Finally a charging data logger?

Hi HWCave, thank you for all your great content! I wonder if you could please help guide me with a firmware update for the TC66. Mine came with v1.12 but I believe we are now up to v1.18

Thank you for the video.. Is there any recommendations for usb type-c wattage meters to test the wattage output from wall charger?
@TheHWcave
@TheHWcave 2 года назад
The TC66C does this one the main screen. You can see it right in the first 20 seconds of the video. The wattage is shown in purple. There are other screens on the TC66C that show that information as well (always in purple) and it is reported over the remote control interface.

Again, a great detailed technical video, thx. I have a couple more of these (larger screen) USB meters, a Qway U2 and an FNB38 (can't help myself) and they do have the capability of recording the USB-C PD protocol. Are you planning to explore this aspect of these very useful devices?

Hi Paul, not really. I have too many USB testers already and while it would be fun, I can't afford buying gear just for reviews. It has to fill a gap in my lab first. I hope you understand.

I'm wondering about Type-C DAC Dongles, can they be powered by external supply like 5v from powerbank then connect audio lines from a music player LeftAudio/RightAudion & Ground) with bad quality then pass it to that Type-C DAC Dongle's D+/D- powered by battery (if possible) then gets a very good quality sounds from the Type-C DAC?

Sorry, not having any DAC dongle I can't answer this.

What can you recommend to be able to analyse usb-c data and power exchange? Something that ie shows that voltage negotiation is done. I have not seen something like this like an usb-c sniffer

A quick google reveals that there are professional USB PD Protocol analyzers out there but rather expensive.

Is the TC64 sufficient to test Type-C power supplies ?
@TheHWcave
@TheHWcave 3 года назад
Well, as always, the answer is "it depends". In this case it depends on what you are testing. The TC64 can only measure current in one direction, so you may need to rewire the setup. It will be fine if you are measuring voltages, currents and power. If you are exploring charger and PD protocols, I think it is more limited in that respect, but I have not read the specs of the TC64

So digits are meaningless without the knowlegde of the resolution as I understand you right ? Thanks for that TOP video !
@TheHWcave
@TheHWcave 3 года назад
Yes, absolutely. If you see lots of digits, there is always that question: Is this technically justified or just eye-candy for trying to impress. In the TC66 case it is actually justified. I am using this tester now for all sorts of non-USB measurements because in its limited range (DC 0..30V 0..5A) it is almost as good as my Agilent 34401A 6.5 digit bench meter. Certainly better than any of my other hand-held multi-meters. Plus you have recording and remote access, all for less than $30.

If I think about it remembers me what my professor said to the students. Don´t write all digits from the measurement If the accuracy ends at 2 digits behind the comma all other digits are meaningless. I don´t know why but I don´t like the percent and digits notation when you can write it down in Volts+-millivolts it´s better to read in my opinion. What do you think about it ?

@@TheHWcave According to the range, this should be safe to use to record the 12V battery in my car for 24 hours (1 min intervals). Correct? I would need a 5V source, I'm thinking about using a power bank for that, assuming it will not go to sleep with such low power draw.

@Telectronics: Both you and your prof are right in that most of the time, the extra digits are not needed. If I charge something on USB, often all I care about is whether a decent current flows and the voltage is about right. In that case, I would ignore the fraction part completely and just look at the digits before the decimal point. All I want to see is 5V -something and 1A-something. But there are a few instances when a higher resolution is useful. For example a voltage or current that keeps slowly creeping up or down when it is supposed to be stable may indicate something is wrong (e.g. a temperature runaway). More digits enable spotting this earlier. Another case may be capacity or energy measurements as these sum many measurements over a long time, so even tiny errors accumulate. As to the format. In the TC66 case for example the offset error could indeed be expressed as a Volts +- 2mV statement but that would not work for the gain error. Say if for example the gain is supposed to be 1 but its really 0.99, then 1V would show as 0.99V and 10V as 9.9. The absolute error at 1V is 10mV and for 10V is 100mV, which means a format of X volts +- Y mV won't be very helpful. But a statement of X Volt +- 1% would express the error exactly.

@@enihi Yes you can do this, but beware of getting the polarity wrong. It will kill the TC66. Also, if you record while the engine is running you may have spikes that exceed 30V. To be safe, use a 30V Z-diode across the TC66 USB-C and a 100mA fast fuse in line. Both my powerbanks (a XIAOMI and a Energizer) turn off after 30s with just the TC66C alone as load. You may have to add a small LED light to keep them on. Alternatively you may just use the 12V as power. Depends on what you want you want to investigate. If you suspect your car battery is slowly draining then of course using it to power the TC66 in addition would make it worse.
