Hi Kodi, Billy Ray is a scary dude for sure. You need to get him a new stogie. I agree with you assessment of the 2 motors. I love my main mercury 2 stroke mercury but my Yamaha kicker motor runs like a top and very easy to work on. Well except the lower shift rod connector and access hole is a pain

Have you used a Hong Kong made Johnson 2.3hp ? Just got one from 1996. Seems pretty good runner / cooling and light too. Thanks Kodi for this video .

The Hong Kong 3.3 looks like the forerunner of last Tohatsu Suzuku Mariner 2.3 2.5 and 3.5 two strokes that ran till 4 stroke replaced them I have Tohatsu and Suzuki 2 and 2.3 1990s both still work well and are very light... unlike 4 strokes...

Hey KodiBass, I mean comparing motors almost 20 years apart is a tough one.I think a 1977 4 Hp Evinrude or Johnson CD motor would blow that 3.3 HP away. The only thing I like about that 3.3HP motor is the telltale pisser,LOLL! the rest of its junk in my opinion .But I do agree its an interesting side by side comparison and makes for a interesting video to say the least. Those little two hp OMCS werent great motors even back in there day. Hi there I have the Johnson 3.3 Hp 1996 model. Just bought it second hand. it struggles to keep it running when on 2/3 or more throttle, sounds like engine will speed up the cuts out. After 10 second it starts when I move it back to start position. Sometimes in less throttle, if I run it just above idle no problem, I suspect fuel starvation, how and where do i adjust the cab to fix this issue.

The original versions of these monsters had conventional magneto ignition that was pretty tough to deal with...OMC supplied Korea with some technology and parts to convert these things to mag CD. What looks like "CDI" on that powerpack actually says CD1, meaning that powerpack is meant for a single cylinder engine...OMC may have made that pack for the Koreans, or perhaps just designed it for them....The coil is definitely just the standard magCD coil used on most OMC outboards of that vintage. I never had much luck trying to change the mixture on these things, something about moving some internal rod...Never got to mess with this much, which is why I probably didn't have luck figuring it out...Don't like it, but that's the way it is...You mentioned the water pump set up on the conventional 2hp...The problem here is that the impeller housing is the gearcase! Spending the bucks for the SS/plastic hsg water pump kit is a must for sure. Replacing just the original style impeller on these things is not a very effective cooling fix. The exhaust manifold is not totally cooled, like some of the old 3hps or 5.5hps, which is why they seem hot....I understand that this is unnerving, coupled with the lack of a real overboard telltale....The fuel shut off valve is supposed to have a screen in it, but that probably broke off on your engine. Yes, the 3.3hp does have a lot of plastic crap on it, but it is probably easier to service than the 2hp...Like you said, you have to remove the aluminum ring and rusted brackets, broken bolts to do any service work on it. Again, I had little experience with the hong kong motors, so can't comment on serviceability of the water pump or powerhead durability. I love the old 2hps, but am honest enough to acknowledge their flaws. And yes, the hong kong jobs run rings around the old 2hp, and the CD1 ignition is definitely a plus. I don't know what they used for a sensor under the flywheel though, but I'm sure it is something simple and reliable. Magneto ignition is great/simple, the problem with the old 2hps is that they suffered from lack of use and storage in damp areas (like sailboat lockers)...So, the points did tend to get rusted, requiring service and wrestling with the damn brackets and aluminum ring. So, I will be man enough to admit that your assessment of the engines was very fair. The only unknown to me is how the hong kong units stood up to salt water use....Someday, I will have another look at one of those carbs and get it figured out....

Great video. Any chance you could show how you have your carburetor screw(s) set up. I have same engine doesn’t start in “start” have to throttle up.

3.5 Tohatsu was powerful enough to move a 19ft Sailing Cruiser at waterline speeds...and yet light enough to lift off and put on tender easily afloat...

Can you get parts for the 3.3 hp. ? Or are they very difficult to get.

Hey Kodi, thanks for sharing. I have one of these Evinrude 3.3s made in Hong Kong, but I see that the exhause is coming out of the cooling water outlet. The water out of the piss tube comes out sputtering, not a fine continuous flow. I think the exhause fumes are mixing somewhere with the water path. Any idea where it could be? Also, could not trace where the exhaust should come out from.. thanks!

What's the "Core Seal" stuff you use on some motors in your videos? Is it "Corroseal" rust converter primer?

You did not shut the choke off on the evinrude when you ran it, how come ? I just bought a 94 model today , starts and runs well, very light

The 3.3 Evinrude looks identical to Mercury 2.5 and 3.3. I like the simple car on the Mercury. The differenc between the 2.5 and 3.3 are... 2.5 carb does not open full and is direct drive. The 3.3 carb opens fully and there is neutral/forward gearbox. It looks like this Evinrude 3.3 is a clone of the Mercury 2.5 with a fully opening carb.

PICK UP A 4HP JOHNSON TWIN CYLINDER 34LBs YOU CAN HAVE A ONE GALLON TANK EXTERNALLY RUN ALL DAY EVERYDAY YEAR AFTER YEAR WITH NO MAINTENANCE. COMPARE THAT TO YOUR HONG CONG P O S AND YOU CAN GET THEM IN A CARRYING CASE WITH A FOLDING LOWER UNIT.

Is the 4 HP better. More reliable than the 3.3 ?

I'm wondering the same 🤣 the 3.3 sounds like a 2 stroke to me. I have the same engine and Im trying to figure which gas to add in to it

what an enormous hunk a crap when I spend your money on something from Hong Kong when you could have got a little 5.5 horsepower made in the 60s by Evinrude that would still be running in perfect condition like I did the other day for $25
