@@markstevens1729 Yet again, we have another American who only likes GM and Ford products. Cars like these are not cheap, they need preventive maintenance which is more expensive than other brands and they also have maintenance intervals, which are made for reliability reasons - you don't want to slack on them. These cars depreciate and when you have Ferrari-priced maintenance in a Toyota-priced car, you're asking for it. People buy these cheap, except cheap maintenance prices, but realise they can't afford it, so the cars break and break and come to a point where it costs an arm and a leg to fix and get right. They then get sold on and bought by people like Hoovie, who rants about their reliability. Smh American people...
@@saimk4239 im an american who doesnt like american cars. these bmws are junk lol who buys something to only have it in the shop and cost u a fortune lol i would never. give me a new one on under warranty or give me a used lexus i never have to worry about
@@saimk4239 Bro how did you copy exactly what I was going to say! Haha well said. People always have something to say and have no clue. The video even shows how dumb people can be, you take it to the dealer and they say it’s good to go and things that have been checked and in reality it hasn’t, so the owner is expecting a good car. These cars are for people with money and who’s familiar to the car. People love to get their opinions rushed on here as if BMWs 3L - 6L performance calibrated engines are suppose to be as simple and cheap as the a 1.5L-2.5L Toyota/Honda/ economy focus or whatever motors, ridiculous.
I am a dealer tech for Mercedes, and I just want to say you nailed it on the head with your rant on dealers. I’ve been in the game over 19 years now, and I can honestly say it’s a different world! All the dealers are corporate owned now. The pride in ownership of these dealers is gone. They are ran by bean counters and under paid “ managers” that couldn’t care less about the customer. The pressure to produce, and lack of training is a killer.
It's a US-made euro-bad-car, that's even worst, American workers can't assemble that mess, not even the Germans can, and maintain it? takes some patience to do it 19 years, well done, feel good for your work
I do my own work on my Benz. I trust my Mexican to change my hoses more than any dealer in San Diego. Specialty Benz repairs suck too. They couldnt even replace the purge valve hose when it tore before they had it for a week while doing my tranny mount and brake flush.
Gonna say, I owned one of these X5 models bought of my cousin's wife after he died. Loved the engine, terrible fuel economy and breaking plastic parts, etc. What pissed me off was the battery went bad and it is located in the back under the spare, under bolts. Sold it for 2000 and bought a Tacoma and Benz instead.
My favorite thing about Hoovie, The Wiziard and Ninja’s channels is that they have seen fit to fight the common notion that all “mechanics” are out to get you… as a tech myself, no longer making a living that way, it warms my heart to see good folks doing things right and finding a way to make financial gain in an honest and helpful way for folks who may not know anything about the topics at hand. THIS! This is what RU-vid started as and these fellas have refined it into “Edutainment”! I want in!
@shawn bishop if you were in Illinois I know a guy from Lebanon most honest and trustworthy mechanic I’ve ever met and one of the best human beings I’ve met too he specializes in all cars but his son is into BMWs especially the five series so much so that I would buy a BMW because of his father and I have never heard anything positive about BMW maintenance
I'd definitely polish up the headlights on all the 2001 line-up models of yours, so they would almost look brand new on photos from a certain distance (I guess there will be a lot of photos now that you've collected them all). Clouded, yellowish headlights can really age down a cars' look, worth doing them.
On the flip side, finding the wrong independent shop and your car is toasted! The guy might claim to know how to work on your specific car/engine and ends up messing it up completely!
It would be cool to see Tyler’s fleet of early 2000s, all silver BMW fleet alongside all new, comparable BMW vehicles in silver. M8 next to the Z8, Z4 next to the Z3, etc
@@flbartlett you do realise that you can 'feel' massively screwed right? So grammatically there was nothing wrong with that sentence. It was expressing a state of mind. But hey it's an x5 so both work perfectly fine .
@@flbartlett Ha, all good I was just stirring shit. Can't say I've seen youtube marketing grammerly, I just get a tonne of political ads for Australia.
Yeah spend $20 on one of those Meguiars headlight polishing kits. I was able to do 4 or 5 cars with that before I ran out, made them all look like brand new and idiot proof, they give you all the sandpaper and polish in one box.
And then the rear lower control arm bushings. And I think the air suspension wasn’t designed well, I had clips crack on mine and it exposed a leak, air suspension problems.
Man I almost want to make the trip across the country to have Jonny go thru my 02 325ci. Love this era of bmw. This video has me wanting an X5 now as a daily 😳
Jonny was being polite, he didn't want to say the dealer defrauded Tyler on camera. Which is exactly what the dealer did as they clearly didn't do an inspection and just ticked all the boxes. If a dealer did that to me it'd be lawsuit time.
@@jwenting Read the fine print. Surely you don't think a dealership is going to open itself up to litigation for some meth-uped washed-out mechanic do you?
This would make for an amazing Cartrek episode. Instead of constant challenges, an actual Top Gear like presentation/tribute about the 2001 BMW lineup like what they did with Lancia.
I wonder if the seller faked the inspection by downloading a template inspection sheet off the internet and adding their own check marks. Like a blank Word document where they can type the check marks in. And they marked some problems to make themselves seem honest.
Or the inspector at the BMW dealership mixed up two different cars and that's why he said some things on Hoovie's BMW were broken but they really were fine (like tie rods) and passed the inspection when it shouldn't have.
Just this morning on Jonny's channel a customer brought in a BMW straight from the dealer for work. He did have the dealer replace the battery with an AGM version and when Jonny looked at it, it wasn't an AGM battery. There's a reason we call them "stealers" not "dealers".
Volvo just issued a recall for our 2002 and 2007 wagons. We'll have to have the airbags replaced at the dealership. I'm scared these guys will screw it up in a hurry and get me killed!
I'm lucky I got a good Honda dealer by me. Never up sell, let me known my Acura is in great shape and actually do work. I also only do things like alignment and fluids with them. There is other brands around that I'd never even drive into the lot of.
@8:09 did you see the amount of smoke coming out when you floored it? You can definitely see how the view gets grayed out and clears up once you let off the throttle.
I just bought an X5 3.0 SPORT w those 4.4 20 inch wheels that hoovie has in his video. Just bought all new 20 inch toyos at iii. I put drilled and slotted rotors all new tires, new rear brakes, new o2 sensors, spark plugs, filters and fluids, and got it to pass smog. Got it for 2k 140k miles clean title mint cherry black interior. It runs great. Just tinted it. I paid 1000$ back fees and about 1k in service i did myself and parts. It a great vehicle now.
actually it would be better than one of his cars, that fiat 124 spider he has and covered is exceptionally rough and needs a full bare metal respray with repairs, with fog lights that have damaged the non original hood fitted to it, and he's asking 15K, when its at most a 6.5K car with the amount of money and work its gonna cost to refinish it back to an acceptable standard, which would be another 12 grand provided they dont find anything else wrong with it.
I hope Tyler orders a professional photoshoot of the BMW dream team in style of 1999-2001 sales brochures with sunsets and marker lights and glossy pavement. I would buy a poster of that.
My mom briefly owned one of those first gen 4.6is's that her friend sold her *very* used in like 2014. I was only 18 but even then I still knew how much of a tragedy it was gonna be, and I tried to talk her out of it but she loved the way it drove and she got a "great deal" on it from the friend. That thing wound up being such a massive pile of shit, she traded it in like 8 months afterwards. It just did not want to live on this earth. I've never seen a car break so comically so many times
So many people think used BMWs are great deals. They’re only great if they’ve been really properly maintained, which most haven’t. I bought a manual E53 budgeting for a grand or two in repairs, in six months it’s only needed an oil change.
When you first buy a BMW used you are can understand how the Germans could think they could fight the world in two world wars. The cars are beautifully engineered. After you own them and they are out of warranty, you then see why they lost two world wars. My 2002 330CI was gorgeous, until the sunroof broke, the electrical issues, and the interior glue started falling apart. The sagging headliner was a sign that the car needed to go. I look at BMW's, but I don't buy anymore. Lexus for me.
@@stormix5755 Even when they have been maintained well, it's only a matter of time before you need to tear the front of your car off for a repair or empty your pockets.
@@Widemouth1832 yep you cannot beat lexus quality. My 2005 ES330 now has just passed 270,000 miles and it is absolutely perfect. Just needed general maintenance. Every little feature still works too and it’s in beautiful shape. I pamper it lol. I also recently just bought a very neglected GS430, needs a lot of cosmetic work but mechanically it’s very welll and it’s a beast!
@@jcmerchan5336 Seems probable - given that the seller purchased the PPI, it would be in their best interest to go easy on a vehicle on its way to an out-of-state buyer.
Spot on with your assessment of dealerships. If it doesn't throw a code or explode, they want nothing to do with it. Companies don't stand behind their products anymore.
Tbh this has become one of my most favourite Shows on RU-vid rn. Just like Johnny said, this has never been done before and the lineup youre creating is incredibly unique. Really looking forward to the track day!
owner probably revealed he was only inspecting it to sell it. If he had said he was inspecting it to fix then they would have found everything plus things not needed to stack on top !
Sounds like someone did a desk-based inspection and got check happy with their water-cooled ball point pen. In other trades they call that "radioing" an inspection.
Well done Hoovie. Massive respect to you for also supporting your local community both financially and with marketing (wizard and car ninja) keep up the good work
I stopped working for dealerships when they stopped increasing pay based on door rates and replaced them with upsell incentives, productivity incentives, customer survey results. They hope that these incentives make techs better, but because they get flat rate, it's better to just rush the job and beat the labor time than to try for these bonus incentives
I used to work for a service centre and have been around mechanics most of my life. The book rates are weird. Some "times" are so easily beatable it's comical while others are so tight it's comical. Right now, I know a mech who charges $1200 for a 4 wheel brake job including rotors (not calipers) for a Ford F150 pickup and the dealer charges $1400 per axle. If there are no issues the parts cost him $300 and he can bang it off in about an hour.
I had the video playing in the background while doing college homework. I heard MX5 in the intro and you got my attention lol. In my head my mind went "The only M X5 I know is the maxda MX5." Hoovie, I miss your red MX5. The good old days were great. Love the content! Keep it up. Much love
I have a 2004 X5 with the 3.0L 6 cylinder and I love that thing. I've had some issues over the years, but nothing out of the ordinary. Suspension, tires, brakes, power steering pump and some air con maintenance. Things that just eventually go out ,especially on a 16/17 year old vehicle. Seeing your's swaying when you turned the wheel back and forth was nuts and I was telling my wife today as we were on a round a bout to get on the freeway how ours drives more like a sports car than an SUV. I was accelerating around the roundy thing, not slowing down. Once ninja sorts your out, you'll love it for sure.
I’m so happy for your family of bmws. Can’t wait to see them lined up. When I was ten I used to build and spec. out these cars online with dial-up internet.
Tyler's looking at the camera every time Ninja shows an inconsistency is basically Tyler giving an F you to the dealership and the seller who've obviously done a number here.
Wet sand from as low as 400 up to 800, let dry, then apply spraymax 2k clear for a full lense restoration that'll last years. (lurk in a headlight enthusiast group on fb and that's the go to method for restoring lenses)
Hoovie you saved my life. Everytime I get tempted with a cheap e36/46 I watch your videos and it brings back the ptsd of the previous bimmers I've owned.
Man you'r channel is one of the most pleasant channels to watch and interesting content all the time I love that you go and talk to mechanics, most of the people get their knowledge about cars from dealers. Not that they don’t know about them but well they want to sell you the car.
Another great vid Hoovie. Interesting to know that even getting a car inspected for seemingly simple stuff is not being done very well. I work in a way, way different business and am finding the same thing--basic shit that easily can cost 2-4 times more in the end --if it is missed in the first review. I no longer--ever--take the first opinion as I was able to do just a couple of years ago. A lot of amateurs out there, but now all at once.
I own a 2004 X5 3.0L with 6speed manual. It's been the most reliable car I've ever owned, 300,000km and still my daily driver. The V8s had alot a issues and all that power really put that drivetrain to work but with the inline 6 👌
I've got a 3l e53 as a diesel and has over 250'000km at the moment, not a single relevant repair done yet. It's beside my e36 328i i had, the most reliable car i've ever owned!
I still love my 2005 x5M. The windows have been a pain in the ass, but when it's mattered, she got me where I was going. And when she's feeling well she drives like a dream.
My X brother in law was a service writer for several Mercedes and BMW dealerships in LA. What people don't but should know is they work on commission. That should tell you all you need to know. When you drive up to a service department at your dealership, the service writer is the first person you meet. Cue the theme to Jaws.
Dude's probably a friend with a tech at that dealership. "Hey, could you inspect this car real quick and make it look good for me, I'll buy you a beer."
Yep, saw that cloud of /blue/white smoke. Valve seals usually the problem. You can usually tell the maintenance history on a vehicle when the headlight covers are almost opaque due to lack of prior owners interest in spending $75 to fix.
These engines are fantastic and the feel of these early X5s, like the first gen L322 it shared so much with, is unbeatable. But there is just so much that keeps breaking. The transmission fail safe mode is a big one.
The Dream Team is finally assembled! He collected them like Pokémon's and saved them from a certain death! And made the Car Ninja earn a lot of money in the process! 🤣🤣🤣
My man is getting the best line up bmw ever did together!! I can't wait to see them on the track and have those pictures. I beg of a few posters made when it's all said and done!!
If you want to collect good Hyundai’s they should all be 2007-2009. They had a 3 year run just building bulletproof fantastic cars for a great value. Then they started trying to get fancy and the reliability suffered. I work on these things for a living and have owned 2 Tucson’s (1 2.0L and 1 2.7L). 2 Santa Fe’s, both 3.3L’s. And a Veracruz with the 3.8L. They’ve all been high mileage units and they’ve all been unbelievably reliable.
I've learned that the trick to owning older BMWs is that you'd better know how to turn wrenches. We currently have an e36, e39, and an e53 in the family. All have issues, but they are loveable vehicles. Don't want any newer ones, though.
I agree. I work as a mechanic and drive BMWs because I avoid the steep stealership repair costs and fix them myself. My gf and I owned 3 between us. I work specifically at a Toyota dealership. They’re more reliable cars but I would never buy one myself because they don’t have personality.
E36 M3 owner here. Haven't had major issues. Replaced a bunch of old rubber hoses because it had to be done. Starter, alternator, took care of fluid leaks and currently working on suspension bushings. Other than that I love the shit out of my car.
OH my god man !!! is there's mechanics like this guy ?! I always find that only on RU-vid !!! in reality it's a miracle finding a shop that will do any paint correction or modification what so ever on my car at upstate NY
I really enjoyed the discussion on tech and dealers and you said it spot on! although I will say it's warranted to ask for an hour to "see why the check engine light is on." If they had just said "tell me the codes" that would be different. But it's finding out why those codes turned on that is the $140. Just my .02
@@martinmessineo4964 this engine is the M62, the N62 which was in his 645ci had the valve stem seal issue. The M62 has it's own set of issues. Most likely it is the PCV.
Dealerships should be held liable for this, or at least news outlets should be jumping on the fact that dealers charge a hefty fee to inspect... except they didn't inspect.
@@Alex0992 You didn't watch the video... he literally has a print out of things inspected on the vehicle by the dealership... watch videos before replying
@@kowalski5599 I did watch the video. Having documents doesnt mean the seller didn't lie fool. The seller could know someone that works at the dealership. He could've photoshopped some documents. It's plenty of ways to produce a fake dealer inspection. Even Tyler could e made all this up to keep his gullible image up.
I shat my pants when I heard 1100 for the valve cover gasket, believe me I replayed that part some times over to make sure I hear correct.. but I'm happy for you that you were glad
