I am your age Mark, I remember those days before RU-vid, and everything else! If you wanted to learn the new riffs of the day, you were on your own!!! Rock on Mike! You know the score on this one. I think in the end we're lucky, because in figuring out the licks and riffs by ear develops your unique skills as a player. And learning from a friend, well that has advantages too. Always good to have another musical friend! Thanks for watching!

Wow! This really blew my mind. Mark, I stumbled across your video and am so glad I found it. I have gotten interested in playing again after an eight year hiatus. Unfortunately, I wasn’t dedicated and patient enough to learn my pentatonic scales back when I was a teenager. I think your trick finally made it “click” for me. Thanks for getting me interested in playing again! Keep up the content. Thank you, Mark!🤝

Hi Mark great lesson, hey I’ve clicked the various links and can’t seem to locate the tabs for this lesson, is it in one of the paid sections? Thanks!
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel 2 года назад
Hey brother, thanks! No tabs on this. (Well, I guess theres a backing track for paid Members - and another video.) The backing track is useful, but honestly, you want to avoid tab on this. Best to figure out the lick in various positions by ear because you'll really remember it better and know it *your* way, which is super-important. I know it's a pain once or twice, but well worth the extra effort. Pays dividends!

Hey Mark, as an older player I've been having a bit of trouble playing my solos using alternate picking. I too stumbled on this lesson..and remembered doing and these same kind of licks. Any help with using alternative picking in these lessons. Thanks...not a very fast soloist??
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel 2 года назад
Hey man, sorry I missed this. Yes, there's a somewhat boring but effective technique to build up speed. The basic premise is that most musicians play faster than they should when they are practicing. And this paradoxically leads to lack of speed. So the idea is to learn to practice slowly and then reinforce that. Here's one way. (Use alternate picking throughout if that's the skill you're building. At a certain point it will be necessary.) Step 0. Take a musical line. Could be a scale fragment or simple lick. Doesn't matter. Separate it into a whole note for each note. So each note gets its own measure. Step 1. Set the metronome at 60 BPM. Play the phrase until perfect. Step 2. Increase to 70 BPM. Play until perfect. Step N. Keep increasing by increments of 10 BPM until you've arrived at 120 BPM. Then do the same steps with the same phrase, but use 1/2 notes. This means everything is twice as fast as in the steps of the previous part. Then increase to 1/4 notes. Then increase to 1/8 notes, then 1/16 notes. When you get to 120 BPM using 1/16 notes you're at 32X the speed of the original!! That's day 1. On day 2, do the same thing. Maybe abbreviate the first whole note exercise, but keep the others. On day 3, do 120 BPM whole note, 120 BPM 1/2 note, but then the whole thing for 1/4, 1/8, 1/16. Day 4 do 120 BPM for whole, 1/2, 1/4 then entire exercise for 1/8 and 1/16. Day 5 do 120 BPM for whole, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and entire exercise for 1/16. That's enough. Repeat this exercise at least once every month. It reminds you how important it is to play slowly. It's a total cliche, but it's also true - you've got to be able to play slowly to play fast. Many of my students practice phrases (for the first time!) faster than I do. I constantly have to ask them to slow down. The metronome is a tool for keeping you at a slow pace, and it works for that! Hope this helps!
@straight8ight
@straight8ight 2 года назад

What are the notes in the lick you played in A. Better yet is there a tab of the lock you used in this. Thanks, Beginner
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel 2 года назад
Hi Richard. The notes of the original lick are A, C, D, and D#. Members get tabs and backing tracks. (link in description). BUT do your playing-self favor and try to learn the lick without tab. Use your ears and don't worry about getting it exact. Just get it to where you think it sounds okay. What you learn in doing that is immense. The one in this video is only 4 notes, so it's a decent one to try. You can do it!

Why not slow down a bit so we can follow you
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel 2 года назад
Hi Roger. Thanks for the feedback. What part(s) do you want/need to have slowed down? The idea/process here is what is important, not the specific lick: - Take a lick you already know - Find the starting note - Map the starting note everywhere on the fretboard - Figure out (by yourself) how to play the lick at all the starting notes. The lick I used as an example isn't important. Figuring out how to play it yourself for each A is what will help. Hopefully that is what is coming across.
