Wow the Paris metro is extremely impressive. They never had long breaks of no construction like the NYC metro did. Your video is amazing by the way, as usual.
Actually there was a break between 1952 and 1970 (and even more, since the section that opened in 1952 had been started in 1940 but had been delayed because of WW2). But I agree that's not so long compared to NYC Subway's history 😅
Not exactly. Large parts of the RER network are just older suburb train lines that have been adapted (new stations, new underground sections in Paris, new connections between existing lines...). Many of these lines were built even before the metro was created. Some of these lines still exist today (there are 8 other lines that have not been integrated to the RER network), some of them have been abandoned (like the "Petite Ceinture", a circular line between lines 2 and 6 of the metro and the limits of the city), and also the tramway line T2 was created from an old train line that had been abandoned.
@@italixgaming915 exactly...but the central section under tunnel Paris was built in the 70's...for the majority of RER lines. The H,J,K,L,N,P, R,U are Transilien Line... they don't cross Paris ,but finished in a surface station as gare du nord. the F and G are kept for new RER Line It's so complicated ^^
@@italixgaming915 Exactly, this is the same as London, many lines will share tunnels. Tramlink, Overground, Thameslink, TfL Rail and probably others weren't built as part of the Underground but just incorporated into the network.
And in addition to the metro and the RER, there are the transiliens and the tramways too. And now they are building the "Grand Paris Express" with lots of new metro lines and extensions of existing lines.
@@coopera1427 That wasn’t a closure. That portion of the track was given to Transilien, which isn't a rapid-transit service like the others in the video
@@danyjanau7839 I was talking about the tracks, yes there probably was one or two station closures not shown here. But there were a lot of changes in the tracks name and ownership.
This is so cool! But I have a suggestion: what about putting a scale bar on the videos? A 1km scale bar for example. I say this because people who don't live in these cities probably don't know the true scale of these metro systems, so a scale bar would give more context and be really helpful to make us understand this better😄 Continue this great work!
That’s something that would be helpful for a lot of ppl. For example, Paris and Shanghai are only 1 numbered metro line off (Paris: 1-14; Shanghai: 1-13, 16-17), but the latter system is triple the size because the lines cover more area.
5:48 Who knows the joke about the RER A (a true story) ? When they were thinking about making this regional metro, the original name was : Metro Express Régional la Défense Etoile That makes the word M.E.R.D.E. (that means s*** in English). so they changed the name into Réseau Express Régional (RER)
I like how, within the City of Paris, all of the lines are connected to each other so that you can get from any part of the city to another... in America, even the best subway systems typically radiate outward from the center with little connections outside of the city center
Well it’s actually the case Paris is just a big city center 8 millions live in the « suburbs » and only 2 millions live in Paris « intra-muros » But Grand Paris Express goal is to make things better although some new lines won’t have too much traffic so some people are against them
Please do Berlin, Moscow, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Madrid, Lisbon, Rome, Stockholm, St. Petersburg, Shanghai, Singapore and other cities that have underground and overground metro systems and subways. The Paris metro subway as it has been extended does go lot further.
Chicago one kinda sucks, it hasn't grown since the 1950s. Imagine where it could have been today if the city invested in it and Chicago didn't suburbanize?
It's amazing how much of the metro was built so early on, especially since in the early days it was all pickaxes, shovels, and wooden carts pulled by mules.
What really helped early on is that, instead of tunelling like the british, we literally opened a trench in the roads, built the subways and closed it back up, making the work a lot easier (and cheaper) you can easily see the ones built this way as they follow existing roads
As an 100% Paris boy, i can tell you that what's coming for the next century will blow your mind if you were already impress by this one... Greater paris express is just the beginning
Amazing video! Its so amazing how dense other city networks are in comparison to some of the oldest systems in the US! It'd be interesting from a historical standpoint if you could do a video on the rise, fall, and rebirth of rail/busway transit in Los Angeles. Like the rise, consolidation, and fall of the interurban lines, then the rise of LA Metro and its related rail and busway segments
I love watching these videos, especially when I get to compare them to Toronto, which hasn't built a new subway line since 2003 😂. If I may make a suggestion, when you show a line being transferred to another line, highlight / bold / flash the line text. I had to rewind the video a couple of times when those changes happened because I couldn't notice it with all the different colours. Looking forward to Tokyo and Madrid. Cheers!
I was only 5 when I left Paris but I remember very well taking the metro everyday and seeing its evolution till my childhood was really amazing! You deserve way more subs!
For the line 8, I think, they're an error because it's "Maison Alfort Stade" x2, when the 2nd are "Maison Alfort les Juilliottes" other than that, great video!
Great video, but it lacks the mention of the Navette (shuttle line) between lignes bis, it used to exist at the pre-war times, and briefly in the 50s (to test the pneumatiques tires of the subway train).
It's really interesting to see that there were many lines transferred from one Ligne to another. Also this video makes the seemingly random intermingling of lines a bit more understandable.
Wow! Amazing work! I was actually thrilled to see the growth of the network throughout the years. There is a small error by the end in 2020: the line 14 extension goes further north, crosses the line 13 Asnières branch and RER C at Porte de Clichy, crosses the RER C again at Saint Ouen, and reaches the Saint Denis banch of line 13 at Mairie de Saint Ouen.
Now this is how you make a metro system!!! Always improving and adding new lines even today the Paris metro has some pretty ambitious and downright cool expansion plans for the near future *en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Paris_Express*
It's very interesting to know the story of the Metro and RER in Paris because I know this lines and the line 14 is excellent because it is automatic! Congratulations for the work. 👍😉👏🚇
The network was already very dense within central Paris by, say, 1960. There was little to add. If you go to Paris, you'll find that rhe city itself is pretty small and you're always close to a station. The connections to the suburbs are currently being expanded big time amd should be completed around 2030! :)
Last opening (line 14) occured only one month ago...It’s also wrongly drawn, the line intersects the NW branch of line 13 and the terminus is situated along the NE branch.
wow amazing video showing how the metro and the RER network developed i was surprised to see how far it goes from Paris to the large suburban areas and beyond
It's a pity you didn't show future developments, for example the extension of the lines 4, 12, 14 and 11, the new lines 15, 16, 17 and 18 and the extension of RER E to Mantes-La-Jolie, but I appreciate the animation, great video :)
Very good job! And impressive. Will you start including the Grand Paris Express (200 km under construction) and Trams Network which is becoming pretty dense and dynamic over recent yrs. Thanks.
Future plan mid time 2021: L4 Montrouge-Bagneux, L12 Front Populiere-Aubervilliers 2022: L11 Marie des Lilas-Rosny Bois Perrier 2024 Line 14 North to Saint Denis and south to Orly, Line 16 Saint denis-Clichy Montfermeile, Line 17 Saint Denis-Le bourget 2025: Line 15 South Noisy Champs-Pont de sevres There are new extensions and line from 2027 to 2030+
I love this videos, they are really pleasant to watch. Though I would recommend to include the stops on those maps (not the name nor stops-related explanations on the bottom, just maybe a circle or something in its location to have an idea of the impact of the catchment of that line)
Ehhhh not really. The line B and some parts of line C and D were already there, they just get transefered to RER. Lines A and E were build mostly from scratch tho.
Very cool video ! Though you're gonna have to update it every year from now to the early 2030s with RER E and Metro Ligne 14 extensions, and the addition of Lignes 15, 16, 17, and 18
The RER in Paris and the Overground in London are similar to the direct operation of private railways, JR and subways in Tokyo. Tokyo's subway system alone is worse than Paris', but it's the best in the world when it comes to rail networks.
Great video im so happy that I got one of the last “tickets” as one of the first 1000 subscribers when watching the NYC Subway video. Thanks for your great videos
And now updated to today : Line 4 extends to Bagneux Lucie Aubrac Line 12 extends to Mairie d'Aubervilliers Future projects : line 11 extension to Rosny-Bois-Perrier Line 14 extension to St Denis (can't remember the exact name) Construction of lines 15 through 18 as a new transportation method throughout the suburbs
I love these animated videoes. Thank you for a great job! I would love to see Taipei MRT and Copenhagen (that's an easy one) done soon. Thanks once again!
It would be more interesting if you had included the tramway extension, too. Paris-Île de France has build dozens of new tramway lines, which are additions to the metro and RER net.
Dang, imagine if compact cities like Boston, DC or San Francisco had a metro system just as extensive as the Paris Metro??? But then again Paris is even more dense than New York and the other cities mention have densities lower than 20,000 ppl/mi^2 but are still denser than most US cities.
Nice vid but the last expansion of the line 14 at 10:29 is wrong tho. Mairie de saint ouen is way up north; as the name implies, it is located in Saint-Ouen, not in Paris as the map shows
I love your amazing work! I'd love to see my city (Rio de Janeiro) in one of your videos, but then it would be as short as 2 minutes hahahahahah However, São Paulo and Buenos Aires might be a bit more interesting as well. Keep up the good work! :D
Also line 14 Extension to Marie de Saint-Ouen in the video is incorrect since the line runs via Porte de Clichy and not via La fourche and connects with RER C in Saint Ouen RER C and Marie de Saint-Ouen is on Line 13 before Carrefour Pleyel not near La Fourche
