He went to Toyota and won Le Mans right away and he would have won the Indy 500 had that POS Honda engine not break down. Horner's wording indicated that they did not have a contract written up and handed to him to sign, but that does not mean that they didn't chase him and offer for him to come and race for them, both steps taken before an official contract is written and offered.

Most F1 teams at some point have their people schmoozing the top drivers and sniffing around opportunities of a switch. RB did it to Hamilton while they had Vettel and Webber. Ferrari did it to Schumacher, Villenueve, and Alonso after they all won championships. Williams did it to Senna and Mclaren did it to Montoya so, what's new here? The question is; out of all the teams in F1 who wouldn't want Alonso? Especially seeing what he's done with that sick Mclaren whilst Vandorne has struggled.. I think RB and Renault are lying.

Alonso is talking crap. Why would RB ask him at Monaco they were still working out a deal with Ricciardo and Max has a contract till 2020. Alonso also said that if Mcclaren would become good he would come back. Why not just go to RB and win races immediatly. there is also no way RB would contract Alonso recently with RB Honda becoming a thing. Alonso has a lot to gain from saying he denied RB, it makes him look like he walked out instead of being pushed out the door.
@nilsdaniels1875

Renault also said they didn’t give him an offer.
@MashiatCOD99
@MashiatCOD99 6 лет назад
Nils Daniels 1. Just because they were still negotiating with Ricciardo doesn’t mean that they can’t have been talking to Alonso about a race seat. 2. Red Bull can’t win races on pure pace, and they sure as hell won’t challenge for a title until 2021 at the earliest, so what’s the point for Alonso to move there? Max and Daniel are already frustrated with Red Bull, and they haven’t already won WDCs.
@nilsdaniels1875
@nilsdaniels1875 6 лет назад
MashiatCOD99 they weren’t just negotiating with Daniel they fully expected to sign him till 2020. Wasn’t the point to Mcclaren switching to Renault for them to be like RB and win podiums and races cause that was what Alonso wanted.

2008 would have been his best guess but I am pretty sure he was waiting for Ferrari. Then it would have made little sense leaving Ferrari in 2011 or 2013 after two years where he almost won the title. And in 2018 he saw Red Bull as the third car… they didn’t become fully competitive until 2021 so he would have had to wait and battle Max. He probably knew the Honda engine needed at least a couple more years to fully develop.

I lived in Spain most of my life and I've been able to watch F1 races on the Spanish TV since the 1980s. I could certainly watch the F1 races when Fernando Alonso was driving for Minardi in 2001, and later in Renault. That myth that F1 couldn't be seen on Spanish TV is utter BS. Perhaps Alonso's family couldn't watch Fi races from Asturias, but at least it was freely available in regional TV channels such as TV3/C33 (Catalan "public" channels) and for a number of years it was also available in some of the channels of TVE (Spain's government broadcasting corporation). It hasn't been until the most recent years (when he was already in McLaren) when it has become unavailable in any open-access channels.

Vamos Alonso! You’re a handful but a winner and one of the best on the grid today still (bar LH imo). Red Bull is a sorry outfit that are covering up their messed dealings behind the scenes. The way they’re treating DR atm and how they’ve elevated a talent (for sure) but no proven Champion in Max to unrealistic levels is mindboggling. Everyone knows you would’ve owned Verstappen should you have driven in a RB. That team is no longer championship pedigree and you’re doing well looking elsewhere for your fullfilment. Good Luck 🙏🏽

There is no way that Red Bull offered Alonso a seat for next year. Monaco was before Ricciardo had even signed with Renault, and Horner said on THE DAY Daniel made his move that he wasn't interested in Alonso.
@GabrielKlute
@GabrielKlute 6 лет назад
Red Bull didn't even know that Ricciardo was seriously negotiating with Renault. I think that this claim was more a dig at Verstappen than anybody else, because Alonso is clearly suggesting that due to Verstappen's streak of crashes culminating in his disappointing finish in monaco, that Red Bull wanted to replace him with Alonso. This doesn't make sense at all because Ricciardo's exit is tied to the team rallying around Verstappen as their future champion. Alonso is full of hot air and nothing he says should be taken seriously. He often talks about how great he is and how he's being let down by his car, immediately after talking about how great the McLaren car is.

Interestingly the Beyond The Grid podcast with Horner was done on the same day Danny Ric told Red Bull he was off to Renault. Horner was adamant that Alonso wasn't a consideration to replace Ric as 'he causes too much chaos'. Red Bull wanted him in the past when he chose Ferrari instead but I honestly can't see why they'd want him now. That and the Honda engine says they never offered a drive to Alonso. I can't see why Renault would either. I think Alonso is saving face by saying other teams wanted him but he's walking away on his terms.

I see him going only to Ferrari if he comes back. This is a business and people do get rehired under the right circumstances. With Kimi up in the air and most likely retiring soon, LeClare may get a seat, but Alonso is a guaranteed win with the right car. He's just a competitor and wants to compete. I think Indycar is a step backwards, but if he enjoys the potential winning, then so be it. Good for him. Imagine if Vettel and Alonso were teammates with this years car.
@tucoramirez4558
@tucoramirez4558 6 лет назад
"Imagine if Vettel and Alonso were teammates with this years car." Imagine if you had a brain. Listen. Everybody knows this: Vettel is Ferrari's undisputed number 1 driver like Schumacher was. That means Ferrari's focus is on Vettel. The other Ferrari driver is a number 2 back-up which supports the team and the number 1 driver. Above all Ferrari want a team-player who understands he is not bigger than the team and has to comply with their wishes and plans. Alonso obviously doesn't fit this role. He'll want to challenge Vettel. Vettel doesn't want that. Ferrari doesn't want that. The reason they have Raikkonen is because Vettel likes him and they get along well. Kimi also understands what he must do to help the team and Vettel. He may not like it but does it and as such is loyal and rewarded by the team. Alonso would never do such a thing. Ferrari still remember the pairing of Prost/Mansell in 1990 in which Mansell refused to accept Prost was the number 1 driver who was going to challenge for the title. Mansell believed he had the same right to win every race and refused to get in line. After that season Ferrari never again signed two great drivers at the top of their game to be team mates. Ferrari saw what happened to Mercedes with Hamilton/Rosberg and they don't want that happening to them. Since Raikkonen is remarkably consistent with as many podiums as Vettel this year and currently third in the championship chances are big he'll stay. He works well with Vettel. This is important for the team. After Raikkonen's tenure at Ferrari is over they will sign somebody who can at first be a back-up for Vettel and then be groomed to be his successor once he retires. Leclerc fits this role better than anybody because he's 10 years younger than Vettel and can wait for his turn. "Imagine Vettel and Alonso team mates" That notion is so ridiculous I am astounded by it. Alonso left Ferrari when he heard they were going to sign Vettel for 2014. He knew he couldn't be team mates with a four time champion. Also since Ferrari are currently more than happy with Vettel they don't need Alonso. They need a back-up and support for Vettel. Alonso would *never* agree with that. Ferrari would *never* sign a driver Vettel would *never* get along with. Sorry. Even if Alonso returns to F1 in 2020 (by which time he'll be 39) I don't see ANY top team wanting him. If he's lucky McLaren will have a good car and a spot open. Even that is a slim chance. Last of all: You say he's guaranteed a win in a top car. Well, let me tell you this other thing: The best drivers are also good at developing the car to be the best. The best drivers make the team improve and everybody who works for it work harder and focus better. A good driver has to be a team-builder. Alonso is a team-destroyer. So the reason he never has had a top car for the last 12 seasons in F1 is because his input was bad and the cars got ever worse. 12 seasons without a title. That says something.

Can anyone explain what happened between him and Horner to make him want an apology? I'm not caught up on that story
@TheTororist
@TheTororist 6 лет назад
horner said on a podcast that they would never sign alonso because he tends to bring chaos wherever he goes. alonso responded by saying they have tried to sign him multiple times and that horner apologized for his comments via email. horner then came back and said alonso is chatting bullshit. and the drama continues

I certainly believe Alonso over Horner. Why would Alonso lie about it - what is to be gained? But Horner gains much from pretending he never made the offer. BUT, some have suggested that Flavio Briatore (Alonso's agent) never actually got the offers from Red Bull and just told Alonso they did for some unknown reason. I am not saying that happened...but it has been discussed. No idea if it is true. Red Bull would have been stupid not to offer Alonso a deal. Sure, he had some earlier troubles and speaks his mind more than many teams like...but his driving skills are unquestioned.

RBR is putting their faith in Verstappen, so why try to attract a driver who will want to be in the first seat? And Alonso does have something to gain from this, now he can say he's not leaving because none wants him, but because he has decided he should.

We all know why Alonso didn't join Red Bull don't we? Max Verstappen. Plain and simple. He preferred to join a crap team like Renault with #1 status because he knows Verstappen will expose him just like Hamilton exposed him in 2007.

Because of how he left? Alonso likes to burn bridges. Leclerc would get a seat over him any day.

Justice Warriro WHY can't you understand that Vettel is Ferrari's number 1 driver now?? They are looking for a replacement who can be a good number 2. And to groom a successor when Vettel retires. It is THAT hard to understand? Whoever VETTEL wants to be his team mate will play a huge factor.

The bridges have already burnt well and truly and Vettel would just kick his ass as Hamilton did in 07.

If McLaren is one of the top 2 teams in 2021 or 2022, I firmly believe Alonso will come back for one LAST season before officially retiring for real. I think he wants to end of well, in a family he loves. I know he likes McLaren (beyond the high pay), but it is just disappointing that they are severely underperforming. Let's just hope McLaren can comeback strong... and that we can see Alonso race in F1 one last time.

If McLaren is one of the top 2 teams in 2021/2022, I don't think they even want him back. Lots of new talent right now that will have grown into great drivers by then, or just better drivers in general that will have their preference. That is, if McLaren will even be a top 2 team by then

@MT-pv2rf
@MT-pv2rf 6 лет назад
97MrBlues Horner's telling the truth. Its obvious what's happened here, Flavio Briatore has been up to his usual tricks as the master of shady dealings and backroom politics and has clearly been trying to cosy up to Red Bull while telling lies and half truths to Alonso at every turn to keep the Spaniards ego happy. Alonso is a fool for still having Flavio Briatore as his manager as nobody in the paddock respects that guy anymore. I've heard numerous f1 insiders say that Flavio is avoided like the plague behind the scenes. Flavio lied to Alonso and Alonso rejected the fake offers that never existed because he's petrified of facing a quality driver like Max in a competitive car with equality as he can't deal with the reality that the other drivers can win races in the same car. We saw this in 2007. Alonso is the classic case of a sportsman who runs away from competition for fear of getting exposed. He's like a boxer who only fights bums.

@MT-pv2rf
@MT-pv2rf 6 лет назад
Cloody Tube Nick Rosberg. Beat Schumacher 3 years straight in equal machinery. Alonso generally had the best car and the best reliability back at Renault. Raikkonen in the McLaren would have beaten Alonso without his piss poor reliability. Also, Mika Hakkinen beat Schumacher in a championship battle. Nothing particularly special about Alonso doing it.

Damn it Nando you're breaking my heart man! It's one thing to retire due to ongoing lack of performance at McLaren in favor of triple- quadruple blah blah crown. It's another thing entirely knowing (assuming it's true- may not be) you may have ACTUALLY had the best chassis next year to fight for podiums again. That said I suspect Alonso/Verstappen would look an awful lot like LH Alonso which would've been bad for both of them. I really hope he comes back. But I'm starting to really doubt that's a realistic possibility. If this is true, and RB comes out swinging next year, you will have officially made yet another devastating decision that negatively affects your legacy- a legacy that could have and should have been far more storied.

The deciding factor was when McLaren couldn't compete, even with a Renault engine. He also knows that you need to be in a top Works team to even compete for a title. Ferrari is out of the question, and Mercedes' seats are all taken. Renault is still too young.

i saw an interview where horner was told that alonso said red bull wanted him to go there on several occasions, mentioning the years that was mentioned in this video. horner's reply was 'we offered him a contract in 07, and haven't offered him any contract since then'. it's a clever thing what horner said, red bull haven't offered him a contract since, but if they have been talking and trying to get him to go to red bull, that's not 'offering a contract'. this is policitcal bullshit talk that horner is known for. people gloss over it and don't realise the wording that horner used.

Publishing this interview after statements of Red Bull denying it and still using this title and no information about the context isn't just plain bad journalism, but serious clickbaiting. Disgraceful.

Red Bull that will be powered by Honda in 2019 is going to approach a person that was one of reasons Honda lost McLaren as engine supplier, I think I am going to believe Mr Horner here.
