I’m 14 and have recently been getting into the punk/metal scene. You have some super rad clothes! just sewed my first patch. Thank you for putting this sick tutorial out!🤟🤟
Good luck dude! Im 15 now and I started my first patch jacket when I was 14 - it looks rad now and It only took me a year and a half! Im moving onto jeans now. Good luck, DIY or die!
Started mine today, I find it rather chill to just sit on the couch in my undies while sewing on patches and having a youtube video running in the background
@@nadatopalovic7685 it's a never ending process, you might have to repatch the crouch or other parts of the pants (saying from my experience since i have 2 kinda, one of them has just a few patches, but the crouch was fucked so I have to patch from time to time)
Yeah man, i was homeless starting at 15. Back then i used to have to patch the shit out of my pants, clothes in general really, and id make pants out of flannel shirts n stuff, i had no idea what crust pants were lol. i remember being so bummed when id have to throw away pants with so many memories, they would just get so torn apart and filthy and i didnt have a place to keep shit back then. glad times have changed though, and im sure glad i dont have to steal elmers glue to put my hair up lol. love this channel yo, keep it up. Also the fact that you can just buy studs online and i dont have to steal belts from ross to stud my shit is just amazing. . .the world can be beautiful i guess :)
Yoo, that's actually cool that you do it this way bc my mom taught me how she made her crusties and it is almost exactly the same way (shes a goth punk so i was kinda born into it 😂). Instead of folding the ends of the patches tho, she'd trim the edge so itd be clean and lightly lather the back of the patch with a liquid adhesive for cloth so it wouldnt fray. She also used actual thread rather than floss, but same idea basically. When i made mine, i accidentally sewed the patch and pants to my underwear bc i had no idea what i was doing until i asked her during a visit 😂
i diyed an embroidery hood with a nut jar and exactoknife, it was screw top with isn't the best but it's ok. the best thing to use to diy it is something that pops together though
I've been working on a vest. Realized last night that I had a bunch of old cross stitching frames. Made it sooo much easier to stitch the patches on w/o the fabric folding/twisting underneath
So I watched this video in January (it’s now October) and so far I made three pairs of jeans now I’m currently on my fourth because of this video. I highly recommend it to someone who wants to make patch pants. And yes they’re mst inspired 🤣
@@dexalk2688 i think he’s referring to when you’re done sewing and you have that extra bit of thread or whatever you’re using left instead of just tying it into a knot you get a lighter and burn it into the actual fabric itself so it’s intertwined and tougher than a simple knot.
I’ve had patches for a while but I never really get around to actually starting or finishing a project due to my depression. Usually my mom helped me put them on but lately I’ve had the urge to learn myself. Thanks for the dope tutorial man! Definitely gotta try that dental floss method soon.
One thing i discovered when i started using dental floss is that you don't need tie a knot at all. If you got a lighter with a concentrated flame (the sharp blue flames), you can melt the tips of the dental floss into a ball. Much faster than making a knot and so far it's been pretty strong aswell.
dude thanks so much for showing an in-depth zoom in of your pairs! I'm currently working on my first ever pair of patch pants and let me tell you, there's some GRUESOME stitching being done out there by people who just want to `wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am`-that shit. Making all of my own patches took like 25+ hours, currently on like hour 50+ of sowing them on etcetc. It's hard work and you can't speed it up or rush it, like you said. (also why do people want to do it fast? The joy of working hours on end on a pair that'll take you through anything is like the best part of this lol) Anyway, really loved the vid, thanks man :)
Yup me too, it took me about 7 months worth of freetime to make enough patches just to fill the front of my pants. And each patch takes like 30 minutes to sew, it isnt a quick process loool
Dude I love your tutorials. I'm not new to doing D.I.Y. stuff but I always learn some neat little trick that makes stuff easier from your vids like putting something in the pockets to make it easier to sew stuff on top. Kudos to you and I'm drinking an extra shot to your health :D
Before your fingertips start bleeding.. Use pliers to sew. That way you can use a bigger needle and thread the floss easier. A curved upholstery needle would work great.
Pro tip if you don’t care about stabbing yourself in the hand. You can just put your hand/arm in between the two layers of fabric you don’t want to sew together.
glad i watched this before jumping in, I figured I didn't need any help and I could just wing it but you had some killer tips and tricks here. thanks my dude
I am not using your bottle trick but folding patch edges have been helpful. And i have linked your video to people because visual presentation explain it better than my words in internet can.
Wicked video dude, I've been wanting to start getting my crusties on the go for a while but didn't really know where to start, this has been a huge help also loving how awesome your crusties look, I'd be happy with mine looking half as good as yours.
I have 2 pears of crust pants and to tell ya the idea of folding the patches is genius I cant believe I didnt think of that by the way your pants are sick 🤘🤘
i'm brazilian and i didn't find any brazilian video with this information you gave, i'm starting to patch my pants for the first time and u helped me too much, thanks man 🇧🇷🖤 +1 subscribed
Wow! Them jeans are cov-ERD! Looks dope!😎 I've been sewing patches for like 20 years now but yer def showing me tactics I never woulda thought of. Nice work!🤘
15:27 I do the same thing! I figured that out as a kid it helps with making knots big enough to not fall through the needle hole and keeps the stitches a bit stronger
Yo bro basically everyone ik does the same but also in future try making your first stitch loop between the threads so it just makes a loop around the fabric and cant come through without snapping, hope this helped:)
Tip if you dont want to hemm the patch for whatever reasons, get some clear nail polish and go over the edges. It will seal the fabric so you dont have to worry about your hemm being straight you can just cut the patch into the desired shape
About the bottle trick, avoiding bunching up the cloth of the pants underneath the patch.... YES. Wish I had known this before! The first pants I did were 30x more work than was necessary, and uncomfortably tight and stiff af
4:36 I use fishing line! Unfortunately it stretches in the dryer but I paid like $3 in the fishing section at Walmart for 700 yards of 4lb “high strength” fishing line
have you heard of sashiko? it’s more grandma than punk, but it looks awesome. it’s also super durable on stress points, especially if you layer on some more thick material.
I remember when I started making these when I was 16 in 2019 after listening to city morgue I loved the idea of mixing punk with hip hop i put rock bands on them but also horror movie patches like the shining micheal Myers and a bunch of things I found on shirts one of my pairs has a huge Jordan globe logo on the thigh and one has a Barack Obama collage on em I went to a mostly black public school and I used to wear them to school and everyone would ask where I got em and when I told them I made em they would ask for a pair I would always ask for a high price I knew they wouldn’t pay and always tell em they are lame and pointless if you don’t make em yourself and if youn constantly wear em
16:08 I do that with thread all the time lol. If licking it doesn’t get it good enough to go through the needle, just cut off the split ends and try to thread again.
Still wearing the pants from 2007 from the beginning of the video. The pair I put a patch on in this video was just for a demonstration and I gave them away. Eventually I am going to do a video on repairing torn crotches. Thanks for watching 🦖
this is very helpful! i always worry that people in the scene are too judgy (which they are) for me to make crust pants without having holes in the pants and stuff but you made me remember that part of the life style is not giving a fuck so i’m just gonna start lol
Hey man this video is awesome I’ve been patching for a while now and I’m wondering how to stitch my shoes on my pants like yours at the end of the video
You just cut apart the uppers from a pair of cloth sneakers (converse, vans, ect), then safety pin them over crotch and existing zipper, then sew them on with dental floss or waxed thread, then run your shoelaces through. You don't really really "replace" the zipper or the crotch of the pants (atleast I don't but you can if you want), you just sew over it. One day I'll make a video
Idk if I should put a patch in between my thighs because they always rub together and that’s why it’s the first and only place that a hole shows up when I wear pants down. I just feel like if I put a patch in between the patch would wear down more easily or fall off so like should I just put a bigger patch of fabric there so the hole is still fixed and all that? Thanks for this video! (I’m slowly transitioning into the style of punk ever since I started listening to different bands since sophomore year (I’m a senior now).)
4:45 is there a reason for safety pins in particular to pin down patches? Cuz I just use straight pins like you do in most sewing but I also between gifts and buying things over the years have gotten quite a bit of sewing supplies. On safety pins though, I used to be in theatre and I also used to work as a server in a cosplay restaurant and I will tell you safety pins and Bobby pins are ALWAYS good to have on hand whenever
the bottle in the leg is so smart oh my god, my stitch work might be wonky still but sewing from the outside seems like it could help a lot with keeping the consistency. i been sewing my patches on my first pair from the inside and its very difficult that way. i get tangled up a lot and even sewed my pants together a handful of times from the way i’ve been doing it😅 thank you so much !!!! did you get the shoe lace zipper from a busted shoe ????
Yup the shoe laces zipper is just an old shoe. Canvas shoes like vans or converse work great. Just pin it with safety pins over the crotch and sew it on (I don't actually remove the zipper underneath). A lot of old crust pants from the 80s-90s had these.
What a great tutorial. I would be interested to know what you did to resize your pants. My last job I ended up gaining 40 lbs and would love to bring my ol' 08 crust pants back from the grave.
So I took my crust pants and cut out an "inner seam" along the inside legs, all the way through the crotch. I then hand sewed them over and onto a donor pair of pants. I then went back and patched over the empty spaces with new patches to hid the blank space on the inside of the legs. Optionally you could cut the seam on the outside of the pants if you want to. It is a bit of work but definitely worth the effort. Feel free to dm me on Instagram with any questions @reptil_kodiya
@@nathanbender3811 I did not use the front pockets or the waist line of the original crust pants, I cut just below it. Then I sewed it onto the donor pants and relied on using those pockets and waist line.
I’m on the heavier side and sometimes finding clothes at the thrift store is hard for me, it wouldn’t be a big deal if I resorted to buying from a bigger retail store right? It’s just so hard to find clothes at my size, especially with people buying up bigger sizes for no good reason.
I'm making my own patches with other pants, fabric paints and too much time :]]] I'm gonna be slappin em on with embroidery thread. I also have a hoop B] I'm gonna be watching a hecc tone of videos like this so I can get inspiration and information Wish me luck hehe
this whole time i was using regular thread to sew on my patches and so far they're working well, even melting the ends it seems to say on, but the dental floss thing is new to me so i really wanna try that, thnx for the idea!
I would go with denim, as thinner material shreds easier over time. If you do cut pants into shorts I'd be sure to leave enough material to either fold and sew a new seam or enough to fold and cuff the material, so the material doesn't fray and shred. Unless that's the look you want
24:02 I will say I’ve tried that with fishing line and it doesn’t work so good. Tbf I didn’t set it on fire I just held it near a flame to try to melt the knots together lol
I’m 14 and have been listening to punk rock since i was a baby. (Thanks dad !!!) I’ve started my first pants and the first patch was a dead kennedys one :). Also, im having trouble making stencils. My exactly knife skills are awful i cant for the life of me cut curves ! Should i just free hand it ?? I love your videos dude ! Also, i bent my first needle in half lmao 😂
Hey I'm 13 and new to punk! Any tips on where to buy supplies from? I don't have much money but I plan to get a job next year to support me and my family. I recently got into diy altogether so these videos help a lot! I made a battle vest filled with stickers, drawings, and spike (and some googly eyes lol) and now I want to make a pair of crust pants to match it. I also want to start making my own patches so I can show off all the bands I like
Patches are pretty cheap to hand make. All you need is a yard of black canvas fabric from a craft store (you can also cut apart black denim thrift store pants and use that for fabric for cheaper), white fabric paint, sponge brushes and freezer paper. Check out this tutorial on freezer paper patches. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QM3MXJUqGAA.html
4:28 it’s funny I’m watching this while sewing patches onto an army jacket I was gifted from a yard sale Most my patches I’ve made/am making myself lol but I’m also like Very specific lol
Good question! Firstly, this is nothing personal at you but I'm going to say it anyway since I'm getting alot of questions from people about the pants that City Morgue wears. Now I do like City Morgue, especially Zillakami, I even own As Good As Dead on vinyl autographed by Sosmula and Zillakami. This also isn't a jab at City Morgue or any of their fans but the pants they wear are premade, expensive, fashion that lacks the true authenticity and the diy experience of hand making, sewing and mending your own pair of patch/crust pants over the course of many years. Now personally I could care less what people wear, I don't judge and I am only giving out some helpful advice from my own experience but just a major heads up for anyone that wears pre patched pants or wants to make their own pair of "city morgue" pants. Be fully prepared to be made fun of by people in the punk, metal, goth or whatever scene. Now if you are a big fan of city morgue and want to replicate your own pair then I say go right ahead, fuck the haters but just prepare for snide comments, dirty looks and ridicule. Now if you are interested in making your own patched pants I would highly recommend you go with your own style and avoid them looking anything like the premade garbage they sell online. Secondly, when it comes to the base of your patched pants the "brand" does not matter in the slightest. You are going to look for three things 1. Make sure they fit you good.(you are going to be practically living in them) 2. Make sure they are on the tighter side.( traditionally they are skinny or tight fitting jeans) 3. Make sure they are solid, quality denim. Avoid extremely stretchy material as it rips easy. (They need to be durable strong and tough for daily wear and tear) Patch pants are a long term project. You are going to want them to last years! (My oldest pair is going on 15 years) the quality of the pants matters more than a brand name. Ive made patched pants with second hand Levi's, slim Wranglers, random brands and even garbage pants from Walmart. I would definitely recommend going to a thrift or consignment store and finding a pair of pants that meet the above qualities. If you already have a pair of pants that fit these requirements than by all means start with them as your base. Some people already have a "favorite" pair of pants/jeans that already fit perfect, these are a perfect base to put some patches on. Also try not to rush, this is going to be a long term dedicated project. Not something you can do in a few days/weeks. Hopefully this helps. Goodluck
Hey if you want to make your own mst pants you could buy diy transfer paper that you use to make custom shirts to make the images for the patches and then just sew
@@swaggydaddygrung3136 I've seen people do this with patches. Be wary the iron on printable transfer paper does not last long, it gets crinkly and off color with wear
I use crustpunks.com, alot of people have shops on Etsy as well, you can also get them going to shows and supporting the bands merch table, or you you can make your own. I have a video called "easy punk patches" that shows the freezer paper stencil method. It is super easy and requires no artistic ability
Good to know. People where saying they use embroidery thread for mst reproduction patch pants. Personally I do not make those kind of pants, nor did I set out to make a tutorial about how to make them but I am sure some viewers will find this information helpful!
