The amount of things you can do with Obsidian Excalidraw is amazing! Just when I feel like I know what this plugin does, you go and release something new that I have to learn.
Thanks Nicole! Sometimes I think that doing less would make the Excalidraw plugin less intimidating - but the next moment I have a great idea and just have to implement it.
at minute 2:02 - when adding the black box - one not familiar with excalidraw should watch out to switch the color black from the color picker really to black or #000000 so it will be really gone, instead of being only opaque! Thanks zolt for the explanation in discord
Good afternoon, I encountered such a problem, an error. I don't know where to write this, so I'll leave it here. The CNTRL+Z command does not work on the Ukrainian keyboard layout. Only the file name changes, not the actions in the canvas. please solve the bug. thanks for understanding
It's a known issue - for technical reasons I don't want to bore you with I can't/won't solve it, sorry. Use the key based on the English location of the key. This issue would need to be addressed in the core excalidraw package. You can raise an issue here: github.com/excalidraw/excalidraw
Hi Zsolt - I love the auto-export feature as it means I can embed my excalidraw drawings as png into my self-hosted obsidian website. Do you have a recommendation how can I embed an area of a drawing into my notes as png? I currently copy the markdown link, this renders in obsidian however I need png images for the web site
Why do you need png for the website? You can encapsulate an SVG into a div element and it will behave much like an image. Equally you can set the src attribute of an img element with an SVG and that will also work. If you must stick with PNG you can carve out the respective part of the image with the deconstruct script and publish the carved out part on your site.
That is amazing. In the final demonstration when the web image is displayed, after the cropping is it still just a displayed url or does it bring the image into the vault?
it remains a URL. A crop_ file is created, but that does not contain the image, only the cropping and masking instructions in the form of an Excalidraw image.
Masking not working correctly for me. Using a jpeg or png and invoking crop and mask command for the black hiding mask works up to 80% or so. Some of the original image never completely disappears. Making the mask shape white to hide everything but the shape isn't working at all either in excalidraw or canvas. Any Ideas? I'm not using dark mode.
likely the issue is the sequence of layers. Make sure you are using "black" (#000000), not the "almost" black in the default excalidraw palette. When adding a white area, make sure that is at the top of the layers, not below the black and make sure white is "#ffffff" or "white", not just a light color.
Thanks for quick response. I did correct black to be #000000 and this made it totally transparent. However white #ffffff shape still not masking. White shape is on front layer and above image. @@VisualPKM
@@EricRhysTaylor are you sure it is in the front layer. Th corpper is a bit deceptive... because elements are set to be semi transparent so you can see the image and the layers. select the white element and press bring to front to be sure.
Layering is not the problem. The mask begins as correct and i'm not changing it. But i have confirmed the masking shape is in front (Bring to Front). black works but white does not. The order is as follows. select image in excalidraw. 2. apply mask from command line. select ellipse shape (which is black by default). When i click on image in excalidraw note the image updates and i see through the image where the ellipse is. 3. change black ellipse to white. click on image in excalidraw note and the mask disappears. There is no effect. Selecting Bring to Front has no effect. Black is working. White is not. I wonder if there is a conflict with the other Excalidraw scripts? or some other settings? I assume you have confirmed the mask for white is still working on the latest version of Excalidraw? Thanks! @@VisualPKM
@@EricRhysTaylor The logic for mask is the following. Black makes the area transparent, white makes it opaque. Colors in between black and white are semi-transparent depending on their distance from white/black. So having a completely white mask over the image as I think I understand your setup will result in no effect at all. If however you have a larger black ellipse and a smaller white ellipse in the center of the black , then you will see a donout shaped transparent area. To help with visibility of the image and the masked area, by default the opacity of shapes is set to 50% thus it is hard to see which shape is at the top in the layers. You can change the opacity to 100% to verify that in the donout case you have the image at the bottom, followed by black, followed by white (smaller). The opacity of the shapes has no effect on masking. I've tested the donout setup just now. Works as expected.
i can't not find the command "excalidraw: crop image" in my obsidian excalidraw, obsidian version is v1.5.3 and the excalidraw version is 2.0.20,help plz
The action is context sensitive. It will only show in the command palette when you have an eligible object selected: - an image or PDF is active on canvas - the cursor is on a line with a link to an image, excalidraw drawing or PDF in markdown editor - a single image or single PDF embeddable is selected in your Excalidraw scene
I like that it doesn't add another image or keep a creep of many images, but it's a md file with data and info. It's clever, light weight and well made. Thanks!
The upside is clear, there is no clutter of cropped images in your Vault. The downside is image processing every time you display the cropped image... though I do strive to limit that overhead by caching images.
Love this function! Excalidraw keep exceeding my expectations.. I wonder if we could add custom masks (a black and white image as a mask) Hmm I might move my digital journaling to excalidraw, once I found a way to mainstream moving stickers into excalidraw It would be a dream come true if auto removing background becomes a thing in excalidraw ❤
what sort of stickers are we talking about? Removing background is a challenge. I have some rudimentary ideas, but they are resource (CPU) intensive and not really doing a good enough job. But that is a feature I'd love integrated into Excalidraw as well. Currently I am using Lunapic, clipdrop, photoroom and the built in Mac feature for this, I find that on some pictures one works better then the other... this is why I also don't think this is such an easy thing to implement.

I've been generating stickers with dalle 3 according to what I need but apparently it can't make them with transparent background so my process until now was: Download the stickers onto my Samsung phone (s23+) then use the Samsung editor to copy the stickers without the background (idk what the name of the function is but you can long press the image and all stickers would be recognized. It isn't perfect but good enough) then I paste the stickers onto Samsung notes where I do the digital reading journal. But since I use Obsidian for my daily journal and log, it would be ideal to move to excalidraw for the reading journal. I tried copying the stickers I made from Samsung note to excalidraw but it simply doesn't appear (tried using copy-paste and drag & drop but both don't work). I'll try to see if I can get it to work when making new stickers next time maybe next weekend
I don't know if I am doing something wrong here, but the moment I select "crop or mask" my image becomes inverted, and stays that way even after I exit the crop/mask - even if I do nothing

It seems that this crop function can only be used in light mode, and the color of the image cropped in dark mode will be reversed, I use the system is windows
this is definitely a bug. I never use Excalidraw in drak mode, instead I use it with a dark color palette - thus I never tested this scenario. There should be no issue fixing this. Will take a look.
btw, if you close and open the image where you inserted the cropped image, the next time you insert the inversion issue is fixed automatically. Thanks! I tried this already but found that when I bring an image to Excalidraw, make it active, press CMD + P and choose 'Excalidraw: Crop image and mask images' I get and empty image in the new tab and the original is somehow disappeared from the original Excalidraw drawing. I'm using version 2.0.15. What might be the reason?
Best to raise an issue on GitHub - RU-vid is not great for troubleshooting. github.com/zsviczian/obsidian-excalidraw-plugin/issues - How did you add the image to Excalidraw? - Was it an image with a URL, or a local file outside the Vault or an image from the Vault? - What type of image: png? jpg? svg? webp? Based on what you write you seem to be using the tool as intended. Maybe a screen recording posted on GitHub can help spot what is different in your case.
Please help by raising issues with supporting information on GitHub. It's great you are sharing experiences, but RU-vid comments is useless when it comes to debugging. This is where I am tracking the issue: github.com/zsviczian/obsidian-excalidraw-plugin/issues/1538 It is helpful to know that the issue involves jpepg.
I released 2.0.16 which hopefully addresses this problem. The issue was one of slow loading of large images on lower powered devices. The plugin was not handling this situation gracefully. Please raise a new issue on github if the problem persists after testing with 2.0.16
