shakes from side to side, go to one of the disaster prevention learning centers like the Tokyo Rinkai Disaster Prevention Park.
Mudan 2 shit takes so far: 1. Osaka is the place to go for vibes and amazing food, you just need to stir away from the touristy spots around Glico. 2. European coffee is amazing, especially if you try the ones in South. There is a highly skilled barista in each corner of the street. For example Italy (obviously) with their espresso based ones, Greece with their interesting variation of cold Espresso, the Greek (also known as Turkish) coffee and something called Frappe.
You will go into Kanji eventually. It is the natural order of things. Katakana and Hiragana are learned concurrently, then you add the Kanji symbols you need (menus, road signs, etc.), then you learn the radicals, and build on top of that.
For Japanese, learn the order of the stroke, and your understanding of hiragana with different fonts will be more flexible. There’s cursive in hiragana but if you know the order of strokes you will discern it even if it’s different from your sheet
I visited these super markets before in Japan: Life - Shijo Karasuma in Kyoto, one of the bigger locations I think Life - Fukagawa Sarue in Koto City in Tokyo, HUGGGEEEEE Summit Store East 21 in Koto City in Tokyo. Also huge. I think for Tokyo, you need to go visit the markets in a more residential area and they should be bigger. If you live in a too urban place, of course the markets will be smaller due to space constraints. Also for the 14 hundred thousand, in American English, you usually can only go from small denomination to big denomination once. So you can say 1400 as "Fourteen (Tens) Hundred". This is normally only done with 11-19 + hundred. Otherwise, people here say 1.4 million or 1 million 4 hundred thousand. My family speaks Cantonese Chinese, and I learned some Japanese in College, so we also use the 10,000 system to count just like Japanese. So to say 1 million = one hundred ten thousand, In Japanese that would be Hyaku-Man. 10 million = 1 thousand ten thousand, sen-man. My vocabulary fails me after 10 million.
Lol, only supprised that most coffe shops dodnt open untill 10 am. Its easy to find seet coffe but hit or miss on good smooth black coffee. Side note, couldnt find regular tea sampling house. Onky found euro afternoon tea or boba tea.
Yoo Mudan I recommend Turkish coffee, the coffee beans burned the shit out of them and they grind it. You can find it in a Turkish market places in Japan
If you know someone with a membership, going to a Costco would be pretty hilarious since the Japanese one is pretty similar to the US one from what I've seen (which means it's all huge silly bulk stuff that doesn't make sense for many people).
Crazy how many adventures you've had already! I hope you can successfully complete your tour of the prefectures without rushing through them too much, hehe. Minor side note/fun fact: "crochet cake" had a knit pattern.. Crochet and knit are quite different processes and only one of them can be done with machines! But that cake was freakin' cute either way. Also hersheys is shit. Tastes like chemicals. Recently I recall seeing someone explain that it like, literally contains something that is also present in barf. (I looked it up! Butyric acid!) So.. It can remind some people of that. I am one of those people. Ew. I think we should get rid of hersheys and chocolates like it altogether, but for some people I guess it's all they know and maybe they have sentimental attachments to it? /shrug. I'm a dark chocolate girlie. I'll stick to nicer bars and brands that care about things like the growers and animals (Endangered Species is my fav! Funds for bats and wolves and other cool lil guys!)
Day 29 of asking Mudan to climb Mount Fuji. But first wait for the trails to open again. And I am not that weak. I will never stop!!! Also I love these recaps and the actual real infromation and reviews you give about japan. My ever growing list of places to visit gets bigger nearly every day thanks to you. I love you. Wait what... yeah you know what i mean
Life commenting while watching. Take on supermarkets: eeeh depends on what you call “big supermarket “? I think there’s quite a lot supermarkets with more snack choices and than in combinis in every area of Tokyo? At least where I lived that always used to be the case.
Saw a part where people let you just drink sake near Tokyo tower and idk how to explain, but whenever I’m in Japan there’s always gonna be a case when someone I don’t know gives me free alcohol. Not only in case of, like hitting on me or something, but sometimes people just want to drink with you haha. I know it was not Japanese on your footage, but for some reason accidental free alcohol drinking happens regularly to me in Japan 😂
10:45 Oh I actually know what are you talking about! I stopped in hostel where bunk beds had separate space familiar to capsules but technically it wasn’t a capsule. But you’re right, if we think from privacy perspective capsule is a much a better deal.
