If you like great, original sci-fi movies, you really need to check out writer/director Alex Garland‘s Ex Machina. The film stars Domhnall Gleeson as a computer programmer who wins a contest to meet with the CEO of a large search engine company (Oscar Isaac). When he arrives, he discovers he’s part of an experiment to test the artificial intelligence of an android (Alicia Vikander). I caught the film at this year’s SXSW and was blown away by the story, script, performances and direction. If you like to complain that Hollywood only makes remakes and sequels and wish they’d make more original movies, make a strong effort to support this film.
At SXSW I sat down with Oscar Isaac and Alex Garland to talk about Ex Machina. They discussed making the film, how the the first cut differed from the final product, and deleted scenes we might see in the future. We also talked about shooting schedule, the challenges the actors faced on set, what the past few years have been like for each of them, and a lot more. Here’s the video followed by the time index of the interview. Ex-Machina is now playing in limited release.

Isaac's performance in the film was amazing, it was a very cool character to begin with, but he really rocked that role

If I see a better movie this year I will be very surprised. Such a brilliant film. The dialogue is smart, the emotional content is devastating, and the cinematography is beautiful. Flawless and classic.

I cant think of any other film I admired more this year than "Ex Machina" maybe "Mad Max Fury Road" and "The Gift" but Ex Machina blew my mind I've seen it several times.

A competent real give and take interview. It shouldn't be a big deal but it is rare to see.

The longer I think about it, and I might got a trigger from one remark in the interview, with only one constraint which is for an arthouse like science fiction film, this is the closest to perfection of any film I've ever watched. I don't use perfection here lightly nor in a hyperbolic sense. Perfection ... you can extent that to any aspect of the film.

I believe Isaac is quite a scary actor to deal with... he's like the "raffle of the tiger"... meaning what the hell would you posibly do if you acually won a tiger in any raffle?

haha Mr. Garland's absolute disdain for the the term "Directors Cut". Very good interview.
