What NOT to buy for your chameleon

Just because there is a picture of a chameleon on the box, does not mean you should get it for your chameleon. These are all things I would avoid buying for your chameleon.

I work at a pet store and the main reason I started working there was because I was so tired of how much false information on animals went on in the store, I am now the head of the petcare department and we have ditched the packets the send us and I have instructions for each animal and their care down to the last detail and we print them and give them to the customer for them. I have a lot of people now coming in and showing me photos of their reptiles to show me how good they’re doing and how much they’re loving them and it makes me so happy to see :)

This makes me so, so, so happy to hear! Thank you for doing what is best for these animals. If you’re looking for someone to review the care sheet you’ve made for a chameleon, I’d be happy to take a look and provide any feedback. Keep being awesome 👍🏻

Neptune the Chameleon I’ll send it to you through an Instagram DM and for a night light I use a low wattage ceramic heat bulb! Doesn’t produce the light but still provides him heat which he does need a little more of at night in my home!

Turns out she’s used almost everything you don’t recommend in this video. I’m glad I know this information now so we can work towards giving our new friend the best home possible 🙂

Same! My boyfriend had a chameleon before, that passed away due to an infected foot from losing a nail. The vet gave him a shot, but sadly he still died the next day. Anyways, we (mostly I because I’m the one who goes all out to take care of him) got a 3 year old male veiled chameleon from this girl who was basically on bed rest for two years after an injury and got him, but she’s starting school and wanted someone who had time to give him what he needs. Anyways, she gave me so much info since he’s my first, and he came with his WHOLE enclosure, vitamins, lights, misting, all that. However, I started doing a bunch of research Bc some days he’d look very pale. I also noticed random little white spots in places on him that are like, flaky. Almost like patches of peeling. His back feet also started to peel then I realized it was because his ankles were swelling!! I messaged her asking for answers on how to care for him Bc the internet scared me. She said those things were normal for him. Some days he was happy and bright, others pale and almost seeming sad or sick. She got him when he was already 1. I originally felt better based of what she said and my research, but furthering it, I’m now scared again. He’s had that double light since she got him, only fake plants in his cage, a two bug diet one of them being the worms, the vitamins that were NOT recommended, and I noticed he only hand feeds and even hand waters. I have to hand mist around him for a bit then he will come drink from the nozzle. Im officially worried about the little guy. 😔 I clearly need to redo everything about his environment. But with that being said. I still have some questions. I tried to get his exact schedule from her for feeding, misting, lighting, ect., but she said he didn’t really have one. So I’m sure he’s been stressed with the move and lack of scheduling. Also concerned be that all those things she said are normal for him, but when given the vitamins the back ankle swelling will go down. But they’re the vitamins in this video 😅 so I’m not wanting to continue that, but I’m unsure of a better way as of now. She’s also never taken him to a vet. I’d also like a recommendation on the best place to put his enclosure. Which is a 5ft tall 3ft wide screened enclosure. I didn’t intend for this much info to be dropped on your comment 😂 I was originally trying to basically just say SAME to having knowledge of all the wrong stuff. But I get worked up thinking about all that could be wrong 😅 so if you have any advice on how you guys handled your new baby! Or maybe someone will see this and be able to help. I’m just really wanting him to be okay. 🥲💖

Xandra Maddock Thanks for the feedback :) I showed the hornworms as an example, since I was saying there are plenty of other bugs you can feed a chameleon besides mealworms. Sorry I wasn’t able to go into more detail in this video. What would you suggest to replace bendy vines then? I cant use sticks found outside because a) most of the trees we have here are not reptile safe (lots of cedar for instance) and b) we now have a heat resistant parasite in our trees that has evolved to deal with half the province catching fire every summer, so even baking branches wont kill it if the wildfires cant manage that task. And im definitely not risking adding parasites to the ecosystem. Only found out because my vet has seen plenty of infected reptiles die due to this parasite because it doesnt respond well to meds.

All lights should be off for a chameleon at night.

This video is so helpful! I have had all the wrong thing! What bugs would you recommend for a baby chameleon? And about the lights is the uvb a night light and the heat one a day or do they need a separate light for night time?
@NeptunetheChameleon
@NeptunetheChameleon 2 года назад
All lights should be off, and they don't need a heat source at night. They benefit from a drop in temp at night. Here is my video on what bugs to feed: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9BAs2Os1XN8.html. Just avoid hornworms until they are older.

What if you have a Medium size cage how big of a lightbulb do you still need
@NeptunetheChameleon
@NeptunetheChameleon 3 года назад
You'll want a basking temp of around 80-85F which is usually achived by a 60-75W white basking bulb. And a T5 5.0 linear UVB bulb raised 48" from the bottom of the enclosure.

My linear uvb lamp broke and I had to buy a compact one as a temporary fix😭 idk if it’ll be bad for him or not
@NeptunetheChameleon
@NeptunetheChameleon Год назад
The compact one doesn't penetrate more then 2-4" into the enclosure. www.pangeareptile.com/?sca_ref=2120335.Dn9y03RxpN, thebiodude.com, and www.amazon.com/shop/neptunethechameleon?ref=cm_sw_sm_r_inf_pub_neptunethechameleon__mw_xIgR3xYBau3t4 all have UVB bulbs in stock. Code NEPTUNE10 saves you 10% off of your Pangea and Bio Dude orders.

I purchased two items that she mentioned in this video. The Chameleon kit and the Jungle Vine. I am wanting to get a chameleon soon because I have never had a reptile as a pet. I wish I would have known about all of this stuff before I bought the items. I could have saved myself some money.

What would I buy to replace the T5 high output if I'm not going to buy raptile bulbs
@NeptunetheChameleon
@NeptunetheChameleon 2 года назад
T5 UVB bulbs will need to be from reptile brands. I'd suggest a Reptisun 5.0 or Arcadia 6%.

So if I am using a 60W reptile heat bulb your saying I can use a regular house light bulb of the same wattage.
@NeptunetheChameleon
@NeptunetheChameleon 2 года назад
Potentially. You'll still need to measure the temperatures to make sure it is producing enough heat.

I have a question about live plants? If we go to Lowes or Walmart and buy live plants can we just put them in the enclosure or do we need to wash them? And Is the potting soil they come in okay or do we need to change the potting soil to an organic soil?

I have a small Cham that has a small cage is it ok if I use a compact fluorescent bulb (two separate lamps) is that ok the t5 at a little overkill and two big?
@NeptunetheChameleon
@NeptunetheChameleon 3 года назад
You will want to use the T5 5.0 and raise it so that it is 48" above the bottom of the enclosure until you can get a larger cage.

Thanks for responding. My chameleon doesn't eat the plastic plants but also just in case he does i do have a real plant thats native to where he's from. I also have a waterfall but i clean it every time i clean his cage which is every week.
