Old houses actually do make noise without any human interaction. Old houses are typically made of wood and wood shrinks in the cold and swells in the heat. This is why during a really swampy summer you might have trouble getting your closet door shut. The sounds you hear are typically creaks and pops. Strong enough wind also puts pressure on old houses and makes them groan and shift. It's kinda cool. Like the house is alive. (^o^)

So I asked for a Ouija board -- the mass-produced, cardboard-and-plastic Parker Brothers version -- as a Christmas gift, so that I could test out this whole "ideomotor effect."
