Reject overpriced plastic. Embrace affordable printed resin
@RoseKindred
@RoseKindred Месяц назад
Right? G-Wreckshop could have revitalized everything if they stopped chasing pennies. Their f-cast stuff does not need to be so expensive for such a bubble ridden mess. Heck, I think they would gain a large chunk of people back if they switched to instore printing/pickup for OOP Oldenhammer. The plastic I can see going up in price, but not as much as it has. There is 0 justification for this aside from making up the loss from new raises.

Hey Sam, Glad you covered this! As someone who's entire job is doing exactly this, its nice to have it covered. I have some pretty in depth thoughts on this if you ever end up doing another video and want some insights into starting to where I am now.

"They're just trying to shut down the competition" Yep. Remember Spots the Pink SM fiasco? The author was using public domain words, in use BEFORE G-Wreckshop, and they used both trademark and copyright laws which wouldn't even apply. But due to rules Ama still had to delist and pull. I love bringing that up due to fading attention spans.

Welcome to the business. I went through this with my laser company. Licensing sucks especially if there is no exclusivity or MAP licensing model. It becomes a race to the bottom with tiny margins. The only way out is to design your own stuff and not license. It sucks because there is a limit to how much time you can be designing and not printing. You quickly hit diminishing returns. Add the supporting and test time and you really need to dial in your workflow. I also love them mentioning the material/resin used. The resin supply chain is good but not perfect and all it takes is one bad batch to really screw stuff up and cause delays. The cost of the resin is also an issue and if you have to switch brand, there is the testing and tuning time. Those things and major time and profit killers. You have to treat it like a REAL business and not a hobby. That means a real business plan. Getting a license and legal representation on retainer. Sitting down and running your cost numbers and not just the hard costs of the equipment and supplies but the soft costs like time, packaging, shipping limits/requirements, platform costs, etc. Read as much as you can about running a business before you even start. Look at how taxes work. That extra income needs to be reported and there is nothing worse when you get that first 1099 from your payment processor only to learn, it doesn't include withholding taxes. Being your own company is not easy but if you pull it off you are set to control your own future.

I sell from time to time. I’ve paid off my 2 printers at this point and maybe put a little extra in my pocket. I don’t plan on doing it full time, but it is some nice and easy money when you do it a few times a month.

I would also recommend learning 3D design. Don't just offer someone else's creations but your own, and no Merchants is needed for your own stuff. Even though AI is making 3D models now, a human touch is still required. I have been learning Blender to start my own model/terrain to offer. It is a chance to restart after becoming disabled.

@chrisrhodes6595 the learning process will take a year and a couple of years until you are comfortable. Study work you admire, draw your references and model those references. Keep going!
@RoseKindred
@RoseKindred Месяц назад
@@chrisrhodes6595 It has changed over 2+ years, so I don't know if the artist who showed it off is still using it for video game assets. One of the examples I saw had the designer create a rectangle in Blender, type in the prompt, and it changed the mesh, unwrapped UV, and added textures to make it look like a large AC cooling unit. Rough, but it worked. I'm not saying AI is a bad tool, by itself, just too many people are going the easy route of type and done.

Crushing content! Like most “cutting edge” technologies there’s a lot of work that must, MUST, be done yourself. If, and when, the technology becomes more widespread then the market to fill the demand will also grow. This includes better files, including supports.

alot of people buy files or printed models. As an example i know a seller who lives in china and he gets access to almost anything and eaht he does is he has individuals around the world he has print and shop on his behalf and he pays them X amount. So he never has issues of falling behind.

Really relatable , love this video. It’s definitely not as easy as you’d think and it’s something not to jump in and start turning a profit. I don’t expect to start seeing a profit for at least a year after investments of files , materials, cleaning materials etc. The one thing they don’t touch on and it’s definitely a big one to do dependant on your country’s laws is keeping on top of your sales and recording all your outgoings so when it comes to the tax man time you can do your return as painless as it can be. I did laugh to myself when they said about having more files than time to list them 😂 I wear that t short daily .

I reckon that would be awesome, I think it would be worth (and I don’t mean exacts) but talk about something that many people don’t realise is how much money we earn per sale. I can only talk from personal experience but I bet people don’t realise that a product I sell for say £5.99 I only make £1.5 and why certain things cost a lot more and show the real value of stuff, examples of products that are multi plate prints are diminishing returns due to time to print and post processing doesn’t necessarily mean we charge the world and a £50 print often , albeit a good chunk of change, offers extreme value for what’s put into it. Loved the video and your 2s perspective and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous of you having mezgikes merchant license.

@@craigchuck4247 Yeah all good points, thats definitely something we didnt talk about which I think would be good for a follow up vid. I made a couple of thousand off my first 3d printer. But that was 8 years ago in the wild west days. Hell just 'oil' drums made me over £500. But the market tightened and I got hit with a few false ip hits on Ebay ... once they think your own mini is not yours its VERY difficult to convince them its your model. In the end Brexit killed my business as 60% of my sales were outside the UK and it fell off a cliff. Happy to do it and still give mates rates but the market left me behind years ago.

Im sell 3d print, not de models, but the SERVICE... i think if your client give you the model, and dont have de printer, you can make money with no problem, the problem of IP its on the hand of client not yours, he finds or buy the model, downloads and share with you, how he find and download, idk, dont matters... its a nice and secure format for me, other important thing, you dont have the obrigation to sell ONLY miniatures, you open to make all projects, hobby or not, you free to make what the client needs using this custom service!

The issue is I have the bambu p1s and just can't justify resin, the fumes the hazards etc and I would have to put it in my garage, which from my main room is a minute walk, Also in my garage I have my small personal gym too so, I just can't easily justify all those factors for "Sharper/nicer looking mini prints" because that's about all I could use it for...

i got myself a merchant licence from dakka dakka, also riverside minis. it works pretty great but from what i can say, you have to pay a lot of money before you do profit. packaging, resin, stl files, merchant licences sometimes you have to do the same print twice cause it breaks, fails, you name it. currently i got 2 printers and they only run for my commercial stuff. for now its enough.
@deformiertergolfball4847

also the time aspect. i work 10hrs a day fulltime, when i get home i sometimes have to sit there for 2+ hours to clean, cure, dry, package etc.

the supports are also a thing. i usually use auto support. cause it works great for me. with dakka dakka store i use their pre supportet models ( those are the first ones which work for me ) but my experiance is that these creators put too much supports on models which makes cleaning them up a big big mess.

i dont believe into high quality resin. i use water washable resin on my mars 4 max 6k and my prints come out just crispy. my ratings are great with this resin, some people even wrote that those are the best printed models they ever got. its not about resin cost, its more likley about your settings.
