naughty boy, Auspex. youre going to be missing your next monthly GW shipment of £1000 worth of Citidel Supplies and Miniatures (1 firstborn tactical marine and a water pot)
You can't fool me GW wouldn't send anyone a Firstborn marine, they've already brought them all to the shed people go into, but not so much come back out of!
Considering how much GW has leaned on the ability to Proxy and how much "Make your own" has been baked into the community and warhammer DNA since day one, I think that GW trying to fight 3d printing is a doomed endeavor. The fact that Buying a 3d printer and the resin and doing it yourself is so much cheaper feels more of a condemnation of GW's own hiked prices, and it feels like digging in their heels instead of pivoting in some way is a losing fight.
I am surprised GW havent tired to claim the idea of "warped solider in power armor" as their own. But i guess they need to afford their multiple yatchs or something.
You say that. But it requires a shed or garage. Anyone who lives in a flat or has kids who can’t be around nasty chemicals and fumes can’t do it. Also the majority of GW profits come from the buy in from new players. 3D printing is something people graduate to.
Also some of their factions are proxy from other mediad themselves Tha T'au are litteraly Halo's covenant. Complete with their symbol being the Marathon logo. For those who don't know Marathon is a game Bungie made before Halo. It has a very similar structure but a way more insane and complex storyline.
@@Sir_Bucket I certainly agree that a lot of 40K is heavily inspired by other works. But when it comes to the T'au, they first appeared in White Dwarf 262 in October 2001, just before the first Halo came out. (When it comes to videogames, the Protoss might have influenced their aesthetics...)
Shout out to MaxMinis! I wanted my Death Guard Plague Marines to all have the gasmask style helmets, not the mix with the knight helmet style. After searching for weeks for an official way to do this, with not even Forge World providing a solution and GW no longer offering a catalogue of individual parts, I found MaxMinis Bio Hazard helmets and backpacks! Exactly what I wanted! Would highly recommend!
Given that they've been designed by the GW sculptor that influenced deathguard "gasmask style" thats not surprising that they fit well, they are great sculpts.
@@MisterFeanor Get out! That explains a LOT! I have even emailed him with photos of finished and painted Death Guard minis using his bitz as a thank you and he always took the time to respond. During the lockdown his store was down and it saddened me that I couldn’t order more helmets, went as far as paying double for backpacks on eBay. When he hit me up saying that he was back on it was a ray of sunshine during a naff period
GW hates 3D printing so this demonstrates he's not dependent or hoping to become dependent on them through all kinds of perks that corporations offer influencers.
I personally like what StationForge makes. Especially printed by Wargame Exclusive (and what they make themselves). Deserves a shoutout (I assume neither party minds to be named in a YT comment). Also remember everyone: nobody has to invest in a 3D printer. Not only do some of these creators sell the miniatures printed directly, they might have partners that print and sell their designs. Otherwise if just buy the STLs, there's a high chance that in your country there's several parties specialized in taking printing orders, some are even specialized in 3D printing for tabletop games. You absolutely don't need a 3D printer yourself to make use of the 3D printing advantage. Lastly: I know GW gets quite a lot of schtick these days, but, remember that they do keep the games alive that we like. If you like stuff they pump out, don't shy from supporting them.
3D printing has actually gotten me to visit my local gaming shop more, I've spent hundreds on paints, primers, basing material, tools & brushes, and *especially* carrying cases and foam. If I plan to spend 200 bucks on my hobby, I am spending 200 bucks on the hobby. The only difference is now I'm investing in the actual hobby instead of miniatures. I also know how to do 3D modeling so there's the added bonus of being able to do unique and one-of-a-kind prints that only I have (unless I share STLs).
It's perhaps strange to say given the nature of your channel, but what you talked about in the beginning is a real pillar of journalistic integrity. Kudos
Dont worry about frail resin parts auspex, if you mix in flex-resin into your standard resin you can radically increase the durability of your 3d prints - they'll be tougher than actual GW models.
Yes, I’d love to know as someone just starting to experiment with resin. Starting off with an ABS-like for now, but if you have a good mix of two particular resins…
@@Backstabmacro I use anycubic water washable 8k and Siraya Tech Tenacious. Kinda half ass the measurements, 10-25% Tenacious. More if a model looks like it will be fragile. I do it this way because it stays water washable, I really fucking hate dealing with IPA.
I'm a massive fan of digital kitbashing and sculptinf my own truly unique stuff in Meshmixer, and I would quite simply not be in the hobby if it wasn't for resin printers. Perfect example is my Monster Hunter Marines project. You can guess what it is just from names alone, but it's a massive project where I basically look at random monsters in my STL collection, cut horns, scales or pelts off of anything thst might work, and stick them onto my favourite variant of sci-fi armour, as well as taking bio-weapons from stuff like tyranid proxies, slapping handles and crossguards into them to just turn them into weapons.
@@LordCrate-du8zm Yeah, but they didn't happen in a tweet. I don't care if there are or aren't female Custodes. But the way GW implements retcons is usually more thought out and has more finesse than the way they operated here. Sure GW has some foot in mouth lore moments (Grey Knights killing Sisters for their pure blood.) but even the retcons of those things happen in books or codices, not Twitter. The whole thing seems to be targeted more at the Twitter crowd than the people actually buying their products.
Just printed up 170+ Tallarn Desert Raiders. 6 full units with all weapon options plus 3 command squads with standard medipak and vox caster. 1 full bottle of resin. Sized them just between the old pewter and the new cadians so they fit in really well. Currently working on replacing all my old filament vehicle upgrade bits with resin from my Saturn 3.
I use those Feudal Guard tanks myself, and they're great! You can't tell until you start making them, but they're incredibly modular. The main weapons are actually a separate section that can be swapped out at will on a single chassis. All the weapons, sponsons, hatches, etc., come with the options for magnets built in, and they're really well supported! Really, just drop and render. Can't recommend enough!
Very cool. The sisters look great. The feudal and XVIIIth century guards are great. I get why people who want 1 to 1 copies. But some self made ones are just awesome. The industry grows very fast.
GW can't even contain this chaos. We'll win by sheer numbers alone. If the Kill teams were real, everyone who spoke out against femstodes would already be dead.
@@jacket2848they are also a fraction of the production cost, thus are like $5-$10 at the most. Also, the minis are no worse than many designs GW has put out in the past
@@jacket2848 what I’m saying isn’t true or false. It’s an objective opinion. So is yours. Battle tech IN MY OPINION has models with similar quality to GW.
I'm a huge fan of the feudal guard stuff, starting an entire army of them. All the stuff is super modular with build in options for magnets and all the sculpts look amazing!
Big ups for protecting these small creators, i found the channel through the monthly giveaway, but ive found your transparency, attentiveness, and pragmatic approach to the hobby really refreshing! How you find the hours in the day is also impressive ngl. Personally its helped me avoid some expensive investments in models i wasnt aware were mid burial, so thanks for that too. Much love ❤
Personally I'm more interested in the growth of alternative hard plastic kits from Wargames atlantic, stargrave etc, many of which look great when combined with 40k parts. Some just prefer plastic for kitbashing, ease of use and price.
I support any alternative to GW, but I'm a little confused for your reasoning. Spend an afternoon in blender tutorials and you have limitless kitbashing potential with 3d printing that plastic can't offer, print only whole models and modeling becomes easier (or don't if you still want to construct them) and 3d printing has long been cheaper than GW prices at least. If you just like plastic then more power to you, though I think it comes with more downsides in favor of personal taste than 3d printing instead of the inverse. 3d printing already has the price advantage over mass manufactured plastic. The last hurdle it has to overcome is convenience.
My friend and I got Resin printers, decided to start 10th 40k. With out counting the intial cost of whatever printer you buy, I guaruntee in 3 months (or sooner depending on how often you print) you'll have 3000 points of whatever army you want for only 300 USD in files and resin. Way cheaper than GW plastic and my opinion more worth it.
I was very impressed by a lot of these miniatures, they would be really cool to add with collections of various armies from other properties, I don’t think I would even mind that they are distinct products, they blend so well!
You must have had an absolute blast writing the script for this one - the references to "certain expensive model manufacturers" and similar was top-notch with the understated snark! 😄
My entire army is 3D printed for the exception of a Phobos Librarian & two Infernus models, the GW guy even lets me play in his shop and because of this I always buy the other things like upgrades & transfer sheets plus codex. Soon I'll have enough cash from saving on my first army to have a second army that I do plan on getting from GW, eventually...
Nice to see Auspex embrace some alternative custom models, I'm painting up some custom Sisters of Silence models I got off CuIts3D while I give this a watch infact.
My play group tasked me with designing a Men of Iron army rules and datasheets using the Covenant of Mars units from etsy, and because of how beautiful the prints are, it was pretty simple to create datasheets for them. GW better watch out in the future
I got the Scillia Legion (alpha proxies) from DakkaDakka and the quality was amazing but the scaling was all over the place despite their frequent promises during the campaign
I got a Saturn 3 for Pipermakes' FishMechs and it has been absolutely amazing. My only gripe is that the leveling paper is too thick and I had to use normal printer paper.
I clicked on this video with the intent of skimming through it to check some cool sculpts but the commentary was so good I watched the whole thing! Some of the comments were gold. And it seemed like Auspex was having a fun time too which is always nice to see :)
Thank you so much for this video. Now, let's see more people pick up One Page Rules at the clubs. The days of getting creative with the hobby are back, boys!!
feudal guard are awesome like they mix the futuristic and medieval themes of 40k im planning use the walker as war dogs (+30% size), they look so great!
I know you are a 40k channel, but I switched to OPR a year ago and I would appreciate content about that, too. Maybe I'm not the only one. Maybe I am. Who knows...
Godforge is printing PiperMakes Tau and SM Proxy, and don't forget Wargames Exclusive and MajorMinis. MajorMini is doing cool Xenomorph Tyranid proxys. These are my favorite proxy alts.
I love these vids mostly because of the tongue and cheek humor. The dark mechanist comment that "these could be great alternatives for certain VERY expensive armies" just floored me, lmao
The little modular scrap tanks from Morkaks Foundry look really good. Not really into non GW plastics generally, and 3d prints vary in quality. But there are exceptions. The one company I do buy a lot of Guard bits from is Anvil Industries. Their guard sized bionic arm kits look tremendous on both the old Militarum sculpts and the newer Cadian kits.
I bought the Eternal Crusaders by greytide studio a while ago, and it was made with good resin, They fit perfectly and made my models fit in more with my black templar army. Saves a lot of time of doing it myself with green stuff instead. Edit: i'm talking about the parts that go with my gw redemptor model only.
For a Death Guard Alt, look for a set called "The Tide Haunters." They are a sunken, undersea based set, with mutated/demonic sea life for drones and tanks.
A friend just paid me to print him out some Armigers from the Feudal Guard range and they were really well set up for printing, magnetizing, and separate core parts and armor panels so you can even paint them separate as is customary for Imperial Knights
There is such a wealth of options for Dark Eldar and Eldar proxies that blow GW's out of the water, that i could never imagine giving GW any money for those armies.
Across the realms has a few good models but a lot of them are.. rough. Some alternatives I can recommend that I didn't see you mention: Solwyte - tons of vehicles for marines, admech and knights Pipermakes - amazing tau and eldar Diverging realms - neat custodes/sos Puppetswar has some neat stuff nowadays Some really high quality stuff out there nowadays. Honestly surprised gw hasn't started selling stls by this point
thought about changing resin ? when i was using the elegoo water washable i had lots of issues with fragile parts breaking. but since i use the ancyubic hd grey most fragile parts have a lot of play in bending terms. - which on the other hand can be a issue while printing since the sucktion force might bend them while printing.
now this is 100% based. You got my resub auspex. Only problem I've found is that too many designs, while they look great, they don't look like they fit 40k. If one was using say Grimdark Future, then it's great for alternative armies.
Very cool, I must get a 3D printer at some stage. I have been putting it off, with the rule that I have to finish painting all of the other models I have first, and I have a big back log of CMON games and some 40K.
OPR's robot legions are so good, I own like 4 000 points of them and now theyre releasing space elves with very similar design elements - I'm very much into it
3D printing is just getting easier every generation. In 4 years time Elegoo has come leaps and bounds with their latest Saturn 4 introducing many quality of life features. I'm stoked at how much easier it is becoming to just make your own minis.
There are some awesome minitures out there for printing. My biggest issue with them is there's rarely any complete ranges. You can find awesome units of guardsmen proxies, but then there are no special weapon options or no command squad.
Those knights of the Crescent would make amazing crusader models, since GW... only has the crap resin models... that you can only get online... but are perpetually out of stock... and only have two sculpts anyways.
As a looooong time gw player, i hadnt switched to 3d prints until last year. Not only is it cheaper. What won me over is their are some much better looking models out there.
