There's no way that they wouldn't find out about something like that. Then again, it wasn't the McAlister house where the police came and arrested the wet bandits, it was the neighbors' across the street where the final showdown between them and Kevin happened before Marley saved him. And wasn't Kevin's phone call to the police before they came an anonymous call where Kevin didn't leave his name? And he told them the bandits were at the neighbors' address and not his (which was why he led them over there)? So it was never officially reported to the police that anyone even broke into the McAlister house, now that I recall. It's still not realistic though because in real life a kid would more likely immediately run to the police as soon as he knew burglars were coming there, or at least run to a trusted adult, instead of boobytrapping his house with flamethrowers, paint cans on strings, falling irons, and icy stairs. But as Jeremy on Cinamasins says, movie's gotta movie
