Elvis Presley Fan-Made Cassette Tapes, Soundboards, Audience Recordings, and Analog Audio Restoration Discussion - including tapes from Jim Curtin's collection!
Many in-the-know fans have wondered why both the bootlegs and the official label have had so many problems with speed and pitch issues on Elvis releases over the years, and for good reason: when they buy a CD, they want it to sound right! In this episode, Jamie and John talk about why issues with the analog format are so wide-spread, why the digital age makes things both easier and more challenging to restore, and what the EAP Society could possibly do to help! In addition, the guys take some detours to look through and talk about Jim Curtin's cassette collection!

You are not being fair and a bit mis-leading on the Cassette Tape format . 99% of the reason these old audience tapes run at different speeds is because of the recorders that were used at the time. They were cheap hand held tape recorders that were meant to be used for speech dialogue presentations - Not MUSIC. Most of these used 4 "C" cell batteries (6volt) and as the batteries wore down and their voltage lowered so did the motor voltage that was necessary to keep a steady speed, and caused major WOW during recordings. Secondly most of the tapes that were being used were cheap low quality K-Mart type brands that do not run smoothly across the head path. This is just a few reasons these cassettes are so awful, and the main reason you have this video to begin with. There are many Cassette players that can make recording that are almost indistinguishable for CD's such as Nakamichi recorders and Harmon Kardon which has a model CD-491 that has a 20-20,000Hz frequency range with any tape formulation. To say Cassette is a bad format is a bit harsh- It's like saying all cars are bad because you drive a Datsun. These people who made these records at these concerts were not professionals nor did they have any quality equipment so that makes analogue a terrible format?? -- See my point. I love your upload guys you made a lot of hits, but I'm afraid you missed on this one.

Actually, while we don't go into detail (love the detail on your comment, btw! I'm going to pin it for that reason), we do talk about different players/recorders affecting the speed. And we didn't get too specific on one format because we're not just talking about the cassette tape format - reel-to-reel recorders, which are also part of this video, are affected in a similar way (speed, not the format's indended usage, obviously). Like we said, this is just a "basics 101 overview" for folks that don't get why this happens with both live and studio recording releases. In future videos, we'll get into more specifics - and you touched on some wonderful info here!

That’s a very interesting, informative and useful explanation and I appreciate your comment here. Maybe this has something to do with some of the FTD cd’s that also suffer this consequence?! I know those soundboard recordings were merely done as a reference point, not for retail or public consumption. Thanks mate. 😊

Its Friday evening in Melbourne Australia. I'm enjoying a glass of the best Barossa Valley wine from South Australia listening to the Blue Hawaii sound track and up comes your latest upload. Elvis Presley is one of those rare human beings who brings happiness to the world. Happy Friday from down under folks. Cheers 🍷

Wow guys, thanks so much for this Video! I really enjoyed listening to this...fascinating! I learned a LOT!! (particularly as I collect as many of the Elvis soundboard as I can get my hands on). I was shocked to learn that they were recorded onto Tape! Which is fascinating to think what FTD has done, getting such great quality out of a lot of the soundboard releases! 😮🫢😲 What an absolute "treasure trove" that Jim Curtain case contains!! What an acquisition, Jamie!! 😲

@paulgwyn7836 I love the passion, Paul - but don't forget, every fan approaches all of this stuff from different places, and we all have our own learning journey and blind spots when it comes to all this. It's why we make these intro videos (when we remember to, lol): to help get folks up to speed. 😁

@paulgwyn7836 I meant CASSETTE tape, Paul, as opposed to Reel-to-reel tape. Because, if Cassette tape, I guess I was a little 'surprised' by the preservation and quality, the FTD 'Compilers' have extracted, for a lot of their Soundboard releases! 😉👍

You guys wanna hear how an Elvis concert should sound? Pick up a copy of the March 21, 1976 concert from Cincinnati, Ohio. The old boot was called, “Holding Back The Years”, but it got re-issued as, “A New Kind of Rhythm”. 😊Kick ass sound. 😊

Excellent video and great topic! Always been on my mind especially with MRS soundboards. One of my record players spins a bit too fast, but not fast enough to notice. However when I play a MRS record on it, Elvis sounds like Alvin the chipmunk. Ever heard Alvin sing Hound Dog? Lol! Anyway, thank you again from Dallas!

Thank you!! And absolutely; we'll be diving into the tapes at some point, for sure! Thanks to our members, we got a handy cassette transfer device that I finally like the quality of, so it will let us compare to existing sources more easily. 😁

I saw an interview with RCA secretary Joan Deary around the 10th anniversary of Aloha feom Hawaii. Joan said she taped the show in a closeted area, I imagine on a soundboard. Both shows were videotaped, I believe the first Rlvis shows videotaped without film. On tour eas filmed one year earlier in 1972. I am not an audio video expert, but I wondered why they didn't just transfer the audio off the videotape. I think the quality sound would be better than the soundboard.
@EAPSociety
@EAPSociety 11 месяцев назад
Interesting, Robert! I'll have to look into that, because Aloha was taped in multi-track, as were the On Tour shows. The video does have audio, too, but is mono (much like a soundboard).
@EAPSociety
@EAPSociety 10 месяцев назад
I'm guessing she was talking about the multitrack recording. That would make the most sense, I'd think.

Great video guys, this is a topic that deserves a lot of discussion. As for myself - I do not buy FTD's SBDs anymore. Mainly because of the price, but also because of the poor mastering. There's so much clipping on the soundboards nowadays, and if you EQ a tape running quite slow or fast, it sounds odd when you correct it as best you can. If FTD can't bother trying to make the speed _more_ right than it is, at least present a flat transfer of the tape. That smiley face EQ they all have now is bad. Bottom line is that correcting something as best you can is much better than something like LA 1974 coming out. That one has a faulty channel too, which can be fixed by pasting over the good one to make true mono.
@EAPSociety
@EAPSociety 11 месяцев назад
Very well said! For me, it's the editing, too - I can fix a lot, but I just don't have the patience to fix edits on soundboards. It's just frustrating; as much as I dislike edited outtakes, edited live shows just seem like a waste of everybody's time, lol
@EAPSociety
@EAPSociety 10 месяцев назад
@paulgwyn7836 Considering that Lene Reidel, mismatched for Elvis material as she was, was kept on for decades, I think it's safe to say the latter, especially since soundboards are generally from "lesser" sources *and* it's the 70s, which has been presented as less important until semi-recently.

Thank you, Gene! Not yet, sadly - that's going to be quite an undertaking that I don't have time to do yet - as the channel builds, I hope to be able to change that, along with a large number of other things to help the community. 😁
@-dave3577
@-dave3577 11 месяцев назад
I think the prime blame lies with FTD and the poorly calibrated equipment [before we even mention their unsympathetic mastering] they use to transfer tapes to digital. It's happened way too many times for the original tapes to be the issue. There were no tape speed problems when the Having Fun with Elvis on Stage compilation was produced back in 1974.
@EAPSociety
@EAPSociety 10 месяцев назад
Hi, Dave! That's a very high possibility, I'd think, mainly due to the source being deemed less important by the label, though not necessarily. I'll have to go back and listen to the tapes on "Having Fun With Elvis On Stage" and re-check, as it's been a while!

You could spend one episode on doing an how-to. Use one ftd album as an example. And have the episode just being not monetizable. Have it sponsored instead. It’s not like you’re missing out on thousands of ad revenue 🙃
@EAPSociety
@EAPSociety 10 месяцев назад
I love the idea of a how-to, we're looking into that - I dothink it would get a bit repetitive and technical for many folks, and wouldn't be as helpful as providing resources to help more specifically, though. If we can find a happy medium there, I'd be glad to do it! We'd be up for a sponsored episode or a few - ad revenus isn't huge for us right now, and we don't monetize every video, but every bit helps us move forward to help the community faster, which is why it's important. I'd like to get there before I'm 10,000 years old. 😉🤣😁

Hello guys, it's a very interesting topic. I heard that the recent FTD release of Let Me Be There had issues with the correct speed. Sad to say but I am avoiding these releases
@EAPSociety
@EAPSociety 11 месяцев назад
Hi, Greg! For me, the speed issues are fixable; it's the fact that many soundboards are edited that keeps me from getting too many from FTD. Speed, I can fix; restoring edited content on soundboards is just something I have no patience for (yet, lol).
