The 2001 to '09 Volvos S60 still look great and are the best used car deals around and they won't rust unless there was body work done to them...my 2004 still looks brand new inside and out! Just find one that has been well maintained.

I love my Volvos. Cheapest and most reliable cars I've owned. I bought my 2002 for $600 that needed some work and my 2001 for $350 as a a parts car with a blown turbo which turned winter beater which I sold 2 years later for profit. TCV is a typical thing to go on these but could also be vacuum hoses. Timing code is likely a stuck VVT solenoid. Gears don't really fail that often. If you are gonna do the timing belt be sure to change tensioner and water pump at the same time. I would also do the PCV since that's likely why the cam seals blew out.
@lilriggs
@lilriggs 5 лет назад
I just did the cam seal on this exact model for a friend, super easy. Mark the T-belt position on the gear and just work the belt off. The crank gear has a center bolt and will come off the cam. Old seal was almost completely out of its groove and just pulled off the end of the cam. Bought new seal at Napa and tapped it back onto the cam and bolted everything back up.

Couple things- The PCV is a pain but 98% of the time any oil leaks for these are due to it being clogged up. Quickest test is to put a rubber glove over the oil fill hole- if it inflated farts take off the intake manifold and swap out the PCV and lines. Be careful with the battery- if it’s totally drained for long enough it will throw an SRS and air bag light that you need a high end tool or Vida/Dice to clear. (Buying a Knick off vida/dice is cheaper than having a dealer clear the code, haha. Plus you can do a full fault trace on every system, data logging, live graphs, etc) Related tip-If you are digging into the dash remove the battery first, if you disconnect the climate controls with the battery connected you get the same SRS/airbag light. The TCV likely wouldn’t throw a code, I would look for a brittle vacuum line. There’s one that goes to the upper right side of the intake manifold that usually gets knocked around a lot when you’re working, so check that line. Another big source of a vacuum leak is the big rubber hose from the over the engine pipe to the intercooler. The timing issue might just be the camshaft adjustment solenoid, same with the oil on the belt, worth replacing it before you go ahead and mess with the timing.

My guess is #3 - the VVT hub itself is leaking oil due to a bad seal. I just had mine replaced due to a leak in the timing belt area. Mechanic told me these can give way and a ton of oil will blow out. Mine was on the edge. He also advised against trying to replace the VVT seal - said they are known to fail again quickly.
@cbpldc

It's possible that the belt has slipped a tooth due to all of the oil on it. I mean, its possible that its a VVT solenoid too, but its a good thing you're replacing the belt.

for the turbo check the turbo inlet pipe, they usually crack near of the turbo. for the timing belt i don't think that is necesary. Timing belt should be replace every 110.000 miles. Still, Usually is not the belt that it breaks is the tensioner or the the water pump. Also, check the engine oil breather... when they clogged, build pressure and affects the seals!! JR, those VVT seals go because the PCV system is clogged. Easy test, take a rubber glove and a rubber band, remove the oil cap and cover the oil fill hole with the glove/rubber band. Turn the car on and if it inflates, it's a clogged PCV system. But since your seal is blown (happened to my S60R) then your PCV system is gone too. Super pain in the ass job when it comes to the banjo bolts that need to be installed. You've opened a can of worms buying a p2 s60 lol. Let me know if you have any questions, I've done more work to my S60R than I care to admit.

Guaranteed, as a volvo master level technician, the breather box(PCV oil system) is clogged. It is probably very sludgy inside the engine and to truly fix the issue, which ultimately is causing the oil leakage, the entire breather box system, including hoses needs to be replaced. You need to make sure the oil galleys and passageways are free and clear, mainly the passageway connected directly to the breather box is clear of blockage. If its clogged, you would have to remove the oil pan to manually clear all blockages. Best of luck to you sir! Also, make sure to clean the throttle body when out as oil will also coat and cause issues here and you may as well when doing it as the inlet manifold needs to be removed.
@matthewfurtado1040
@matthewfurtado1040 5 лет назад
Should have added this in, easiest way to test the breather box is yo put a vacuum gauge on the dipstick port with engine running, a good breather system should show a good steady vacuum. A weak or fluttering on the low side indicates that the breather system is clogged.

The oil seal on the Turbo leaking is common check that easy to replace. The MacPherson struts I would just go for used replacements they are very easy to check and replace when in one piece. Change the oil to FULLY synthetic bc of the Turbo or you will burn it out. The Relay box beside the air filter - spray the relay contacts with Electrical cleaner by removing each one 3 times to get all corrosion off - 18 years in the engine compartment means corrosion! did magic for my car...

I have a C70 2.5 T5 which I think uses an engine closely related to your 2.4 T. If you were keeping the car you should consider changing the serpentine belts (2) as they fail taking out the cam belt which leads to valve/piston contact. The engine remaps very well to 250-260 bhp.
@Creating_Space

have never heard of a serpentine belt causing internal engine damage. The timing belt is responsible for piston/cam/valve timing.
@rhiantaylor3446

@@Creating_Space You may not have geard of this but, when the serpentine fails on this engine, poor design means that they commonly get caught up in the cam belt, snapping it, hence the engine damage.

That trim piece at the bottom corners of the windshields that you said you are not replacing costs all of $8.50 each from Volvo and snaps in. My '05 VVT is on both cams, and the VVT hubs leaked at 118,000 miles, causing oil in the timing belt cover chamber. Not cheap to replace.

yeah those cam seals often leak on those S60s. you might wanna hit up my buddies Robert Spinner (aka. RobertDIY on RU-vid) and David Bello. They are both long time Volvo enthusiasts from Albuquerque who know and can answer pretty much any Volvo questions you may have and let you know what kinds of things you should look out for on these cars. As for the headlight wipers, those you can find dirt cheap online I believe. they do of course sell them at the dealership which of course is more expensive. The ones on my Saab were like $20 each, ekk... But yeah I would address the oil leak immediately and then maybe check out the PCV system with the glove test. RobertDIY has a video on that procedure if you're not familiar with it. Pretty straight forward. I look forward to seeing the next video on this S60

If the chair has a rip, they have a product which is to repair vynil & leather, made by Permatex it includes, color sample sheets, hardner , & a heating tool, which you could probably, get the two sides, use heat to repair the rip.

And the strut tops. 2nd hand cars must be much more expensive in the US. Have just bought a 2000 V70 T5 off my neighbour for £400 ( 490 usd ). Have just done my strut tops, needs a bonnet ( chronic lacquer peel - £40 for one in same colour nearby ), front brakes discs ( rotors?) and pads ought to be done and that's it to get it sorted. I'm keeping it as its useful and a hoot to drive, but I'd only see my money back if I sold it. There is zero profit in it.

Volvo had some great engineering on their "mid-size" engines. They were probably the #1 maker of five-cylinder engines, ever. Too bad that from now on all their designs are hampered by the Chinese home-market regulation of NO ENGINES OVER TWO LITERS.
