The Muppets not blinking their eyes was also probably aesthetics, IMO, to kinda match what the Muppets have going on outside of that particular stage show. Not many Muppets can blink, so even though the puppet/costumes seem a bit limited, it works pretty well where continuity is concerned.

We took our 2 year old to meet Mickey at the magic kingdom twice this year. The articulation caught my husband and I off guard. It was an incredible experience, not just for our daughter but us as well.

I think it would be harder for Woody with the type of jawline he has and could impact the wearer a little bit, but I would easily see Buzz and Jessey getting it. In fact it would be cool if Buzz's helmet could open and close, same with his wings and possibly a small laser (though the laser probably not for safety reasons).

I remember going to a Toy Story themed hotel in 2006, there was big toys from toy story there, and you could play and take photos there. I hope in Toy Story Land they add those.. I really liked the toy car, I sat in it for ages haha

Chuck E Cheese had an Articulated head in the early 1980's and during 1996-1999 along with Helen, Jasper, Munch, and Pasqually. Maybe do a little history of Chuck E Cheese and Friends with their articulated heads.

Those were the animatronics, not the live performer costume, that's the difference. It's easy to have all the hydraulics needed to move that many parts under the stage, it's another thing to fit it inside a head.

That meet & greet at the end, I can't wait for all characters to get that. Being to talk to the fab 5 at their spots around the park, talking to characters passing by from spot to spot like the storm troopers...hope we get there soon!!

From what I know, Jim Henson helped create the first performer based character in which the character could move its mouth. Today at Disney, some characters are able to move their mouth and eyes, and some even can make facial gestures. From personal experience with character performing, the mouths are moved by using what is referred to as a "mech." A mech is a device that the performer holds on to in one hand, with one or two fingers placed on a lever, pulling it down would open the mouth, and letting go would close the mouth, explaining why in some clips, the characters hand synced with the movement of the mouth. Some mechs are designed differently depending on which company makes the costume, and of course the year they were made. Today, Disney stage character performers use mechs, bite guards (for free range of hands), or the newly introduced "auto mech", which is a synched set that is preset to move at a certain time. Staged shows for example, have a track, and the mouths and eyes are pre set to move when the character talks, all controlled by a base, which would be where all the controls for the show are, and a reciever, which is placed in the specific characters head. Due to the fact that most performers eye sight are through the mouth, when the character is not talking/singing, the mouth will remain open for full sight. Although the "moving of the mouth" (or professionally referred to as "meching" (for the mechanical movement of the mouth done by the performer) may be different for characters with Disney, as far as I know it used to be the same.

i absolutely love the articulated characters. the last time i was at disney (june of 2017), i went to the meet and greet for magician mickey. it was so realistic and beautiful to me that i started crying as i was walking out. it really was a dream come true to see a role model and icon of mine come to life in that way.

That's how he works in the Pixar Play Parade. But that would be a little clunky for trying to maneuver for meet and greets. He also wouldn't be able to sign anything, since his front paws would be the cast member's feet.

When I went to the meet and greet with Mickey in the magics kingdom, I had no idea he could talk. When we walked in and he said 'hello everyone' I was overcome with emotion and broke out crying. It was one of those rare magic moments that only Disney could pull off.

Lol I used to watch a power rangers season called SPD. And a couple of the characters were (something like) like REALLY WELL MADE 'puppets' like that. I had kinda wondered how the heck the actor was able to do such smooth looking movements. It's like my favorite show (still is even though it was in like 2008) so I was all about looking at behind the scenes of the show. And I can't promise that the color of my face didn't leave, but at the same time laughed my head off (lol...head... I'm hilarious XD), when I saw that the actor's head had been seeing through the character's kinda tall neck but didn't look too weird, which had made out of mesh. And the thing that got me laughing was seeing how tiny he looked in the costume (the costume itself was very wide compared to his own so that they could have the head on it with 'comfortable' amount of space for his own head. But the thing that kinda bummed me out was seeing that everything above the neck was all wires. I mean I knew it had to have been something like that but I guess it just sucks seeing wires in one of your most favoritest characters' head.

As a side note, during the Dream Along With Mickey show, the characters were controlling themselves the actuation of their eyelids and mouth with their fingers. This can most clearly be seen on Minnie between 9:53 and 10:00 where you can see that here left hand fingers control here eyelids and here right hand fingers control her mouth. Today, this is radio controlled and synchronized electronically with the soundtrack.

Somehow my parents or Grammy had VHS tapes with Pooh's Corner and Dumbo's Circus on them. I was born in '93 and was really into Pooh Bear? So I grew up on those VHS tapes. Cool to see they weren't just part of my imagination!! 😂

I worked one on one with these characters and was hands on with the articulation. Watching the progression of the tech was very cool. To see it go from the original manual version to the stuff we have now was a hell of a ride and it happened fast !!!

I'm curious if we'll ever see this technology implemented into other theme parks (i.e. Universal and Six Flags). I really like this new tech as it gives the characters more animation than before. I'm really curious to see how this will go and evolve in the next couple of years.

I think they should make the Cars characters that drive around in Cars Land have articulated mouths and blinking eyes!!!! It would be a great touch since the animatronics in Radiator Springs Racers have this feature already!!!! =^-^=

The last time I went a couple of years ago, the Cars were just static vehicles you could take a picture in front of. Don't know if that was just a technical issue that day, or if they move at all.

I'd love to see General Grievous make his debut at the Jedi Training attraction as an Articulated. Think about how cool that would be: The menacing cyborg with fluid motions, blinking eyes, and the occasional coughing fit. Since there's no good way to have him portrayed by a cast member, an articulated would be the only good way. And the "Jedi Knight" cast members would be able to learn his movements (since they would be pretty "rigid," as an animatronic) and make sure that the kids stand where they can duel him without getting hurt. And, if the kid does all the right motions, it would look pretty seamless. Plus, he would be able to vocally interact with the kids, something it's harder for the other villains to do. Plus, it makes the most sense - in the Star Wars universe, at least. While Vader or Kylo Ren would probably just go for the Knights, Grievous seems like the type to take the kids on in combat, and then be Force Shoved away. From every angle (except for the unpredictability of the padawans), it just makes so much sense!

That's not how any of that works? The articulated characters are still Cast Members, but they have the mechanics to move their mouth and blink in their head. An animatronic is different, and would not be able to move and walk on the stage in a way that would look anything close to real. They have to be attached to the ground in some way, really, especially one of his size. Kids are too unpredictable, they already go off the pattern with human cast, with an animatronic it's way too dangerous. Something could go wrong with it on stage and it moves wrong, it could hit a kid if it's in the wrong place, kids frequently try to hit the cast member not just the other saber so kids could easily break it, push it over and more. Shy kids could be restrained and not be in position and attacking right when Grievous is timed to attack. Grievous isn't nearly as well known as Kylo or Vader, a lot of kids won't know who he is. I don't know how he would be able to interact more? Kylo, Vader, and Boba Fett all have a range of pre recorded lines they're able to chose from, I don't see how an animatronic, especially one thats particularly articulated, where all movements have to be carefully pre programed and timed, would have more interaction. When it can only say things at the same point of the show every time, it really isn't true interaction.

It would be nice if Mickey could talk during a meet and greet, because it’s quite lame to not hear him speak in the theme parks. I hate to spoil the magic and fantasy, but I remember hearing my mom tell me that there's a tape inside of the costume which makes the characters talk in stage shows and the possible meet and greets.
