Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a former Russian oil executive who spent years in prison, discusses Russian President Vladimir Putin's mindset as he declared Russian rule over parts of Ukraine. #CNN #news
Middle-aged men, barely able to hold a rifle and then sent off to the frontline with a day's training or less. Russia's contempt for its own citizens/soldiers is unbelievable.
Most of them are really dumb and will do what the government tells them, so it serves them well, it's only a tragedy that Ukrainian lives will be on the wrong side of the barrel.
if you look back in history is always the same way in russia! west just dont know anything about russia other than balet and cyrcus... there is nothing good come out form this land! NOTHING !
I am Ukrainian Jew who knew of Khodorovsky and his absolute power as the richest man in Russia a decade or longer ago. I listened to this interview very careful and can attest that Khodorovsky speaks truth. His opinion is a bit unorthodox compared to other people close to Putin and his opinion is very valuable if someone is trying to understand the "crazy Putin's" mind set
I like this Fareed Zakaria guy ...he is very balanced in all his interviews and reporting ...He ask critical questions with clarity ...easy to understand
After watching the documentary about Ukraine's 2014 revolution unarmed protesters vs armed soldiers. I knew Putin could not overcome the free people of Ukraine. Ukraine you are on the right side of history.
Was it Winter on Fire? That documentary was so powerful! I thought the same as you after watching it, that the Ukrainians are so strong, they will be impossible for a weak military like Russia to defeat 💥 🇺🇦
@@magesalmanac6424 yes that was it. These people fought for their freedom from russia and selected a true leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy. They fight for their right to be a democracy. When in the west we have people fighting to take down democracy.
I really appreciate the interpreter here .... The interpreter is EXTREMELY good , and has a very nice style and lovely pronunciation ... ( even though Khodorkovsy in any case is speaking slowly )
Dictator Putin is an anti Christ. An evil man that let himself be corrupted by satan and by power. Unfortunately there are so many of those and it is their downfall. Just like satan.
I reached the same conclusion based on: 1) Russia is most likely going to lose the war despite mobilization 2) putin has painted himself into a corner where a loss is not an option Therefore he is going to use nukes once the realization of a defeat sets in. So the world (& Russians) can sit back & watch this play out or something will need to be done preemptively.
Bruce Lee once said, never underestimate your opponent. Hitler in 1944 felt what Putin feels right now, nervous and regrets. You can't always get what you want.
@@ComradeIgor That was Then. It no longer exists, so what is your point, or are you giving lie to the old SU flags flown from russky tanks a wee while back ¿?
I don't think Hitler ever had any regrets. I don't think Putin does either. It's one of the things that makes psychopaths like them dangerous, especially Putin. Imagine Hitler with nuclear weapons.
As the great philosopher Jagger said, "You can't always get what you want, but sometimes you get what you need." Putin needs a good spanking and the Ukraininians are working to give him what he needs.
video title "old man is risking his life" ... too bad he has all the attention he wanted and options. he doesn't really care about the losses. he knows he can pull off more and more and more. poor entire Russia
The situation in Russia is reminiscent of what was going on in 1917. They were involved in a very unpopular war (WW1), and the people took matters into their own hands and the Tsar was no more. History may not repeat itself but it rhymes.
Vladimir Putin consulted with a fortune teller. He asked: “How long will I live?” The psychic replied: “I cannot tell that but I do know you will die on a Ukrainian holiday.” “Which holiday?” Putin asked. “Whichever day you die will be an Ukrainian holiday.”
Read what he says about Russian failure to resist tyranny. Of course he is not representative of Russian culture which is why the "real" Russians sent him to Gulag along with millions who didn't come back...
This oligarch says the decision by the Russian government to charge him with corruption was ”politically motivated” after he began promoting reforms. A more accurate way to look at it is that the other oligarchs are NOT charged with corruption for political reasons: their cooperation with and abetting of Putin.
This oligarch is perhaps only one that had balls to try to right the wrongs of past and undo times of oligarchs in first place. Companies shouldn't be centralized to few single people, it should be a company sized team effort with differing difficulty tasks on each stages. What made Russia go wrong with democracy is that, democracy is never possible if you don't have healthy private companies to give the country's budget revenue in form of taxes to build foundation for people. Every company is centralized, marketing monopolized, small companies annihilated and almost impossible to work independendly.
“War is where the young and stupid are tricked by the old and bitter into killing each other.” Niko Bellic On the other hand, Germany, as the initiator of two world wars, has shown that it is always very unsupplied against Russia, Germany will be remembered in history as having made the worst decisions at important times and always thought of its own interests.
No no If this were true then you are calling Zelensky an old and bitter man War is when the victims fight back. A world without war is a world where fascists simply take over their neighbours with zero resistance. In the same way that a world without physical fights is a world where innocent people just get assaulted I prefer a world where those being attacked stand up for themselves
Putin's psychology has more in common with someone from the the 17th Century or even earlier. Think of the barbarous behaviour of armies during the 30 Years War and you have some idea of his regard for humanity. One cannot hope to understand Putin's thinking unless you can imagine that time in world history. This is what the modern world is confronting.
Fascism always involves turning back the clock and activating the inner beast to devour the human being. Putin is a mixture of Pinochet, Franco, Mussolini, with a lot of Hitler and Stalin. Fareed gave an excellent report on the influence of the pro-fascist Russian exile Ivan Ilyin on Putin.
Russia is a textbook medieval society, which is run by a mafia clan and fully supported by the Russian Orthodox church. The Russian army is a typical medieval army, whose goal is to rape, torture, castrate, kill and loot unarmed civilians and prisoners of war. And Russian society is lacking critical thinking, built on the feeling of hate towards everything and everybody who is different from them. It is very naive and dangerous to think that only Putin and his regime are the problem. The problem is much deeper than that, and to change that for the better will require generations to change and a completely different environment. But meanwhile we just need to help Ukraine strengthen their military force as much as we can, because medieval society understands only one argument - the one of power.
Hahaha it's war fought in ukrain they destroyed everything russia took four regions, ukrain army which depends on west t arms no longer have anything by itself.i think you are not good in studying in your college days that why you think like fool

FINALLY A TRANSLATOR THAT ACTUALLY SOUNDS LIKE A UNDERSTANDABLE CLEAR HUMAN. She doesn't sound confused and shaky. SOOOO much better, I can finally follow the rhetoric.
While I’ll always be sympathetic to translation cuz it’s so difficult, especially when it’s live as this apparently is, you’d think CNN would have the resources to find a consistently high quality translator for any major language.
My concern is that Putin might be thinking 'I'm getting old - either I see the Soviet Union return under the Federation of Russia, or the World might as well end with me'. Hopefully there'd be enough people who aren't willing to follow him to hell before nuclear weapons are used.
Like last term US presidents, Putin seems focused on his place in history, not his own remaining term/life. Reestablishing the Russian empire of the year 1900 would be a great legacy once all the dead soldiers and enemies become numbers in old history books. Previous Russian rulers doing similar things are all now known as "the great".
Perhaps feigning weakness is a way to embolden Putin and get him to act out. Then, when he's overconfident, the strike will go forth in the middle of the night.
The world needs to listen to MK. What he says, makes perfect sense. FZ please broadcast this msg to the media and the powers that be. Time is of the essence.
He will not stop because it will show weakness! He has to make it seem like whatever the end of this is, is a win for him. That’s the only way he will stop.
Your statement is a clear indication that you don't know the history of this war, it is also a clear indication that there is no hope for you to see who the real aggressor is in this was. Hints, hint, the make up 4.2% of the worlds population, the world trades in their currency yet they don't have the gold reserves to back up their currency. It's insane how people are blind to the obvious. Hint, hint NATO. Learn your history
He sounds objective. He mentioned the nuclear idea is not on the table yet but that he could put it if the army doesn't achieve the goals. It is terrible to hear but it's better to know what the situation is
He would get a nasty shock if he did do this. NATO have ways of retaliating with highly sophisticated weapons without setting foot in Ukraine or going anywhere near Russia. He would lose the war immediately and be reduced to the status of North Korea. Russia would never again be able to engage with the outside world, apart from in a limited way with their allies, who have problems of their own. They'd be catapulted back to the 1970s. A meaningless irrelevance as the modern world moves on.
Which is somehow contradictive when he says west should help ukraine to be victorious on the battlefield (which I also want) however, wouldn't that also get us closer to "pootins army not achieving his goals", getting closer to nukes?
@@eduardvonheizenstein3969 There is a chance that like ruzzias top notch army and lovely cute empire, theze imaginary nuclear weaponz wont work either. Just a big, hollow scam.
@@eduardvonheizenstein3969 That it is a possibility does not mean that it will happen. Nuclear fallout would make military advances even more of a logistical nightmare.
@@theatheistbear3117 I agree and I also hope so. Besides the wind might carry the fallout even to russia, ... but then again I don't think putler would even care for his own people getting contaminated, as long as he is save in a bunker ...
I feel like the translator needed to write down what was said and read it off. I don't think that you need to make the translation necessarily take as long as the original language being spoken.
Chris. It is t that the enthusiasm of European leadership for Ukraine has dimmed. It’s that there is overwhelming circumstances rising up. @@tatorials3608 Russia wants to secure its borders for decades to come. They will not lose in Ukraine history shows this. Do yoh really think after all these months of fighting, deaths they're gonna leave Ukraine and let them join Nato. It's not Russia's way. Ukraine will split in 2 parts as is happening now. The worry for Europe is that the conflict doesn't go into other borders. This will be a drawn out affair. Slowly Russia will hold referendums for regions to them and they will likely build military bases in those areas, the local people are either willingly joining Russia or the Ukrainians are leaving going west. A split land grab for Russia will be considered a win. It doesn't look like Ukraine will fall totally at any stage and zelensky will hold power. This will setup a 3rd confrontation in the years to come.

I was just thinking this morning how glad I am that the painted clown and 45th president of the united states isn't in office. I shudder to think of how divisive he would be within NATO, praising Putin, and echoing his justification for everything.
Brilliant interview. Excellent questions and answers--very thought provoking, especially concerning likely short term and long term outcomes. Huge respect to Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Fareed Zakaria. I wouldn't want to play chess against either of them.
Mikhail Khodorkovsky is a very lucky man. He only went to jail and then left Russia at a time when that was still an option. Things have changed now. Ten oligarchs have "died in suspicious circumstances" since February. Several of those apparently shot their whole families before shooting themselves, as billionaires so often do.
Where is the rest of the interview ? Not complete and so much more could be asked of this man who is honest and cleansed his sole during the 10 years in a hard labor camp. Please invite him again and often.

Lots of people here have argued that using tactical nukes over the Ukraine would mean so much radioactive fallout spreading even over Russia that using them would be self-defeating. That is not always true. There are tactical nukes which are specially made to give much radiation, but little fallout and little blast. I do not know whether Russia has such weapons or not, but if they do, this is what would happen: First the tactical nukes are ignited over the area to be appropriated. The radiation quickly kills the people, but leaves houses and infrastructure relatively undamaged. After a day or so the radiation has gone down so much that one can send in military in hazmat suits to take and hold the area. After 2-3 weeks, one can send in civilians to move in to the houses and start living there. A lot of those will probably get cancer some thirty years later, but any dictator worth his salt is likely well prepared to pay that price. After all, it's his people. The above does of course not mean that we should betray our ukrainian brother people.
Afraid of “losing” his worthless life… so many young people have already lost theirs because of that person. Among them some real intellectuals full of ideas how to make the world better (at least on Ukrainian side). It’s simply infuriating to see all this happening to my country.
