Scientist on the BBC in the 70's: consequent to the Clean Air Act 1956 the bark of the plane trees became lighter, thus turning the tables on the vulnerability of the lighter moth and darker moth to predators, eventually the lighter ones becoming more prolific. Proof of evolution. My question: what is the lighter moth evolving into? Answer: it isn't. It's a moth. It's still 'just' a moth. Whenever I post this I get the response that I don't understand evolution.
@luish1498
@luish1498 Месяц назад
The change in the coloration of the moths, from darker to lighter, is an example of adaptation through natural selection. In areas where the environment became more polluted and industrial, the lighter-colored moths were better camouflaged against the lighter-colored tree trunks, making them less visible to predators. This allowed the lighter-colored moths to survive and reproduce more successfully, leading to an increase in their population over time. However, this process of adaptation does not mean the moths are "evolving into" a new species. They are still the same species of moth, with the same fundamental biological characteristics. The changes in coloration are simply adaptations that allow the moths to better survive and thrive in their environment, but they do not represent the emergence of a new species or a significant evolutionary transformation. They remain the same species, with the same basic biological makeup, but with some adaptations that have allowed them to better cope with changes in their environment. The example of the lighter-colored moths illustrates the process of adaptation, but not necessarily the broader concept of evolution, which involves the gradual change in the genetic makeup of a population over multiple generations, potentially leading to the emergence of new species. In this case, the moths are still very much the same species, just with some adaptive changes in their coloration.

Answer to your question. It has evolved into a darker colored animal. That makes it a different animal that it was before. A small change like color isn't enough to warrant reclassification into a new species. But this has happened over just a few score years. Continuing changes over time can and does result is so many changes that the organism so differs from what it was that it would not longer be identified as the same species. OTOH, if an organism is well adapted to its environment, the species can exist for millions of years with little change, until a significant change in its environment causes it to change or die out.
@luish1498
@luish1498 Месяц назад
@@RodericGurrola Evolution consists of changes in the heritable traits of a population of organisms as successive generations replace one another. It is populations of organisms that evolve, not individual organisms. The moths are a classic illustration of the principles of evolution by natural selection. Natural selection can drive changes in the coloration of a species over time in response to environmental changes. Changes in the environment can drive evolutionary adaptations in the coloration of a species, as natural selection favors the individuals with the most effective camouflage and survival advantages. you can see the photos by yourself and i think you are referering to haeckels drawings.

Tim made a good point about the good things that man has done for the environment. An example would be the reclamation of hundreds of thousands of acres after the Mt St. Hellns eruption. Weyerhaeuser, a timber management company, went in shortly thereafter and planted tens of thousands of acres with young trees. 20 years later there was already a thriving ecosphere where they planted. The adjacent government owned land , where no reclamation was done, today looks like a moonscape.

@worldwithout72

@frosted1030 I have participated before in a community garden when I lived in the big city. I currently live in the woods and do grow some of my own food in addition to the forest And yes, it is a simple solution, but one that does take a lot of money, time, and energy to make happen. When I lived in the big city, we had plenty of empty lots around town that the city could have bought and turned into gardens or small orchards. All the food could be given to local food banks or soup kitchens. Also, these gardens would need people to tend them so you 5 create a few more jobs at the same time. Another good aspect, too, is that not only will more plants suck up more CO2, but it also means more oxygen to dilute the amount of remaining CO2. And yes, I realize the science behind this may be a little more complicated, but still a solid suggestion to help address the problems of this world, despite what negative nellies like yourself think about it. I'm at least trying to think of realistic ways to help tackle something that many feel is a big concern. Unlike mo's like Gavin Newsom, who, the day after he signs into law, a mandate that after a certain year, all cars in his state were required to be electric, the city start going through brownouts because they can't supply enough electricity to provide for the states current needs. I'd sure hate to see how it will be when all citizens need to charge electric vehicles all day, evey day.

In 2022 we generated 6,343 million metric tons of greenhouse gasses. A MATURE tree will scrub about 48 pounds of c02 a year. The math says that's about three hundred billion MATURE trees. For scope, the USA has about 228 billion trees. You are only 72 billion mature trees off. First, where will you put them, second how will you maintain them? These are practical questions.

So variation in organisms is a good thing because it keeps them "strong". How does it make a species "stronger" if there is only a loss of genetic information?
@alantasman8273
@alantasman8273 Месяц назад
Read up on dominant and recessive traits and how they are passed on. . Stronger refers to expressed traits that are better suited toward survival in the environmental conditions an organism is living. For instance long haired dogs with traits expressed like long hair are better prepared for colder environments while short hair dogs thrive better in warmer. Mutations are a loss of information and less variation occurs as genetic information is lost. As long as there is a gene pool providing sources to overcome mutation load, those genetic traits will continue to be in play. Cheetahs provide an example of a species that has inbred so much without new outside genetic information being available that very soon they may become extinct.

And that same trait of long hair is not "stronger" if the animal is in the tropics. So "stronger" is relative to the environment. ["Mutations are a loss of information ... "] and less variation occurs as genetic information is lost."] This is what I don't understand. If a short haired species evolves into a long haired species because the population's environment changes, what is the "loss"? The short haired trait? But isn't the long hair trait a "gain"? How is there a "loss" of overall genetic "information"? [... and less variation occurs as genetic information is lost."] According to whom? Answers in Genesis? The Bible doesn't say that and I'm not aware of any scientific study showing this either. Are you trying to say that organism are less likely to adapt to their environment over time? That a breed of dog that became longer haired over time could not become shorter haired again if moved back into a warmer environment? What is the evidence for that? ["As long as there is a gene pool providing sources to overcome mutation load, those genetic traits will continue to be in play. Cheetahs provide an example of a species that has inbred so much without new outside genetic information being available that very soon they may become extinct."] I think you are mixing up a number of concepts. I don't know who wrote the headline for the article (Humans are driving a new kind of evolution in animals), but whoever wrote it is wrong. This is not a "new" kind of evolution, this is just evolution. When an environment changes some organisms do better, and others do worse. It doesn't matter what the cause of the change of environment is. The article points to environmental changes caused by humans. That is relatively new. Up until the industrial age, humans didn't have much effect beyond the local environment. That doesn't mean they didn't have any effect at all. Agriculture changes the local environment to favour certain plants and animals. With the industrial age came the ability to make larger scale changes. Nowadays we are making changes to the global environment. The article in question points this out. As far as the comment by the presenter at the beginning that "natural selection isn't evolution", that is just silly. Natural selection is a part of evolution. In evolution, a random mutation proposes, and the environment disposes. It is a simple fact that most often, the environment disposes by driving the organism to extinction. Be happy, you are one of the 1% of organisms that have survived. You carry in your body a strand of DNA that has existed since the beginning of life on earth. That makes you a walking, talking museum of the evolutionary history, not just of mankind, but of all living things.

The dna is transferred to our children and of course it gets worse when my child with a certain dna problem marries one with another. Thus degredation of humans is just getting worse. Now... the otherside... If you think of the records that gets broken daily these days... for instance 100m sprint. Breaking such a record means that you ran faster than any other recorded person in the world and thr ones the lived loooong before you. Wont that be seen as becoming better?

It only means that people train harder to force their bodies to adapt to such things like the 100m sprint, and often times only beat it by milliseconds, sometimes tenths of seconds. Very rarely do you see more than a second beat in sprint records, because humans have a speed plateau. It's an inverted graph. And it's easier to be able to reach those heights today because we have better health technology and knowledge, as well as better options for food, compared to even 50 years ago.

@@mizmera While it's true that certain genetic conditions can be passed down from parents to children, it's not accurate to say that humanity is degrading genetically. Genetic diversity exists, and while some conditions can pose challenges, they don't necessarily mean humans are getting worse. Additionally, breaking records in sports doesn't equate to genetic improvement. Genetic changes occur over vast periods, not within individual lifetimes. While it's tempting to draw parallels between genetic conditions and athletic records, they're fundamentally different phenomena. Genetic conditions represent variations within the human gene pool, influenced by factors like mutation, genetic drift, and natural selection. The presence of genetic conditions doesn't necessarily indicate degradation; rather, they contribute to genetic diversity, which is essential for species survival. On the other hand, athletic records are achievements within a specific context and don't reflect broader genetic trends. Understanding genetics requires a nuanced perspective that considers the complex interplay of genetic factors over generations.

When trying to unravel the mysteries of reality, we start with what we can observe, and draw conclusions, observe, draw conclusions, rinse/repeat until we can't go any further. Then we propose solutions -- theories that fit what we've found so far, and we find ways to test whether our theories predict reality beyond that point. When a theory makes correct predictions thousands and thousands of times consecutively, it gradually comes to be considered "fact" Examples include evolution by natural selection, General relativity and Quantum mechanics. Their predictions are always correct. Where some might confront the mystery beyond current knowledge and say "well, we're looking at the mind of God," we say "guess we're going to have to wait for better research techniques." You look at the world, see the same things we see, and explain them as best you can with conclusions that don't contradict your Bronze Age/early Iron Age instruction manual. When you run out of explanation, everything beyond that is "God". The human mind evolved to create answers. We draw conclusions when we have the tools to do so. You imagine gods, angels, demons, spirits, things you've never seen, and attribute causality to them. You start with the answer you want, usually "God did it", and then cherry pick "facts" that fit, until you have a narrative that sort of fits a story written down 2500 years ago, encapsulating a 5000 year old oral tradition of a southwest Asian herding society. There may or may not be a relatively high proportion of atheists among evolutionary biologists, but atheism and evolutionary biology are not in the least bit inter-dependent. They are not even comparable. To suggest otherwise is blatantly dishonest. There are plenty of Christians (and followers of other religions) who recognise the overwhelming evidence that supports the theory of evolution. @@Torby4096 That is false. Before around 1819 only the genes for the lighter moths existed. Science has identified the genetic mutation which occurred then that produced the dark (carbonaria) form of the moth. The mutation was so beneficial in the soot covered environment of Industrial England by the 1870's the dark form came to make up over 90% of the moth population. After the 1950's when most of the pollution was cleaned up the dark form of camouflage wasn't as effective and the light colored moths increased back to a roughly 50/50 ratio with the dark ones. The whole episode is a classic example of evolution in action: - A mutation produced new genetic information causing a new benefit (dark color) for moths in the local sooty environment - natural selection caused the new beneficial mutation to spread through the population. - when the environment changed again a previously existing deleterious genetic feature (light color) became beneficial again. Assertion: "Natural selection removes genetic information that's already been there... it can explain the survival of the fittest but not the arrival of the fittest." Correction: Natural selection is a mechanism of evolution that favors the survival and reproduction of individuals with advantageous traits. Evolution is the change in the genetic composition of a population over time, which includes the introduction of new genetic variations through mutations. These new genetic variations can then be acted upon by natural selection. Assertion: "The peppered moth is an example of genetic variation, not evolution... it's just a moth and it hasn't turned into anything else." Correction: The peppered moth is a classic example of natural selection where the frequency of different color morphs changed in response to environmental changes (industrial soot darkening tree bark). This is a clear instance of evolution at work, as it shows a change in the allele frequencies within the moth population over time. Assertion: "Animals will never evolve fins to swim because they don't have the genetic information." Correction: While it is true that major evolutionary changes like evolving fins require new genetic variations, these variations can arise through mutations, gene duplication, and other genetic mechanisms. Evolution is a cumulative process over many generations, not an instantaneous one. Assertion: "Unprecedented CO2 rising 10 times faster than any time in recorded history is exaggerated." Correction: Climate scientists use ice core data to reconstruct past atmospheric conditions. These methods are well-validated and show that the current rate of CO2 increase is indeed unprecedented in the context of Earth's recent geological history. Assertion: "Fossilization happens rapidly and is a testament to the global flood of Noah." Correction: Fossilization is a process that typically takes thousands to millions of years under specific conditions. The dating of fossils using radiometric methods provides robust evidence for the Earth's long history, far beyond the few thousand years proposed by young-Earth creationists. Assertion: "Animals reproduce within the created kinds that God put in place... this is variation within kinds, not evolution." Correction: The concept of "created kinds" is not a scientific one. Modern biology recognizes species and populations, which can change and diverge over time through evolutionary processes. The observable changes within species (microevolution) can, over long periods, lead to the formation of new species (macroevolution).

What about amphibians that can pop in and out of water ? Have you never heard of elephants, or rhinoceroses, or hippopotamuses or crocodiles, of whom lions are fearful ? Or what about large herds of buffalo ? or hyenas ? Not to mention how long a lion might be expected to survive in Antarctica or in the higher reaches of the Andes... And then if, as you suggest, lions did devour everything they could lay their claws on, there’d soon be nothing left for them to eat and they’d die out... leaving the place for those creatures that they were not able to catch. @@williamrodgers2476 That is not an accurate statement of evolution theory. "Selective breeding" is something done by humans to develop certain traits in certain species, like dogs, cows, cats, horses and grains. There is no basis for concluding genetic information is lost. As I understand it, a great deal of our DNA is "unused" but not necessarily lost. In any even even if genetic information is lost, it is also gained. Selective breeding (or in nature, by "natural selection") may result in a race horse being less able to pull a heavy weight, but it has gained speed. Mutations are probably more often harmful, in the sense that it does not result in very good adaption by the organism, and it dies without reproduction. When I ask if unleashing two bears to tear forty-two boys to pieces for laughing at Elisha's bald head is perhaps not a little disproportionate, I get no answer.
