Everything wrong with my Classic Mini.

Well it really hasnt been the best week for cars the week and top of the list is my Classic mini. Not only has it needed a new alternator, spark plugs, wires and connectors.....now I've found that the flywheel and clutch seem to have been incorrectly fitted.
This video covers some of the more basic issues were going to have to fix. But before we get that far we're going to have to remove the engine! The joys of classic mini ownership!

I had a similar problem with a car I purchased. I was heartbroken and it got me very stressed out but took on the challenge of sorting the issues. Again I had very little knowledge with engine repairs and had to learn as I went. I can say I found the whole experience very rewarding in the end. I learned so much and now know my car inside out. With regards to upgrades and mods, put in the best you can afford now to bring the car to a standard you can use and be happy with.

We've all purchased something polished that turns out to be a bit of a 💩. In my case it needed new drivers flitch panel, passenger floor panel, sill, both wings and front....oh and front wheel bearings, rear shoes (handbrake actuator was seized). Apparently it had an 'MoT'....the previous seller obviously knew the Tester. The previous owner was very good at using sheets of fibreglass and Waxoyling it. Wouldn't have known anything about it had I not decided to renew the underseal and put a screwdriver right through the car! Still, all done now, a fair few pennies spent...but worth it!

Take the bonnet off and lift the engine out, get yourself an Allegro, Ital or Metro 1.3 engine, check its clutch before you drop it in, if you want to make it a bit spicier put in a high lift cam and a set of Weber's with a manifold while the new engine is out. Ive been a mechanic for over 35 years, put in new bottom engine mountings as the oil gets on them and softens them, also replacing the top engine stabilizers rubbers on the dog bone it really helps to tighten it up, check your front sub frame bushes too while the engines out. Don't forget to grease your rear swinging arms or the bushes will wear.

I have got a MED lightened flywheel in mine does make a difference with the rev hang and acceleration. The biggest improvement though is having the clutch and flywheel all balanced that would be the main thing I would do, it completely transforms the drive and just makes the revs super smooth.

I had the same-ish. Bought a pretty mini with 12 months MOT (I know minis but everything was well hidden - who would respray over rot 🤦‍♂️), it seemed great but EVERYTHING was bodged. It broke down every time I went out. 7 years later, total rebuild(nearly finished)! Check every thing for bodges! Lots of pretty filler and paint over rot, everything was cross treaded, wires everywhere. Can I ask, what had happened to the bolt that should hold the clutch on? Good luck 👍

I think it basically came loos and the locking washer slipped. I could be completely wrong but I've read that you really need to overtighten the nut past it's recommended torque.

I’ve just fitted one…by the book…new bolt, loctite, 150nm and knock in the lock tabs, I’d guess they’d skipped at least one of these steps. (FYI strangely my first clutch in 30 years of mini ownership…I unbolted or welded every other part multiple times 🤣)

Hi from NZ i had the same problem but on an A not A+ engine the locktab with the lugs came undone and the flywheel etc all came off mine at 100Kmh smashed everything including the wok cause was the locktab probably had not been fully located into the crankshaft therefore came loose easily i had torqued it to the specifications required after a oil seal fix my crankshaft tail was not looking good like yours, but with a word with a mini guru, the way i went was: check that the lock tab slides into the crankshaft keyway easily (a file is required) then clean up the end of the crankshaft bolt it all up DO NOT use a torque wrench to tighten the nut into the end of the crankshaft USE a socket and a torsion bar and a piece of pipe 1 to 2 Metres long and crank it up super tight i have thei this and still super strong no play everything is good have done many Km and it is a quick 1310cc best of luck mate.

First time watching your videos. but I’ve owned a Mini for 15+ years. Pulling the engine on a mini is super easy. I personally would be cautious with your mods. Too extreme and it’ll be rubbish to drive on the road in normal traffic… super light flywheel will mean you’ll need to rev it so hard and ride the clutch to pull away and will become tiresome very quickly. A well balanced bottom end with a modified head and Cam is your best way forward. Talk to a specialist like Minisport, Mini Spares etc and they will help guide you
@MrJoshuaSivarajah

HI, i did loads of mini clutches in the 70s / 80s, the big washer was put in wrong way round the lugs are offset so is the slot in the crank, the nut comes loose then wears the crank, thats why its been welded up, bodged up, i fitted a metro VP engine in my mini GT, as for mods front sub frame, drill a hole straight through sub frame mounts, rubber as well into body then put a nut and bolt in seal it this will stop you ripping frame mounts rubbers from the body, David Visard did a great book on how to mod your mini, i got one from 1978 motor show,
