The Rome Walkout - January 2, 1958, Teatro dell'Opera di Roma
The highly anticipated performance of Bellini's Norma is called off after Act I Scene 1 due to Maria Callas's indisposition.
Cast: Maria Callas, Franco Corelli, Miriam Pirazzini, Giulio Neri, Piero de Palma, conductor: Gabriele Santini
This was to be a legendary evening, broadcast on radio, as well as great social event, but after Norma's first scene Callas was unable to go on, and because despite her express wish the management didn't secure a substitute for the role, the performance was called off at the first intermission, sending home the president Gronchi and the distinguished audience made up in large part of politicians and celebrities.
Here you can see Franco Corelli at first giddy with excitement over their big night, then - ever the dear colleague and a true gentleman - being cool and good-humored about this whole unfortunate event, a missed opportunity that was promising to be one of his greatest triumphs in his career.

The audio clip you're hearing is from the very same night, Franco Corelli singing in Pollione and Adalgisa's Act 1 duet.
