This video shows how to replace a water pump impeller on a 1981 Evinrude 7.5 HP. We cover it step by step. This old motor has been setting for years. We are just trying to bring it back to life again.
I found that a little dab of vaseline will hold that impeller key while sliding down the impeller over it. Of course, before pulling down on the gearcase, you first had to pull out the retaining pin that locks in the top of the shifting rod against the shifting lever mechanism. Love your videos !
@@OmFishing morning.. I watched a video where they took a carb of a 15 hp Johnson and put it on a 9.9 and got more speed my question is can I do the same with my 7.5 ???? either take one off a 9.9 or 15 and put it on 7.5 thanks
The beauty of these engines is that the gearcase pops off and on easily, no shift rod connector. Unfortunately, those plastic housings and upper gearcase cover commonly split like that, especially in salt water. I'm wondering why someone has rerouted that overboard indicator hose like that, instead of leaving it the way it came. Good idea to pull these gearcases off every year to clean and relube those gearcase splines, these engines love to rust those splines together in salt water. And, like Om says, once the splines are rusted together, you have got a big mess for sure. The only other issue that might need to be addressed is the upper water tube grommet, these loved to swell and block cooling flow, especially in salt water.
I enjoy the simple ways in which you communicate with your viewer. Maybe you can help with something that I really having troubling deciding between to motors. One is like the one your demonstrating (1981 Evinrude 7.5hp), the other is a (1957-58 Evinrude 7.5hp.) Both are cosmetically sound, I also know I'm going to fork out a few dollars to get them up and running to top condition. Having said that; I really enjoy working with vintage motors and parts will not be the issue as they can be found. Yet I know that one of the motors is much older then the other. What kind of advise could you give me. Gracias
Thanks again it helped me get this done! I do have a concern though. When I used the original key there was a good 1/4 inch of free play. I used the one that I got from ebay and it fit good no free play. The concern is the key that came with it seemed like a hard plastic. I will see if it lasts. Should there be free play when the impeller is on the shaft? Thanks, Brian in Mi
Do you clean the inside of that shell. When i took mine off it looked like a real grainy oil inside the part the rudder and bottom end of that connect to the other half. I don't know the names of everything but yours looks pretty dirty too. Thanks
