My dad was a car mechanic and one thing he taught us was to always start all the bolts before you tighten any. That way you can still wiggle it around enough to get that last one in straight 😊
@@dangitdan9938 why? The tubes are mounted up in the front of the L shaped chassis and the air comes in the back and out around the power tubes and up through the vents on top like a chimney. It’s got much better airflow than most combos that have tubes hanging down underneath the circuit board. It passed all the safety tests with flying colors. So don’t worry, I got this. If you’re talking about the speaker, all of our combos and cabinets are closed back and have no problem.
Of course you can’t build a tube amp at this price using a UK built speaker, so I had Celestion modify one of their cheaper Chinese ones so it sounds in between the brighter G12H Anniversary used in our 5150 III combos and the darker EVH speaker that’s based on the G12M and used in our 5150 III 412’s. It looks similar because it shares some of the parts such as the critical smaller dust cover, 1-3/4” voice coil and the edge treatment is the same. I think the end result is a nice sounding speaker that’s much better than their stock cheaper ones and costs about 1/3 of the G12M.
Yeah I don't think anyone is dogging on you or anything. I am looking forward to seeing what comes next for you and EVH/Fender and eventually trying the Iconic for myself.
@@andrewsmall4865 understood, I just wanted to dispel the idea that we just threw a cheap speaker in it since I spent many months of testing and trying different tweaks to develop it. Ola didn’t say that but others have. Thanks!
@@DarrenWaters75 these do sound closer to the Sheffield 1200’s to me, but the Sheffield had bigger/expensive magnets. So the efficiency is a few dB less on the Iconic speaker
Hi James, happy holidays. Question, is the Iconic related to the Amptweaker amp you were prototyping a few years back? Hope things are going well for you at Fender?
Changing your speaker is the single thing that will most affect your guitar tone. It's the last item in your rig and is what vibrates the air for you. Speakers are kings of tone!
@@APPL3SL1CES yeah just keep the volume down and maybe turn down the impedance on the amp, works for me haha. 5150s don't require power amp distortion to sound good anyways its a preamp focused amp.
Just the difference between a closed back and an open back makes a BIG difference in sound. If he re-attached the back plate, Or played it it with the original speaker and the back plate off, it would have been a more accurate representation. As it is, I can't tell if it's the speaker or it being an open back cab. Big difference.
also, acoustic memory is largely a myth. without side by side testing, it's almost always just going to be the result that one expects rather than one that is actually confirmed.
I think the GB will ultimately work better in the Iconic than the Vyper. They really do prefer closed-back cabs and have both fuller and tighter bass that way.
I'm thinking this, too. Just the difference between a closed back and an open back makes a BIG difference in sound. If he re-attached the back plate, it would have been a more accurate representation.
the stock speaker is junk they tried to keep the cost down and failed bad, if Eddie was alive he probably would have said no way on that speaker@@mrax101
Thank you for this, especially mentioning the speaker impedance. I've been looking everywhere for the impedance of the original speaker, so I'm guessing it's 16 ohms. That's another thing to take into consideration, as impedance also has an important effect on sound.
Honestly... this is the first time I have heard that Iconic amp actually sound really good! I think you are on to something here! It has a beefier low-end, and the top-end nasty fizz is pretty much gone!
I'm not sure why there's so much bashing on this amp..I have been super impressed, and with that GB (..or even Creamback75, another excellent choice), BOOM! That thing sounds killer!! Chewie!! Nice! Thanks Ola!
Dude! Thanks for this video. I was looking at the 5150 iconic 4x12 but for some reason retailers don't take pictures of the actual speakers in the cab. This was helpful, thank you. The Evh G12 speakers sound really sick! It's a shame they aren't stock in the full cab line. Cutting costs at the speaker is unfortunate bc some of the customers will then have to either upgrade or use a different cab that doesn't match the 5150 iconic head. (Which might steer people away from buying in the first place so i don't get their logic) They should offer a 5150 iconic mid tier with the better speakers at a higher cost as a separate option to save people the time and effort that want the OG EVH speaker in the new iconic amp.
Hi bro,I am puzzled whether the evh 5150 el34 can be used with the 412 greenback,😂what do you think about this problem?I’m prefer to play the rock and metal but not heavy metal
Loving the vid (IKEA probably do as well)! Like your style Ola, just rip out the speaker, slap the Greenback in...plug in and chug. No unnecessary banter, just get stuck in, BAM ha ha. Made me smile, and got me looking at Greenbacks. Happy new year.
lol any one else would have done this on a work bench or something to make it easier, not Ola he gets right down there on the floor like a mechanic working on a car. love ya man!
I’d like to see this amp tried with a few other speakers just to see the differences. Cream back and a vintage 30 like a few people already mentioned, a GT-75, and whatever the custom speaker is in the EVH 4X12 5150 cabinets. Would be interesting if somebody at Celestion could be talked into doing something like that. Get them to sample a bunch of their speakers in this amp.
Great vid Ola and man why won't you do another video on this combo with a proper mic set up. It would be awesome to fully appreciate the sound of one speaker against the other.👍🏼
Greenbacks are my favorite Celestion but to be fair that EVH will sound better over time, i'd say like every speaker i buy brand new is really harsh and brittle even because it hasn't been broken in yet. that Greenback has had some miles on it so it's more malleable and lets a lot more bass out
I just got this today switching over from the DSL40CR and I am very pleased. I wish I had you on speed dial so I could ask a bunch of questions before buying an amp :)
I could only dream about having a fraction of the gear you have!! To make multiple guitars alone would be awesome!! Love the channel bro, both of them!! I’ll keep supporting ya as long as you put content out! Much love and merry Christmas to you and the fam!
@MrCleanPhoto Did you have the original speaker in it for long? I wonder If the sound will change when broken in. Do you try the original open back before switching?
Same here. Was my favourite amp I've ever used. I'm considering buying an Iconic today and wondering if it's going to be or how similar. I hope so. I bought an MT 15 PRS and it doesn't sound (feel) how I need it too and am going to return it.
Man i really wanna get one of those for home use and writing 😍 Doubt the wife will be happy bout it tho since it wasn't that long ago i brought home an EVH III 100w 6l6 head with matching 412 xD
This sounds better than the iconic 80w head video you just made. The tone on your recent iconic video was horrible, it was fizzy as hell. This is much better imo.
Glad to see you be a gear head like me lol. My current rig is a peavey studio pro 65 watt from the 80's bypassed factory speaker into a line6 4x12 cab , it's fun and sound is way better than my Marshall 3130 100 watt Glad you have become a mad scientist. Lmao
The staff at Celestion will make a standing wave for Ola and have extra cake on friday the week they hear about this haha! Then the phones will start ringing from all over the world ... :D
Just watched this again. I thought it sounded pretty great as original...Although I do like the GB25 better...Excellent uprgade on a already killer sounding amp.
You're right, but for metal, it's really not desirable to go above noon on the master volume anyway, so it shouldn't be an issue. It is something to keep in mind to not damage anything though.
How the hell did you get the back panel off, I for the life of me can not get it off to swap the speaker. Tried the trick with the screws tried with rubber mallet, no luck.
I have always thought with my ears anyway that the 55 hz g12 h green back sounded better than the 75 hz ,with a origin or plexi Marshall of course the the iconic Marshalls just sound good um a late 70s early 80s kinda metal head ,with so many amps out there now ,sound is endless,,,,,merry Christmas chuggers
I've got an original 412 from the late 70s with those 55 Hertz speakers in it. Best sounding cabinet there is. I have a 212 I had custom made with the newer version of those speakers and it sounds almost as glorious. It's actually a little bit tighter but for that speaker it's not something you really want. It's got the crispity crunch.
exactly! the greenback has been played alot more. im so glad someone brought that up. it drives me nuts seeing all the comments bashing a speaker that could be just fine over time. Greenbacks are my fav tho
Any chance you could try a Hesu with it? I'm considering one as a practice rig would love to hear before i make my choice more video's like this would also be killer.
Hi Ola ! merry christmas ! maybe try a v30 vintage speaker on it to compare with the greenback , maybe sound better or maybe not... take car and e safe !
Damn. I gotta get me a GB for my old Spider2. I only use the recording output for everything but noodling about because it's quite harsh sounding...and since I mainly use virtual guitar amps and IRs I couldn't be bothered to buy a new amp.
