Female chameleons will lay eggs even if they've never been with a male chameleon before. Without a laying bin your chameleon can become egg bound and die. This video will teach what you need to know to properly set up a laying bin and prepare for your female chameleon to safely lay her eggs.

Thank you so much for making this video , it was so helpful. My Chameleon laid her first clutch over the last week, Tuesday-Saturday. She laid 39 eggs that we found, I think we got them all. I was so nervous but she did great and now we know what we need to adjust. Definitely need to feed less and we might try adjusting her temp up a little bit!

My enclosure isn’t large enough for her plant and a laying bin, my question is should I just remove her plant (which is very full with lots of stems/leaves) & just put the laying bin inside her enclosure? I will put a stick down in there for her… I have her in a quiet room so she won’t be disturbed… I am not sure if she’s got eggs yet but I’m trying to make sure I am prepared! Your videos have helped me tremendously!! I cannot tell you how much I’ve learned from you, THANKS SO MUCH!!! 💕
@NeptunetheChameleon
@NeptunetheChameleon Год назад
Sounds like she could benefit from a larger enclosure so that she has room for her laying bin and having lots of plant coverage and sticks to climb on. Her laying bin doesn't have to be very big, a shoe box sized bin would work just fine. Thank You this video helped so much! I just got a female chame. Full knowing it was female. She layed her first clutch of eggs just about two months ago, she is already getting fat again, plus she feels very bumpy. Her colors haven't turned dark yet, but when she does shift they are in the gravid pattern and colors. She lightens up though. So I do not think she is ready to lay. She is always hungry; she seems to beg. I do hold back a little though. Still getting a good bug set up though, so I don't run out of money running to the store.

Depends what size of enclosure you have, and if you own a solarmeter. If you have a 48" tall or smaller enclosure then I would recommend a 5.0. 10.0s typically put out too much UVB for a chameleon and the only way to make sure your UVI levels are safe is with a solarmeter. I would suggest watching my video on UVB: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5RVjgaLsWn8.html and checking out the chart in this link that shows the different UVI levels for different bulbs: chameleonacademy.com/chameleon-cage-set-up-replicating-the-sun/

I have a female panther named Rou Rou She's just 7 months old. Long story short. I adopted her at a very young age with MBD. She's over that but still has walking issues. Took her to vet because she was dropping from branches and didn't know why. Found out she was developing eggs. Took x-rays and saw them they were just the yolks yet. Vet gave me liquid calcium to make her stronger and help with shell formation. She's due to lay in mid Oct. She's my little sweet pea and doing everything in my power to make it easier on her. I have a big window box with a Star Jasmine in it she loves to climb. Lay bin is opposite side with sand/topsoil mix. my vet calls to check on her once a week. I will keep you all posted. =)

@NeptunetheChameleon
@NeptunetheChameleon 3 года назад
I would not recommned coconut fiber as a substrate for a chameleon under any circumstances :/ For your T5 fixture, check out Amazon, Light Your Reptiles, and Reptile Basics. Here are some other places: www.chameleonforums.com/sponsors/. Also, since your enclosure is 6ft tall you may want to consider getting a 10.0/12% so that you can get the correct UVI levels. The 5.0/6% is the recommendation for 4ft tall enclosures.

That really depends on the texture of your substrate and what your female prefers. Some are fine with substrate and others require a bin. I’d have a bin handy and pay super close attention to any signs that she might need to use a bin.

I think that the third one may be egg bound, but we did see her In a holes yesterday but she still looks big today so I don't believe that she laid eggs. Would it be possible for a chameleon to become egg bound with unlimited dirt at the bottom of their whole cage? Maybe she kept trying to dig in spots that where two hard?

It’s certainly possible if the conditions aren’t correct or she’s not strong enough to lay them.

Hello. My veiled chameleon looks 4ish months old. How early will they become gravid. We have done research since a week before we got her (3weeks) and we have watched a lot of your videos and she’s just not becoming more round. Can they be gravid without the colors or should we just wait to see the brown spots. She’s never been down to her laybin and I’m a little nervous. She slept low yesterday and has several ways to get down there but hasn’t gone yet. She’s still tiny though.

question... I just got my chameleon 3 days ago. store said she was a female, and maybe 6m old, they weren't sure as they only had her in the store for a few weeks... just noticed today she was digging a hole, without knowing what she was doing. I have a bioactive setup, that has about 6-8" of substrate. Thing is I may of startled her, as she stopped digging.. i being a Newby and hadn't researched egg laying.. nievely covered the hole up... now watching ur video after the fact.. what should I be doing now?

Omg! I just recently got a female veiled chameleon and in all of the research I did before hand nothing said anything about egg laying, so I didn't even think of it! She has bio soil in the bottom of her enclosure. Is there anything I should do for her?

I think it depends on what your substrate you use. Most keepers use washed play sand for their laying bins.

I just got her and the people we got her from said she was a little over a year old and they only had her for four months. Consider yourself VERY lucky she laid her eggs. She could have very easily gotten egg bound by not having a proper laying bin. So, I would recommend you do a few things moving forward: 1. Throw away the eggs 2. Get a laying bin set up and always leave it inside her enclosure 3. Do not leave your chameleon unattended outside of their enclosure and don’t fall asleep while they are outside of their cage 😅

Hi there! I have a male juvenile panther chameleon. I’ve had him for 3 weeks and he’s doing amazing! It’s my first time having a chameleon but I really think I’m doing a good job. The reason why I am contacting you is because Petco near me has a female panther chameleon that is over 1 year old. I’m almost positive that she is ready to lay eggs and they have her on sale for 50% off because no one wants her. I don’t think that I would know what to do it I got her during this time of her life, but I do know that she will die soon if she doesn’t get to lay her eggs. Would you be able to do anything about this to help me? I just feel so bad for her but I’d need help if I tried to help her. I really just don’t have the space. But I don’t want her to die. And my parents won’t let me get her knowing that she would need to see a vet ASAP.

My cage isn't that big for a tub like that would I be able to use like a shoe box?
@NeptunetheChameleon
@NeptunetheChameleon Год назад
No because the bin/box needs to be big enough for her to be able to dig down and lay her eggs. Should be at least 6” deep. You may consider getting her a bigger enclosure. The cage size recommendation for a chameleon is 24”x24”x48”.

Hello again. The wife noted something which I had'nt thought of TBH and that is - The egg laying bin (15" tall flower pot which is !0" wide) will be filled with wet (ish) sand for her but we also have a automatic misting system for both Arwen's and Ziggy's vivarium but we need to come up with a way that won't have the sand becoming saturated with water as the mister is tied into both enclosures and goes off x3 daily. Any ideas from yourself or any of your subscribers would be appreciated as this is a real head scratcher just now.
@NeptunetheChameleon
@NeptunetheChameleon 3 года назад
As mentioned at 12:41 you can drill holes in the bottom to help with drainage. Also there is such a thing of a laying bin that is too big. If it’s too big than she will be exerting more effort than what is needed. Hope this helps!!
@IainHamilton
@IainHamilton 3 года назад
Thanks! The way Arwen's growing I think she'll need a bigger vivarium (got one waiting in the wings for her) sooner rather than later. I'll need to watch this one again - never thought of drilling the holes TBH. Suprised the missus did'nt spot that one.
