I have a pair of older (and louder) Hoka boots with the eVent liner. With an aerogel insole, they work well enough into single digits F when moving. Much more comfortable than a g-tex sock in my experience. They also manage heat better than a g-tex sock. Hopefully your water won't freeze in those outside pockets, or you may want to consider a sleeve for the Nalgene.

So when it drops below about 30 I'll actually move my bottles inside the pack and put them inside some insulation to keep them from freezing, along with the filter.

I always suggest packing ramen bullion packets instead of bullion cubes, since they are waterproof sealed and cubes aren't. The flat pouch is a bonus space saver, as well, that will tuck in anywhere.
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Год назад
I have never had an issue packing cubes, are you able to get the ramen packets by themselves?

I like to carry 1 oz foil packets of Smooth Skippy Peanut Butter in along with pre-cooked bacon in its own ziplok baggie. Bacon is THE snack by itself or with anything. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada

We always have ramen stocked. So, it's easy to suggest. It's the first thing we taught the kids to make for themselves when they were younger. They didn't always use the packet, so we had extra occasionally.

Nicely done. That down mat must have been a challenge to pack? Anywhoo, It looks like you’re set to cozy up as much as possible in somewhere the cold is. I’ll be heading out next week to overnight temps as low as mid 30’s, hopefully no lower. I’ll be using a HG quilt as well. Not as cozy as your 0*, but I think the overstuffed 20* that I’ll supplement with a STS toaster fleece liner will be enough. The liner Is a bit bulky,but so toasty. Hopefully it will lay flat at the bottom of a 60* GG Blaze 60. Happy trails wherever you’re going.

Thanks for the video. Couple questions would help me if you offer explanation: - how cold will it get? - do you prefer not to have booties or camp shoes? If so, why not? - how do you navigate? - do you have an emergency beacon or something like that? Thanks!
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Год назад
Great questions. The temperatures will be getting down into the teens, and potentially lower at the higher elevations. I normally just loosen up my shoes when I get to camp and go that route, depends on the trip really. I have the maps downloaded onto my phone. The new iPhone has emergency satellite SOS feature, really making the pay service beacons obsolete!

Nice. I liked the Sea to Summit bag liner with my old bag. Makes it feel a bit cozier. Glad the Hoka isn't giving issues. That surprisingly doesn't look like a lot of food for 5-6 days. I haven't gone on many multi-day trips so not sure how much to carry. I guess it gives some peace of mind I could probably pack that much all at once. edit: I was looking into that Tarptent Rainbow. Looks nice. Saw a deal on a NatureHike Tagar 1 which has a similar design. I like that you can convert the Rainbow to a freestanding tent with trekking poles.

It probably looks like less food than you see others lay out since I don't really do much for breakfast. I'll do coffee and then on the trail eat a bar, but I am not a big breakfast guy most of the time.

You made no mention of how much water you'll be carrying. I have to assume you'll have numerous water sources along your adventure & will be using your BeFree Water filter/jug. Be sure to keep the filter from freezing at night. You also made no mention of any GPS or Personal Locator Beacon for that just in case situation. Is there a reason for not including several packs of Hot Hands, chemical foot warmers? I always carry a ziplok baggie full of pre-cooked bacon chunks that I can snack on or add to a Freeze Dried meal - bacon goes with anything or nothing & is a staple on day hikes or overnighters. Peak Refuel is my preferred brand of Freeze Dried meals. Buff Neckware is a MUST have with me item; there are so many different configurations for wearing it & they are all good. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada

I'll just be using the two bottles that I showed in the video. I'll refill them when needed at the various creeks and streams we'll be crossing each day and the ponds/lakes we pass. Unlike the desert it's rare to have a section of trail in this area that doesn't have relatively good water access. I may or may not have some hot hands for the electronics, but I haven't really been needing them lately. As for the GPS/PLB, the new iPhone has a satellite SOS feature, the entire trail we'll be on has cell coverage, and we have the maps downloaded to the phone.

Curious what temp range you are looking at? You say this is for winter, but that filter isn’t meant for winter use and what about water sources? Will you need to break through ice? You also mentioned Bears which hibernate in winter?
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Год назад
Great questions! The temps will get down to the teens, maybe slightly lower at elevation. Water is still flowing because the temps have been unseasonably warm this winter in the northeast, which has also led to many bears still being active in NY/NJ areas. As long as I keep the filter warm and don't let it freeze it'll all be good. I've used it and other hollow fiber filters in similar weather many times.
