I think the developer would have done better with an HD remake of the first game for $30 and do new DLC. At least that wouldn't require you to innovate which they didn't or couldn't.

@@seankay597 I hear you, I pre ordered the game and some of what he says is right on the nose, I'll say you can get more then 4 to six hours out of the early game, depends on how much you want to do...Big issue is that if no one buys the game I doubt they'll be an evil genius 3 😅

*Evil genius* had also that in between boring repetetive cycle , it's a normal thing really in these sort off games. I don't know if anyone ever here played *The Sims* but it is just how it is , everything goes to well you get to good and the challenge goes down the drain while you are waiting for something to happen. Honestly i suggest you play *Evil Genius 2* on the hard difficulty or very Hard if you want to keep it interesting instead off just steamrolling the game. It's a common complaint for these genres and it's not really negative it's just part off the overall design ...

But the thing about The Sims isn’t really progression. It’s about building the world. The focus isnt gameplay but creating houses, rooms, families, and narratives. I have a friend that’s put in hundreds of dollars into Sims and she just plays to make houses and stuff. So I’d say for EG it is a problem when the gameplay is the focus of the game not the actually building. Comparing The Sims and EG is a pretty big stretch imo. The Sims is literally just about regular people living their life, you just build them homes and see their interactions. It’s like how people can enjoy Animal Crossing when there really isn’t much to do besides building your town.

That Randleman vs Fedor fight got to be one of the most badass fights in MMA history. Randleman could have killed a MMA fighter with that suplex he did but Fedor hardly even got affected by it. Fedor was just simply not a normal human being in his prime 😄 Man i miss the good ol’ Pride FC days, so many good fights and cool personalities in Pride FC

So pleasantly surprised to see the Fedor/Randleman moment which collectively made everyone's jaw drop. UFC and MMA is popular now, but so many missed the glory days of Pride when Sakuraba was a Gracie assassin but never could beat an Axe Murderer, Crocop was known for a special move like he came out of Street Fighter, and everyone feared the ice cold Russian named Fedor.

I found it really hard to figure out what exactly you didn't like in this game, and thus found the review not that useful. Like you didn't like that we didn't start from a more grounded position (gaining power instead of immediately having an island) Then you didn't like the equipment that you can place in rooms, but before you expand on that you talk about the world map?

It is a cashgrab game that plays on nostalgia while missing what made the first game great. Balance is worse, they don't innovate in any meaningful way (new additions), the new additions that were added are done poorly, remaking a room tile by tile, no expansion from the first game. It looks great and plays good enough but falls short of the first game. I mean why aren't there different modes where you start off on a tiny island and have to build up a real empire around the world. It is just a gash grab for nostalgia. It would have done better if they just did an HD remake of the first game and release new DLC, but they wouldn't have made nearly as much money. Sadly because they made this game, now Rebellion Developments will be a never buy for me. Then again looking at everything else they have made, this game was always going to fail.

I'll give it a shot tomorrow. I like games like Dungeon Keeper or Dungeons and I see no reason why I should not enjoy this game as well. I don't care about greyed out menues or minions disappearing for their missions and so on. I like building my little bases and watch enemies getting shredded to pieces for daring to enter my property. Half the charme of those types of games for me is not just to build bases, but also to build some cool looking and efficient bases. So yeah.. I'm curious if I'm gonna like it or not, but.. I remain optimistic for now. What I've seen so far looks great to me so I'm not too worried.

The digging and minion gameplay reminds me a lot like Dungeon Keeper 2. Loved that game, might pick it up on sale. £15 - £20 seems good price.

Thanks for the review, I value your opinion on these things but I gotta ask on this one: Did you have a script? This feels like a very rambling, incoherent review, jumping from one train of thought to another - it’s quite hard to follow. As for the game, I’m looking forward to it, but there are some things I’m not liking the sound of I.e. minions never returning; I’d have liked to be able to see minions have a risk of death or capture or betrayal, but that some would come back, maybe level up and evolve into henchmen, have more skills to go along with those personalities or something.

Well I think the minions leaving is so you don't get tons of money for free, plus you get a new one every minute so I don't see it being that big of a deal when the money takes longer to come back, and it gives you more heat, in turn making agents come investigate you. The henchmen though, I don't really agree on, I think 8 different ones is enough, and would honestly prefer more henchmen to choose from then upgrades.

2004 was the best year ever for gaming IMO. The lineup of titles released that year is insane. GTA: San Andreas, Halo 2, half life 2, WoW, Far Cry, Sims 2, can just keep naming fantastic/legendary games.

I think it should be hard to tell if it was worth it when you murder a minion. That ambiguity seems realistic.

It's not even hard to tell, he is nit picking in this review. The purpose of killing a minion is to do it in front of other minions to motivate them to work harder. If you do that the game shows you who witnessed it by putting an icon over the heads of the witnesses. It's plain to see, I don't know what he finds hard about that.

You literally just explained WHY it doesn't work as a mechanic. It puts an icon above their head isn't a result that a gamer wants to have. They need some kind of concrete result. Which the game fails to visually report on a number of moments including this one.

So for me personally a double drill down data point something we see in other games that is still considered to be shallow would be good enough here probably. Perhaps a ring of influence with a graphical rendition of a count down or an exact indicator of there harder work. Another sore point is that the game changes it's be verbage many times for the same thing effort, work,task, etc

It does look like they went out of their way to streamline a lot of the gameplay, smaller research tree, fewer minion stats, having your casino already built. Seems a little too "mobile" friendly.

Overall it's an enjoyable enough game, though I would recommend waiting for a sale. But expect massive lack of balance all around. Agents and Super Agents are massively overtuned. For clarification, I've almost unlocked Tier 5. Decoration objects aren't worth using. The area is so tiny and the benefit is so negligible, it's just not worth it. And from what I can tell, the stat drain reduction does not stack with similar drain reductions (i.e. Smarts drain reduction doesn't stack with another item's Smarts drain reduction).

As a "hardcore" fan of this game. I played Evil Genius 1 when it came out. This game is aimed at hardcore fans, i love it but for new players i believe you should wait for sale. The game makes you feel tired pretty "quickly". It usually takes me 2 hours to say enough for each play-through. I was expecting a Dungeons 3 game with newer elements. But the lack of campaign feels that subtracts from the enjoyment of the game as it forces you to have self motivation to play the game.

Thanks for the honest and in-depth review once again! I've put about 5h of playtime into the game, and really enjoyed it so far. Still gotta see how the late game pans out. What really annoys me already though, is that I have to manually left-click each enemy agent and select what I want to do with them. In Evil Genius you could hold down control and right click tag every enemy of the same type/wave. I can already see that getting a little tedious. And it took me like 5 hours to stumble upon the minion management table and priorities, which are also oddly greyed out. You can select individual minions and say what room/action they should prioritise. Say for e.g. if you always wanted to have a guard manning the security cameras, because I had issues that nobody would actually do that, even though I had 5 cameras and two empty security control tables. Still, fun little game that scratches my Theme Hospital and Dungeon Keeper itch.

The micromanagement is kinda gone. The world map doesn't feel in peril like in the first game Building outside on the beach is gone The GUI should give you more info quickly Minions feel disposable, like i was just a minion machine instead of a crime lord. I hope in next patches and dlc things get tone back towards the original game

A shame - you really have to get the data and balance right with management games, or you end up failing for reasons you can't even divine. Cyberpunk finally taught me the folly of pre-purchasing, so I'm glad I didn't prepurchase this one as well.

I love cities skylines every time I play it... just can't put it down - So I think I'd like this type of game. $40cad is pretty steep though

Thanks for the review, I was concerned the delivery being shallow too...your review made me not buy this game (yet, hopefully DLCs will add more depth)
