I went all in on Bright Tangerine when I got my Komodo early this year! Agreed on all points. They are as functional as they are seemingly bulletproof.
WHEN GOING SHOULDER RIG: I use a 5" monitor with a friction arm to place the monitor in front of me. I don't use the monitor on the top handle if I'm going with a shoulder setup. I'll be doing a follow up at some point with how I setup an EVF so please standby.
Solid rig and walkthrough! Nice to see someone else who pays attention to cable management. Definitely would have loved seeing this before starting my own Komodo rig journey. Too many options! Keep up the great work!!
There is a cage that wraps around the Komodo with a ton of mounting options. I have it and love it. Protects the camera keeps cables out of the way and loads of mounting points. But you loose the stop start feature it covers that port.
I just discovered the Kasbah system last night. Would love to hear more in depth thoughts on it…comfortability, scenes of it in use, etc. Great content man. I love that you share real world experience.
It's pretty comfortable. I can't really say much more on it other than like I mentioned in the video, it's breathable...we were filming in 101F in the humid St. Louis sun in August and we were soaked in sweat but the pad stayed dry. Very lightweight setup and comfortable to use.
Dude. I'm so happy you continue to level up with your craft. This setup looks so tailored for what you do and it's obvious you're in a flow state. Like Max Verstappen, unfortunately. haha
After some time, definitely coming around to your way of thinking in regards to the Komodo. Definitely a great rig, well setup. One thing you don't have shown here is any form of follow focus, I suppose you just rack everything by hand. You mention your shoulder mount EVF and alternate monitor, so that covers that part. Liked, commented.
Thanks! I flashed up a pic with the bright tangerine follow focus. That’s my preferred unit but it’s on back order. In the meantime I hand pull or use the nucleus M when it calls for it.
Thanks so much for this! Been trying to figure out a decent shoulder mount set-up. I know you mentioned this was mostly for resting the camera on your shoulder - but I'm interested to know what you'd recommend for a shoulder mounted shooting setup - i.e. pushing the monitor forward (rather than an EVF).
I’ll put a 5” monitor on a friction arm instead of the handle. I won’t use a 7” monitor dangling off the side because it gets kind of bulky for my liking.
Great video, thanks for sharing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I’m planning to switch from Z Cam E2S6 to Red Komodo and researching for best accessories… Your video seems like helped me out with a choice for a monitor 👍🏼 And that was probably the most complicated question and now it’s solved 🤓 Thank you 🙌🏼
Yes please show us the Tilta Mirage in details, I need to know if I'm buying it ! 😃😃 (And if you are doing such a test, can U try to control the VND with the Nucleus M ? I can't find anywhere if it's possible 😕) Thanks for your very useful and detailed videos, you helped me a lot building the perfect Z-Cam E2-S6 rig ! 😁
Great content as always, and what a gorgeous build! Oh boy, that Kasbah system looks very cool. Good to see you like the Mirage CPL filter. I'd been looking at the Vaxis CPL as I have the Mirage matte box, but saw a 1 star comment on B&H saying it had really bad colour shift. Good to know the Tilta version works for you.
Thanks for being there for me to stumble on to... 🙂 I sub'd!! I've spent countless hours searching for a system that allows me to go between RS(n) and some kind of baseplate... ArGh! LOL... Bright Tangerine looks like the final solution (brings to mind Palpatine Final Order references!!) LOL... Thanks for being so "Driven"...
Amazing video mate! I just got my Komodo and we have a similar build! May I ask your sdi protocol? I keep finding a lot of contradictory practices when it comes to Sdi
This is probably one of the best and well thought out rigs, one of the priciest too lol, quality nonetheless. Are the bright tangerine side plates compatible with the Red wing grip? Even with the run/stop top plate on? I know you didn't feature it but i find a side handle helpful and would like to know. Cheers mate
That's a good question. I don't have a wing grip to test. I don't think it would work though b/c the BT top plate hangs over the sides of the camera to connect to the side plates. I actually think Bright Tangerine should make their own version of the wing grip!
Great point. Because I’m left handed, I usually grip the camera with my left hand when shooting handheld my thumb naturally falls in the spot where I put the record button. But the beauty of the mutiny button is that you could put it anywhere
Sorry to hear that. In the end, it doesn't matter what cameras we all shoot on. They're just tools. That said, I found that the RED is a better tool for the type of work I do and I personally find the overall image the Komodo produces to be more in line with the look I'm trying to achieve. Unfortunately, I had a lot of complaints with the Z Cam lineup and those complaints took a very long time to be addressed. As far as I know, the Z Cam E2-F6 Pro still hasn't been released. Be sure to check out my full review on the Komodo. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Plm5fBwFxFo.html
@@joenicklo yeah just shortly after watching this video I found your other one talking about the user interface problems and it did explain a lot. Lol. Thanks for the response though. I greatly appreciate it. I have some other questions for you as well but I will try to send them on your webpage as they are more of your personal opinions. Again thank you very much.
i've been using the core swx npf dummy battery to d-tap to power my indie 7. i'm on my second one since the first stopped working. good to know about a backup (dc to lemo) when that might happen again.
Never had any issues with the DC to Lemo. The only thing you have to watch for is that the Indie 7's DC input can be a little close to some monitor mounts. For example, I cant use the GDU monitor mount + Indie 7 and use the DC input since the mount almost blocks the port.
Wow ! Very nice review of your Komodo production rig. Thank you for taking the time to do this breakdown. If you don't mind me asking you, how much cash outlay would your rig set me back if I were to duplicate it ?
@@joenicklo I Love the image that comes out of the Komodo, but you have indeed invested quite a chunk of change to only get 6K out of a camera. It is a wonderful image, and resolution isn't everything. When it comes to satisfying client expectations, if you show up for some jobs with a GH6, they will indeed question your level of professionality. If you tell them you're shooting on a RED, than that does carry a certain level of name recognition and respect. Not to mention the 16 bit colour science of the RedCode Raw codec makes your car footage look really amazing. I find a lot of mirrorless cameras give a hard digital video look to them, which is not always a desirable image to have to work with. I am considering the BMD URSA Mini Pro 12K also, and I can have almost a full production package for the cost of your rig build. 😳 I must admit your rig build for your Komodo looks really cool.😃
Great channel. I film drag racing events. I'm using a Sony A7 IV with a sony 70-200 F/4. I shoot 24fps @ 50s/s. Cant I use 60 or 80 s/s to keep a sharper image with cars passing at 150-200mph? It may be a good topic. Thank you for repling.
I usually pull focus by hand when shooting solo. I was using the Tilta Mini Follow Focus but after using the Bright Tangerine Follow Focus they loaned me out in Long Beach, that's definitely my go-to. Sadly, they're out of stock for a little bit longer. The thing is smooth as butter! If I'm working with an AC, we use the Nucleus M kit.
Great review bro. I seriously believe you have to e best set up yet. What was the weight of your entire rig set up on this video ? Including the Komodo and lens
@@joenicklo thanks for the information man! I’m looking for a tripod that could take the weight of your kit. I’m thinking of getting the same one but with some sigma cine lenses. Would you mind telling me the name of the tripod that you used with this kit.
@@joenicklo Hey man, I just got my Komodo with the same bright tangerine cage and build. I’m having trouble connecting the bright tangerine support to the metabones speed-booster adapter PL mount. Would you happen to know if I can take off the support foot, or if it’s even possible? Since I don’t think it fits
How do you like shooting on the Komodo for Fd ? do you feel like it's s the right camera for such a high paced action sport ? or do you think with the boot up time it can't bite you in the ass sometimes ? Just wondering how you like the overall work flow as I shoot a lot of face paced action style stuff and have been looking to maybe make the Komodo my main rig, just not sure yet.
We filmed almost the entire season on two Komodos. Krispy shot on his Gemini one race. We did just fine. We didn’t turn the cameras off unless we needed. Having v-mounts helps, and even then…swapping batteries at the right times prevented us from missing shots. I also carried my R5 with me most times just in case I needed to get something extremely quick.
I recently bought the bright tangerine and Metabones RF-to-PL Lens Adapter, but when I go to place the pl mount it doesn't seat In all the way. Looking at it seems like a gap like the speedbooster isn't long enough to seat with the support adapter. Any ideas
There's a screw at the bottom of the adapter support bracket that lets you fit the adapter into it. Loosen it, place the bracket on the adapter and then put the adapter on the camera. You should be able to tighten the bottom screw down and then bolt to the cage.
@@joenicklo I saw that and I unscrewed all the way but it still doesnt seem to go down far enough to lock I to the komodo, I have the speedbooster ultra 0.71x
Yes! It does. I don’t recall if it did with Pages OS4, if it did…then it wasn’t obvious enough for me to see but when I updated to Pages OS 5, the AF Touch Control was there. I’ve considered doing a video on it because it’s honestly not bad at all. I even used it to film some of the B-Roll shots in my latest video.
@@joenicklo Thank you so much for confirming this! As far as my research goes, you’re the first person that has confirmed this. Really appreciate it! I’ve just pulled the trigger and bought the monitor with the Komodo control.
@@AldinOrtinez Sweet, glad I could help. Make sure you have Pages OS 5 though. Just to let you know, I got better results with RF lenses over adapting EF lenses like the Sigma 18-35mm.
The dovetail has a flat bottom with mounting points (1/4 20 and 3/4) to mount tripod plates. You then put the dovetail onto the tripod as if it were the camera.
@@joenicklo thanks, so the BT left field system has two quick release points, one where the DJI plate attached to to the bottom of the camera can be released from the top part of baseplate/riser to enable quick mounting on gimbal, and then another quick release point from the bottom half of the baseplate when the bottom half is attached to the dovetail, with the dovetail being fixed to to tripod using whichever plate came with the camera or is compatible? So basically you can come on and off your tripod quickly with rods etc in place, or you can release just the upper part to go straight into gimbal?
I knew I shouldn't have cut that part out!!! To answer your question, I use an EVF but since I've yet to find an EVF that I really like, I didn't mention it. Alternatively, I use a friction arm to relocate the monitor to my eye line.
@@joenicklo Thats kinda what I figured! One of my least favorite parts of figuring out rig builds is quickly swapping the monitor location. Smallrigs HawkLawk, KondorBlue mini quick release, and Falcams Quick release arms look like good solutions. Have you tried the Zcam EVF? What are you currently using?
There aren't really *any* "cinema" lenses for RF mount outside of the upcoming Fuji ones. Samyang, Meike, and other Chinese made optics are very much considered bargain bin. Maybe we'll see canon release another cine prime set for their mount. P.s. that's a sick addition to the Komodo body, the support for bigger lenses is much needed, RF is flimsy.
The 11-20, Mirage and VND together, yes. I didn't stack the CPL. The Mirage vignettes slightly at 11mm and the VND has a massive X-pattern at the highest ND.
Depends what I’m shooting. I use the bright tangerine follow focus, the Tilta nucleus M or I pull focus by hand. I also use the autofocus system sometimes. Believe it or not, the Komodo has decent (not amazing) autofocus capabilities :)
@DrivenFilms oh i know but!.... i was really torn with what to get for my first cinema lens and went with the 50-135 tokina thanks to your overview. i fell in love. i got the nucleus nano 2 back when i didnt understand what follow focus system i would need. but thank you!
@@JasonCayabyab I believe the Kasbah shoulder pad will be in the way. If the shoulder pad isn't on you do not need the riser. At 9:36 you can see it on the dovetail without the riser.
@@JasonCayabyab as Joe confirmed, yes, it's an ARRI standard dovetail clamp on the baseplate. The riser is used to provide additional height clearance and transitioning speed when mounting the shoulder pad at the rear.
I don't get how you see the image when you're in shoulder position. On your picture you have no EVF and your monitor screen is placed behind your head...
I've answered this a few times in the comments. When I go shoulder rig, I use a friction arm with a 5" monitor. I have an EVF from Portkeys that I use from time to time however, I'm waiting on them to send me the new eyecup. I don't like the standard eyecup they put on it. Once I get it, I'll be doing another video explaining the EVF setup.
If needed I toss on the Nucleus M. You might have seen the Bright Tangerine follow focus briefly in the photo. I don't own that...yet, but it's my FF of choice.
I sincerely hope you're being sponsored by Bright Tangerine. Over $200 for a top handle?? Just no. It's a slick build, but no follow focus system?? No transmission system? This almost feels like a 'how much can I spend on a rig in just accessory parts' video. $1250 for the Kasbah shoulder pad and handles??! What?! I thought Wooden Camera stuff was pricey. I guess if you're working every single day, this could make sense, but there's so many other options at 1/4 the price. But I'm left wondering how useful it is to have the monitor on top of the handle, above and behind your head when the rig is sitting on your shoulder. The rig looks balanced and comfortable, but ultimately unusable in its current configuration.
