Ewloe castle dates back to 1257 and believed to have been built by Llewellyn Ap Gruffud.
Stunning walk through this ancient woodland near Connahs Quay.
How it used to look when it was built.

I was up in Connahs Quay a few months ago. Never heard of Ewloe castle. I'll put it on my list for places to visit. Cheers. (They way things are going I think we may have to rebuild some of castles for defence against the maniacs in Cardiff and London.)

@crosseyedone I have the skills, and where I don't I learn them. Currently building a hill-fort in South Wales.

all those rocks quarried lugged there and then built by hand. It would take a lot of dedication.

That was a lovely walk. North Wales is a great place for castles, so much history has still survived, well built considering the tools they had, fascinating. Years ago NZ was aspirational but not now.

Most of the castles in Wales were built by the English to help combat those pesky welsh rebels,😂 however some were built by Welsh elites. Apparently they used to wreak havoc for the English forces because they would use Gorilla tactics to attack the English. That’s what I learnt on my recent trip to Pembroke castle not long ago. Pembrokeshire used to be know as “little England” as it was ruled by a English king for decades, that’s why in Pembrokeshire most of the towns and streets names are English not welsh. Also there’s more castles in per square mile in Wales than anywhere else i the world, never mind the U.K. bit of useless history for you there😂

I went to Wales once, I went to a castle called "White Castle" I wonder if they had to change the name in case it offended someone?

If you want to know why they built it - bear in mind that there were still people like bill_gates and george_soooros around in those days.

So much better than going into the Kiwi bush to see some grassy circular dip in the ground, twenty feet wide and two foot deep, and being told, ‘That’s an ancient Maori _Pa_ site!’, and then, pointing to the left, ‘And they grew their potatoes over there!’ 🙄

Sounds riveting😂 when they were digging holes in the ground our ancestors were building castles and forts with advanced weaponry and even chemical warfare back then. Hot tar and super heated sand was used to kill their enemies. Yes super heated sand. I learnt that on a visit to Pembroke castle in the southwest coast of Wales.

@@Levi-ty7is - you’re right and I considered editing my comment ‘cos it was a bit dismissive of Māori culture. I didn’t mean to question its legitimacy and it is actually very cool, like the greenstone carvings and the _marae_ wood-carved statues with paua shell eyes. But by the same token, you don’t get ancient stone battlements or centuries-old rock walls and pubs and abbeys and stuff in NZ . . .
