We spent about $250 on cloth diapers instead of the $2000 it would take to keep using disposables until potty training. Just a thought

Just a comment on the cloth diapering for the newborn stage: We knew we wanted to cloth diaper as soon as we found out we were pregnant. We did a TON of research (this video would have helped a lot at the time!) and decided to do the prefolds and newborn sized covers for the newborn stage and then pocket diapers in the one size. This worked really well for us and was cost effective and super easy to store the newborn diapers. Just a thought for anyone who wants to cloth diaper and plans on doing so for multiple children!

I cloth diapered my 4 children and am glad to see young mothers using them, but your generation of cloth diapers is so much nicer than our old style diapers. I'm going to sew a bunch for when my youngest daughter starts her family! Very cool.

Currently 24 weeks pregnant and bought second hand cloth diapers. Lucked out big time, got 29 diapers and like 40 liners for $150 !! I was so proud of myself for finding them- and they are boy colors and not girly. Im having a boy and I was going to not cloth diaper if I had to buy new. But they litterly fell into my lap and I am soo excited to not be filling up landfills....a lot that I have are bum genius so really liked your info on what to do. :)

I do cloth wipes along with cloth diapering! SO easy honestly. What I do is use a perineal bottle (the one the hospital gives for postpartum) and fill it up with water and add a couple drops of Dr Bronners hemp baby soap. I bought a 25 pack of wash cloths that I keep in a basket with the perineal squirt bottle beside the changing table. Then when I change a diaper I just grab the squirt bottle, squirt the water/soap mix onto the wash cloth and then put it into the wet bag along with the diaper. Easy as that & have had no rashes so far! Been doing it since my daughter was 2 weeks old and she’s almost 2 months now.

Just a heads up, vinegar can actually wear your washer down more quickly and you shouldn’t use essential oils because they can build up and cause repelling issues. As far as detergent goes, you just need to be sure they don’t contain any fabric softeners, that’s what makes detergents cloth diaper approved/not approved for the same reasons, they will coat the diaper fibers and cause repelling😊 also, microfiber is NOTORIOUS for holding onto stinks/stains as well as compression leaks so if you’re noticing any of those and can’t figure out why, it just might be the material! I love that you are bringing such awareness to this topic! 🥰🥰

I’m Canadian as well and I ended up emailing Nora’s nursery because I didn’t know why there wasn’t a Canadian shipping option available. They explained how lots of people didn’t know about the duty fees they had to pay so they took away the Canadian option, BUT!! They offered to do a manual order for me because I was really wanting to purchase some things and I couldn’t be more happy with their customer service!

For out of the house cloth diapering, I take a peri bottle to spray diapers off into a toilet (if accessible) then place into a wet bag. I just used the extra peri bottle I had lying around that the hospital gave me but they are pretty cheap online and great for on the go!

First, THIS IS AMAZING. Thank you! I was recently researching and found that replacing just ONE disposable a day through a childs 'diapered time' leads to approximately 900 less in a landfill (from an article I was reading). My husband and I figured out that it will save us approximately £250 british sterling (approx 400 dollars canadian) for one a day per one child. We are expecting twins and to start our next 'hoard' of cloth diapers it will maybe cost us a total of 250 canadian dollars. AND I can have family bring them to me from Canada to the UK so I can get the brand we really liked with our first. Cause I just cant fathom throwing out DOUBLE the disposable diapers. Even the water and cleaning products are so worth it! I just gotta buck up and get my routine on!

I absolutely love the pocket nappies! Paired with hemp liners my little one can be in one all night, and unless he has the mother of all poonamis overnight, he won't leak at all.

I'm planning on cloth diapering and my hubby is 100% on board but if my family found out they would probably think I'm crazy for it! But hey I like cleaning and I wont mind the extra time and effort. It's worth it in my eyes !

Yay, I’m so glad you guys are doing cloth now! I’m currently doing cloth on my third baby (did it with my other 2 as well) and I’m a super big cloth diaper fan. I think this is such a great intro video to cloth, so well done on that! Just a note on the vinegar - that can damage your diapers over time (especially the bamboo fibre and the elastics), so I would personally skip that. Also you might want to check your wash routine - they shouldn’t stink and have you washing them twice. Make sure you do a pre-wash rinse in the machine to get rid of all the pee and then do a long hot wash with the correct amount of detergent for a soiled load. This is super important - if you don’t use enough detergent your diapers can’t get clean and I did notice you said you don’t measure the detergent. Oh PS: cloth wipes are totally the bomb, they are just soooooo much more efficient at cleaning up messy poop. ;-)

Just so you know charcoal bamboo usually has microfiber in the middle. So it’s mostly microfiber anyways. Those noras nursery inserts have microfiber in the middle so they’re not 100% bamboo. Also you NEED 2 washes EVERY TIME you wash diapers. Please please you need to put them through 2 full washes or else your diapers WILL smell funky. The first wash is to remove the bulk of the pee and poop. The second wash is to deep clean them. Since you have a front loader you need to fill the drum 1/2-3/4 full so the diapers agitate properly and get clean. NEVER wash your diapers with vinegar! It’s so bad for your diapers and washing machine. It’ll wear them down faster. You also need to test your water hardness (this is very important please don’t skimp out on this) Last note, diy “laundry detergent” is not good for your diapers either. They don’t contain surfactants which is what properly cleans your diapers. Sounds tempting because it’s cheap but it’s not effective! I’ve been cloth diapering almost 4 years and I’ve gone through all this. Youre doing great but you should definitely do more research on your wash routine! Allaboutclothdiapers is a great website with a ton of information!

Here are some tips from someone who raised two children in the age before disposable nappies (diapers). Buy a lidded bucket to keep in the nursery where you change baby. Fill it with water and a product called Napisan (Australia) - it is a soap, disinfectant, bleach powder. The US equivalent is something you might find as a pre-wash stain remover in the washing detergent aisle. Daily, drain and refill the bucket. Tip the drained soiled nappies into the washing machine and then (if possible) hang them out on a clothes line in the sun. You will have clean, white, fluffy nappies and no nappy rash. I used to use a 'nappy liner' in the nappies as well. I used that to put solids into the toilet for disposal. Enjoy your babies while you can - it's a wonderful time although exhausting.

I do cloth diapering (so happy with it - like you say, it is super easy!) but I just wanted to add to your wonderful video that YES IT DOES SAVE MONEY - for us anyway! We only spent a couple hundred dollars, and will sell them when we're done for probably $100-$150... so we spent $100 for 2+ years worth of diapers! And the extra loads of laundry are barely unnoticeable on our water bill - average $5/month more than before we started doing cloth.

A great day to deal with poop is to do Elimination communication along with the cloth. If you're baby poops around the same time(s) every day you can put them over a potty, bowl, or the toilet and invite them to go. It makes it so much easier to cloth diaper when pairing it with EC. You don't necessarily catch everything every time, but it can reduce the amount of changes.

Few things. Fitteds and flats were not mentioned here. Flats are great for newborns or can be added into a pocket. People (myself included) also use flour sacks towels making it even cheaper. Fitteds are great for heavy wetters or overnight. Wool diaper covers are great as well. A bit pricier but they can be brought second hand or on sale. (I got some from Nicky's diaper for $15.) Wool and fitteds make a great overnight system. For my younger son, I add a thirsties hemp insert and its perfect. Vinegar is not recommended in washes with pul. (The plastic covers) They can damage them. Stripping shouldnt be routine. If so, your wash routine probably needs work. Stripping should, usually, only be done you get preloved diapers, you've used the wrong detergent/diaper cream/etc, or if you had hard water. If you have hard water, you need a softener like borax. Newborn diaper stashes can be found used rather cheap. Green mountain sells flats or prefolds for around $2 a piece. You need about 12 per day. Diaper covers can be brought used for around $5. Even the newborn stage can be much cheaper than disposables. Fluff love university is a good resource

Prefolds with a snappi fastener are my favorite from all I've tried. I got some double gusset covers for them on Amazon that I love. Another pro is the cover makes a rash free reusable swim diaper that holds in poo great. Unfortunately my husband detests cloth diapering so I eventually had to stop because of his constant complaining, he is somebody that wants 100% convenience . We did a diaper service for the first 4 months for my current baby which I loved. It's tough when you are into natural products and your spouse is the opposite! I gave up fighting with him. Anyways, I rarely comment on RU-vid, but I love your channel, and I'm a huge thrifter too. I'd love to see more thrift videos! They make me irrationally happy. I wish we li edin Canada so we could thrift together.

"It's only been 4 hours and the diaper is leaking...." After nearly 30 years in the cloth diapering business, I've heard it all! And, the internet is making things worse, not better. I raised 4 children, changing and washing over 10,000 cloth diapers in the process. After the third child, I designed the first "one-size-fits-all" pinless, no-fold cloth diaper and started what is now the oldest and largest pinless pre-folded cloth diaper business in Canada. Because of our knowledge in this field, every day, parents turn to us with questions. With the internet as a resource, the once simple use of cloth diapers, has been made needlessly complicated. It's frustrating to hear from moms and dads who are having problems--even to the point where their babies are suffering--because they have read some stupid advice, or bought some badly designed diapers from the internet. Mothers who have a baby just a few months old seem to think they are qualified to hand out advice on the internet. Other mothers, lacking confidence in their own common sense, follow other people's silly advice. Some mothers who have a baby a few weeks old, seem to think they have designed the best diaper in the world and put it on the market without thoroughly testing it. Some of those diaper makers even seem to think they can change someone else's idea a little and then claim they have invented something new and better! With the internet, these shoddy products and bad advice trap new parents into wasting a lot of money, and causing babies discomfort even to the point of bleeding diaper rash. When things get really bad, moms look for someone to ask who has years of experience, and that's when they find us. So here are: TOP 10 MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN USING CLOTH DIAPERS 1. Not changing the baby frequently enough is a mistake. Cloth diapers must be changed as soon as baby wets, if not, leakage and diaper rash will occur. Would adults like to sit in wet underwear for a couple of hours? Letting a baby sit in a wet diaper for hours is neglect and abuse! Even if you are shopping or travelling, STOP, and change the wet diaper. Parents who start off by using disposable diapers have been mislead by diaper companies to think that a diaper can be left on for 4-12 hours. 2. Not buying enough cloth diapers is a mistake. If you don't have at least 36 diapers, you won't be able to change baby after each wetting. You need at least 20 dry diapers while the others are going through laundering. If you get less than 36, they will wear out before baby is potty trained, because with fewer diapers, they will be laundered more frequently. 3. Using laundry products that damage diaper fabric or baby's skin is a mistake. Many detergents now include enzymes, bleach, scent, optic whiteners, color, fabric softener, and other chemicals that actually damage the diapers, remain in the fabric, and will cause diaper rash. Instead, use only natural products: 1/2 cup washing soda and 1/2 cup borax per load, easy and inexpensive. Don't use fabric softener. It leaves a residue in the fabric which eventually causes the diapers to be water-repellent. The scent and other chemicals in fabric softener also cause diaper rash. 1/2 cup white vinegar in the final rinse is a natural fabric softener and pH adjuster. Don't bleach your diapers--it eats away the fabric and the residue causes rash. 4. Buying diapers which use synthetic fabrics for the absorbent component is a mistake. Synthetics cause both immediate and long-term problems. Only natural fibers should be next to baby's skin. Cotton is a time-proven winner for absorbency and gentleness. Microfiber "hooks" even the most delicate skin--the "hooking" quality makes it suitable for dusting, not diapering! Fleece is HOT, hence it's use as "polar" fleece. Before you put cute, fuzzy fleece on your baby's bottom, think about how you would feel in fleece underwear on a summer day. Synthetic fabrics build up residue, eventually losing their absorbency--that's why you hear about people "stripping" their diapers. 5. Using "pocket" diapers. Instead of stuffing extra inserts into pockets for extra absorbency, just change the baby as soon as he wets. With pocket diapers, you will need to handle a poopy diaper to get the insert out before laundering. Stuffing pockets takes extra time. 6. Not washing diapers daily is a mistake. You won't have enough dry diapers on hand, and won't be able to change baby as soon as he wets. Diapers that sit in the diaper pail for more than a day start to smell, take longer to come clean, and stains set. Ammonia builds up so the laundered diapers will have a weird smell when baby wets, and your baby may get diaper rash. 7. Not rinsing off poopy diapers is a mistake. Yes, even those runny newborn breastfed poops MUST be cleaned off before they go into the diaper pail. Use diaper liners, or rinse the diapers by dunking or spraying them. Don't expect your washing machine to get the diapers clean if you throw poopy ones in there, especially if you let them sit for more than a day--yuck. Great grandma would be scandalized at that kind of laziness. Your washing machine is not a septic tank, and you do not want your regular laundry to be contaminated by diapering residue. For the same reason, don't use your washing machine to hold soiled diapers till laundry time--use a diaper pail. 8. Mistake: using COLD water to wash diapers, or using too small an amount of water. To be clean and sanitary, diapers must be washed in HOT water, and dried in a HOT dryer (or dried in the sun, which sterilizes with UV rays). Use plenty of water to be sure the diapers are thoroughly clean and rinsed. Pre-rinse and final rinse can be with cold water, but the main wash must be HOT! Parents tell us that the cheap made in China all-in-one diapers lose the waterproofing in the outer layer after just a couple of washes in hot water. If you are buying all-in-ones make sure the instructions say "hot water wash/ hot dryer". If you are using a detergent that works in cold water, you still need to use hot water for diapers. 9. Putting natural oils in the diaper pail is a mistake. Using precious tea tree oil, grapefruit seed extract, or aromatherapy oils for this purpose is wasting earth's natural resources, wasting your money, ineffective and even damaging for diapers. Some aromatherapy oils can cause adverse reactions when used inappropriately, as I've learned from experience. Oil residue on diapers will cause them to be water-repellent instead of absorbent. The amount of oil you put in the diaper pail is not enough to be significantly anti-bacterial. Don't waste these valuable oils in the diaper pail--instead, wash your diapers daily. 10. Expecting cloth diapers to look like disposables is a mistake. Disposables are very thin and narrow because the chemical crystals inside swell up when wet. Cloth diapers do not change shape when wet, so are designed to put absorbency where it is needed. This will not cause any discomfort to baby. In fact, for babies who have hips that are "out" from their delivery, doctors recommend double-diapering so that the thickness between the legs will put them in the froggy position in order for the hips to go back into place. You will cause problems for your baby by putting her into tight-fitting diapers, sleepers, or baby carriers that position the legs straight down. Cloth diapering is easy--just keep baby in a dry diaper, use a very simple laundry procedure every day, and question any advice you get from inexperienced diaper users.

My husband and I are still in the planning stages, and won't even be trying for a baby for another few months. But I really try to plan as much as I can before things happen, and these videos are soooo helpful!

Just a note on Sun bleaching, it's not a reliable way to remove stains because essentially the poop is still there. If you are getting stains then your wash routine needs review; I highly recommend clean cloth nappies or fluff love university for more information on building a science based wash routine! We've been using pre fold cloth diapers on our little miss since she was 4 days old❤Our city has a diaper service and it has been amazing! We use a snappi to help with fit and One Size Rumparooz covers! It's been awesome so far!

I will look up that blog with the cost comparison, and I am going to attempt cloth diapering at night again (*bites nails*) just because you have inspired me to do so! 🤩 Idk if/when you would want to even try this, but I have been using a bar of plain, no-smell castille soap dissolved in water (in a locked, empty chlorine bucket my dad gave me) along with a sprinkle of plain baking soda to wash the diapers (and all my clothes) for the longest time now, and it has been working great! I put the diapers on a rinse with like a cup of vinegar because I read to do that after washing clothes with castille soap. I hope this helps...you help me all the time with your videos! I purchased a variety of cloth diapers at a consignment shop. They were super cheap and look brand new. Just an idea if you don't know what kind you'll like and don't want to waste a bunch of money.

Tip for anyone washing newborn diapers with the poop included - do a quick pre wash first with a bit of detergent to get rid of the solids and then do a full wash after that 👍🏼

I loved this!! I e been cloth diapering for years and I know this will be so helpful for others because it is still so helpful for me. We have the all-in-one cloth diapers from Thirsties and BumGenius, we love them. We do cloth diapering half time but might try full-time to see what it’s like! We save so much money doing this and I also make a diapering spray to use with reusable cloth wipes. We use the toilet sprayer and the Spray Pal for poopy diapers, works so well! Awesome, informative video. Also! Depending on where you live you can find places that do newborn diaper rentals. We've done that with both our boys until they were able to fit in the bigger cloth diapers.

wow, it's been 1 year since eloise's 18 month video !!! I would like to see her more in the videos, I seem to miss her. Now she's so smart, and seems to have so much personality of her own. and a big leap in development. Just like theo, I can't wait to see you walking, just imagine? He and Eloise walking together. they will be so cute.

Bonus tip: You can wash the bamboo sheets as well, when there was no poop. 👍🏻😁 At least the ones I bought. Just try, if yours survive the washer.
