I mean tbf Homestar used to be basically the MASCOT of flash animation. It probably could’ve been more popular in the modern day if it was more consistent
Genuinely sucks how companies disregard animations by not only canceling but also removing them from platforms that no one is able to see. I’m often confused why Disney is brought up, like yeah they have don’t bad or terrible decisions. But any companies has that problem. Which is were some agreements that people say indi is the future. But given the context, indi is rising but not “the future” just a memo that says people want more original or at list diverse art. But they mostly use the popular ones as examples which didn’t help the argument.
I know this is 11 days old and this comment will be ignored, but it’s probably best because what I’m about to say is controversial. I think Indie Gaming has a better chance at high success than Indie Animation. When it comes to Indie Gaming, there are multiple counts of success, & all major players in the industry include them. When it comes to Indie Animation, only RU-vid & Amazon Prime include them, & they’re not even owned by one of the five major Hollywood studios. Don’t hate me please, this is just my honest opinion.
@@guyuser81honestly you do have a point. Heck Minecraft started as indie but soon became a franchise with its own movie coming out, same with Fnaf to. India games also somewhat been around.
@@jkdjjj at least Disney doesn’t cancel things for tax write off. They’re just going through a creative rut right now. They just need another hit to make a comeback.
@@jkdjjj Again, Disney is just going through a creative rut right now. They just need to have another hit to make a comeback. All companies whenever, gaming or animation, go through ruts. It’s inevitable, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make a comeback.
I like that this wasn't really an argument about if their criticisms were wrong but rather about selective attention. Speaking of, love that you acknowledged AVA, eddsworld, asdfmovie and etc as worthy indie animation too. Tbf, anything animated and continuing is basically indie animation. Its just independent animation lol. TADC and Lackadaisy and hazbin only get focused more cos they look like serialised tv shows from the 2000s or early 2010s. But cartoons dont need to look like CN or Disney Channel to be cartoons, else what'll be the point of saying they beaten Disney or other companies (Again, Alan Becker literally is doing high quality vids with stickfigures, way before the "I have Michael as a VA" indie cartoons)
@@andrewharris1344 lol yh they're amazing. Even tho he gets millions of views,I still feel like he should be associated with popular indie animation . (Also Alan Becker Vs Alex Banner, his evil doppelganger)
i wish more of these indie animation video went down the rabbit hole of object shows, in which its full of creative people that might make their own indie animation shows (that AREN'T like dream island too even!)
Object shows are a niche genre of animation so if people talk about Object shows in a video like this majority of people are not going to know what that is and would only have people that have been in the Object show community.
@@helpfulplaylists3933 i mean it in a way of "down the rabbit hole" type of video, like explaining everything about it... because it is a huge rabbithole
To tell y'all the truth... in recent years, object shows have gotten the same level of moderate popularity as Pencilmation, Homestar Runner, Bugbo, asdfmovie, The Music Freaks and that Mugman cartoon. Even if these animated shows did have a impact and still have a bunch load of fans, they sadly been overshadowed by Helluva Boss, GLITCH and Lackadaisy in the animation community. (I'll admit tho... that really sucks. Because I love Animatic Battle, It's Time For The and, the OG object show, BFDI, as well as most of the others I mentioned.)
The people that made Inanimate Insanity actually also made this short indie cartoon called Uneven Evan that's honestly rlly underrated and I'd highly recommend checking it out. I hope Adam makes more episodes of it in the future! :D
Of all the Indie Animations you mention, I recommend adding Dungeon Flippers to the list as well. I watched the pilot just the other day and now, I'm hungry for more content from their channel
Same applies to RU-vid for how they’re starting to disrespect animation for COPPA this system isn’t working, the animation guild has to strike at some point to also mention RU-vid to stop “RU-vid kids” and FTC needs to stop too
I think people who like indie animation don’t realize that the most popular ones aren’t the most grassroots kind and aren’t that different from Disney. To me, indie animation is those short videos you find on RU-vid that some rando animated for no reason other than the fact they wanted to.
9:18 thank you for mentioning Wander over yonder that was genuinely an underrated show that came out at a bad time. Another show was Mao Mao from Cartoon Network that also got cut at season 2 when the plot was just starting to kick off.
yall remember all the "Dreamworks and everthing else has better villains than Disney" trend from the beginnings of 2023? I think people find hating on big and rich companies/people something cool and different. And we all know what that big company is, Disney ofc. Amazing video btw
@@nova_3000_ honestly all these company vs company comparisons are getting tiring what happened to just liking something and leaving it. Or liking both equally.
I swear. These RU-vidrs sound like man children when they talk about indie animation when they say “INDE ANIMATION HAS BURIED DISNEY !!!!!!” I wonder how they feel about that now after inside out 2 made a lot of money at the box office.💀
Let me tell ya something, with the amount of people who went to see Inside Out 2, I was hoping that scene with the animation desks would spark some kind of curiosity in people about how classic hand drawn animation was done, but instead, not only did they not animate anything in that scene, it was more like storyboarding, they used the reality distortion lens like how people would use A.I. to turn doodles into art, and on top of everything, what looked like a pillow fight party in the trailers turned out to be the destruction of the studio, showing how much the people working on the film don’t respect hand drawn animation, as if it’s something to be ignored at best, to something to be destroyed at worst, just like Apple’s Crush ad.
I feel it’s mostly combination of fuck big corporations, and new toy syndrome. Where whenever a indie developer makes a game, show, etc it’s claimed as the greatest most flawless thing ever and so much better then whatever billion dollar company their comparing it to. Without realizing that those corporations work differently then a small dev team. I don’t hate Indie I like: hazbin, helluva, lackadaisy, Rwby, and find tadc okay, I also agree the bigger companies do need to put more creative effort in their live action and animated movies with more consistence . But let’s not say their destroying everything
Took the words right out of my mouth. Other than the swearing. Hollywood is at its most vulnerable right now and the last thing it needs is more backlash. It's basically bullying or kicking someone when they're down.
@@MagicSpectrum i honestly wonder how people would judge shows like tadc to the inside out 2 movie. It kinda feels like they only go for the recent bad films but not the good ones. Like no one’s comparing indie to puss and boots 2 or spider verse.
Rooster Teeth was practically Glitch Productions before Glitch Productions, well, at least until they started flushing themselves down the toilet. TADC wishes it could leave the same mark on Internet culture as Red vs Blue and RWBY did.
well, we need to give new indie animation the chance to leave the impact before waxing about the goood old days. And looking at it now, it seems like that got a hell of a start
I’m pretty sure That RT lost all indie animation creed when they did all those Justice League x RWBY movies. You don’t see Glitch teaming up with WB to make the Joker goes to The Amazing Digital Circus.
@@Ihartwalrusguy Rooster teeth was 21 years old, and Glitch is 7 years old. It can still happen you never know. Every company or independent group has their Rocky starts, golden years, and desperate years.
People didn't realize Disney can also release their stuff on youtube. The entire first season of gravity falls is on youtube for free now, and I suspect we'll only be seeing more now that they've caught on.
@@jonathanwade3882Yeah Puss in boots 2 was good, but turning it into a way to start a two sided culture war was unnecessary. What happened to just liking something and leaving it not everything needs a comparison to justify liking it. But drama bring views so what do I know.
@@Zebra_fandomfella03 it’s crazy how fickle some reviewers can be that if some company makes one good thing it’s framed as the “next gold standard”. While completely ignoring the previous goods and bad of itself and its competitors. What’s wrong with just saying something is good and leave it there not everything good needs to be a cultural phenomenon. And just wait until the next hot thing comes out then that becomes the “Next gold standard”.
You know I originally wanted to make my own animated series but now…..I don’t even wanna go near the animation community it’s too chaotic and I kinda lost passion, I think I’ll just stick to game development….
Personally, I wouldn't call skibidi toilet an indie show as in relating it to other indie shows as in digital circus or hellava boss Edit: No, I'm not saying skibidi toilet is bad I'm just saying that it doesn't really fall into the Category that digital circus hellvu boss is in tbh. And no I'm not saying that skibidi toilet is not indie I'm saying I wouldn't relate/compare it to other indie shows like hellva boss tadc murder drones etc (I'm not ranging it by effort or goodness btw)
Yeah but it doesn’t trending on twitter, or have 3d animation like TADC or MD or gore and edgy violence/humor, or enough lore bait for theorist. So some might see as having less quality or cultural importance I guess. That sounds like most of logic when people online determining when a show is good I guess. It’s the same with animator Alan who made animation vs animator fights. They were seen but never heard from it again which sucks.
I kinda like this! Especially with the example sped up. Funny helium! How hilarious, but yeah, perfect and flawful! Although, I like how you addressed the flaws

Homestar Runner and Eddsworld, yeah, they do deserve more respect...... Skibidi Toilet? The fúck is wrong with you kiddo, like that isn't even an "Indie Animation" it's just pure dumbass brainrot. And I'm not saying this cause I'm a "hAtEr" or whatever, it literally is just pure brainrot.
even though i'm not sure how relevant this is to the topic, i feel like a lot of people just turn their brains off when it comes to indie animation, overlooking details and aspects and just blindly taking whatever's given to them, at least for the most part. personally i'm not a fan of GLITCH productions, i don't really like their characters or their stories, but i feel like, even if you like these shows, there are a bunch of things that happen that are really questionable in their most popular shows, but it feels like they get consumed uncritically regardless. at least for the most part. it's just this, if i share my opinion, every now and then i get someone willing to discuss things and they give me a new perspective that i can respect and appreciate. most of the time i'm given the most arbitrary reasons as to why these shows are good and then i get called a bad person for disliking them - and not on twitter, it's like i made a point other people can't dispute and then get mad at me for pointing out genuine flaws these shows have like they're suddenly insecure for being a fan of them. don't get me wrong, i'm glad that indie animation is giving some much-needed competition, and i honestly wish i could enjoy these shows as much as so many others seem to, but i feel like there's a lot of bias when it comes to this, and it's what leads to misconceptions about indie animation and outrageous takes that i'm thankful this video addresses since i feel like there's a lot of bias and lack of critical thinking driving these points forward. too much, if you ask me.
I def agree with you and hell I’m a glitch fan. Most of the people doing the Disney vs indie thing just wanna focus on the big ones everyone knows leaving other great indie projects in the dark like Hugo’s mind palace the earth guy and atlas and the stars. And if tadc weren’t as popular you know some of the people singing its praises wouldn’t care and that just makes me mad.
@@redactedinfo8557 I agree I feel indie gets more leniency from reviewers because “ they have less money or people”, or “ there’s passion in this”. As if all Disney and WB employees are overworked or passionless. I just feel people make big claims but are very selective and put them against the weakest links. To get there point across.
I agree I feel indie tends to get free passes more then people care to admit. Like I don’t think TADC is a masterpiece it’s fine. However it feels no one criticizes it. Which makes it weird when it seems I’m the only one not in love with it.
17:05 I haven’t seen anyone bring this up so I’m gonna do it. Off the top of my head, focusing on animation: MLM: Voltron, Kipo, Yuri On Ice, The Hollow, Helava Boss WLW: RWBY, Adventure Time, OK KO, Steven Universe, Owl House, Harley Quinn, Disenchantment, She Ra, Madoka, Kill La Kill, Camp Cretaceous, Bloom Into You, Korra, Hailey’s On It, In Love With the Villainess, Loud House Mix of both: Hazbin (Most have a mix, but this is the only one off the top of my head where it features major characters and is shown explicitly, unlike, say, OK KO where it’s easy to miss Boxman and Venomous’s relationship while Enid and Red Action’s is much more explicit)
So Disney & Pixar's ORIGINAL Movies Animated Are failing making more Sequels but So are the RIVALS: DreamWorks Sony and Illumination, since their biggest Recent and Upcoming Animated films are still Sequels and Adaptations such as Kung Fu Panda 4, The Garfield Movie, Despicable Me 4, Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 and Beyond the Spider-Verse, also it's kind of ironic that Elemental still became the Highest-Grossing ORIGINAL animated film from ANY STUDIO Since Coco in 2017.
To @TubbybloxianRU-vid, I wanna say I'm glad to find someone who has similar views and opinions on this "Indie Animation vs. Hollywood" thing. Thanks for this video bro (even though I don’t know you). If you see this, you can reply on what I mean.
I agree. This "Indie Animation vs Hollywood" thing is stupid. I keep seeing these videos that to me read like, "Why you should give up on Hollywood Now!" or "Why Indie Animation is perfect in every single way while Hollywood can rot in the dirt". Especially with how vulnerable Hollywood is right now.
@@LightningAdrian I’m tired of it always being a competition. Then when it is many frame it as a one sided massacre. Without acknowledging the pros and cons of both.
Transformers Earthspark got so fucked over man. Paramount never did any advertising for it, and none of the big animation community channels ignored it for the most part

interstelar range comece mention!!1!11!!1!1! automaticly gud indie animation video esay!!! but seriously, this actually did open up an eye on how we should talk about the landscape of indie animation. Instead of only hailing the few popular ones in their own pedestal, we should make room for other aspiring artists who hope to scale these heights. now uhh, you should make video on hyuns dojo, more specifically how its actively raising an entire generation of animators.
It sucks seeing people use indie animation as a stepping stone to just shit on bad media. I want to enjoy good art, I don't want to sit around shitting on things because being angry isn't fun. This video rules, man. Thanks for saying the shit I've been saying for a while yet you put it into words better than I can. And I love how you sped up everyone's voices to sound like Simon because they all really do sound like Melvins talking high and mighty over people just making good art. They don't care about art, they just wanna see the good popular thing destroy the bad popular thing and they wanna make money talking about the popular thing because content creator brainrot exists.
Yeah I’m tired of everything that gets popular being seen as destroying the big corporations. Why not just say you like it and leave it their. And hearing how some praise these shows as the “ New gold standard” or treat them like the second coming of Christ, sounds kinda pretentious to me.

Can I simply say that this is the video that I REALLY needed it? Say what you will about Wish but I personally think it is charming and lovely, which I will be seeing soon again, and I will forever keep on defending it. The fact that these people are using the success of The Amazing Digital Circus as an excuse to diss Disney, especially Wish, is nothing short of disgusting to me. As in, I don't personally think that GLITCH and Gooseworx intentionally wanted to rub Disney the wrong way as all they wanted to do is to make entertaining quality.
I find Wish uninteressing and without any (positive) charm, but I do find it stupid to use indie shows to get against Disney. It's like people saying that GLITCH's Mr. Puzzles' villain song was ON THE SAME LEVEL AS BE PREPARED OR F*CKING HELLFIRE, the music is good, mind you, but nowhere near that level
The criticism of Disney and other studios isn’t about the quality of their animated movies or shows; it’s how they treat their animators. Indie is absolutely deserving of its praise.
In my opinion, digital circus dont deserve its sucess. There is many other indie and non indie series that truly deserve more. I dont mean that tadc is bad, but i think its really overhyped.
It just came out at a good time. It came out where everyone's eyes were at indie animation so it didn't matter the quality as long as it proved indie animation can stand a chance against mainstream companies. I imagine once that calms down. people will stop over hyping it...
Paying $35 for one second sounds like a lot (Especially since you don't animate the whole scene, you animate each other, you know, animation is teamwork) At least from what I learned in the case of animation, seriously, if people animated the entire frame (Like in the animation of Spinder-man: Universe, it would be a problem, but this is about the standard animation process, unfortunately, such accusations were easy to outrage people because people don't know the animation process)
@@IAARPOTI It's standard to say "One second of animation for a few dollars", they won't say that for animation sketches, you don't really see that, it's said that way and the process works as I mentioned earlier
most of your mentions are not even considered animated series such as skibiti toilet, adbf movie, bugbo, animator vs animation, monster lab, noxp asdbf movie is an skit series, skibity toilet is just brainrot for kids with nothing in it, bugbo is an semi horror series, animation vs animator is not consideret a series since each video is self contained, monster lab again to short to be considered a series, noxp are just a bunch of shorts like chikn nuggit but regadless i agree with most of your point
I wouldn’t put all the blame on him. It’s mostly just a conglomerate of media analysts wanting to see big company get defeated by little company. It’s like an IRL underdog story. I find this culture war stupid and people do be taking it out of proportion, then don’t want to acknowledge the flaws of some indie shows and Success of some current Disney and WB shows and movie. Because big company always evil.
@@denysvision yes most big companies do give animation the short end of the stick. But indie animation isn’t some place with the perfect work environment or a magical cure all that’s going to fix these issue. And even if Disney and WB go down in flames due to indie then what? Besides it’s not like there aren’t talented and dedicated people in those companies, or can’t make good films anymore they just need consistency.
