0:45 "Look at mid levels for rotation and increase the PRF" might sound like technobabble but it's factually correct. Mid-level updraft rotation in a supercell is one of the first signs of a potentially developing tornado, so it would make sense that Jo would want the radar scanning for rotation in that particular area of the storm. PRF (pulse repetition frequency) is a real Doppler radar term, it's the rate at which radar pulses are transmitted. When a supercell thunderstorm is close to the radar dish (as depicted in this scene), the radar would need to have its PRF increased in order to receive accurate wind velocity and rotation data.

@@kbanghart The problem with an overpass is what they call the venturi effect. As the wind get channelled under the overpass because the space underneath narrows slightly (usually) it causes the wind speed(or pressure) to increase and be even more dangerous as a result.

Yeah, that overpass bit certainly didn't age very well. During the May 3rd, 1999 tornado outbreak, not too long after Twister first came out, there were three overpasses in Oklahoma that got hit by tornadoes, two by the monster Bridge Creek-Moore F5, and another by an F2 or F3 tornado along I-35 in Payne County, with, sadly, one person being killed at each one. The people who sheltered underneath them and survived (namely at Shields Boulevard in Moore) suffered some REALLY gruesome injuries from flying debris. Yeah, you can see why it's strongly discouraged nowadays...
@swissirish1
@swissirish1 4 года назад
In 1996, hiding under an overpass wasn't generally known to be a bad idea. A news team famously rode out the F5 Andover KS tornado in 1991 under one (though the tornado largely missed them) and it went nationwide. It wasn't until the F5 Moore OK tornado when people were killed heeding that faulty knowledge that people became largely aware of an overpass being a horrible shelter.

In the end when the F5 didn't take the house was based on a true event where an F5 destroyed a hell of a lot of crap but the house still stood. Also the scene of the inside of the F5 was from a farmer who survived the inside of the tornado and told people what it looks like inside. For Sin 57 he says the storm chasers should know they aren't using a safe shelter (the bridge), but this movie came out in 1996, one year before the TV crew survived a tornado in Kansas by hiding under an overpass. So the characters in this movie wouldnt know that. The myth that bridges are safe during tornadoes led to overpass-related deaths during the 1999 Bridge Creek - Moore Tornado, which hit three freeway overpasses directly, killing one person at each. This is when hiding under an overpass was finally deemed not just unsafe, but the worst place to go.

Sunny skies and then the tornado is on the front end of the supercell 2) A tornado is rated as an F0-F5 based on DAMAGE, not SIZE. @@indy_go_blue6048 It estimates the wind speed based on the damage. I actually took notes of this video to see if you actually did your research before making your claims. I can accurately back this up because I happen to be a Meteorologist and went storm chasing last summer. Sin 1 - That is impressive that you found that out. Sin 11 - Well they have the right to do that considering that the National Severe Storm Laboratory doesn't exist, so no one will take them seriously. Sin 20 - Why wasn't this piece of 25th century technology used when I went storm chasing last summer if it exists in 1996?! Because if there is, I want it! Sin 23 - Plus the warning time is actually 13 minutes, so you want to do all of this just to add 2 more minutes to that? That seems like a waste of time because 2 minutes isn't going to save any additional lives. Sin 24 - again, I want this technology! Sin 30 - Well the Weather Channel are more in for the profit instead of the science, yet they give the most scientific research since they have vehicles that can actually survive a tornado hitting said vehicles. Sin 36 - Storm chasers have additional persons on hand, just in case shit like this happens, because it does happen. Like for example, the vans that we used got decimated in a softball sized hail storm, and we were on the road the next morning. Sin 37 - Agreed. That storm damage was a overnight rush job and we paid a shit ton of money to get it fixed. Sin 42 - You do realize all of that technology was outdated 20 years before this movie was even released right? Sin 43 - Or radar?! Sin 45 - You are right about that one, sadly. Sin 46 - The name that we gave them were "booby clouds". That is not a joke, that is 100% legit. Sin 51 - or a bunch of chasers begging for the damn thing to touch the fucking ground. (Yes that annoyed me big-time) Sin 57 - Yeah, the Venturi effect would force anyone out of that bridge and die a worse death than normal. Sin 63 - There is a course for that. It's a Radar and Remote Sensing Lab that the NWS is requiring all Meteorology majors take. Sin 69 - "Too early for protagonists to die" cliche Sin 71 - Because that's how I reacted when I got back from the trip. You try living on Fast food and gas station snacks for three weeks straight. I couldn't eat at a McDonalds for several months without puking. Sin 74 - I know where this would be heading if we were in charge. "Get the fuck out of here, you dumbasses!" Sin 81 - For once, there's some realism in this movie. Sin 86 - You'd be surprised how quickly tornadoes last. Sin 95 - Plus, they should already be aware of it even if it formed quickly, because the NWS usually gives warning about 13 minutes before it can form. That gives them enough time to high tail themselves out of that place. Sin 102 - Unless you believe in that dumbass conspiracy theories that Kevin Martin gives out, you should never do that, ever. Yeah, there was no way that I was ever going to leave out the biggest troll ever. Sin 112 - Agreed Sin 114 - I wish... Sin 117 - Unless the amount of tornadoes that Twister had was 355, then no records have been broken here. Sin 118 - Actually you can stop tornadoes by blowing a fan at it. I know that this is overdramatic, but in a study that I did to see how tornadoes can fail, it seems like that could happen. Sin 121 - Actually tornadoes can form from a single cloud when the sky is clear all around. Sin 122 - It didn't work because it's a case of "plan to end movie early doesn't work" cliche. In reality, tornadoes do suck debris upwards. So let's say that this technology does exist (which I still want), then assuming that you know the exact path that the tornado is going to take, it should work. Sin 125 - I came to that very same conclusion. Sin 128 - That scene helped ruin the movie when I saw it with my family cause I just saying "bullshit" at it. There's no way that that could be that accurate in any situation involving a tornado. Sin 141 - They should already be dead, so it doesn't matter if they run or not. Sin 144 - THANK YOU!! Sins 9, 20, 22, 32, 58, 68, 84, 87, 96, 106, and 140 - The director thinks that the audience is stupid. Overall, you guys did pretty well. Just make sure when you do your sins video for "Into The Storm" that you do a little more research on these phenomena.

***** No. They are two separate entities (and both real). Google NSSL.
@tapests
@tapests 9 лет назад
***** Okay, I will admit I was wrong and that the NSSL does exist, and their goal is to collect data as a way to improve the accuracy and lead time of severe thunderstorms; however they don't give out warnings (That's the national weather service's job), and they don't dispatch storm chasers to accomplish these goals. They take information that was given by private storm chasers like the team that I was on, and they use archive data to improve forecasting techniques.
@leisulin
@leisulin 9 лет назад

You could have taken sins off for 3 funny lines; 1) "Trust me. Rabbit is good. Rabbit is wise." and; 2) "Find this road. It's like 'Bob's road'." and; 3) "Cow. Another cow. Actually, I think that's the same one."

How about this one? Aunt Meg: "OK, I'll go to the hospital, but I'm gonna drive myself." Rabbit: "Honey, your car is in a tree around the corner." Classic😂

Most of the tornadoes in this were actually pretty damned good. The thing that broke the suspension of disbelief was the EF-5 at the end. The actual twister was incredible. The way the protagonists dance with it at knife-fight distance isn't. As you said, they should have been dead 5 separate times they were messing around with this EF-5. And then it just... dissolves. Big tornadoes don't just "go away." They rope out, and the rope stage can actually be more powerful than the wedge stage! Tightening circulation, increasing rotation velocity. And yeah. The scene with the pipes was probably the worst scene of the entire movie. EF-5 tornadoes are not gentle with their victims. "Violently dismembered" is the norm. "Granular human remains" is not uncommon either. And this thing was *filled with debris.* Not a fun thing to be pummeled by 2x4s going 160+ mph, not to mention all those nice sharp farm implements they showed one scene earlier!

Well said. You know what you’re talking about! They needed more consultants that knew the storms better.

@@JenMarAnnRei Thank you! I think they had, but the entire EF-5 twister was run on Rule of Drama rather than accurate physics. Not hardly the first or last time that Hollywood's done that - as a filmmaker once told me, they're not trying to teach physics to the audience, they're trying to tell a story, and EVERYTHING is going to be a part of that story physics or none. Bouncing tanker trucks whose explosions the protagonists casually drive right through, whole houses for the protagonists to drive through, combine harvesters weighing as much as train engines tossed hundreds of yards... EF-5s do weird things, but not THAT weird. Even the movie *Gravity,* whose director WANTED to use accurate physics, was forced to use Hollywood Physics instead when he realized 2/3rds of the dialogue were the characters giving physics lessons!

Not to mention the debris would’ve destroyed them instantly, then they get in the barn and instantly it starts impaling the door.

Twister is one of my all time favorite movies. It’s the reason I love tornados and of course Van Halen is my third favorite band. But yeah, there are some inaccuracies like how you mentioned there weren’t tornado alerts until 1974. But there are also many other mistakes. 1.) In the opening scene the TV reporter wouldn’t have known it was an F5 because Dr. Ted Fujita hadn’t created the Fujita Scale until 1971. 2.) The first tornado the team encounters started as an F1 and made it to F2 intensity and an F2 wouldn’t be able to destroy an entire barn like that. It’d only rip doors off, shatter windows and rip the roof off. 3.) Another mistake with that same tornado when they were about to go under the bridge, the tornado was like 10 feet away from them and how tf were they not getting hit with debris? They would’ve gotten hit at least a few times. 3.) The F3 on the hill scene was inaccurate because a tornado doesn’t form and dissipate that quickly. It takes a couple minutes for a tornado to do such. 4.) The F5 that picked up the cemi truck would’ve also picked up their truck as well if it was able to fly over them. 5.) The scene where they anchor themselves to the pipes are the most inaccurate because one, they’d be getting hit with debris and two, it does not matter that those pipes go 30 feet down, you’d be ripped from them either way, the leather straps going with you. 6.) When the F5 dissipated it was inaccurate because it would’ve weakened and then gone back up into the air. So those are what I noticed. The movie’s still an all time favorite though no matter what. Also, Van Halen broke up because Eddie Van Halen, the guitarist died on October 6th, 2020 due to cancer and so the band never came back after. Just pointing that out.
