As many packs as I've gone thru the one I keep going back to and has continuously lasted and surprised me is my medium Alice pack. The thing is a beast!
@FellsApprentice
@FellsApprentice 8 лет назад
I think an important thing to consider implementing with these kind of packs, or any "bug out" or go bag, is the "write off" policy. Essentially, building this pack and then considering everything in that pack as nonexistant. You don't take things out of the pack to use it for something else. They stay in that pack and don't come out until that time when you need it on the trail, or some other emergency comes along. Great video Dave, I always learn a lot from them.

I have found that cheap gear is sometimes the best gear because if I buy a very expensive item I tend to be very protective of it and if I loose my gear I don't feel as bad if I loose it. I tend to buy a happy medium items where quality and cost are even.

Back to the basics. Good stuff. What I refer to as my "Woods EDC" is a full 10C kit that fits on my my belt with a 5X7 nylon tarp, poncho, 55gal bag, 1qt water pouch, 3' aluminum foil, fishing kit, wire, first aid kit, ESEE Zancudo, fire kit in an Altoids tin (ferro rod, Fresnel lens, flint & steel, Bic, natural tinder, etc...), compass, water purification tabs, coffee filter, bandana, sew kit, duct tape, knife sharpener, stadium whistle, mirror, MagLite Solitaire, etc... A proper sheath knife (BHK Scout) next to that with a ferro rod and a Pathfinder Canteen Kit (canteen, cup, stove, food, water, filter, etc...) on the other side. Even if I lose my pack to those thieving Chupacabra mounted Jamaican Leprechauns from outer space, as long as I have my pants on, I my kit.

Thanks for the updated version of the 10 C's mentality. I watched the earlier version years ago and enjoyed it as well. Thanks for all the great information you teach and pass along to the rest of us.

I keep this in mind when I set up my pack. I've got a/n (incomplete) load that is about 25lbs for overnighting and longer bush trips. I took it out to Alaska a few weeks ago and ran around most of the day with no problem. Still filling in the gaps to finish it up and these videos you put out really help focus me and keep me from overpacking. Thanks a ton.

The "10 C's" is a great way to start a good survival pack. I often tell about Dave's 10 C's idea when talking to others about what to carry on hunts. A really good, simple kit that provides the necessities and is easily added to as a person wishes. Thaks for giving it to us Dave!
@dannyh9010
@dannyh9010 8 лет назад
Dave, I never really understood the importance of the sail needle in the 10 C kit, until I took your basic class. I must have dug a dozen painful splitters/thorns out of my hands that weekend! Tip: If you fold one edge of your hammock to the middle, then sit on the hammock, it is more flat and less bucket-like when you sit on it sideways.Danny, Pathfinder Basic Class of April, 2016. :)

This is the reason we wrote you recently about a new muzzleloading accessory we'd found, Dave. You really know how to simplify and sum up the equipment and the methodology behind each piece, but you're not afraid of modifying or adopting something if it meets your standards. Great job, looking forward to more in this series!

Very smart - they will light charred material. Good to remember that..I always questioned a magnifying glass in an emergency but if one has charred material (preparation) then one can succeed in making that warming fire which could save your life in a situation. Great job Sir! Thank You.

good video Dave..if you look for a german shooters pad..its the fold up sleeping pad that goes in the rear inside pouch of the ruck..it acts as a frame/pads you from gear in ruck..and is a very handy pull out quick wet ground pad..if ya cant find one i also cut a surplus U.S .army sleeping pad and slid it in to the slot does same job and comes in real handy when the ground is wet..thanks for the video really enjoy your vids..safe journeys

Excellent video Dave! It's interesting to see the evolution of something I heard you talk about years ago, when I watched on my old channel, to how it is now. I've noticed my gear is always changing and evolving as well, but what doesn't is the purpose those items are trying to fulfill, which like you said is the most important part about the 10 C's. Make sure the items fulfill specific functions and don't get hung up on brand just find what helps you effect those things the easiest.

I been watching you from the beginning, learned a ton, and after all the stuff you have tested, it's good to see what or how the 10 C's have changed. I've got some of the bullet proof stuff for my bag, and some light weight stuff cheap for my wife's bag. She is a stay at home mom, but if needs be she has in trunk. Looking forward to next vid, thank you

Greetings from Germany, there is is a foldable sleeping pad in German Military Surplus equipment. The bigger 65 Litres Backpack has a Sleeve on The Inside too which is meant too carry that pad which than supports The Backpack and makes it more comfortable. I guess the Sleeve on the model u show has the same purpose. I realy like your 10c system please keep on !

Absolutely love what you do, have trusted your skills and followed you for a long time. However I am sceptical that you would have really chosen that particular Mora. A 'Bushcraft Black' that you have championed for years is the obvious choice due to thickness of blade, resistance to rust, carbon steel construction, scandanavian grind and ability to throw sparks from flint along with it's cheap price and although not a full tang you have yet to ever break one, so for an EDC.... is a no brainer. So, why would you recommend a knife that is not even on the market yet, and has had very limited dirt time only as a prototype? Just because it is full tang? Not really enough really, maybe if it was carbon steel. I see this video as a bit of a transparent advert for a new Mora knife that is obviously earning you money. Bit sad really.
@DavidCanterbury
@DavidCanterbury 8 лет назад
Actually I have been using it for Months now and it has a thicker blade than the BB and it is Full tang, the trade off for full tang vs carbon is the no brainer to me as I can make all the char in the world with the first fire and I will probably never need the Carbon Steel in the short term emergency, the lack of need for Maintaining it as well as longevity of blade edge is the key to resource management, I spent many hours in Sweden sponging the knowledge of 40 year knife makers about this particular Steel and its qualities. It is not a recommendation but what I choose really the BB is a great blade but in my mind inferior in construction to a full tang-

If he was really intent on maximizing revenue out of you, he would have featured a PKS knife which is his own knife forge. He would then have urged you to go to his web store to order the saw, compass, PKS pack, ferro rod etc. He runs a business to support his family, but it's not his style to push product onto his viewers. Strange that you would accuse him of that. Bit sad really.
